I've really enjoyed putting this summer issue together, and getting caught up in the anticipation of Kingston’s art-filled summer. Kicking off with Kingston Artists Open Studios where 70 artists show and sell their work at fabulous prices. We’ll be spoilt for choice in July when the International Youth Arts Festival comes to town for the eighth year, bringing us young, talented performers from around the world. To get into the festival spirit, Rose Theatre is putting on Ignition Dance Festival the weekend before. Hampton Pool summer concerts are not to be missed either.

niela is back, after a two year break, working as part of the artistic team at the Creative Youth, who are the organisers of the International Youth Arts Festival. She was the festival’s Creative Director since its inception in 2009 until 2014.

As if this wouldn’t keep her busy enough, she is also a Director of two other companies; Surbiton based, The Community Brain, which aims to give communities a renewed sense of importance and pride, and The Creative Brain, an innovative artist led production company.

Aniela has a passion for large scale celebratory arts which take over buildings, streets and green spaces and inspire passion, chaos and beauty for participants and audiences alike and works as a producer, production manager and stage manager on festivals and celebratory events both nationally and internationally.

We met at the Rose Theatre for our photoshoot and interview. As one of the main venues of the IYAF, what could be a more fitting place?

IYAF is the biggest arts event in Kingston, now in its eighth year, running from the 8th until 17th of July. Where did the idea to stage such a massive festival in Kingston come from?

“It’s intrinsically linked with this building. The dream of making Rose Theatre a home for young people, and a place to celebrate and bring on new talent, was there right at the conception of the idea to build the theatre 30 years ago.

When it opened its doors in 2008 it wasn't looking likely that there would be a youth company or theatre attached to it right away, as its priority had to be to survive commercially, but I’m pleased to add that the Rose has an incredible youth programme now. However, some of the original trustees decided to put on a youth theatre festival. I got a phone call out of the blue because my external moderator on my final piece at drama school, who happened to be a Kingston University lecturer, had heard that the trustees, including Robin Hutchinson, were looking for someone to run the festival and he recommended me. I had never even heard of Kingston before then. I came for a chat with Robin and Colin Bloxham, who was the Principal Arts Officer at the borough at the time, and Frank Whateley, who was Head of Drama at Kingston University. I said that I would love to run the festival but only as an arts festival, not just a theatre festival. I could really see it taking over the whole town and celebrating a lot of different forms of art. I thought I’d be here

a year or two helping to set up the festival but it became my life really and I’m still here, living in Surbiton. We had to make a decision on whether to wait 18 months for the first festival or just go for it and run the first with just six months to get it done. We went for it and it was absolutely wonderful with groups from South Africa and America attending. It was then a seven day festival and it has just grown from there.”

Being part of the artistic team at the festival must be amazing. How much input do you have in deciding what goes on stage during the festival?

“Certainly during the first six years when I was the festival director, the artistic vision was led by me but I very quickly learned that the best thing about the IYAF was listening to young people’s ideas. I started as a young person, being a mere 23 in the first year. It’s exciting working with students from Kingston College and the university, getting them to come up with ideas. Our focus is more in teaching them project management skills and how to make their ideas reality. As long as you are listening to young people’s ideas you will always have the most fresh, exciting and diverse festival as they come up with barmy things but don’t necessarily know how to make these happen and our job is to help.

Even with Andy Currums as the festival director this year, I’m still quite involved, curating and managing three different events.

One is a big music night at the theatre. I haven’t got the weight of having to be involved in everything, like producing the brochure, on my shoulders any more so I can just dip in and do things I really want to do.”

IYAF has a royal president and other celebrity patrons.

How important is their support for the festival?

The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, has been amazing. He’s been on board from year one and that was really important at the start as the gravitas of him and other high profile patrons, such as Sheridan Smith and Tom Holland, really helped to establish the festival and encourage high quality artists to be part of it.

