English Touring Opera

THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA

Lucretia is subject to a vicious test of loyalty at the hands of the decadent prince Tarquinius, unleashing a cruel and reckless series of events that have shattering consequences. English Touring Opera present The Rape of Lucretia, Benjamin Britten’s response to a world left in ruins by war. A brutally relevant and chilling exploration of the abuse of power, The Rape of Lucretia shows the darkest reaches of human nature and the perseverance of hope in a piece underscored by beautiful music and lyricism from one of the UK’s greatest composers.

Both operas are sung in English, with English surtitles.

Friday 17 October 7.30pm

Presented by

THE ELIXIR OF LOVE

Beautiful and popular Adina is completely out of Nemorino’s league. Shy and sincere but desperate to catch her eye, the arrival of the smooth-talking Doctor Dulcamara and his apparently miraculous concoctions provides the perfect opportunity to change his fate. But Nemorino soon discovers that love is rarely straightforward, and that perhaps his ‘Elixir’ is just wine after all…

English Touring Opera return to Darlington with Donizetti’s sparkling The Elixir of Love in a new production set in a down-on-its-luck seaside town.

Saturday 18 October 7.30pm

7,000 stranded passengers. One small town. A remarkable true story.

This smash hit show shares the incredible real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives with open hearts.

Tickets available only through DarlingtonOS

This is an amateur production

A new adaptation of Charles Dickens' spine tingling masterpiece The Signalman. Set in 1880, this is the exquisitely unnerving tale of a tormented signalman haunted by visions of impending disaster on his isolated stretch of line. Can a well meaning traveller, who chances upon the lonely signal box while out walking, calm the man’s fears before he spirals into self destruction?

Felix Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto takes you by the hand and leads you on a journey that’s full of unexpected twists and turns. It’s full of the composer’s unpredictable and acidic style, and its mood changes without warning; one moment it’s cheeky, then it’s challenging and aggressive, then perhaps sentimental and schmaltzy. It keeps everyone - audience and musician - on their toes. Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony captures the awe of viewing the majestic Scottish landscape perfectly.
