As my good friend and resident psychotherapist Pam Custers says, winter is a time for reflection, for pausing between the anxieties of autumn and the hopes of spring, to take stock and count our blessings. Outside my window it’s one of those grey, wintry days that makes you think nature has given up for good. But looking down at my desk and seeing the blaze of vibrant colours, pictures and stories that are miraculously assembling themselves into this winter issue, I’m reminded once again of the astonishing talent, energy and creative brilliance that flourishes in our supposedly sleepy parish.

So here’s to the brave hearts and high achievers - like Alex Nemeth, cover-girl and conqueror of the 7 Summits, Rygas for winning Best Overall Business in Merton, Mick Dore who won the coveted Andrew Wakefield Award and all our local independent entrepreneurs who are weathering these uncertain times.

But it’s also a time to celebrate who and what we are - to indulge our taste buds over the festive season (see our top restaurant picks) and to reboot our looks for Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s with all our fab beauty experts.

CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN How local girl Alex Nemeth followed her dream She’s a professional sportswoman, an award-winning fine art mountain photographer and one of Wimbledon’s own. Now Alexandra Nemeth has joined an elite set of men and women who have climbed the 7 Summits

8pm May 17, 2018 Camp 4 South Col, Mt Everest. Elevation: 7,900m.

I’m outside my tent wearing a down suit, crampons, triple boots and a backpack, breathing under the oxygen mask. When I turn around, I see a snake of head lamps... There must be at least 40 climbers already on their way up. I’m here, and I’m ready.

My 7 Summits story began in April 2014. I needed a challenge that would test me as a photographer and climbing the seven highest mountains on each continent fitted the bill.

I spent a couple of days researching the mountains, weather windows and a possible schedule. Two months later, I was on the top of Europe’s highest point, Elbrus in Russia.

It was my second time in high altitude (I solo trekked for three weeks in the Himalayas back in 2012). Being the first group in the season on the north side, we had the entire place for ourselves. A complete white-out at the top, but the first mountain was in the bag and I was eager

to do more. A month later I solo climbed Mont Blanc and in September 2014 I made it to the top of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.

Keen to do another expedition in the same year, I found myself on the Ylyushin, a Russian cargo plane heading towards the coldest desert in the world, Antarctica. One of the most remote and coldest climbs, I was in my element. We were pulling sleds to Camp I, from there we climbed on fixed ropes up to Camp II. The sun doesn’t set in Antarctica, but with an eye mask I tricked the body into rest mode, which I desperately needed,after hauling up group gear to Camp II with a couple of guys the day before. We summited Vinson in -37ᵒC and descended to Base Camp where we waited for the twin Otter plane to fly us back to Union Glacier before taking the Ylyushin to Punta Arenas, Chile.

North America’s highest point, Denali was up next. I knew it was a physically demanding climb so I trained like a lunatic. Seven guys from the States and myself set off after sitting out three

bad weather days. Climbing Denali was everything I enjoy about mountaineering; hard days without support, stunning landscape, bit of technical stuff, the complete unknown and breath-taking summit views. In June 2015 we reached the top, the 4th of my 7 Summits.

Mentally, Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America was probably the toughest trip but on January the 2nd 2016 I stood on the top after a probing seven days on the mountain.

Next in the row was Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia in March 2017 which was the shortest expedition! Half an hour after landing at Base camps (4,000m) flying up from sea level, we were pushing to the summit, (climbers usually enjoy two days of acclimatization). The highlight was the Tyrolean traverse, especially for someone with a fear of heights!

To prepare for Everest, I climbed the Matterhorn and trained in the Himalayas last year but the three months leading up to Everest were crucial.

I was very fortunate for the support from the Fit8 gym in Wimbledon Village and worked with some fantastic personal trainers.

Dendi Sherpa and I left the Death Zone at 8.30pm. We changed oxygen bottles on the Balcony and carried on up. I knew there was

something wrong, I had been having trouble with the mask, so every second step I had to pull the mask away from my face to ‘breath’.

It was suffocating me. When we reached a safe spot we swapped masks, and continued. The next thing I vividly remember, is the view of an orange line in the horizon and the Himalayan giants surrounding us, took my breath away.