Prince Edward comes to our black tie dinner every year. That is one of the most important events in our fundraising calendar and guests are more likely to attend if there is royalty there. He also attends the gala night which is on July 13th this year. He's great at fighting our corner and persuading sponsors and businesses to back the charity and the young people we work with. Our patrons come to fundraisers as well and they’ve donated auction items and are actively involved, not just lending their name to the festival.

You were only 23 years old when leading the artistic direction for the very first IYAF. What has got you where

you are today and what advice would you give to young wannabe stage and production managers?

“I feel very lucky that I became interested in back-stage early and didn’t want to be an actor. That was the most fortuitous decision I have made as being an actor is so competitive and there isn’t enough work to go round. This led to me going to drama school to study stage management and I very quickly became production and people manager. I really like bringing people together to make things happen.

The drama school I attended, Rose Bruford College, was good at encouraging students to set up their own companies and make things happen, not to wait for the phone to ring for someone to offer you a job.

I set up my own carnival company when I was 18 and ran it until I was 23. We did big outdoor processions, large scale puppetry, festival work and community work linking communities to outdoor celebratory art.

The advice I would give to young people in this industry is not to go into the creative sector thinking that work will simply come to you because of your talent. Believe in yourself and have the confidence to make your idea happen. Learn project management skills so that you know how to manage the business side of things otherwise you won’t survive.”

What do local business leaders make of the

EU REFERENDUM?

nationwide referendum asking whether Britain is to remain in the European Union (EU) or leave will be held on Thursday, 23 June.

The last time we had a referendum was in 1975, when the country decided to remain in what was then the Common Market.

Stay or leave? What are the main points today?

• Immigration - new arrivals will not be able to claim tax credits right away • Child Benefit – migrant workers will still qualify for child benefit. But if they send it to their home country it will be paid at the rate that applies over there • The Prime Minister has promised to keep the Pound and we will never join the Euro • City Financial centres will be protected from Eurozone regulations • Britain is exempt from ‘ever closer union’ with other EU states What do local business groups make of that Leave or Remain?

Louise Punter from Surrey Chamber of Commerce, with 1,500 members ranging from the one man business to giants like BP, says ‘some have strong views, and that often depends on their size, sector and interest in exporting.’

With regard to employment, there are a number of issues to consider including employing workers from overseas in relation to specific job roles and salary levels and legislation that is in favour of employees introduced as a result of the EU, and the effect that has on local job hunters.

Sarah Cornes, a board member of Kingston Chamber of Commerce, told us, much like the other Chambers, that they do not have a view on how to vote, other than to encourage members to engage in lively discussion.

And finally, Sue Reeves from Business Biscotti, a networking organisation that is reaching out beyond London, reports strong feelings expressed about the Government leaflet. Most people see this as a sign of mismanagement as people want to hear a balanced view. “Small businesses say they are not being heard and that the government is so far removed from the people running small businesses. Some members say they are keen to take back control of our borders. Britain is able to stand on its own.”

What do the polls tell us ?

If you take away the ‘Don’t Knows’ from the six most recent polls, the share of the votes for ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’ is even 50:50.

So the final decision may come down to one vote - and that could be yours.

‘The Chamber takes the view that their job is to gather as much data as possible to keep members informed and enable them to make a well informed decision.’

Diana Sterck Chief Executive of Merton Chamber of Commerce says two big issues concerning members relate to international trade and HR. With more and more firms trading online internationally the implications for staying or leaving are in the detail.

F

or the 6th year running, artists all over Kingston will be opening their homes and studios to the public. It’s time to tidy up and put the finishing touches to our work - ready for the two open weekends in June, 11-12 and 18-19.

This year there will be over 70 painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors, ceramicists, textile artists, glass artists, and many others, taking part. Open Studios is a

growing national movement, with towns all over the UK taking part at different points in the year, and is an opportunity for us artists to share what we do with each other - and of course the general public. Working alone in my studio for most of the year, it’s great to spend two relaxing weekends sharing ideas and meeting customers. It is also an opportunity to show a wider range of work than we can in fairs and galleries, where space is limited.

