Estamos diante de uma pintura que não faz uso dos artifícios superficiais tão presentes em certa pintura atual, que é, por assim dizer, uma pintura que deixa de lado e se retira da Pintura. Mantém a tela, o chassi, a superfície, mas essa superfície é apenas uma “tela”, talvez um “monitor” como tantos outros, em que, como tal, as “figuras” vão e vêm, sem ficar lá, sem permanecer e sem se entranhar, e dali já vão para outro lugar, deslizando de superfície em superfície. Se há um efeito aqui, um “artifício”, é o de investir a ainda possível sabedoria total da pintura numa “fala” contemporânea, atual.

Ela se projeta para fora, impondo certa magnificência, suntuosidade até, mas está presa ali, fincada ali, não há como tirá-la dali, daquele lugar, de dentro da tela. Aquele é o seu lugar irremovível que assume como se este fosse o lugar mais alto, nobre, solene. Por si só a magnificência e suntuosidade que ela possui seriam artificiais, ridículas até, anacrônicas. Por isso elas precisam se transmutar em dejetos, escombros, trastes improváveis e virtuosos; em um monstro primoroso e atraente. Está ali uma figura por uma determinação de ser pintura e por uma insistência em pintá-la, uma necessária teimosia. É uma pintura de impacto demorado, lenta, nos puxa e nos arrasta para ela, grudenta, viscosa, sem nos soltar. Quer nos agarrar; essa é provavelmente a razão dos seus longos “tentáculos”, largas pinceladas tortuosas, um escorrer suave e contínuo, de uma preciosidade pouco vista nos dias de hoje, como laços lançados da tela para enlaçar o espectador. Preciosidade que não remete a nada, sem nostalgia ou desfaçatez, mas simplesmente pela pintura ainda poder ser e realizar. Só isso, sem querer resgatar nada ou tudo, mas querendo. Ser um fato do fazer ainda possível, e pronto.

Vejo nessa trajetória de trinta anos ou mais desta pintura um longo e contínuo embate com a grade — a famosa estrutura neoplástica —; o cansaço e esgotamento da grade. E ainda ela resistindo ao sopro da pós-modernidade, como uma bandeira ao vento que se deforma, mas ainda é e será um retângulo. Pois no início era a grade. Nada senão a grade e sua teimosia. E foi assim durante longo tempo. Uma grade que avançava na superfície e silenciava dentro da superfície. Escondia-se nas trevas, no mais escuro, e desaparecia na pureza do branco. Sem nunca desaparecer. Era uma silenciosa e meticulosa disputa com a grade.

Repetida e repetida inúmeras vezes, teimosamente repetida, como uma obsessão.

Hoje, estamos falando possivelmente de uma grade/grafite. Um grafite sem a fluida leveza do spray, mas com a tinta cansada e exausta da tradição ainda a tentar fixar seu último brilho, envolvendo-se com o mesmo gesto do braço que desenha tanto na parede quanto na tela. Um com a urgência do ato rápido, outro com o peso da tinta. Lento, um grafite com a densidade total da pintura. Com toda ela ali colocando seu virtuosismo nas reviravoltas, nas cambalhotas e tombos que não podem ser previstos, tal um somatório negativo; o mais é menos, o menos é mais.

Montagem, aglomerado de rejeitos pictóricos, do qual não se sabe o que, ao final, foi acrescentado e o que não foi retirado, e não importa: o emaranhado pictórico venceu. Incansavelmente essa figura tentacular se desdobra em outras, uma perseguição sem começo nem fim, como uma imensa planta que prolifera e atrai para si todas as forças. Tentáculos substituem tentáculos como rabos de lagartixas vivos. É uma pintura que excita e cansa. Cansa e excita.

Repetitiva até o esgotamento sem fim. Tumultuosa, turbulenta, inteiramente fixada na matéria, no corpo mesmo da tinta. Quer ir para fora, quer se exteriorizar, sair da tela, e irremediavelmente presa à tela.

Projetar-se; impositiva e aberta como o grafite e presa à tinta, à tela, ao chassi como poucas. A matéria pictórica quer sugar, absorver o olhar numa mirada duradoura.

Vejo aqui também “o burro quando foge” das cores do cubismo analítico revisitado e iluminado, pois é como se a essas cores fosse dada luz e, ao mesmo tempo, examinadas por uma lupa. E retalhada, esquartejada em pedaços justapostos — uma pintura colagem, ou melhor, pintura falso tromp l’oeil da colagem. Ali um pôr do sol abrasivo de verão que se esvai no horizonte. Abaixo um muro centenário descascado e brilhante. A superfície lisa e os furinhos do mármore travertino. Os cabelos sinuosos, oleosos, de uma mulher de Courbet. Um salto carpado do Bob Esponja. Passagens pictóricas de uma desarticulação perfeitamente ajustada. Mas é preciso, tal como um cientista com seus aparelhos, demoradamente distinguir esses espécimes tão disfarçados nessa pintura pesada de tinta pesada, necessariamente pesada.

Curiosa é a origem digital dessas imagens, que, processadas e reprocessadas em inúmeras folhas de

papel despejadas da impressora, servem de “esboços” ou “estudos” ao fazer e refazer sem parar, experimentar as suas possibilidades, a sua ainda e ansiosa incompletude anterior à tela. E ainda assim há que colocar um ponto-final; com o pincel, a tinta, a tela.

