HOW IS YOUR HEALTH & FITNESS?

When people think about health and fitness, they don’t often think about martial arts. Yet martial arts, such as karate are a very good way to improve your health and fitness. Going to the gym or 30 minutes on your exercise bike are considered boring by many people, but by learning karate, not only are you learning a valuable life skill, you are getting fitter and healthier without actually realising it. Also, karate is cheaper than many other sports, you just need a karate suit (gi), your licence/ insurance and then pay for your training sessions which are under a tenner. Karate is not just about self-defence, it can also help in other areas of your life, it can help you to focus and concentrate better, it teaches respect and discipline and you will be working with likeminded people. You don’t need to get fit to start karate, it doesn’t matter about your height, weight or age, karate is for everyone and you are ready to start as you are. Just wear some loose clothing and come along for a free training session. If you decide it’s not for you, that’s fine, at least you gave it a go. Yamato Damashii karate club is a family-friendly club and runs adult classes at Becket Sport Centre on Saturday mornings at 11am and also www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk

HOW THE HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE BENEFITS DARTFORD Last month Healthy Living Centre Dartford were delighted to win The Green Award at the Dartford Business Awards. So, we thought we would use our page this month to tell you about some of the things we believe helped us to win. Our Repair Café runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Tree Community Centre, and on the third Tuesday of each month at Temple Hill Community Centre. Aiming to reduce the number of items being sent to landfill simply because they are broken, our team do everything they can to mend the things brought in. Our wonderful team comprises of electricians, electronic engineers, carpenters, and all-round handymen to look at your small broken items and a team of lovely ladies with sewing machines ready to hem/repair/alter your textile things. Our aim is that you sit alongside our repair team and learn how to do small repairs yourself. We are always looking to expand our team of repairers so if you think you could help, please get in touch. This month we also have 4 additional team members undertaking a two-day bike maintenance course so look out for our new cycle project coming very soon! Our repair café runs alongside our Community Hub – a free session that aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation by offering tea/coffee and somewhere warm and friendly to meet. Each week we invite external organisations to come along and offer advice and information. There’s always an arts & craft table and plenty of space for people to bring along their own hobbies and crafts. Hot food is available for a small fee. The crafts we choose, both at our repair café and our family holiday activities usually have a recycling at heart. In recent times we have made clocks, from vinyl records, bags from T-shirts, pumpkins from old socks and hair scrunchies & hanging decorations from scraps of material. We’ve also made beautiful tea light holders from old glass jars decorated with flowers and leaves from the garden. This month we are pleased to be offering a new sewing course – giving the participants the nowledge and confidence to be able to make their own clothes and other items. We are very proud in our Dartford Growing Community project – encouraging local organisations to come together and utilise community spaces to grow food, which we can then use to deliver cookery programmes. The Community has grown 10

enormously this year – look out for a more detailed update in DL in the next month or two. Plot holders at our Community Allotments are asked to garden in the most natural way possible with composting and water conservation actively encouraged. We are lucky to have great neighbours, who have allowed us to tap into their guttering and drainpipes to divert and collect rainwater in our water tanks. This year, our community growers came together to offer their surplus fruit and vegetables – bringing them to the community centre to share with the local community. Working with local food suppliers, we are able to reduce the amount of food waste being thrown away. Our wonderful volunteers work hard to collect food surplus, that we then use in our cookery clubs and lunches or redistribute in the local community. Recipes for our Cookery clubs are often decided according to what has been collected in the few days prior. If you’ve been to any of our groups, there’s a good chance you’ve left with some bread, fruit, veg or other goodies. Keep an eye on our social media pages for when we have bits available – or just pop in when you’re passing. VOLUNTEERING WITH HEALTHY LIVING CENTRE DARTFORD We deliver and facilitate projects that offer a range of opportunities for training, volunteering, social interaction and community engagement and our volunteers are the core of who we are and what we stand for. Our wonderful volunteers are from all backgrounds and vary from retired people, jobseekers and local people with time on their hands. Mostly they are people who want to share their skills and give something back to the community. Would you like to learn how to teach others to cook and prepare meals or maybe you already have those skills to share with others? Would you like to share your IT skills or learn and progress in a regular IT class? Or if the outdoor life is for you, you

