uder Journey is an intuitive college and career planning tools that empowers service members to develope a successful education and career pathway, whether it’s taking a military career to the next level, planning for separation and/or retirement, or switching career fields. VolEd counseling professionals have a unique opportunity to show military members how the Kuder Journey Program can affect those potential life experiences through formal education, professional development, and career enhancement. With that in

mind, every counseling session is a chance to encourage solid decision making surrounding those areas that will have a long-lasting impact on the personal and professional lives of service members. Kuder Journey is a free, easily-accessible tool that can be used to aid in the decision making process. A service member can walk away from your office with a fully detailed career assessment and education plan.

Additionally, members are granted access to a wealth of guidance resources designed to inspire further conversation and self-exploration. http://www.dantes.doded.mil

Kuder Journey - College and Career Planning

Through the College & Career Planning program, service members can: • • • • •

Take interests, skills, and work values assessments Explore recommended occupations, job outlooks, salaries, and education requirements Find education programs and apprenticeships Learn about financial aid options Prepare for transition with job search tools, develop job networks, and find professional associations Search for jobs, research employers, and find job fairs Obtain lifetime access to an e-portfolio to organize documents for employment, school admission, or scholarships

DANTES and Kuder® Journey have established training accounts for counselors (education, family support, career, transition, etc.) to assist active duty, Guard, and Reserve members with their education, career, and transition goals. Counselors can also create administrator accounts that provide access to Kuder University ™. This is a free online resource library for administrators to access information about a variety of system tools and features relating to the Kuder® Journey program.

Included within the site are instructional videos and tutorials on how to utilize various system components, manage your account, and take advantage of the Kuder Administrative Database Management System. Counselors also gain access to the same customized Kuder ® Journey program as service members.

Access to this training account will help counselors become familiar with the program in preparation for counseling sessions, education briefs, and transition classes. As a site administrator, counselors will be able to obtain: • • • •

Hot News DoD VolEd Professional Development Institute (PDI)

The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Professional Development Institute (VolEd PDI) is an annual two-day event designed to equip VolEd professionals with ongoing training and development opportunities. Participants include DoD and U.S. Coast Guard VolEd professionals nominated by their Services’ VolEd Chiefs.

Participants are challenged to translate new education program management, counseling, and advisement knowledge and skills into actionable practices. The PDI also provides an opportunity to collaborate and build support networks with other professionals within the voluntary education community. Participation in the PDI is coordinated by your Service point of contact.

Troops to Teachers: Meet our State Grant Offices

T

roops to Teachers is a DANTES-managed, DoD-transition program to help service members and veterans begin new careers as K-12 school teachers in public, charter, and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools. The program provides eligible members with counseling, employment assistance, and financial support to help members meet education and licensing requirements to secure a teaching position. Since 1993, more than 21,000 veterans have successfully transitioned to a career in education.

Troops to Teachers (TTT) has 31 states offering local assistance to program participants via grants received in 2018. The 2018 grants provide services for a 5-year term ending in May 2023.

The main benefit of the TTT state grants is that local state education departments and agencies are able to assist military members, veterans and TTT participants with local counseling and guidance. Troops to Teachers: Meet our State Grant Offices Troops to Teachers Michigan with MVAA to develop training for academic administrators, staff and faculty to support increased understanding of student veterans for institutions of higher learning. Training is designed to introduce a variety of topics relative to student veterans and their unique transitional needs while enrolled in postsecondary educational programs. Training sessions are delivered in webinar and live presentation formats. Topics include: • • • Edwardeen Jones (Eddy), CAPT, USN, (Ret.), Michigan TTT State Manager Eddy has served as Michigan’s TTT State Manager since 2010. She served as a public school, special education teacher and she served 30 years as a senior naval intelligence officer in the Naval Reserve.

This experience has been invaluable in promoting the TTT program and working for the Michigan Department of Education.

TTT Program Information Career Assistance for Veterans from Classroom to Employment Understanding the Needs of Veterans for Educators and Academic Staff

Michigan Works (MI Works) Agency Education Briefing- TTT provides monthly education briefs to MI Works Veterans Job Placement Officers and military job seekers throughout the state.

Yellow Ribbon and Military Retirement Seminars - TTT provides the essential resources to military personnel for a successful re-integration post-deployment or preparing for retirement.

Michigan Teacher Leadership Advisory Council (MTLAC) Briefings - TTT provides recruiting information via virtual meetings and face-to-face to this group of educational stakeholders from across the state. This networking opportunity allows the TTT Manager to address the institutional and social barriers that confront veterans entering the teaching profession and assist local schools and districts to design and facilitate a smooth transition and support in K-12 classrooms for the TTT participants.

Ingham County Veterans Commission - The TTT Manager has been appointed to the Ingham County Veterans Commission. This commission addresses educational needs of Michigan’s military members and directly networks with Michigan Department of Education and its stakeholders.

Troops to Teachers: Meet our State Grant Offices State Incentives for Military: Fee Waiver- The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has eliminated fees for educator licenses to recognize the contributions of military veterans. For certification questions or other information regarding the processing of your military certification fee reimbursement, please contact the Michigan Department of Education Customer Services Center at MDE-EducatorHelp@michigan.gov Certification Extension- A member of the Armed Forces or National Guard who is called to active duty, and who, at the time of deployment, holds a valid educator license in Michigan is entitled to have the license extended for a period of time commensurate with the length of active duty service.

State Continuing Education Clock hours (SCHECH) are earned by educators who attend professional development activities approved by the Michigan Department of Education. These hours may be used towards renewal of certificates and licenses issued by the MDE, Office of Educator Excellence (OEE).

Military veterans may use active-duty-related training only if prior authorization is given by OEE.

Michigan is home to 12 federally-recognized Native American tribes. The Bureau of Indian Affairs Education oversees two K-12 schools in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. These schools seek to employ teachers to teach Native American tribal language and culture.
