THE HISTORY OF THE WATLING STREET FOOTBALL GROUND, 1921 – 1992.

Next year celebrates 100 years since the Darts bought and developed their new ground in Watling Street. We are hoping that with the help of this article, more items of interest will be unearthed from their hidy-holes, perhaps in the loft or an outbuilding or under the stairs. The sort of items that we are keen to find are photographs, programmes and newspaper cuttings, but these are not only of when Dartford were involved but also of the many local cup finals that took place on the ground. These include charity competitions such as the Livingstone Hospital and Matt Capon Cups, Stone and Wilmington Charity Cups, and the Dartford & District and North Kent leagues that includes Minor and Junior cups. Other sports have been held at the football ground including Boxing, Wrestling, Baseball, Lawn Tennis and American Football but there is, sadly, a distinct lack of memorabilia of these sports played at Watling Street ground. We would also welcome hearing of people’s memories, not only of matches, but perhaps such things as volunteering to spruce up the ground