RUINS, RUNNERS AND RAIDS: WALK THROUGH HISTORY IN CENTRAL PARK By Clair Humphries

A green oasis in the middle of Dartford town centre, Central Park has been at the heart of the local community for over a hundred years. You may have visited during the summer, to enjoy musical afternoons by the bandstand or to explore the new Buccaneer Bay play area with younger (over excited) family members. If so, you’ll have been following in the footsteps of Dartford residents stretching right back to the Romans! So, come with me for a stroll through the flower gardens as we walk through the history of Central Park… Did You Know? Remains of a Roman villa exist inside the park? Traces of Roman settlements have been found the length of the River Darent, which runs along the park’s eastern boundary. History fans might be interested to know that parts of a villa in nearby Farningham have been excavated and were relocated inside by archaeologists! The area was 18

fairly rural until the Industrial Revolution, when its riverside location became a hub for the milling of corn, flour, paper and gunpowder. Local chalk pits were also utilised in the booming brick making industry, which contributed to the fortunes of one very important Dartford resident of the time… Enter Lieutenant-Colonel Charles NewmanKidd J.P. ! In 1903, local businessman Newman-Kidd bequeathed five acres of meadowland for the purpose of creating a town park. Born in 1844, he was a prominent figure in the Dartford area, the wealthy owner of Kidd’s Steam Brewery in Hythe Street and a brickmaking business in Shepherd’s Lane. In 1882 he was elected ‘Chairman of the Local Board of Health’ and he also chaired the district council until 1903. He was convinced that health and recreation went hand in hand, hence his legacy of a town park for the community.

www.dartfordliving.com

In 1905 he got his wish when the park opened to the public officially, with an additional sixteen acres of land later acquired in 1915. It was a turbulent time – the First World War saw military camps set up inside the park and in 1919 two German field guns were mounted on display. In 1922 the town’s war memorial was unveiled and has become a focal point for remembrance ceremonies ever since. Did You Know? Some of the first users of Dartford Library were soldiers staying in nearby military hospitals? Adjacent to the park entrance, Dartford Library opened in 1916 thanks to funding from library pioneer and philanthropist, Andrew Carnegie. 1921 saw the official opening of Dartford Museum inside the building, although local enthusiasts had built up considerable collections of artefacts before then. One notable collector, John Latham, began his career as a doctor in Darenth village but is better known as a naturalist and famously ‘discovered’ the Dartford Warbler bird in Bexley. Another private collection belonged to printer and author John Dunkin, who recorded his findings in ‘The History and Antiquities of Dartford.’ The Second World War had its impact on the park too, when a series of trenches were dug out to create air raid shelters. In addition, the library’s elevated dome was used as a watchpost for potential air attacks. Following the war, a

commemorative flowerbed was planted and the war memorial updated to include names of those fallen in the conflict. Health and recreation – Newman-Kidd’s main area of concern – combined in 1933, when a grass running track was laid out in Central Park. This was the foundation for Dartford Harriers’ base in the park, which developed from 1968 when a new clubhouse was built. Later, the Harriers’ cinder track was to become the centre of worldwide media attention when a young Zola Budd ran her first UK race in 1984! Money gained from media rights to the coverage was then put towards upgrading the track for future runners. And the future of Central Park is a bright one, as this Dartford landmark continues to evolve and serve the local community. So, before it gets too chilly, do take advantage of this gem on our doorstep – maybe watch the fireworks or brave Buccaneer Bay – while absorbing the history of all those who have gone before. Thanks to Charles Newman-Kidd, you can enjoy the benefits of health and recreation while appreciating his unique legacy to the town. ZIPPING FOR XANDER By Jacqui Thomas

This amazing afternoon was also graced with the presence of ex Coventry City footballer Ashley Cain who set up The Azaylia fund in memory of his baby daughter who passed away from an aggressive form of Leukaemia. The Azaylia fund has directly donated to Xander’s cause, but also two year ago Ashley Cain took part in The Azaylia for Alexander Christmas Marathon, on Christmas Day, where he raised £39,360. Upon reflection of the day Xander’s Mother, Rhonda Joseph said “It was an amazing day, if it were not for the support and donations we receive we do not know where we would be right now. Alexander is only doing so well due to the treatments we have been able to fund through amazing people stepping forward to help and donate.

