Det naturlige centrum for Danmarks internationale engagement The natural centre of Denmark’s International engagement

Endvidere uddanner DANILOG værnepligtige, som indkaldes to gange årligt.

About us DANILOG – The Danish International Logistics Centre – is the Danish armed services’ logistics provider. We provide logistical support to Danish units from all the services when these are engaged in international peace-keeping missions. Everything DANILOG does relates to transport, and this requires knowledge, experience, and skills within a wide variety of areas, both civilian and military, particularly in relation to international logistics, health and safety at work legislation, and the handling of hazardous goods. In addition, our staff has to be able to maintain an overview at the same time as ensuring that innumerable details are attended to. In a typical year DANILOG ships about 30,000 m3 of cargo with a total weight of approximately 4,000 tons. An important component of such shipments is mail for the deployed troops. Despite the increasing use of electronic communication tools such as mobile phones, Facebook and other media, sending and receiving letters and parcels still plays a very important role in the lives of Danish soldiers in missions. Providing logistical support for a mission is a complex task. It requires input from a number of different members of staff with a wide range of skills. DANILOG participates at every stage of the process, from initial preparations, shipping and maintenance to delivery and completion. DANILOG employs about 560 members of staff and has contractual agreements with a number of civilian partner organisations, including transport and bus companies. The staff performs the following core duties: transport services, warehousing and supply services, along with training and administration of deployed personnel. Furthermore DANILOG provides training twice yearly for individuals undergoing national service.

DANILOG’s tasks DANILOG is an operational unit, “a logistical brigade” if you will, and reports directly to Army Operational Command Denmark. DANILOG was founded on 1st January 2001 and is based at Vordingborg Barracks. DANILOG’s main tasks are as follows: • To act as point of contact and provide administrative and logistical support to Danish units and individuals engaged in UN, NATO, OSCE and EU peace-keeping missions. • To train and establish DANILOG units, including Army Basic Training and Army Response Units Training, coordinating these activities with the brigades. • To establish, train and deploy National Support Elements – NSE – and other logistical support units to provide assistance in missions. • To provide Host Nation Support when international forces conduct exercises in Denmark. DANILOG personnel is responsible for the planning, preparation and control of all Danish and international transports. 24 hours a day DANILOG functions as the point of contact providing administrative and logistical support to all deployed units and individuals whatever type of mission. This also means that all DANILOG personnel can be deployed abroad when the need arises. In addition to the above-mentioned tasks, DANILOG is also responsible for providing courses for individuals and key personnel destined for deployment to international operations. These courses are prepared and held by the Training Centre staff.

Forsyning er m책let Transport er midlet The objective is supply The means is transportation

Insignia The Danish International Logistics Centre’s new heraldic insignia was developed specifically for the unit, in keeping with the traditions of the Danish military. It consists of a silver six-spoked wheel, symbolising the six logistical services (supply, construction, personnel, medical services, transport and maintenance). The unbroken cord joining the six spokes symbolises cooperation between the six logistical services. The wheel is framed by two laurel branches in front of a downward-facing sword with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s monogram on the shank button. The laurel branches symbolise victory. The downward-facing sword is a defensive symbol which can be activated in times of danger.

Supply depot – NSDK The National Support Unit Denmark (National Støtteenhed Danmark or NSDK for short) is the DANILOG unit that provides depot facilities and supply services to units garrisoned at Vordingborg Barracks and in particular to the deployed soldiers. Acting as the supply depot entails NSDK securing, storing and delivering articles requisitioned by local units, as well as issuing and collecting clothing from DANILOG’s permanent staff and national service personnel. NSDK most significant role is in the securing and supplying of goods and materials and the national resupplying of all deployed forces. In addition NSDK provides field post services to deployed units as well as performing a number of administrative tasks related to the materials they handle. NSDK processes an average of 6,000 requisitions per year and these are packed and forwarded from the new terminal building at Vordingborg Barracks. In addition, NSDK takes delivery of repairable components which are then sent on to the relevant workshop.

The development of specific skills is of great importance to DANILOG DANILOG personnel posses a large number of different skills obtained through a number of courses, many of which are the basis for other civilian educations such as clerical and HR consultant, financial and IT. At DANILOG we know that engaging and cooperating with the civilian entity is the key to success.

Årligt indkøber NSDK varer for ca. 25 mio. kr.