Kingston’s Young Artists KAOS is welcoming fresh talent and has launched a new annual art competition, aimed at finding Kingston’s best up and coming artists. The competition is for 16-19 year olds (mainly art foundation and sixth form students) and is designed, in particular, to encourage those thinking of a career, or pursuing a degree in art or design.

Artists of all ages are known for finding fault with their own work, and we wanted to give a handful of promising young artists the recognition they deserve and the confidence to exhibit alongside established professional artists. Six winners and 12

runners-up will be taking part in Open Studios in June.

Even though we are in our first year, Young KAOS received a wide variety of high quality entries, from photography to sculpture, multimedia to watercolour - you name it! In fact, the work was so varied, judging it was very difficult. However, after much deliberation, the winners were chosen. In first place is AS level art student at Tiffin Girls, Raghvi Arya. In Second Place, Coombe Girls School’s Juliyana Robinson, currently taking her A2 exams. Third place was Sophie Kean, also at Tiffin Girls. Due to the high level of work, it was agreed by

he Open Studios month of June Most of us sell our work and take commissions, and much of it is surprisingly affordable. You can buy a unique work of art - preferably for yourself – from a few pounds for cards and ceramics, to several hundred for original paintings.

Some of us also sell our “seconds” and old work off cheaply.

Many of our artists are very successful, taking part in major exhibitions all over the world, including the prestigious Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy, so as well as something you would love on your wall you may even be buying a future investment!

2016 is our biggest event yet, with 13 different venues opening their doors, including a ‘taster exhibition’ throughout the week of June 11th, held in the upstairs art space at Cass Art, in Kingston town centre.

owel Disease is a tiny charity and was started in 2007 by Raynes Park based, Crohn’s disease sufferer, Gary Douch, from his hospital bed. Since then Bowel Disease UK, which has no staff, has raised over £400,000 to fund direct research into IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and Bowel Cancer at St George's University Hospital led by Professor Kumar. Unlike many charities, every penny raised by donors and supporters goes directly into funding research

Professor Devinder Kumar is a leading bowel disease surgeon and consultant. A trustee of the charity Bowel Disease UK, he lives in Surrey and works at St George’s University of London.

Professor Kumar is also a proficient gardener who first learned about gardening from a neighbour.

Today he has a large garden and his particular interests are his fruit trees, over 300 roses, tree peonies, alstroemeria and the medicinal value of spices.

He grows seasonal vegetables in summer and is keen to learn from other gardens he sees when travelling abroad.

A: The anticipation of meeting someone online or on a phone App is fast and easy. It’s great because you’ve access to a wide choice of available people looking for someone. But the ‘instant’ nature of it can leave you disappointed romantically and emotionally, like a ‘ready made microwave meal’ without the enjoyment of lovingly preparing a meal knowing what went into it. Go slowly. Talk on the phone before you meet.

When you’re ready to meet, listen to what they like. Ask about their plans and dreams and see if it mirrors yours. Spend the time learning about them and share your

dreams and emotions too. Women still want the romance, the mystery and the courting. Make suggestions to go places together; perhaps a picnic in the park or lunch by the river? The romance will follow.

Q: I’m in love, but my friends disapprove of my new partner. How do I continue to cope with their disapproval?

Should I follow my friends’ advice? I want to be with him - where do I start?

A: Ask why they disapprove and explain they’re making you uncomfortable. It’s always good to listen to friends, whatever happens try not to be defensive. Your friends obviously have an opinion because they care.

n 7th February 1964, a classified advertisement appeared on the front page of The Times. It read: "Young people over 18. See Europe in a double-decker bus. July 25 - Aug 16. 6 countries. Student-run. £28 absolute maximum. Probably less.

Tim Lewis, a 22-year-old law student from Twickenham, had got the idea after seeing the Cliff Richard film “Summer Holiday” and bought an old and obsolete bus from London Transport for £375. On 25 July 1964 the bus set off from Twickenham with 23 girls and 17 boys on board – mostly students from all over Britain. It took them on a three week camping holiday across Europe - a round trip of about 2,000 miles.