In December 2020 Alexander (Xander) Josephs then aged 7 was diagnosed with a very aggressive high grade glioma brain tumour. Since then he is continuously undergoing lifesaving, pioneering treatment that is currently unavailable on the NHS. This treatment is invaluable in helping Xander beat his Cancer. On Saturday 7th October a group of 32 courageous and strong people, both adults and children, including Xander and his brother Jasper completed the longest zipwire in England at Hangloose Adventure at Bluewater. It was so humbling to see so many people getting involved and supporting Xander and his family. Two of those people were my own sister Kayleigh Driver and her friend Faye Jacob who both surpassed their individual fundraising targets.

The inhibitor treatment that Xander’s family pays for via private prescription from the Royal Marsden Hospital is currently with NICE for NHS funded approval. The whole application process is expected to be completed by Spring next year. Although this is fantastic news for all children in the UK going forward and means that no other families of children with BRAF driven Brain Tumours will have to go through the stress of fundraising, in the meantime Xander’s parents still need to continue to pay for this treatment. His treatment comes at cost of £11,269.98 for a 3 month cycle (£3756.65 per month). It started at £2600 per month almost 2 years ago when he was first diagnosed but as Xander grew so did his dosage which in turn increased the cost. Xander is doing very well on this medication so his family now have to raise enough to keep him on it until NHS approval comes through. They are trying to raise enough to cover another 10 months of treatment which amounts to a costly sum of £37,566.50.

If you would like to contribute to Xander’s Faye told me “As a parent I can’t imagine having ongoing treatment, please do so by using the to fight to find such a vast amount of money link below. to help keep my child alive. I was absolutely petrified about doing the zip wire, but if Xander www.gofundme.com/braincancerbattle can go through all that, then I wasn’t going to let my fear of heights stop me” Kayleigh echoed the same sentiment but added “Seeing this family’s strength over the last few years is making us adults push ourselves beyond our own boundaries of comfort.” Zipping for Xander was also supported by two presenters from Maritime Radio John Reen and Andy Sayers , and news reporter Claudia Navarro, who took to the sky and broadcast the event live on their radio station. 20

Many card views around Dartford from the early 1900s remain familiar, buildings still standing often with different uses today. One of the major changes being at the foot of East Hill, a thriving row of shops known as Overy Liberty. Opposite stood The Royal Victoria Mill of the flour miller family Keyes. Today the ground floor remains in use as a hall, next to which runs the Fast Track Bus Lane. Nearby, at one time, horse drawn wagons were driven down a ramp into the shallow river, during the hot Summer months, to give the the horses a drink and cool down but also to expand dried out wooden wheels with loose joints, to stop creaking and coming apart. Horse drawn vans and carts of the local traders are seen on their rounds in many High Street views and streets around town. People captured in the scenes may well have descendants around today! With the huge and fast-growing population in Dartford, it is time to rethink not only the lawand-order strategy for the area, but changes to the highways and roads, in order to prevent the appalling gridlock that affects the town. Dartford isn’t a small market town any longer; it deserves a far better deal from the national organisations than it gets. I hope that the council pushes for a better deal for the local population in any future plans.

GOODBYE OR AU REVOIR? I belong to a couple of social media sites aimed at Dartford residents. Although no longer living there, I like to keep up with the lively news and occasional rants featured online. I’m not alone in moving away but wanting to stay in touch either. This raises a puzzling question: if the town was such a big part of many peoples’ lives, why are they leaving? Work opportunities, perhaps a new start in life, maybe a realisation that the creeping influence of London is not what we want. We all have opinions. The years old problems of poor shopping opportunities, the atrocious road system or the general lack of suitable infrastructure should also be considered. I read with sadness of the increase in violent crime, and the all too frequent stated fears of going into the town at night. Personally, I found it an odd decision by Kent Police to centralise the police force at Ebbsfleet. Historical news reports suggest it was not a universally popular decision, and recent events seem to bear this out. The promised police station shop front in the town with a 24hour police presence (a police station then) is situated at the council offices. I believe a more central position in the High Street would provide not only a welcoming presence to local residents, but the police would be closer to the scene should any of the local clubs, bars, shops and restaurants require a speedy response to trouble. Possibly, the very sight of the police 26