Literally. We changed bottles again, under the Hillary Steps, by which point the sun was up and we could see where we were. Hardly any space for one boot, a drop on the left into Nepal and Tibet on the right, meant I had to focus on every move I made. Finally, we could see the summit but the approach was painfully slow, climbers stopped in front of us. Dendi unclipped us from the rope and together we made the final steps to the prayer flags. Standing on the top of the world is a feeling I simply can’t describe. We spent 40 minutes on the summit without oxygen before heading back to Camp 4. After a short sleep we descended all the way back to Base Camp where I celebrated my birthday and completing the 7 summits!

Local dance school Siegeris Dance, celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a magical performance of “Second Star to the Right”, an adaption of Peter Pan, at the New Wimbledon Theatre

O

ver 400 local dancers delighted audiences with 2 action-packed shows in autumn, filling the prestigious theatre with a near 2,000 strong crowd.

The production featured a selection of dazzling ballet, tap and modern dance routines, professional choreography and talented performances, all set to a truly inspirational mix of classical and upbeat music. Fabulous costumes ranged from teeny tiny starfish and snappy crocodiles to a mesmerizing mermaid and jellyfish sequence, complete with fluttering tentacles.

The school worked tirelessly to give their students an incredible experience that they would never forget. The energy, excitement and sense of fun exuded from every single performance and you could see how much the dancers loved being part of such a spectacular production.

The whole team, as well as parents and volunteers, couldn’t have been prouder or more impressed with what was achieved, and how well all the students performed with such passion and commitment. What a way to celebrate 10 years!

“Thembalitsha” is a Xhosa word meaning “new hope”. Our aim is exactly that – to restore hope and transform the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in South Africa.

“we empower local communities through social entrepreneurship by teaching practical, business and life skills”

Thembalitsha Foundation was established as a Non-Profit Organisation in 1997 by Kate and Frank Christie and now, 21 years later we run as a Non-Profit Company (NPC) in South Africa with over a hundred employees who serve thousands of disadvantaged people every year.

2018. He joined us with no previous training or sewing knowledge, but a great sense of enthusiasm to learn a new skill and empower himself in the process. Olwethu lives with his mother who is not able to work, leaving him with the responsibility of providing for his family. At Themba Training he learnt how to hand stitch and quickly progressed to using a domestic sewing machine.

His passion and work ethic are evident in the detail and quality of his products. As a result of this training and profits made through our Etsy store, he was able to leak-proof his home in the informal settlement of Zola. The future is looking far brighter, now that he is empowered through social entrepreneurship.

Our mission is to develop people to a point of self-reliance through education, healthcare and training. By offering a hand up rather than a handout, we equip individuals with skills for life with a focus on sustainability.

Themba Training, one of our nine initiatives, is a development program which aims to empower local communities through social entrepreneurship by teaching practical, business and life skills. Our online presence on Etsy offers a platform for locally trained individuals to sell their handmade products, empowering them to support their families and live with dignity. It focused on the challenges of an older population, the options available, how to fund later life and to live our lives to the full. Over 100 RHC members joined us for an inspirational day of talks from leading experts.

It was wonderful to see new connections being made and so much knowledge and experience being shared.

Lots more events are in the pipeline: we’re looking forward to an evening talk at Bounce Gym, our ‘Menopause Workshop’ and a ‘Back to Business’ event aimed at helping our members take their next step either in the corporate world or to start and grow their own business.

We are excited to be launching a jobs board in the New Year.

The procedure is generally a one off. You start with numbing cream for an hour. One of the medical team then administers local anaesthetic. Solicitor Christopher Goodwin on the complexities of today’s divorce proceedures

T

he Supreme Court recently announced its decision on the question of whether Mrs. Trini Owens was entitled to a divorce on the grounds of her husband’s unreasonable behaviour. She had originally been refused a decree, as the judge who heard the evidence did not consider that the matters relied on were enough to justify the claim that Mr. Owens’ behavior had been unreasonable to the point where Mrs. Owens could not be expected to continue living with him (albeit that they were by that stage already living

apart). The Supreme Court upheld the judge’s decision, unsurprisingly given the limited basis on which an appeal could be made.

However, with all due respect to Mr. and Mrs. Owens, the attention on the case was not focused on the rights and wrongs of their marriage, but on the implication the decision had for the basis of divorce in England and Wales. The present position is that the sole ground for divorce is that the marriage has broken down irretrievably, but people are then required to rely on factors either of separation

or of adultery or unreasonable behaviour.

Thus, for parties wishing to proceed with divorce immediately the marriage breaks down, they are forced to rely on either of the two latter factors.