Assim o pincel percorre a tela toda em gestos largos, fluidos, expansivos, densos, e se percebe, se sente o prazer desse gesto, como que enaltecendo a nobreza, a grandiosidade eloquente desejada pela pintura.

Por outro lado, a irritação do scratch, o centro da tela bloqueado pelos retângulos de tinta arrastados, como um corretivo insistente, infrutífero, inoperante, dizendo um “não”. De modo que já está lá, na tela, o gesto antecipado do apagar tudo para começar de novo; o aviso-prévio e intimidador de que tudo pode dar errado. É sob essa pressão que a pintura se faz; dentro dela já está o indício do tudo ou nada.

A estrutura do quadro pouco varia, cores e formas se repetem. É o mesmo quadro? Versões? De onde surgiu essa “figura” tão obsessiva de tão repetitiva? O que quer provar? Atingir a improvável e última melhor versão de todas. Mas qual?

A “figura” se repete obsessivamente, aflora e agiganta-se em atitude combativa. O que fazer senão reativar o velho ringue do ateliê, o exercício paciente dos golpes e esquivas do pincel? Insistente, como uma dessas canções que grudam na mente e não saem, ela retorna sem nos darmos conta, tal um chiclete mastigado se estende e se contrai e depois é cuspido. Objeto ou dejeto; indefinível. Percebemos a impaciência como exercício ou estudos da exasperação, longas pinceladas arrastam a tinta por longos caminhos que seguimos um tanto atônitos; para onde? Virtuosamente desvirtuadas, calculadamente desengonçadas, irônicas, muito irônicas. Então rir? Depois de tanto segui-las por vaivéns opostos, contraditórios, inconclusivos, chega o topar com o bloqueio frontal ao movimento das sinuosas pinceladas, uma quase colagem fixada na tela, massa de tinta amassada, esmagada, arrastada, entre fluidez e paralisia.

Esta pintura tão assumidamente nítida e langorosa, calculada e desencontrada, irônica e portentosa, é o resultado da longa e difícil gestação de uma “grade”, filha daquela mãe Grade, que se aventurou pelos desventurados caminhos da atualidade e voltou-se, convicta, para si, para a tela, a tinta, o pincel.

A superfície dura, cortante, demonstra inequivocamente uma impenetrabilidade. Impede o avanço além. É um sinal de stop. Por isso, a tela precisa avançar em bloco na direção ao espectador, como se a sua identificação com a parede tivesse também que ser bloqueada. Entretanto, essa desidentificação física não consegue obliterar uma identidade mais fundamental. Compartilham, tela e parede, da cegueira da matéria. Mas da dureza da parede ainda obtemos sinais familiares, algum abrigo. Talvez isso explique certas pinturas atuais que, através de determinadas técnicas de textura, procuram mimetizar a aparência de paredes envelhecidas pelo tempo, descascadas e corroídas, emprestando a elas uma vivência desalentada e lançando um estímulo que só uma disponibilidade de memória pode recompor e abrigar. Inversamente, as telas de Paulo Laport partem de algo próximo da superfície vítrea de um monitor de TV morto.

A tela desligada de um monitor é o que hoje pode existir de mais opaco. Destituída do conforto da imagem e da luz, a tela apagada é o que pode existir hoje de mais inútil. Até mesmo a sua cor afasta. Uma cor sem cor, que expulsa todas as cores. Então, só uma pintura que age através de uma cor que “desliga” as sugestões cromáticas e mergulha na dureza da matéria parece possível demonstrar a opacidade do mundo que é preciso transpor. Para ultrapassar essa superfície-reflexo para onde convergem todas as imagens, todos os sentidos, e encontrar o reflexo que procura “escorregar” da superfície. Escapar ao bloqueamento que aprisiona, deslizando. Como quem, sobre a parede, colocasse ladrilhos.

Como se a tinta endurecesse como cerâmica num mosaico monolítico, mistura indestrutível e fugidia da superfície vítrea, para dar as costas à agitação incessante das coisas que nos rodeiam. “Desligar” o mundo e as imagens que dele nos circundam para retomá-lo, lentamente.

Então, para recomeçar um contato com as coisas, talvez seja necessário concentrar a atenção em indagações ancestrais e reelaborá-las através do sofisticado arsenal moderno da pintura — esse processo metafórico deve encontrar um homólogo da experiência no próprio meio da pintura. É através de uma temporalidade ancestral, num movimento dos mais vagarosos possíveis, o da capilaridade que faz a tinta a óleo recuar para sulcos mínimos, que esta pintura se organiza. A lentidão desse agir parece indicar que estamos num dos substratos mais fundamentais da realidade. Aqui, a pintura ainda “fala” de um fenômeno, ou melhor,

ela se propõe como um modelo sensível e expressivamente organizado da manifestação da natureza.

Imaginemos um piso de ladrilhos molhado; a água correndo em direção aos sulcos e ali restando até a total evaporação. Este é um processo de tempo rápido, que a pintura reconstitui num tempo lento, fundamental. Por isso também exige um retardamento da nossa atenção, uma demora num tempo mais “concreto”, mais afastado das imagens e mais perto das coisas.