Service and field post are key areas Goods are typically dispatched using DANILOG’s own vehicles to Karup, from where the goods are sent by plane to the mission in question. On occasion goods are also sent to a Danish harbour to be transported by sea to the mission area. NSDK carry in stock the vast majority of the over 50,000 items they ship. Routine resupply of NSDK stocks is the responsibility of The Military Depot and Distribution Agency in Skrydstrup. If a given item is not available from military stocks it is purchased from private Danish companies. NSDK makes purchases to a value of approximately 25m DKK every year. The field post service requires the establishing of postal routes to units in the field and of administrative procedures, as well as the actual handling of letters and parcels. About 315 m3 post is dispatched every year, weighing a total of approx. 80 tons. Administrative tasks related to materials include support to deployed units’ stock control. Several times during the course of a mission, selected NSDK personnel carry out a visit in order to make sure that stock accounts tally. This ensures that what is on the shelves at the National Support Element in the mission, is the same as that registered in the Danish Military’s SAP accounting system DeMars.

National Support Element - NSE The National Support Element receives supplies from Denmark by plane, ship or truck, registers them in the DeMars SAP system, re-packs them and loads them into trucks for delivery to their destination: soldiers in the field. This task entails securing appropriate transport to some extremely remote locations and is often a significant challenge. Some of the material delivered will be stored at the depot but most of it is sent on directly. Received material is sorted, re-packed and dispatched by planes or helicopters or loaded onto trucks. These tasks are handled on a daily basis and the unit is thus kept very busy. The NSE key tasks are to provide terminal services, warehousing, local purchasing services, postal services and stock control. Terminal services encompass handling planes, ships, trains and trucks loaded with supplies and dealing with the relevant documentation. In order to reduce transport costs the NSE makes as many local purchases as possible. This also means that the NSE contributes to the local economy. The process of negotiating prices in a foreign country is often a significant challenge for the NSE buyers. Mail from home is one of the things soldiers in the field look forward to more than anything else and getting the mail out is one of the NSE main functions and one which can really affect morale. There is nothing like receiving a parcel or a letter from friends and family back home. All letters and parcels are sent both to and from the missions by the postal service. This entails delivering and receiving mail at the airport and the daily task of sorting and franking deliveries.

In addition the NSE also provides bookkeeping and accounting services including settling accounts with other nations in the mission. The NSE also provides security services for visitors. During certain periods the missions can receive quite a number of guests and visitors from Denmark. This entails a significant work load for terminal personnel at the destination airport and also for the security and escort personnel in the camp itself. It is their job to transport visitors safely and securely to and from the arrival airport and in the local area. This job entails significant risks but as a result of the unit’s hard work and professionalism visits normally proceed according to plan. It is the job of terminal employees to transport travellers to and from the airport, a job that often takes place during the hours when they would normally be asleep. As well as collecting several hundred travellers from the airport, terminal personnel is also responsible for ensuring that packages pass customs checks so that the soldiers can receive supplies and parcels from home. The NSE is responsible for a wide range of demanding tasks which require highly trained personnel. This personnel has to be able to work independently and deliver an exceptional standard of service. The NSE employees work long hours both in the office and in the field to ensure that they satisfy their customers: the Danish troops.

DDLE - DANILOG Deployable Logistics Element When handling larger groups of people or larger quantities of materials DANILOG establishes a temporary unit, called a DDLE, comprising of staff with the particular skills required to get the job done, such as management, communication, bookkeeping and transport of heavy and hazardous substances. Tasks which commonly entail the establishing of a DDLE include large-scale material rotations, the returning of worn material and resupplying same, or a camp closure. The wear on vehicles is up to ten times the rate in Afghanistan as compared to that in Denmark. The removal of large quantities of material and the closure of camps entails a level of work that is beyond the capability of the national support element which still has to carry out its day-today resupply operations. It is the job of a DDLE to coordinate transports and the restructuring of materials to and from the mission area. They receive and handle aircraft with materials and vehicles and take receipt of damaged materials etc. from the mission area. Additionally, DDLE carry out packaging checks and make sure that loads are secure as well as completing manifests for vehicles and materials. The task of the DDLE is completed when all the material in a transport has reached its destination. Only then can they return home and at that point the DDLE team is dissolved. A DDLE is manned so that there is sufficient personnel involved to get the job done – but no more. They need to be extremely flexible and to be ready to work at any time of the day or night. The frequency with which a DDLE is required reflects realities in missions such as Afghanistan and Kosovo. During 2009 and 2010 three DDLE were deployed.

Deres rolle indebærer, at de er ”first in” og ”last out”.