Unreasonable behaviour is the commonest basis for divorce as, in the absence of adultery, parties would otherwise have to wait for two years separation. One spouse is therefore often faced with a petition from their spouse citing allegations of their ‘wrong doing’ which has led to the marital breakdown but which (s)he does not accept the truth of. However, contesting a petition is expensive and parties may find themselves unable to afford to challenge the other party’s allegations. It has therefore long been the practice of family lawyers to advise clients not to contest the petition whilst not accepting the truth of the allegations. However, this can still leave a party feeling aggrieved that it still appears as though they are the one to blame.

The view has been held that this confrontational requirement results in ongoing acrimony between separating couples where there should not be any, and that this is particularly damaging where there are children caught in the middle of their parents’ strife. Consequently, there has been a campaign for several years to secure a change in the law so that divorce can be obtained without the need for blame. This will, it is claimed, help to reduce animosity between parties to the ultimate benefit of the

children and the parties’ future relationship.

Following the outcome of the Owens case, the Government has now agreed to consult on a change to the divorce process.

Will this be the magic sponge to cure all the ills of marital breakdown? Will, in future, divorcing spouses get along better because they are not pushed in to adversarial roles or will they still dislike each other? I would venture to suggest that there will still be spouses who would consider their other half to be little short of ‘the spawn of Satan’ regardless of the means of bringing the marriage to an end. Similarly, where parties remain on good terms despite the marriage breakdown, they are able to see any allegations in the petition as a means to an end, and not a vituperative attack on their behavior during the marriage. Is it really the case that all the ill will between couples is a result of the process of divorce and not the circumstances leading to the breakdown? It is perhaps overly simplistic to believe that a change to the divorce process will change human nature on a grand scale. Ultimately however, if even one child can be spared the stress of parental conflict through a change to the basis for divorce, then a change in the law is surely welcome.

The long and the short of being an Ultramarathon Tourist By local superwoman Heather Waghorn

I

have a slightly unusual hobby. I like to run marathons (and anything over 26.2 miles) and I like to travel to do it. Friends call it extreme sightseeing. I’m not sure whether I run to justify the travel or the other way around.

Either way, it’s a fun combination.

Most exciting?

The New York Marathon and the thrill of being amongst 50,000 adrenaline fuelled runners on Staten Island just before dawn. Running through the 5 different boroughs, and then roar of the crowds as I finally crossed the finish line in Central Park.

Least exciting?

Milton Keynes. Twice. In one weekend! 7.5 laps (26.2 miles) clock-wise around a lake on Saturday.

Repeat the laps on Sunday but anti-clockwise for a total of 52.4 miles and 15 laps of the lake. To add to the challenge, I did this on one of the hottest weekends on record.

Biggest achievement?

Comrades 90K (56 miles) in South Africa. Known as the ultimate human race and one I’ve wanted to do for many years. Comrades is a gun-to-gun race with a hard cut-off at 12 hours, which many don’t make. It was a gruelling and emotionally fuelled day.

Furthest flung?

The Tokyo Marathon. Half way round the marathon, I found myself singing the YMCA (including actions) with a group of Japanese runners. I’m not entirely sure how or why, but it was all rather surreal.

Most unusual?

The Midnight Sun Marathon, above the Arctic Circle in Tromsø, Norway. Running through the night in complete daylight makes for a mentally unique race.

And when things didn’t go to plan?

Race to The Stones 100K race in Oxford. I was on the start line feeling fit, ready, and exhausted. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but something didn’t feel right. By 15 miles I was feeling faint and couldn’t see straight, which isn’t great when you’re running through a muddy field. I pulled out at 18 miles as there was no way I could get through another 44! It was the right decision. There are always more races.

What next?

Over the past year, running has been jostling alongside a growing love for cycling and swimming, so I now have a growing bucket list for all 3 sports. The big running event I can’t ignore is Marathon Des Sables – 156 miles in six days in the Sahara desert. It may not be next year but soon I’m going to have to enter!

“Around every corner, there was fabulous art to admire and we got to discover parts of London that we had never seen before. This made the tour really interesting and the easiest 10k run ever!”

COOK’S CORNER Want Christmas with a twist?

Makes 48

Mini Yorkshire pudding with horseradish cream and filled with fillet of beef Muffin trays Ingredients 4 large eggs 350g of plain flour 350ml of milk mixed with 240ml of water Goose fat Horseradish crème 2 heaped tablespoons crème fraiche 4 tbls horseradish sauce Salt and pepper to season 1400g beef fillet Cornichons to garnish

Method Add the eggs to the flour and whisk. Then add the water and milk mixture and whisk all together. Put a little goose fat in to each small muffin tray and put in a medium oven to heat the fat up. Once the tray is hot, pour approx.

