LOWER THAMES CROSSING

identified as the preferred option for the new crossing and since then Highways England has undergone three years of intense planning, consultation and investigation work to get to the point we are at today.

More than a decade after a Government study looked at options for an additional Thames crossing due to increasing demand in Dartford, I am delighted that planning permission to build the Lower Thames Crossing is finally to be submitted in the coming months.

This project is set to be one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the country and will not only be beneficial for the surrounding area, but also a key part of the UK road network. With 14.3 miles of road, bridges, viaducts and underpasses, it will have the third largest bored tunnels in the world, running 175 feet below the Thames.

As well as giving motorists a choice of where to cross the Thames, the LTC will add road capacity, reduce delays and will help the local economies by creating thousands of jobs and encouraging investment into the area. The tunnels will provide three lanes in each direction, with a speed limit of 70mph.

will also get to meet like-minded people – some groups are very sociable and go for a drink afterwards, but you can always opt out or choose the more solitary tasks if you want some alone time with nature.

“How much time do I need for it?” This is a pretty flexible role. Many meet-ups are either weekly or fortnightly, but there is no pressure to attend every session, although giving the organiser a heads-up would be appreciated to help them plan the day’s tasks. Sessions typically last about 3-4 hours, but again this isn’t set in stone.

“Are there any requirements?” None at all!

“Anything else I need to know?” Any equipment required is provided to you, including gloves.

As we enter into the autumn months, we’re lucky enough to have some beautiful woodlands and country parks right on our doorstep, where we can fully appreciate the leaves changing colour and enjoying the fresher air. However, as amazing as nature is, sometimes these areas need some help from us humans, and this is where you can get involved – volunteering in the country parks, woodlands or heath nearby.

“This sounds great, how do I get involved?” Details of volunteering at Darenth Country Park (every other Thursday) and Dartford Heath (every Tuesday) can be found on the Dartford Council website at https://www.dartford.gov.uk/ by-category/leisure-and-culture2/parks-and-open-spaces/ volunteer-groups. There is also a volunteer group run by the Woodlands Trust that maintains Joyden’s Wood, which meets every Wednesday morning, but hasn’t yet re-started since the pandemic began. It’s also worth checking the notice boards in your local country park for details of any other volunteer groups. If you don’t fancy parks, heaths and woods, there are similar groups that work to maintain waterways – it’s worth a Google search if you’re interested.

DEDICATED CLUB ATHLETE GIVING SOMETHING BACK IN VIRTUAL LONDON MARATHON

able to recover from her injuries, passing away in May 2016. If she had survived, she and her family would have come to rely on the charity Headway.

Amongst the services that Headway provides are grants to families of head injury victims, the headway helpline, and a team of acute trauma support nurses.

I’m Steve Denniss, I’ve lived in Dartford for about 5 years now and I was delighted, at the age of 60, to have gained a place in the Virgin Money London Marathon 2020 running for Headway - the Brain Injury Association.

My desire to run for Headway is borne out of a lasting memory of the love and fun brought into our lives by Amy Haskew, daughter of my cousins Richard and Liz. Amy was a very talented young lady full of life and adventure. In 2016 She was studying for her master’s degree in Forensic Psychology in Canterbury at the University of Kent.

Whilst on an extended holiday in Australia she was involved in a tragic cycling accident. Following the accident, she was on life support in a Melbourne hospital for just over a month. Sadly, Amy wasn’t

My journey towards this London Marathon experience has been strongly influenced by living in Dartford. Since moving here in 2015 I have joined several local groups including the Dartford Concert Band and the Dartford Harriers Athletic Club. I became a Harrier at the beginning of 2017 to help with my running and the club has encouraged and developed my abilities significantly over the past 3 years enabling me to take on greater distances. In my bid for the London Marathon the club has helped with training and useful tips and advice. When I undertook to run 10 - 10ks over 10 consecutive days to help with my fundraising in September 2019 the Harriers helped with pre-event training, and organised 2 of the runs as part of the clubs busy training programme. My involvement with the Harriers in giving something back through my charity running earned me the award for Dedicated Club Athlete 2019. I’ve also completed over 100 parkruns in Dartford and have been on the volunteering team on more than a dozen occasions. Many of the park-runners have contributed to my fundraising.