"Those were the days when, if you met another British vehicle you waved," says Tim. "People in France were astonished to see

a red London double-decker bus meandering through their town or village. That first trip was a huge success and the bus attracted public curiosity and press attention wherever it went.

In Germany it even had a police motorcycle escort to guide it through the main towns.

In 1965 the Double Decker Club (DDC) was set up and over the next six years the bus embarked on several continental holidays to France, Germany, Luxembourg, Denmark, Switzerland and Spain. "The fact that we were in a red London bus added everything to the holidays," says Kevin McCormack.

"We had only to stop to fill up with diesel at a garage, and a French television film crew would appear."

Romances were part of the trips and a number of marriages resulted from them. Tim met his wife on the Basel trip in1965 but doubts that anyone joined with the intention of actively seeking romance. As he put it, “the girls were coming for a cheap holiday - a social time and an opportunity to let their hair down”. The holidays were just immense fun and many of the friendships that were made have lasted half a lifetime”.

The Bus affectionately known as ‘Lulu’ The bus, an RTL 1050, also had one unique feature – all four of The Beatles had autographed the top deck ceiling. Their autographs were lost forever when the bus ceiling was repainted later.

GIRL POWER is changing lives in Iraq

I

raqi Women Association Fund is a non-religious non-sectarian charity. It was founded by British women of Iraqi descent in 1990, after the second Gulf war, in order to help Kurdish families and others, who were displaced by the war. Its main work today is to help the poor, particularly widows and orphans, in Iraq.

Although the main reason for Iraq’s plight, Saddam Hussain, was removed from power in 2003, the situation in Iraq had deteriorated and still not improved much.

How does the IWAF support people?

By providing medical aid, clothing, accommodation in the form of camp tents, heaters and blankets, food, education, tuition for illiterate mothers and children, most of whom are living in desperate poverty.

IWAF has teamed up with other organisations including the christian charity The United Way, the Red Cross and a British scouts group, The Foundation for Aid and Development of the Iraqi Child, Umm Abeeha Charity, to teach basic reading and writing

skills, run sewing courses and fund small projects such as starting a home bakery business. These courses are mostly taught by women to victims of terror acts, bombings, and those displaced on racial and ethnicity grounds.

We also support activities for children such as enrichment lessons for those who are struggling at school, organising children’s play groups during holidays and providing emotional support to orphans and those exposed to terror attacks.

We strongly believe that education is the only way out of poverty. We therefore try to keep the children in school by working with educational charities and supporting sponsorship programmes.

This also helps in reducing child labour.

A member of our charity visited Kafil Al-yateem orphans’ school five years ago and was greatly

saddened to see children fainting during assembly time due to hunger and starvation. Children there may go without food for two days at a time as the school has access only to bare basic necessities. Her visit prompted us to start a school meals programme based on our model here in Kingston, by teaming up with a local organisation. Proudly this has caught up there and other humanitarian groups are now participating in this project as well.

Fundraising for school uniforms, school bags and stationary and lobbying the Iraqi Ministry of Education is ongoing work for us as are bigger projects, such as raising funds for two school buses after we found out that some of the children walk up to five kilometres each way to get to and from school.

CHOCalicious summer smoothie and Raw chocolate ice cream

ooray! Summer’s lazy days are nearly here and what better way to chill and enjoy the weather than with a cool raw chocolate smoothie or some raw chocolate ice cream?

• Super simple to make, this CHOCsmoothie is a great start to your day or as a lunchtime shake. It’s CHOCfull of antioxidant goodness, high in magnesium and raw cacao goodness (I’ve been drinking it regularly and it’s helped curb my appetite and improve my mood!).

Place the banana (and other fruit), millk/water and ice in a blender Blend well and add the tahini (or nut butter) and cacao powder and whizz till smooth Add 1tbsp Sweet Freedom or agave and blend. Taste and add more sweetener for a sweeter taste Pour into glasses and enjoy!

CHOCcreative Tip: Instead of throwing out over-ripe bananas, wrap them in foil and pop them in the freezer, these will then make perfect frozen bananas for this recipe.