A pintura continua a ser, afinal, uma “química” — mistura de pigmentos, óleos, solventes — tal como era a serviço da ilusão bidimensional, só que agora “ilude” outros processos. Será, então, que essas pinturas estariam se referindo a estruturas não observáveis, abaixo do plano da realidade percebida? As árvores que Mondrian pintou, os galhos e folhas que se cruzam vão, progressivamente, manifestar a organização da natureza que o pintor acelera e racionaliza. Mas árvores são elementos da natureza que pode ser

observados e abstraídos. As pinturas de Paulo Laport sugerem uma atitude inversa: como se aproximar concretamente de fenômenos inteligíveis apenas abstratamente. A grade abstrata é retomada e impregnada por um labor arcaico, mais próximo do pedreiro que do pintor, mais afastado da imagem que da matéria. Trabalho da espátula, e não do pincel. Arquitetônico até. Sólido. De uma solidez demorada, visivelmente demorada. De uma concretude saturada. Ao afirmar a grade como uma existência que se realiza na própria tela, estas pinturas solicitam uma atenção que é própria da presença do acontecer e não da sua representação. Exigem uma atenção concreta, prolongada, concentrada, para acompanhar o movimento que é o de retardar e não de acelerar, e para que o olho possa também se impregnar da capilaridade do óleo. E tudo absorver.

Nos tempos atuais, saturados de imagens, é preciso bloquear o quinto lado.

Um dos maiores problemas a se enfrentar quando se discute a condição da pintura hoje consiste em deslocar-se de uma análise generalizante para um olhar objetivo. Objetivo, aqui no sentido literal mesmo da palavra. Ou seja, falar da pintura em seu sentido material não se restringe a abordagem fincada na ainda necessária problematização da fronteira entre modernidade e pós-modernidade, cuja pedra de toque teria sido via de regra a desconfiança do caráter metalinguístico marcante da produção do século XX: quando lançamos mão dessa “objetividade material” da pintura hoje enfatizamos algo elementar, mas mesmo assim importante de ser dito — sua condição só pode ser aferida no encontro direto com um repertório de obras e a indagação da experiência que elas nos suscitam. Dito em resumo, que a Pintura felizmente ainda depende de pinturas para menos se aficcionar na busca transcendental de sua definição do que ampliar seu repertório de investidas.

Este preâmbulo se mostra oportuno para compreender as bases dos trabalhos de Paulo Laport. A impressão inicial, por si mesmo instigante, é a do quanto suas pinturas pareceriam modernas na sua abordagem metódica dos seus termos físicos constituintes, inclusive quando eles propositalmente se colocam no limite. Para considerarmos um exemplo: qual a fronteira a separar objetividade e subjetividade quando lidamos com a noção de escala? Esta, aliás, é decisiva, na medida em que ela se implanta ali em três eixos — a verticalidade da tela, a espessuras de seu chassi e de suas camadas de tinta, criando um espesso muro de pintura e a necessidade de respiro quando os trabalhos se ajustam ao espaço arquitetônico. Contudo, para voltarmos ao problema, o fato é que estas pinturas, ainda que se valham de um repertório moderno, são enfaticamente contemporâneas. Talvez esta seja uma questão menor aqui, considerando a relativa indiferença, ou quem sabe, discrição, em ater-se à classificação desta ordem. No entanto, esta fronteira instável se mostra atuante na sua capacidade de esgarçar cada um dos componentes do campo pictórico, fazendo mais uma vez com que as categorias gerais que estruturavam uma prática auto referencial de certa pintura moderna aqui sejam expostas ao seu teste ordinário.

Tomemos novamente a projeção do chassi e o prolongamento do plano de pintura para as laterais: simultaneamente eles emulam e quebram tanto com a organização centrípeta dos elementos do quadro quanto com a frontalidade que outrora fundamentara a famigerada (e hoje

caída em desgraça) planaridade. Este plano frontal, porém, não é resolvido meramente graças a um deslocamento rumo às laterais: ele também é friccionado contra si mesmo — as seguidas investidas das camadas tornam o suporte quase um chão sobre o qual a tinta se finca. Seria lícito mesmo descrever tecnicamente estas obras como “pintura sobre pintura” (assim como corriqueiramente falamos em óleo sobre tela, óleo sobre papel etc.), até em função dos outros significados ali implícitos — a pintura que fala e se faz sobre a sua história. Ironicamente esta arrisca ser a única quase-metáfora (e acrescento “quase” para deixar claro que operar sobre a história não é algo nem incorpóreo nem alheio ao mundo concreto) em jogo.

A particularidade a ser notada a da pintura enfatizar-se como substantivo. No fundo isto assinala sua diferença comparada à pintura moderna que, se recusou as alegorias, ainda recorreu sub-repticiamente a adjetivos: ela precisava ser abstrata, expressiva, expressionista, concreta, lírica, essencialista, o que mais se quisesse. Ela acabava por recorrer a veículos outros para paradoxalmente demonstrar sua autonomia. Nos trabalhos de Paulo tudo passa a ser contido justamente para “calibrar” a presença da pintura: o percurso do pincel e da tinta a tela não se permite ser chamado de gestual nem austero: ele não é neutro, mas é antiexpressivo. A trama ali estabelecida não é projetada (desenhada), mas chamá-la de espontânea é cometer a incúria de nela buscar fora da geometria uma emotividade inconveniente.