Fundraising was going very well, and our total passed the £3000 mark in March. Obviously with the coronavirus pandemic, headway, like many charities has been hit hard and any further amount we can raise will be gratefully received and wisely spent.

I recently had a short spell in Darent Valley hospital during which I thought I might need to call on the services of Headway myself. Fortunately, I’m recovering now, and I am convinced that the health, fitness, and mental positivity I have gained due to

running and playing music here in Dartford has been a major factor in my recovery.

The London Marathon this year on October 4th will be a closed event for the elite athletes and a virtual one for the rest of us. Covid 19 and my time in hospital have disrupted my training and I won’t be ready to run an allout marathon. However, it being the 40th anniversary of the event I have set myself a 4x10 challenge, hoping to cover the marathon distance in 4 - 10k routes each starting and finishing from my home all on the day. Actually, each run will be a little over 10.5k to make up the 42.2K total. If you see me in the Dartford area walking running or jogging in my bright yellow headway vest on October 4th, please give me a wave.

THE POWER OF REFLECTION

By Clair Yates Depending on your experience of yoga, you may or may not be surprised to hear me say that yoga is at its heart a contemplative practice and reflective journaling is a key tool. Of course yoga can be used purely for exercise and the physical aspect of the practice has the potential to bring many benefits including a stronger more flexible body, less tension, less aches and pains, so we can live in our bodies more comfortably.

As well as the physical gains, yoga encourages us to live more consciously with greater awareness and as such can bring benefits to all aspects of daily life.

Reflection gives us the opportunity to tap into our awareness more fully, so we can make the most our insights, to bring perspective and direction, it provides us with counsel.

If we don’t know where to start, it can be useful to ask ourselves some questions. Cruising is a form of holiday that is much loved by all generations and has been massively affected by the current coronavirus crisis. Even before Covid-19 swept across the world, cruise lines had higher standards of hygiene and cleanliness than many hotels, making a return the seas just a question of time.

With the number of cases rising in almost every country around us, including ours, it is hard to keep positive about any form of return to normality when it comes to cruise holidays. However, as we have said before, travel remains a very personal choice.

Cruise lines, much like hotels, cannot stand idle and wait for things to improve of their own accord, so they are raising their standards even more. In this article we will bring to you the current new protocols and proposed plans for a wider around the world restart in ocean cruising.

In the last week, Royal Caribbean, NCL Cruise and Carnival announced their adoption of a strong set of health protocols that represent core elements for returning to service in the Americas by the end of the year, pending support and approval of regulators and destinations. Resumption of operations in the Americas, the largest cruise market in the world, is a critical next step now that initial sailing has begun effectively with strict protocols in Europe.

The successful sailings in Europe by MSC Cruises, Costa, TUI Cruises, Ponant and others has led to the development of effective protocols and were the building blocks of these core elements.

Highlights of the approach include: • Testing. 100% testing of passengers and crew for COVID-19 prior to embarkation • Mask-Wearing. THE GREAT BRITISH SEPTEMBER CLEAN

As part of the Great British September Clean local Councillors were joined by local residents to do a socially distanced, rule of six, litter pick.

For Longfield Academy pupil, (13 year old) Ben Greenwood, this was his second day of collecting dropped rubbish, having already filled four waste bags in a solo litter pick around Greenhithe the day before.

Originally named the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ the national Keep Britain Tidy initiative was moved from the original date in March, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and renamed the Great British September Clean.

Completing the local ‘Clean’ whilst conforming to covid regulations was a challenge but local Councillors David Mote and Danny Nickel knew the secret was to keep their event small and targeted.

Having finished their quick two hour clean around the Eagles Road area Councillor Mote explained: “Our paramount priority was to stay safe and still do our bit to support the Keep Britain Tidy’s September clean. It really doesn’t take long to pop out and pick up dropped rubbish in your local streets and the campaign runs until the 27 September.”