1 inch of mixture in to each muffin hole and put back in the oven to cook for approx. 1015 mins on 180 degrees fan until well risen and very crispy. The Yorkshire puddings should have risen. Cool on a cooling rack.

Mix the crème fraiche, horseradish sauce, salt and pepper together. Turn the oven on to Gas mark 8 fan 210 but before placing it in the oven, brush the beef with a little oil and grainy mustard and seal in a frying pan on all sides. Then place the meat in a roasting tin and cook the fillet of beef on 210 degrees fan . It is delicious rare but cook according to your requirements. You will need to make a small hole in the top of the Yorkshire pudding and then you can put a little drop of the horseradish crème inside. Then put a thin slice of the roast beef in the centre of the hole. I carefully roll the piece of fillet so I can put in the hole. To finish I then slice a piece of cornichon to garnish.

DAVID LLOYD CLUB NEWS HIIT High Intensity Interval Training at any David Lloyd Club or in the comfort of your living room, says Andy Wright, lead coach at Raynes Park High Intensity Interval Training is great all year round but especially in the winter - short and sweet workouts getting the best results in a short space of time, getting ready for those festive season parties.

Short intervals of extremely high-intensity exercise involving a lot of muscle mass require a tremendous amount of oxygen, during both the work interval and the recovery periods. As a result, HIIT workouts train your body to tolerate and quickly recover from periods of high-

intensity exercise. A typical HIIT session should last anywhere between 4 minutes (like Tabata) and 15 minutes. Overuse injuries can arise if workouts are too long; cap HIIT workouts at 30 minutes. If you want optimal results, you’ll lift weights 5 times per week, and do HIIT cardio 3 – 4 times per week, for about 25 minutes per session. I then go lift for 45-60 minutes and my post-workout meal of about 40 grams of protein and 100 grams of carbohydrate is the first of the day.

It would be better to do it after weight training if your goal is muscle building and/or fat burning. If you are doing HIIT first and then doing weight training it will seriously affect your performance during your lifts. You can also be pretty tired from your HIIT cardio and might even mess up your lifting form.

I

need to join a selfhelp group for people who live in minimalist houses. I don’t know how I ended up as a Minimalist. I suppose it started with the odd episode of Grand Designs, then going for cocktails in jam-jars under railway arches, and before I knew it, I’d moved from a Victorian ‘Orgy of Chintz’ Villa to a house with no towel rails or lavatory-roll holders, (they compromise the aesthetic.) All the floors are polished concrete, of course.

And the cupboard doors have no handles - you have to pat experimentally for them to spring open - except they don’t, because, as in all modern houses, they are so ruddy clever-clever they have gone up their own jacksies.

Minimalist houses need a lot of cupboards, because it is important that nobody can see you have things like cups, or coats. And yes, naturally, there is a sliding glass roof onto a brutalist ‘found space’ to lounge upon stiffly, whilst wearing a black polo-neck jumper. Except the sliding glass roof sticks open, so

when it rains, it rains into the house. Like AELTC always probably dreads will happen with theirs. And there’s an amazing walk-in shower - but with a lightly-frosted glass wall onto the landing. So while I’m standing in it I’m also screaming ‘Nobody come upstairs! Naked mother in view!’ Which I would have thought certainly compromises the aesthetic.

earth was I thinking? (Yes that’s right - I mean I CHOSE it.) I was the high-priestess of all things Zoffany, having gone through a really bad bout of Laura Ashley in the ‘80’s. (Do you think yellowand-blue will ever come back as a combo?) Everywhere was cushions, cushions, swags and cushions. My collection of miniature china cats took up an entire mantlepiece. The house was a popular filming location for low-budget penny-dreadfuls which aired on obscure American TV channels, featuring murders and suicides. We don’t notice the staleness that creeps up on our homes, but presumably the directors liked the morbid aura my house gave off. The sort of place where a washed-up, middle-aged socialite would end it all with a couple of bottles of champagne and barbiturates. Probably quite good I moved on, come to think of it.

Admittedly, in our last house we had wallpaper featuring Roman maidens and garlandbedecked oxen. What on

Anyway - must go. Something is beeping at me. Is it time for meditation? Or is the fridge telling me we’re out of sushi?