Esta mesma trama reforça, aliás, o autodesdobramento da relação entre a pintura e o espaço que simultaneamente ela ocupa e funda. Reportando-se livremente a Newman (o zip) e Mondrian (mais do que a grade, o alinhamento das pinceladas com a trama ortogonal da tela) ela media a disposição de um plano sobre outro, citando na pintura o seu suporte. Afinal, este embate se faz presente a todo momento ali — considerando que não são pinturas concluídas, imediatamente, mas sim pelas idas e vindas dos veios pictóricos, cuja viscosidade ou secura cria avanços e recuos de coloração, luminosidade e articulação dento do quadro. Esta pintura de um plano só na verdade conquista esta condição após árduas e quase intermináveis sessões nas quais sempre se convive com a ameaça de uma distração

pôr tudo a perder. Esta demora da pintura, que nisto é antagônica à velocidade do mundo atual, solicita uma percepção que não chamaria de introspectiva (o que a faria soar romântica), mas de imersiva (i.e. que requer atenção acurada sob a exposição prolongada). E sua luminescência cinzenta faz-se por conta de tudo isso o eixo destes trabalhos.

O acinzentado está para a pintura de Paulo como o azulado para Cézanne. Isto se dá em função do modo como a cor quebra seu enclausuramento (pois mesmo quando abolida a cor local no impressionismo, ela ainda se espraiava homogeneamente e até certo ponto segmentada) criando no quadro uma “atmosfera” em que uma determinada coloração percorre todas as partes, permitindo inclusive uma redistribuição de peso e hierarquia entre as partes e entre figura e fundo. Falar aqui de acinzentado, porém, é quase apelar para um vocabulário convencional apenas para introduzir o olhar ao campo a ser perscrutado. Pois em cada ponto há vibrações das inúmeras outras cores a atravessarem os estratos de pintura a ponto de indagarmos se existiria cor nestas pinturas. Para examinarmos mais detidamente este problema convocaríamos Pollock, Seurat, Matisse e Albers (e de novo Newman) para esse diálogo. Pollock por ele de certo modo reconfigurar e atualizar a oposição cor x coloração tanto de Cézanne quanto do cubismo analítico (afora avalizar a possibilidade da pintura sem projeto, que se resolve em seu próprio processo constitutivo); Seurat pela cor obtida via fragmentação. E, finalmente, a trinca Matisse, Albers, Newman por conta desta nova qualidade assumida pela cor na arte do século XX. Pois nos três, mais do que a cor ganhar autonomia, ela rompe o esquema tonal (em Matisse com a admissão do preto como cor, já indicada anteriormente por Coubert e Franz Hals, por exemplo) e com Newman na dimensão corpórea por ela conquistada. É óbvio que citar três ícones da pintura aqui pode soar pretencioso, ou, no mínimo, desconcertante, contudo é justamente este peso quase imobilizador de um passado eloquente que compele a persistência do trabalho artístico, que precisa superar o respeito zeloso e criar frente a ele suas estratégias de conservação, renúncia, desvio ou invenção.

Para colocarmos isso concretamente em relação às pinturas de Paulo, parece essencial compreender o

valor deste acinzentado não só como fiel na antítese cor x coloração quanto na hipótese mesma de instaurar o cinza como cor, quem sabe sem excluir dele sua sobrevida como tom. Dito de outro modo, o cinza / acinzentado aqui seria a saída, o ultimato decisivo para o enigma de como falar de pintura sem expurgar a cor, mas de não deixar que a sua sensualidade desviasse a atenção para tudo mais que também é pintura. A suposta neutralidade do cinza (e seu valor tonal sempre foi explorado nesta direção) era de produzir as intermediações graduais entre os elementos da pintura, harmonizando assim as partes em relação ao todo. Com isso, ele de certa maneira “temperava” o grau de profundidade e de projeção da pintura em relação ao espaço interno da tela e aquele outro que deveria (ou simularia) saltar dela; em linhas gerais isto era sugerido na estrutura de “relevo” da pintura renascentista, por exemplo. A questão de ajuste estruturada a partir do cinza era dele conciliar assim a corporeidade enfática do branco com os recuos em profundidade sugeridos pelo preto, criando assim os planos intermediários. No caso do acinzentado de Paulo, podemos considerar que esta cor-tom — que apropriadamente complementa a quebra com dualidades clássicas cor x tom e cor x desenho, pois que as amalgama simultaneamente (basta ver que suas pinturas, mais uma vez a exemplo de Pollock, não tem desenho), e, se considerarmos novamente a proposta de uma pintura cujo suporte é ela própria, vemos que este acinzentado coloca quase literalmente (inclusive na sua constituição corpórea) este ajuste de planos e luminosidade que controla todo o quadro. Ele não descreve uma trama, ela se faz no seu interior. Ademais, ainda observando seu aspecto corpóreo a um só tempo — repitamos — literal e autônomo (pois que em certos momentos toma o suporte quase como uma circunstância que, se à primeira vista, depende do rasante de luz exterior à tela, guarda igualmente a irrupção de uma luminosidade interna, que de fato vem de dentro e de trás do plano pictórico mais próximo de saltar.

