I am always super excited to talk about skin and skincare. It is extremely rewarding for me to see women transform their skin from dull to glowing. One way to move from average to glowing is by avoiding common mistakes and making a few tweaks to your skincare routine. Let us look deeper into these common mistakes. This article is based on 1 Corinthians 6:19 – “Do you
know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You
are not your own”. According to the above scripture, our bodies are sacred, a place where the Holy Spirit should be worshipped and honored. Therefore, we must not defile our bodies, we should make smart choices that keep our bodies healthy. This scripture motivated me to take better care of my body. Whilst taking care of my body, my skin improved immensely. Wellness and healthy skin cannot be separated, when you treat your body as a temple, the benefits are immeasurable. I now view taking care of my body as a gift to myself and by extension a gift to my family. When you are healthy and whole, you can be a better mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend. These are added benefits of treating your body as the temple of God.
Despite having an elaborate skincare routine and good products, your skin may not glow due to the following mistakes.
1. Leaving Your Makeup on Overnight
Sleeping with makeup on is a common skincare mistake. It is super important to remove all make up, every night before you sleep. Aside of removing make up, cleansing rids your skin of dirt and pollutants that accumulate on your skin during the day. Going to sleep with makeup on causes a number of problems, these include collagen degeneration which leads to premature aging, uneven skin tone, black heads and clogged pores which result in acne and several types of breakouts. Commit to cleansing your skin before sleeping no matter how exhausted you are. Use a cleanser, oil or facial wipes, be sure to cleanse thoroughly until there is no residue of makeup left
2. Not Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes & Sponges
Constant use of make-up brushes and sponges causes a buildup of bacteria, grease and oil and, and can lead to infection, acne, breakouts and irritation. These can in turn lead to blemishes, which may take a long time to clear. It is therefore important to clean them regularly, to kill harmful bacteria. It is key to deep clean your makeup brushes and sponges every 7 to 10 days, there are several products available that you can use to ensure removal of bacteria. If you use a significant amount of makeup, it is advisable to clean your brushes after each use. Make cleaning your brushes part of your routine. Wash by rinsing the tips of your brushes under, running, lukewarm water. Remove excess makeup, then fill a bowl with warm water and brush cleaner. Continue washing until water runs clean. Squeeze excess water and lay your brushes on a dry, clean surface.
3. Touching Your Face
Your hands are prone to carrying bacteria due to handshakes, handling phones, laptops, doorknobs and more. Your hands also carry oils naturally. Therefore, touching your face constantly, is one of the easiest ways to breakout out. It is important to wash your hands regularly to reduce the risk of transferring bacteria and dirt to your face. Avoid touching your face if it is a habit. You can break the habit by keeping your hands busy or being mindful of what you are doing with your hands.
4. Unhealthy Diet
We have touched on this issue on previous articles, and I cannot emphasize it enough. It is a less obvious skincare mistake, however consuming too much fast food, sugar, alcohol, and fried foods does in fact affect the skin. After consuming too much sugar or fried foods, ever notice how your skin may break out? it is important to cut out unhealthy foods and incorporate more fruit, vegetables, and fiber into your diet. Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking adequate water, teas and infused water which is also super beneficial. My favorite way to infuse water is with cucumber, lemon, mint or with any fruit that is available.
5. Not Changing Bed Linen Frequently
You spend one third of your life in bed, so clean bed linen is not negotiable. I will explain further, so you understand how linen directly affects your skin. Bed linen carries bacteria that can build up in its fibers. Linen can also contain dead skin debris, sweat and debris amongst others. All these can cause breakouts, pimples, whiteheads and worsen acne even if you have cleansed your skin. If you may have been wondering how linen is linked to skin, well if it contains any of all the above mentioned, it will affect your skin. It is therefore important to Keep your linen clean, this keeps breakouts and infections away. It is ideal to wash your linen weekly and your pillowcase every 3 to 4 days.
In conclusion I encourage you to be mindful of what you are putting into your body and how clean your surroundings are. Being aware of these and choosing what is hygienic and healthy, will contribute immensely to having healthy skin. Remember wellness and good skin cannot be separated.
