DoD VolEd Professional Development Institute (PDI) The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Professional Development Institute (VolEd PDI) is an annual two-day event designed to equip VolEd professionals with ongoing training and development opportunities. Participants include DoD and U.S. Coast Guard VolEd professionals nominated by their Services’ VolEd Chiefs. Participants are challenged to translate new education program management, counseling, and advisement knowledge and skills into actionable practices. The PDI also provides an opportunity to collaborate and build support networks with other professionals within the voluntary education community. Participation in the PDI is coordinated by your Service point of contact.

Troops to Teachers is a DANTES-managed, DoD-transition program to help service members and veterans begin new careers as K-12 school teachers in public, charter, and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools. The program provides eligible members with counseling, employment assistance, and financial support to help members meet education and licensing requirements to secure a teaching position. This month, we are proud to introduce the Florida, Alabama, and Michigan teams!
Troops to Teachers (TTT) has 31 states offering local assistance to program participants via grants received in 2018. The 2018 grants provide services for a 5-year term ending in May 2023.
The main benefit of the TTT state grants is that local state education departments and agencies are able to assist military members, veterans and TTT participants with local counseling and guidance. These local offices become the frontline for certification and hiring information, resources, and technical assistance on meeting teacher require

Florida has certification programs, which military personnel can complete while on active duty.

Edwardeen Jones (Eddy), CAPT, USN, (Ret.), Michigan TTT State Manager Eddy has served as Michigan’s TTT State Manager since 2010. She served as a public school, special education teacher and she served 30 years as a senior naval intelligence officer in the Naval Reserve. This experience has been invaluable in promoting the TTT program and working for the Michigan Department of Education. Yellow Ribbon and Military Retirement Seminars - TTT provides the essential resources to military personnel for a successful re-integration post-deployment or preparing for retirement. Michigan Teacher Leadership Advisory Council (MTLAC) Briefings - TTT provides recruiting information via virtual meetings and face-to-face to this group of educational stakeholders from across the state. This networking opportunity allows the TTT Manager to address the institutional and social barriers that confront veterans entering the teaching profession and assist local schools and districts to design and facilitate a smooth transition and support in K-12 classrooms for the TTT participants. Ingham County Veterans Commission - The TTT Manager has been appointed to the Ingham County Veterans Commission.