Tentado explicar isso em outras palavras, há uma familiaridade com o tratamento dado por Albers à cor, cuja última camada, aquela mais visível, tinha sua irisdiscência resultante das inúmeras outras investidas anteriores que muitas vezes fechavam,

bloqueavam, ou ao menos regulavam o coeficiente de luz vazada pela tela (algo perceptível nos estudos do artista alemão). Conferir este novo estatuto ao cinza tem ainda outro significado, se o pensarmos como uma equação, o enigma de uma cor que se especializa sem recorrer à sensualidade latente.

O cinza é o tom neutro por excelência. Daí ele aparecer nestas pinturas como uma cor não emotiva, cor-não-cor, cuja usual “inexpressividade” acaba tomada ora com indiferença, ora servindo como ponto de apoio e “descanso” de outras zonas intensas. Ela apenas parece expulsar a cor da pintura, como se retirasse desta última o que ela ainda guardaria de “acidente”. Porém, esta cor discreta, solidária e aglutinadora das demais partes que juntas fundam a pintura, só funciona exatamente quando se exige a percepção prolongada mencionada acima, insatisfeita com os estereótipos da percepção milagrosa “imediata” ou da afetação falsamente demorada — e um tanto quanto cênica — do pretensioso expert. Há como a solicitação de um tempo que, senão novo, seja outro da parte do espectador. A fundação do cinza como cor poderia assinalar, no que ela tem de mínima e contida, a afluência de uma nova hipótese de pintura. E como hipótese, precisa ser testada e auferida. No próximo trabalho a ser começado, quadro a quadro.

We are facing a painting that doesn’t engage in superficialities so present in a certain present-day painting, that is, so to speak, a painting that puts aside and withdraws from Painting. It still conserves the canvas, the chassis, the surface, but this surface is just a “screen”, maybe a “monitor” like so many others, in which, consequently, “figures” come and go, without remaining there and without entrenching themselves, and then, go someplace else, sliding from surface to surface. If there’s an effect here, an “artifice”, it’s the one of investing the possible wisdom of painting in a contemporary “speech”.

It projects itself outwards, imposing a certain magnificence, sumptuousness even, but is trapped there, stuck there, there’s no way of taking it out of there, from that place, from inside the canvas. That’s it’s irremovable place that takes on as if it where the highest, most noble and solemn place. The magnificence and sumptuousness that it possesses would be artificial, ridiculous even, anachronistic. That’s why they must transmute into unlikely and virtuous waste, debris, worthless objects; in an exquisite and attractive monster. There lies a figure by determination of being a painting and by an insistence in painting it, a necessary stubbornness. It’s a painting whose impact is lengthy, slow, it pulls us and drags us towards the, sticky, viscous, without letting go of us. It wants to grasp us; that’s probably the reason why it’s long “tentacles”, large tortuous brush strokes, a smooth and continuous dripping of a preciosity little seen nowadays, like ties thrown of the canvas to bind the spectator. A preciosity that doesn’t remit to anything, without nostalgia or aplomb, but simply by painting, can still be accomplished.

That’s all, without wanting to recover anything or everything but still wanting to. To be a fact of a still possible making, and that’s it.

I see in this painting a history of thirty years or more so, a long and continuous conflict with the grid. And it still resists the whiff of postmodernity, like the one that distorts itself in the wind, but still is and will be a rectangle. Because in the beginning it was the grid. Nothing but the grid and the artist’s stubbornness. And that’s how it was for a long time. A grid that went forward in the surface and silenced inside the surface. It hid in the darkness, in the darkest place and disappeared in the purity of white. Without ever disappearing. It was a silent and meticulous dispute with the grid. Repeated again and again, stubbornly repeated, like an obsession.

Today, we are possibly talking about a grid/graffiti. A graffiti without the fluid lightness of the spray, but with a paint tired and exhausted from tradition still trying to fixate its last glow, getting involved with the same arm gesture that draws on the wall as much as on the canvas. One with the urgency of the repeated act, the other with the weight of the paint.

A graffiti with the total density of the painting, lingering. With the painting putting its virtuosity in turnarounds, in somersaults and tumbles that can’t be predicted, just like a negative sum; more is less, less is more. Assemblage, cluster of pictorial scraps, and in the end, we don’t know what was added and taken, and it doesn’t matter: the pictorial tangle has won.

Relentlessly, this figure with its tentacles unfolds in others, an endless chase, like a huge plant that thrives and attracts all the forces to itself. Tentacles replace tentacles like lizard tails.

It’s a painting that excites and tires. Tires and excites. Repetitive to endless exhaustion. Tumultuous, turbulent, entirely fixed on the matter, on the body of the paint itself. It wants to get out, exteriorize itself, exit the canvas and is nonetheless irretrievably stuck to the canvas. It projects itself; imposing and open like graffiti and stuck to the paint, to the canvas, to the chassis like few are. The pictorial matter wants to suck, absorb the glance in a lasting gaze.

