Gibson C ivil Contracting
As a child, Wayne Gibson loved playing in the dirt. As an adult, not a whole lot has changed. Only now, he does it for a living. After more than 20 years working in the civil earthmoving industry, Wayne started his own business, Gibson Civil Contracting, in 2008. It started as a one-man operation with one bobcat. Today he has a team of five men, four bobcats, a 12G grader, loader, side tippers, five-tonne excavator, water trucks and a small dozer. The business growth has allowed Gibson Civil Contracting to take on far bigger jobs, working for major construction companies and other large projects including the Bellamack Gardens, Northern Transportables site duplication and Leanyer Sub Station. “I think some people still think we’re still the bobcat guy,” Wayne said. “It’s a bit bigger than that these days.” Gibson Civil Contracting specialises in shed pads, industrial compounds, driveways, stormwater and culvert drainage, machinery hire and landscaping. The business is now also a CAL accredited contractor. “We do everything from house pads to 20,000 square metre industrial yards,” Wayne said. “And we have a no job is too big or too small attitude, but we never take on more than we can handle. “Some people can fall into the trap of saying yes when really the answer is no and then the customer gets let down. But we never double book or say yes to a job we can’t do. “So you know if we say were going to be there, we’ll be there.” Wayne arrived in Darwin as a four year old, at the same time as Cyclone Tracy. He spent 17 years in Katherine, but has always lived in the Territory. He has a wife and two children, and it sounds like they’re following in dads footsteps. “They’re both into their tip-truck toys, so I think so,” he said.