SETTING UP YOUR DIET

Whilst the word “diet” has been abused and conjures ideas of some restrictive, hellish eating plan to follow for X number of weeks, it’s actually just “what you eat”.

Not “a Diet”, just your diet.

So, how do you set it up to ensure you get what you want from it?

We’re not looking to remove all of the foods you love, in fact, it’s very important to keep at least some of those in to ensure that you’re actually able to follow and stick to your diet long-term.

Counting down the days until you can have a blowout is NOT a good way to go about it.

My advice though would be to make sure no more than 20% of your calories are coming from those less-than-ideal foods. So, if you want a beer, or a wine, or some chocolate, or some crisps/cakes/biscuits/ice-cream etc. etc., just make sure you’re not over-consuming them.

- Start with your calorie target. This should be worked out in a sensible way (not just guessed or copied from someone else) and will be your starting point - you can always adjust the calories further down the line if you need to.

- Now work out your protein target – a good starting point for most people will be 1g per pound bodyweight (so, if you weigh 150lbs, you’ll aim for 150g of protein per day).

For most people, this may seem like a lot, and may make you realise how much you’ve been under-eating protein; but set this target and aim to get within 10g of it every day.

- Work out how many calories you’re getting from protein (amount of protein in grams multiplied by 4), so for the example above, 150g of protein = 600 calories - Subtract those calories from your total calorie target and see what you have left.

This can then be split between carbohydrates and fats however you see fit.

- At this point, if you want to include some of your treat foods, work out how many calories you can allocate to them (no more than 20% of your total) and factor those in.

- The remainder should be filled with as much veg, fruit, healthy fats, and unprocessed carbohydrates as possible, keeping within your calorie target.

9 times out of 10, “Diets” fail because they’re too restrictive and impossible to follow for any extended period of time.

By planning in the foods you’re normally told to avoid, but doing it in a way that keeps you on track, you won’t

feel deprived or starved and won’t be suffering and hoping your willpower holds out all week.

This may seem over-simplified, but it really isn’t a complicated thing.

- Hit your calorie target daily - Hit your protein target daily - Keep the “bad” foods in, but in smaller quantities (less than 20% of calories) - Fill out the rest of your calories with veg and unprocessed carbs - Don’t avoid all fats – they’re essential for health!

Add to this a good training program – nothing excessive (but you must work hard when you do train) – and you really can’t fail.

Again, I realise this all sounds simple, and that you’ve likely tried and failed numerous times, but you can’t defy the laws of physics.

If you’ve “done this before and it didn’t work” then your numbers were wrong.

Often, it’s a case of underestimating how much you’re actually eating, not logging your food accurately, guessing portions sizes (and making them too big), thinking that drinks don’t count, or expecting to binge at the weekend with no consequences.

And also over-estimating how many calories you’re burning in your workouts (HINT: It’s not enough to have an extra “treat” with your coffee!)

Nutrition can get extremely complicated, but it doesn’t need to.

Keep it simple. You don’t need anything fancy or extreme, and you don’t need to fully understand all of the science to benefit from it.

Just follow these steps and get stuck in.

THE HISTORY OF THE WATLING STREET FOOTBALL GROUND, 1921 – 1992.

Next year celebrates 100 years since the Darts bought and developed their new ground in Watling Street.

We are hoping that with the help of this article, more items of interest will be unearthed from their hidy-holes, perhaps in the loft or an outbuilding or under the stairs.

The sort of items that we are keen to find are photographs, programmes and newspaper cuttings, but these are not only of when Dartford were involved but also of the many local cup finals that took place on the ground. These include charity competitions such as the Livingstone Hospital and Matt Capon Cups, Stone and Wilmington Charity Cups, and the Dartford & District and North Kent leagues that includes Minor and Junior cups.

Other sports have been held at the football ground including Boxing, Wrestling, Baseball, Lawn Tennis and American Football but there is, sadly, a distinct lack of memorabilia of these sports played at Watling Street ground. We would also welcome hearing of people’s memories, not only of matches, but perhaps such things as volunteering to spruce up the ground

in the summer holiday and various other activities held at the Club-house plus a multitude of other ‘behind the scenes’ efforts to help and support the club through each season.