I also see the undefined tones of the colors of analytic cubism revisited and enlightened, for it’s as if light was given to these colors and, at the same time examined by a magnifying glass. And shredded, butchered in juxtaposed pieces — a collage painting, or even better, a fake trompe l’oeil collage painting.

There lies an abrasive summer sunset that vanishes in the horizon. Below is a centennial peeled and shiny wall. The smooth surface and the little holes of the travertine marble. The sinuous, greasy hair of a Courbet woman. A pike position leap by Sponge Bob. Pictorial passages of a perfectly adjusted disarticulation. But it is needed, just as a scientist with his equipment, slowly distinguish these disguised specimens in this heavy paint painting, necessarily heavy.

The digital origin of these images is curious, they are processed and reprocessed in several sheets of paper unloaded from the printer, they serve as “sketches” or “studies” by continuously doing and redoing, experimenting their possibilities, its anxious

incompleteness before the canvas. And still it is necessary to put a full stop to it; with the brush, the paint, the canvas. Thus, the brush covers the whole canvas in large, fluid, expansive, dense gestures, and the pleasure of this gesture is perceived, felt, just as if praising the nobility, the eloquent greatness desired by the painting. On the other hand, the annoyance of the scratch, the center of the canvas blocked by dragged rectangles of paint, like a persistent, fruitless, inoperative corrective saying “no”. So, the anticipated gesture of erasing everything to start over is already there, on the canvas; the previous and intimidating warning that everything can go wrong. The painting is made under this pressure; it contains the evidences of all or nothing.

The structure of the painting varies very little, colors and forms repeat themselves. Is it the same painting? Are there versions? Where did such an obsessive and repetitive “figure” come from? What does it want to prove? To achieve the unlikely and last better version of all. But which one?

The “figure” repeats itself obsessively, it blooms and grows in a combative attitude. What is there to do if not reactivate the old ring of the studio, the patient exercise of the strokes and wriggles of the brush?

Stubborn, like one of these songs that stick to the mind and won’t leave you, it comes back without us even realizing, like a chewed gum expands and contracts before being spit out. Object or detritus; undefinable. We perceive the impatience as an exercise or exasperation studies, long brush strokes drag the paint through long paths that we follow a bit astonished; where do they go? Virtuously distorted, calculatedly unsteadily, ironic, very ironic. To laugh then?

After following them through opposite to and from motions, contradictory, inconclusive, they even bump into the frontal blockage of the sinuous movement of the brush strokes, almost a collage fixated on the canvas, the mass of paint pressed, crushed, dragged, between fluidity and paralysis.

This so openly distinct and languorous painting, calculated and mismatched, ironic and portentous, is the result of the long and hard gestation of a “grid”, daughter of that mother Grid, that adventured through the wretched paths of present time and has turned back, confident, to itself, to the canvas, to the paint, to the brush.

The sharp, hard surface shows unquestionably that an impenetrability impedes any further approach. It is a stop sign. Therefore, the canvas en bloc must approach the viewer, as though its identification with the wall also had to be blocked. Nevertheless, this physical de-identification does not succeed in obliterating a more fundamental identity.

Canvas and wall share the blindness of matter. But from the hardness of the wall, we still extract familiar signs, some shelter. Perhaps this explains certain paintings of today, which, by means of given techniques of texture, seek to mimic the appearance of peeling, corroded, timeaged walls, endowing them with a weary life experience and launching a stimulus that only a certain predisposition of memory can recompose and harbor. Conversely, Paulo Laport’s canvases start out from something approximating the vitreous surface of a dead TV monitor.

There can be nothing more opaque today than the screen of a monitor turned off. Deprived of the comfort of image and light, the extinguished screen is the most useless thing that can exist today. Even its very color repels. A color without color that expels all colors. Hence, only a painting that acts through a color that “turns off” suggestions of the chromatic and immerses in the hardness of matter seems to make it possible to demonstrate the opaqueness of the world which must be transposed — to go beyond this surface-reflection to the place where all the images, all the senses converge and find the reflection that seeks to “slip” from the surface. To escape, by gliding, from the blockage that imprisons. Like someone covering a wall with tiles. As if the ink hardened like ceramic in a monolithic mosaic, an indestructible and fleeting mixture of the vitreous surface, to flee from the incessant agitation of the things that surround us. To “turn off” the world and the images from it that encircle us to then retake it, slowly.

Thus, to resume contact with things again, it may be necessary to concentrate our attention on ancestral questionings and re-elaborate them through the sophisticated modern arsenal of painting — this metaphorical process should encounter a homologue of the experience in the painting medium itself. It is through an ancestral temporality, in the very slowest movement possible, that of the capillarity which makes oil retreat into the slightest grooves, that the painting organizes itself.