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES! A glance in the bathroom mirror recently, had me panicking and searching for the tweezers. I seemed to have sprouted a good deal of long white hair around my chin, seemingly overnight. If I’d stopped and thought about it, the realisation that cuddling a white cat while I was smothered in moisturiser was the answer to my unwanted facial growth! This made me think about all the other ways my body is letting me know I’m not twentyfive anymore! Creaky knees, thinning hair, skin, drier than the Sahara plus the lines on my face that require a dollop of filler rather than a tinted moisturiser nowadays. How does Joan Collins manage to look in such good condition? She’s got twenty years on me! I could have fillers in my cheeks and lips, brows lifted, facial peels, you name it. I might look several decades younger, but I wouldn’t feel right. For me, facial lines, greying hair and the other age-related changes are what makes me ‘me’. It reminds me of the good times - too much wine and loud music when young. Motherhood with all its joys and worries. Daily life routine. I wouldn’t change it. David Bowie nailed it with his quote “Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been”. We are pretty amazing people – we should be proud of our survival, whatever stage we’re at. We are all works in progress. We rock! Take care people

DARTFORD’S PATRICK BRADY BECOMES UK PRO SERIES 2023 CHAMPION

Dartford’s Patrick Brady becomes the first teenager to win the Men’s UK Pro league. After 8 weeks, 480 matches with over 100 players, the 2023 Finals Week was hosted last week at the National Tennis Centre, culminating in two dramatic Finals and the crowning of the 2023 Champions: Patrick Brady and Elena Malygina.

minute break from Hussey came too late, and Patrick wrapped it up 6-3, 6-3. Patrick who lives in Sutton at Hone said, “I’ve been really training hard and set out this season to try and win a significant title. I’m overjoyed to have achieved this and want to thank all of those who have been supporting me, especially my family. I’d also like to thank Dartford Borough Council who In August Patrick won the first ever Pro league have helped me through their Salute to Youth men’s grass Finals which enabled him to qualify scheme.” for the Finals. However, Giles Hussey was sure to be his toughest opponent yet– 8 years his senior and sitting nearly 400 places above him in the ATP rankings, Hussey had not dropped a set all week. Patrick remained unperturbed by these facts, swiftly getting the upper hand in the first set by securing an early break for 2-0. He led the way the rest of the first set; a second break of serve from Patrick left Hussey trailing 5-1 at one point, and Patrick went on to win the set 6-3. Both men were pulling out all the shots, it was a match packed full of incredible points to the delight of the crowd; many of which had travelled up from Dartford. The second set had a similar tale to the first; despite his best efforts, Hussey just wasn’t able to stop Patrick winning the first 4 games. A last28

COPING AS A CARER FOR A LOVED ONE By Christina Uppenkamp - Home Instead

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford. In this instalment, we will share some essential tips for those of you caring for a loved one. Being a family carer can be one of the most fulfilling things that you can do, but on the flip side, it can also be an overwhelming and thankless task.

If you’d like to discuss how we might help with respite cover or other support services, please do get in touch. If you have any ideas for a future topic, please write to c.uppenkamp@dartford.homeinstead. co.uk - we’d love to hear from you!

Anyone that cares for somebody is likely to have many unanswered questions regarding both the care they are giving to their loved one and the care they owe themselves. To help answer some of those questions, we have compiled some top tips to help you become the best carer you can be: 1. Take a guilt-free break – Allowing yourself some alone time to unwind a few times each month will help you to re-energise and provide a much better quality of care. 2. Be patient – It can often take time to get into a consistent care routine. Keeping calm and patient will allow this to happen whilst also respecting your loved one’s dignity and independence. 3.Help them to feel good – A new haircut or item of clothing can do wonders for your loved one’s confidence and self-worth, so don’t forget to treat them every now and then!

4. Accept that they have changed – The person you care for is unlikely to be the person you knew them to be. Accepting this change will help you to stay in the here and now and give the best care possible.

