Mercy Chinwo: Road To Fame, Music, Marriage

Nigerian gospel artist, songwriter, actress, and comedian Mercy Nnenda Chinwo was born on the 5th of September 1990, in Port Harcout, River State. Mercy wears many hats, and her talent knows no bound however her greatest calling is in music. She is a favourite to many Christians not only in Nigeria but all over the globe.

Mercy’s father recognized her gift at a young age and supported his daughter, however he passed away while she was still young in 2007, and her mother singlehandedly raised her. Mercy began singing at the young age of 7, she was a member of the children’s choir at her mother’s church and later transitioned to the main church choir. She lended her voice as a backing vocalist to great Nigerian Gospel Artists such as Joe Praise, Chris Morgan to mention a few. Her songs are played in many churches and at many gatherings. Mercy’s journey to stardom was not easy, in 2012, she became a contestant on Nigerian Idols and won the title. Mercy received an SUV and 7.5 million naira. One of the songs she sang on the finale was Whitney Houston’s songs “I look to you” which she made her own. Her performance was outstanding and energetic, she had come for the prize! In one of her interviews after winning Idols, Mercy was asked if she ever thought that one day she would become a superstar, she confidently said yes, she always had the dream of being great one day, singing positive messages to the youth of Nigeria.

The songstress released her very first album titled “Testimony” in 2015 and “Igwe” in 2017. Mercy Chinwo was signed to Ezee records after waiting a few years after winning Nigerian Idols and her light kept shining brighter. She however became popular on the gospel scene in 2018 after releasing her single “Excess Love”. “Excess Love” earned her a significant recognition within the gospel music industry not only in Nigeria but globally. She also scooped three awards for the single in 2019 at the Africa Gospel Awards (AGAFEST 2019) namely Africa Gospel New Artiste of the year, Africa Gospel Female Artiste of the Year, and Africa Song of the Year. In 2020, Mercy Chinwo won the award for the Gospel Artiste of the year at the AFRIMMA Awards. So far, she has released two albums, The Cross My Gaze (2018), Satisfied (2020) and numerous hit singles which include Chinedum (2018), Akamdinelu 2019, Oh Jesus (2019). Mercy’s uplifting songs have a unique way of ministering to gospel lovers. Gospel lovers relate to the messages behind her music and identify with the songs. Asked how she puts her songs together, Mercy explained that the Holy Spirit is her source, He inspires her, He gives her every word for each song and this usually happens when she meditates on the Word of God and through her life experiences. Mercy declares that her life is a testimony of God’s grace, God’s love, God’s mercy and if God can do it for her, he can do it for everyone.