The slowness of this mode of acting seems to indicate that we are in one of the most fundamental substrata of reality. Herein, the painting even

“speaks” of a phenomenon, or, rather, it proposes to be a sensitive and expressively organized model of the manifestation of nature. Let us imagine a wet tiled floor: the water runs, finding its way to the grooves and remaining there until it evaporates completely. This is a process in fast-passing time, which the painting reconstitutes in fundamental, slow-passing time. For this reason, it also requires a slowing up of our span of attention, lingering for a more “concrete” time, farther from the images and closer to the things. After all, painting continues to be a kind of “chemistry” — a mixture of pigments, oils, solvents — just as it was to serve the two-dimensional illusion, except that now it “illudes” other processes. Is it then that these paintings might be referring to non-observable structures underlying the plane of perceived reality? The trees that Mondrian painted, the intersecting branches and leaves, go on progressively to manifest the organization of nature, which the painter accelerates and rationalizes. But trees are elements of nature that can be observed

and abstracted. Paulo Laport’s paintings suggest an opposite attitude: how to concretely approach intelligible phenomena only abstractly.

The abstract grid is retrieved and impregnated with a type of archaic labor close to that of a bricklayer than that of a painter, farther from images than from matter. It is the work of the spatula, not of the paintbrush. It is even architectonic. Solid. Of a long-lasting solidness, visibly long-lasting. It is of a saturated concreteness. In declaring the grid an existence that is effected in the canvas itself, these paintings plead for an attention that is the proper to the presence of the happening and not of its representation. They require concentrated, prolonged, and concrete attention so as to enable us to accompany the movement, which is that of slowing up rather than accelerating, and so that the eye too is able to impregnate itself with the capillarity of the oil — and absorb everything.

In our present times, saturated with images, it is necessary to block the fifth edge… in order to see.

One of the biggest problems we encounter when discussing the current state of painting consists of shifting from a generalizing analysis to an objective viewpoint. Objective, to be read here in the literal sense of the word. Therefore, speaking of painting in its material sense is not restricted to an approach rooted in the still-necessary critical questioning of the boundary between modernity and post-modernity, the touchstone of which, as a rule, has been to challenge the striking metalinguistic character of 20th century production. Rather, when we make use of this “material objectivity” of painting today we emphasize something elementary yet important to say — it’s condition can only be ascertained upon direct contact with an oeuvre and an inquiry into our experience that the works provoke. In a nutshell, Painting fortunately still depends on paintings to be less fixated on the transcendental search for its definition than broadening its repertoire of works.

This foreword is particularly relevant to understanding the foundations of Paulo Laport’s art. Our initial impression, intriguing in itself, is that of how modern his paintings look in his methodical perspective of the constitutive physical terms, even when purposefully placed at their limit. Let us consider one example: what is the boundary that separates objectivity and subjectivity when dealing with the notion of scale? Such notion is actually decisive insofar as it is installed in the work on three axes: the verticality of the canvas, the thickness of its chassis and of its layers of paint, thus creating a thick painting mural and the need to breathe when the works are fitted to the architectonic space. However, returning to the problem, the fact is that these paintings, although passing for a modern oeuvre, are emphatically contemporary. That might be a minor issue here, considering the relative indifference, or perhaps even discretion, in being tied to classifications of such order. Nonetheless, this unstable boundary is active in its capacity to tear up each component of the pictorial field, once again exposing here the general categories that structured an auto-referential practice of certain modern painting to their ordinary test. Consider again the projection of the chassis and the extension of the painted plane to the sides: they simultaneously emulate and break from both the centripetal organization of the painting’s elements and the frontality that erstwhile underlay the famous (and now infamous) planarity.

This frontal plane, however, is not resolved due merely to lateral

displacement; it is also placed in friction against itself — the successive layers turn the support almost into a floor on which the paint is embedded. It would be valid to technically describe these works as “painting on painting” (as we usually talk of oil on canvas, oil on paper etc.), also in virtue of the other implicit meanings; painting that speaks about and is made on its own history. Ironically, this could actually be the only quasi-metaphor (I add quasi to make it clear that operating on history is neither incorporeal nor foreign to the concrete world) at stake.

The singular feature of note is that of painting being emphasized as a noun. In effect, this signals its difference compared to modern painting, which rejected allegories, and surreptitiously resorted to adjectives: it needed to be abstract, expressive, expressionist, concrete, lyrical, essentialist, and whatever else it wanted. It ended up resorting to other vehicles to paradoxically demonstrate its autonomy.

In Paulo’s works everything is contained precisely to “calibrate” the presence of the painting: the trajectory of the brush and of the paint on the canvas cannot be called gestural or austere; it is not neutral, rather it is anti-expressive. The resulting mesh is not designed, but to call it spontaneous would be to commit the negligence of looking for, outside the geometry, an inconvenient emotiveness in it. That same mesh actually reinforces the self-unfolding relationship between the painting and the space that it simultaneously occupies and founds. Speaking freely to Newman (the zip) and Mondrian (not only the grid, but the alignment of the brush strokes with the perpendicular mesh of the canvas), it mediates the arrangement of one plane over another, citing its support in the painting. After all, this clash is felt at every instant here — considering that these paintings are not completed immediately, but rather by the comings and goings of the pictorial strands, whose viscosity or drying creates advances and retreats of colouration, light and articulation within the painting. This painting of a plane only truly achieves this condition after arduous and almost interminable sessions which always involve the threat of any slight distraction putting everything to waste.

This slow painting, in which respect is contradictory to the fast-moving modern world, requests of us a perception that I would not call introspective

(which would make it sound romantic), but rather immersive (i.e., it requires accurate attention under prolonged exposition). And the greyish glow, on account of all this, forms the axis of these works.