By Dhiren Ganesh In this month’s article we look at a new electric & PHEV vehicles from the European manufacturers coming to the market in 2024.

coupé SUV offers up to 279 miles of range, while petrol-engined versions of the regular BMW X2 are also available. The iX2 is the mini-me of the BMW X4 and X6 coupé SUVs. And unlike its larger siblings, the iX2 is fully electric; a combustion engine X2 version will follow later. The iX2 xDrive30 (the sole model available at launch) has two electric motors for 309bhp in total, sent to all four wheels. This set-up takes the iX2 from 0-62mph in 5.6sec, before continuing on to a limited top speed of 112mph. The new iX2 is longer and taller than the previous BMW X2, and its wheels have been pushed further into the corners in order to boost interior space. Its dashboard is reminiscent of the larger BMW iX’s, featuring a 10.7in digital instrument panel and a 10.25in infotainment screen housed within one long panel. Prices for the iX2 start from £56,540. Petrol versions cost less, however, with prices starting from £39,565 for the sDrive20i and rising £47,395 for the M35i XDrive when on sale from 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan – this is the new to Toguan which has some changes from March 2024. the previous version rather than an overall change. The family SUV’s exterior has a new, slimmer headlights, a large lower grille and a rear lighting strip that stretches the full width of the car. Two 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models will be offered. Badged eHybrid, they develop 201bhp and 268bhp.It will have a larger (19.7kWh) battery for a range of around 60 miles which is better than most rivals. Charging speeds have increased, with the new battery able to accept 11kW rather than 3.6kW from an AC connection. That cuts the time taken for a full charge at home from three and a half hours to around two hours. That 1.5-litre engine is also available as a mild hybrid. Badged eTSI, it uses a 48-volt electric motor to boost power, 2024 Volkswagen Passat – All-new Volkswagen improving efficiency when pulling away and Passat gets plug-in hybrid power and familyenabling it to travel on electric power alone for friendly space, but arrives in estate form only. If you choose the plug-in hybrid version; it can travel up to 62 miles without using a drop of fuel, so they might never hear its petrol engine running. The plug-in hybrid system comes in 201bhp and 268bhp variants, each combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 19.7kWh battery, The new Passat’s interior looks more futuristic with its centrepiece a new touchscreen infotainment system with a screen that measures up to 15in. Standard kit includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, USB-C charging for your devices, and adaptive cruise control to help take the stress out of long journeys. Luxury touches include the option for 14-way electric front seats with cooling, heating and massage functions. Prices for the new Passat are likely to start from around £38,000 for mild-hybrid 2024 BMW iX2 electric SUV – Electric BMW iX2 models when on sale from Summer 2024. 36

What to do:

VIENNESE BISCUITS By Debbie Dickinson

Visiting my mum recently I was reminded of the times we used to go to monthly tea dances in the village halls around Ashford, where I grew up. Halfway through each evening a tray would be passed round with a selection of cakes and biscuits on it. I always chose the Viennese Biscuits – crumbly yet mouthwatering and the end dipped in chocolate. And often sandwiched together with buttercream. My recipe includes a couple of egg yolks (look back to a previous recipe for a meringue recipe to use the egg white). If you’d like to leave the egg out, just reduce the flour amount by about 50g. You will need: 220g Softened Butter 100g Icing Sugar 2 Egg Yolks 1 tsp Vanilla Extract 250g Plain Flour 50g Cornflour Optional Chocolate Buttercream – made with equal measures of Butter and Icing Sugar.

44

In a large mixing bowl mix the Butter and the Icing Sugar together until pale and creamy. The butter needs to be soft to ensure no lumps of butter stay in the mix. Separate the Eggs into small bowl and add the Yolks into the mix. The Whites can be frozen to use at a later date. Add the Vanilla Extract and combine. Fold in the Flour and Cornflour gradually to form a soft dough. Pop your dough into a piping bag with a round or star nozzle and pipe sausages or circles onto a lined baking tray. If you don’t have a piping bag – or your mix is a little too stiff to pipe - use 2 spoons to drop shapes onto the baking tray. Bake at 170°C for 12-14 minutes until just golden brown. Leave on the baking tray for a few minutes to cool then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. If you wish, you can sandwich together in pairs with buttercream and dip into melted chocolate. Enjoy! xxx