SELF-NEGLECT IS A GROWING PROBLEM

The debate about cloth vs paper, home made vs shop bought really doesn’t offer much advice. Any mask is better than no mask, although one which covers nose, mouth and fits snugly is the best. Personally, I have several washable, hand made masks, ranging from a cat’s face, through to pop art and flowers. I also line mine with a tissue because I wear glasses, and without this simple adjustment, I live in a permanent fog of condensation, rendering me more likely to fall over than contract a virus!

There’s no denying it’s still an uncertain time, with regulations changing every five minutes and the ever-present threat of local lockdowns - but at last there are signs of hope for theatre fans. Panto season is sadly cancelled for 2020, but for those willing to travel to London, there might just be a few other shows for us to enjoy by the end of this year. Here are just a few of the highlights heading to the capital in the next few months.

It’s just been announced that Nimax Theatres, who own six West End theatres - including the Palace Theatre, home to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - will start reopening from October with reduced audiences and full Covid precautions in place. These theatres will open with a special season of shows, which will act as a stopgap

until their resident shows can reopen at full capacity. The first show in the season is the hilarious This Is Going To Hurt from comedian and former junior doctor Adam Kay (22nd October-8th November at the Apollo), with more to be announced in the coming weeks.

A little further out of the city centre, the Southwark Playhouse, which has been streaming online content throughout lockdown, will be opening its doors to stage The Last Five Years (1st October-14th November), Jason Robert Brown’s much-loved musical about the romantic rollercoaster of two New Yorkers. The show, which will see audience groups separated by screens for safety, has already proved so popular that the run’s been extended by two weeks.

Also announced to reopen soon is Six, the infectious girl-power musical that lets Henry VIII’s unfortunate wives tell their side of the story. 2021 Jaguar F-Pace – the Jaguar F-Pace large SUV has been given an all-new interior and a refreshed engine line-up to go with exterior design tweaks. The interior of this refreshed large SUV is all-new, with its huge, 11.4in touchscreen that’s gently curved so that it mirrors the shape of the restyled dashboard and sits snugly against it. Below it sits a second screen, which replaces most of the conventional air-con controls.

The exterior update is more subtle with changes includes a larger front grille, reshaped bumpers and slimmer headlights. With the engines there is a new plug-in hybrid model, which combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for 398bhp.

Alternatives include updated 2.0-litre diesel engines and new 3.0-litre petrols

2021 Hyundai Tucson family SUV – the new family SUV gets plug-in hybrid power and a high-tech interior. It will be longer and wider than the car it replaces, and it sits lower to the ground, giving it a sportier stance. There’s also more space between its front and rear axles, which means improved leg room for rear passengers, and there’s a larger boot. It will alsbe far greener than before, with every engine being electrified in some way. Mild hybrid 1.6-litre petrol engines with 148bhp and 178bhp will be available at launch, with a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. A plug-in hybrid model is due to arrive soon after and should be able to cover at least 30 miles using electric power alone. In every car there will be a new 10.3in digital instrument cluster and an equally large touchscreen infotainment system. The climate controls are all touch-sensitive too. As well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone mirroring

and a wireless charging pad, there are now USB charging points in both the front and rear rows of seats. Due to arrive in early 2021 for orders prices are expected to start from around £28,000 and come with Hyundai’s five-year/ unlimited-mileage warranty.

Motorway limit cut to be cut to 60mph – Trials of lower speed limit on four stretches of motorway in England begun last month, with the aim of reducing pollution. Air quality will be monitored at the affected sites over the next 12-15 months to assess the benefits of the speed restriction. If they are proven to reduce pollution, Highways England is likely to make the 60mph limits permanent and it could impose the lower limit on other sections of motorway.

The 60mph limits will be operational 24-hours a day and drivers exceeding them are likely to be fined £100 and given three penalty points.

The locations concerned are the M1 between junction 34s and 33 at Rotherham, the M5 between junctions one and two at Oldbury, the M6 between junctions 6 and 7 at Witton and the M602 between junctions 1 and 3 near Eccles.