The greyish tone is to Paulo’s painting what blue is to Cézanne. This arises from the way in which the colour breaks its enclosure (as even when the local colour was abolished in impressionism, it still spread out in an homogenous and, to a certain extent, segmented manner), creating an “atmosphere” in the painting where a given colouration permeates throughout, even enabling a redistribution of weight and hierarchy among the parts and between the figure and the background. To speak of greyish here, however, is almost to resort to a conventional vocabulary merely to introduce the eye to the field to be investigated. For at every point there are reverberations of countless other colours crossing the strata of the painting, leaving us questioning whether colour really exists in these paintings. To examine this problem in more detail, we can call on Pollock, Seurat, Matisse and Albers (and Newman again) to join this dialogue. Pollock, for he, to a certain extent, reconfigured and updated the colour vs. colouration confrontation both of Cézanne and of analytic cubism (as well as opening the way for painting without design, determined in its own constitutive process); Seurat for colour obtained through fragmentation.

And finally, the trio of Matisse, Albers and Newman, on account of this new quality assumed by colour in 20th century art. In all three, colour not only gains autonomy, but also breaks the tonal scheme (in Matisse with the admission of black as a colour, previously signalled by Courbet and Franz Hals, for example) and with Newman in the corporeal dimension colour attains. Obviously citing three icons of painting may sound pretentious here, or at least disconcerting, however it is precisely this almost immobilizing weight of an eloquent past that compels the persistence of artwork, which must overcome zealous respect and create before it strategies of conservation, renunciation, deviation or invention. To place this in concrete terms in relation to Paulo’s paintings, it seems essential to understand the value of this greyish not only as faithful to the colour vs. colouration antithesis, but also in the very hypothesis of establishing grey as a colour, perhaps without even

excluding its survival as a tone. In other words, the grey/greyish here would be the way out, the decisive ultimatum for the enigma of how to speak of painting without expunging colour, yet not allowing its sensuality to divert the attention to everything else that painting also is. The supposed neutrality of the grey (and its tonal value has always been exploited in this regard) was to produce gradual intermediations between elements of painting, thus creating harmony between the part and the whole. Thus, to a certain extent it “tempered” the degree of depth and projection of the painting in relation to the internal space of the canvas and that other space which should (or should appear to) jump out from it; in general terms this was suggested in the “relief” structure of renaissance painting, for example. The matter of grey-based adjustment was therefore to reconcile the emphatic corporeality of the white with the deep retreats suggested by the black, thus creating intermediary planes. In the case of Paulo’s greyish, this colour-tone suitably complements the break from the classic dualities of colour vs. tone and colour vs. drawing, as it simultaneously fuses them (witness how his paintings, once again like Pollock, have no design) and, if we consider again the proposal of a painting which relies on itself as its support, we can see that this greyish almost literally places (even in its corporeal constitution) this adjustment of planes and luminosities that control the whole piece. It does not describe a mesh, the mesh is made within.

Furthermore, still in relation to its corporeal aspect which, to reiterate, is at once literal and autonomous (as at times it takes on the support almost as a circumstance on which the painting “rests”), it also constitutes a luminosity that, while at first glance depends on external rays of light, it equally stores the eruption of an internal luminosity, which indeed comes from within and from behind the pictorial plane closest to jumping out. Attempting to explain this in other words, there is a familiarity with Albers’ treatment of colour, the final, most visible layer of which shone as a result of the numerous layers below that often closed, blocked, or at least regulated the light coefficient emitted by the canvas (somewhat perceptible in the German artist’s studies). Granting this new statute to grey has yet another meaning. If we think of it as an equation, the enigma of a colour

that is spatialized without resorting to latent sensuality. Grey is the quintessential neutral colour. Hence it appears in these paintings as a non-emotive colour, a colour-non-colour, whose unusual “inexpressiveness” ends up now taken by indifference, now serving as a point of support and “rest” for other intense zones.

It seems to just expel colour from the painting, as if removing what little the painting still holds of “accident”. However, this discreet and solidary colour that joins the other parts that together form the painting, only works precisely when prolonged perception is demanded as mentioned above, dissatisfied by the stereotypes of miraculous “immediate” perception or of falsely mulled over — and somewhat theatrical — affectation of the pretentious expert. There is something of a request for a time that, while not new, is another on behalf of the spectator. The establishment of grey as a colour could signal, in terms of its minimal and contained qualities, the affluence of a new hypothesis for painting. And as an hypothesis, it needs to be tested and ascertained. In the next work to be initiated, painting by painting.

Iniciou seus estudos em arte cursando gravura no Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, entre 1967 e 1968.

Posteriormente, em 1980, estudou na Art Students League of New York e no Pratt Institute.

The artist began his art studies by taking engraving classes at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro between 1967 and 1968. Later on, in 1980, he studied at the Arts Students League of New York and at the Pratt Institute.

Entre suas principais exposições individuais, destacam-se as ocorridas em: Galeria Gravura Brasileira (1981), Galeria Montesanti (1986), Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro (1995) e GB Arte (2000).

Among his main solo exhibitions, stand out shows at: Gravura Brasileira Gallery (1981), Galeria Montesanti (1986), Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro (1995) and GB Arte (2000).