Feeding time at the garden

I

f I had a penny for every time I brought up the subject of feeding plants, I’d be very rich indeed. Just as the human body needs the right food for health and vitality, so do your garden lovelies.

In the food world, we have become quite used to reading pack labels to establish ingredients –low fat, salt content, etc.

I’m now advocating that you do the same with plant fertilisers.

First let’s take a brief look at the three major nutrients that are vital to a plant to guarantee it a healthy life. Understanding this will take you a long way to success.

Nitrogen (N) This is the plant’s leaf maker, and is a major component of chlorophyll - the stuff that makes leaves green. Plants that will have the greatest need for nitrogen are those vegetables grown for their leaves and lawn grasses.

If your plant’s lower leaves are turning yellow, but the growing tip remains reasonably green, your plant is calling out for nitrogen. Iron is needed when the upper leaves look mottled green/yellow. However, if your flowering plant is producing lovely leaves, but it isn’t flowering then the chances are you are feeding it too much nitrogen and not enough potassium.

Phosphorus (P) Often described as the plant’s root-maker. It’s a component of DNA and regulates the rate of growth and reproduction of cells at the plant’s growing tip (and this includes the growing roots too) and germination of seeds. In a nutshell, no phosphate, no plant growth!

Potassium (K) Potassium is needed by the plant to set flower buds, which then go on to give the plant sufficient energy for the buds to open to then set fruit and seeds.

If your flowering plant is either not flowering at all, or getting to the point of producing flower buds that fail to open, then the nutrient needed is potassium.

All plant fertilisers must declare their nutrient content on the label.

It’s expressed as a ratio, giving the values in a block of three numbers.

For example, the plant food that I

always recommend for flowering plants – a slow release granule product where one application will last for six months – the NPK ratio looks like 12:7:19. This reading tells me that there is a higher ratio of potassium to nitrogen (with tomato food this will be twice the amount) and therefore perfect for all plants but the grass.

Slow release v liquid Unless you can guarantee that your soil is well hydrated at all times, I would choose granules to scatter around the base of each plant.

South’s bid may look like madness but, on the expected diamond lead, South hopes to make a diamond and seven club tricks. If his partner has nothing, he may have swindled the opponents out of game; if North has an ace, 3NT should make.

Deciding that diamonds were covered by South, West led a safe J♥. Declarer rose with A♥ and led 7♦ from dummy. East played low and declarer won with K♦ and then claimed seven club tricks to fulfill his contract.

East was furious with West for not leading a diamond, but East should examine his own defence. South must have a long club suit and a diamond stop. Anyone for a GAME OF STONES? and the elf knew the right logarithms, codes and levers to make it actually work on a phone. All I had to do was lay the trail and work out the talismans.

Easier said than done. Day after day working out the best route to weave around the town and the right bars to take part.

Then I hit on the insane idea of making every clue rhyme. Once started, eight clues later it was too late to stop. Twenty-five in all! It would have been quicker to build The Wall. Sorry, those of you who have avoided the addiction to Game Of Thrones, it’s a 700 ft high wall of ice, 300 miles long.

I

have a dark confession to make. When I was a teenager I played Dungeons & Dragons with the avatar of Damocles - Warrior Queen. Not surprising, therefore, that the TV series Game Of Thrones appeals to the myth and magic in my soul.

Apparently, judging by the massive success of the sixth series, I might not be alone in this.

Spurred on by dragons, kings and Daenery’s blonde locks, a thought hit me last spring. How about creating an ancient, mysterious treasure hunt in modern day Kingston? More than anything, how could I resist the pun ‘Game of Stones’ - as in Kingston. But how to do it? I knew it was possible these days to use a mobile instead of a sheet of paper for clues. Alas, my technical know-how was limited to adjusting the temperature on my hair tongs. Asking the Universe to help out on this, mystery started to swirl, because literally the next night, I found myself in a café sitting next to Michael, a technical, geeky guy. I told him my idea,