Movement Control – MOVCON MOVCON is DANILOG’s ”frontrunner” unit. It performs NSE functions until the NSE team is in place in the mission area. Their role entails being the first in and the last out. They perform reconnaissance and close down when the mission is finished. Their primary task is to establish and operate terminals for sea, air, rail and road transport and ensure that people, goods and materials reach their intended destination. One of their regular tasks is to receive personnel arriving by air. This task is particularly intensive and their skills in particular demand at the time of significant personnel or material rotations or mission alterations. MOVCON performs reconnaissance at quays, checks civilian depots, warehouses and all types of terminals, secures information regarding transhipment areas and transport routes into and out of harbour areas, airports and railway depots. On the basis of this information MOVCON staff prepares a plan detailing the order in which material and vehicles are to be loaded or offloaded from ships or planes and where they should gather before being sent out by road to their destination. Shipments for the mission area are normally loaded at the ports of Esbjerg or Kalundborg whilst air transports are normally loaded at the airports in Karup and Kastrup. MOVCON also works from all the other Danish terminals. MOVCON handle all paperwork and prepare documentation for customs, police authorities, and on occasion for diplomats and establish agreements and working arrangements with military and civilian agents and specialist companies in connection with transports. Working as a MOVER is particularly demanding. It takes at least 1,000 hours of training plus experience with a range of projects over a considerable period of time before staff can really feel that they are fully qualified, and even then new challenges will keep popping up. DANILOG takes care to select and train staff who is capable of learning the numerous procedures and regulations relating to the handling of hazardous substances and the many, many details they need to be familiar with in the course of their work. MOVERS are sticklers for detail, and they have to be fluent in English. In addition to working with precision and paying attention to every single detail, MOVERS need to be flexible and to overcome challenges when complex plans have to be carried out.

Endeligt gennemfører Tung Transport Detachement buskørsel i Danmark.

Heavy Transport Detachment DANILOG’s special transports are organised by the Heavy Transport Detachment. Every time army units participate in exercises at one of the country’s many military training areas where infantry fighting vehicles and tanks are involved DANILOG is responsible for moving the heavy military equipment. In addition the Heavy Transport Detachment also arranges bus transports in Denmark. DANILOG´s wide range of experience with transport planning is also called upon in connection with national and international events. During the Climate Summit in December 2009 both the headquarters and the transport division were manned by DANILOG personnel. They ensured that all the heads of government, ministers and other delegates made it safely through the Copenhagen traffic to Bella Centret and any other Danish destinations they wished to visit. The Heavy Transport Detachment employs the Danish military’s best qualified and most experienced drivers who all take the job of handling 90% of military heavy transports very seriously. The Heavy Transport Detachment handles about 1,400 transports every year.

On a damp and cold Wednesday morning in April a ramp was lowered from M/S Tor Futura and with exquisite precision 2,500 tons of vehicles were unloaded at berth 12 in the port of Kalundborg. The vehicles were packed on all three decks of the vessel and if you lined them up bumper to bumper there would be a line of vehicles 1,600 meters long. The infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) each weighing 32 tons are not leaving under their own steam. They are always transported on flatbed trucks from DANILOG’s Heavy Transport Detachment. Navy MOVCON personnel direct operations aboard ship whilst MOVCON personnel from DANILOG in Vordingborg take care of the vehicles once they are on land.

Personnel drawn from the reserve DANILOG, as well as the rest of the Danish military, often has to call on personnel from the reserve. There is a clear need for a ”Military Temps Corps” so it is important to maintain a good working relationship with formerly employed personnel who wish, on occasion, to continue to work with DANILOG. That is why the Army Operational Command Denmark has resurrected the Reserve Officer Training Program as a practical general training program. The object is to qualify the trainee to handle Army Basic Training plus additional training which qualifies them to work for the army staff. In relation to DANILOG these qualifications are particularly in demand in MOVCON terminal tasks. DANILOG has established a news portal from which a newsletter is sent 2 – 3 times a year featuring information about and offers to join exercises and accredited training programs.

Kurset gennemføres i 2 moduler á 2 ugers varighed.

Other DANILOG tasks IIn addition to its role in supplying the Danish troops, DANILOG handles a number of other important tasks for Army Operational Command Denmark. These include training and administrative support for individuals sent to destinations all round the world both to mission locations and as UN observers. Such training is carried out at the Training Centre and the associated administrative tasks are also the responsibility of DANILOG.

DANILOG Training Centre DANILOG Training Centre arranges a number of courses of which individual preparatory courses are the most significant. These are held 6 times a year in two two-week modules and are attended by about 360 participants. The subjects covered are as follows: medical (advanced first aid), administrative and mission specific briefings, and self defence. A third module consisting of language courses and information about dangerous insects and bugs is specifically for serving personnel. The course qualifies participants for deployment. In addition the Training Centre provides: • Basic logistics courses twice a year plus an extended hands-on specialist course in three modules for trained personnel. • Managerial courses of 1½ days duration covering topics which include the overall framework for the Defence Command Denmark, the Foreign Ministry, the Defence Ministry, and Army Operational Command Denmark, plus HR parameters such as stress management & contact skills as well as the functional services – the Forces Personnel Service, the Forces Health Service and the Forces Judge Advocate Corps. • Personnel administration theory and administrative training tasks. • Contact & welfare courses for trainees with broadly-based general skills. • One-day course in the handling of mail with subsequent on-the-job training. • A Defence Command Denmark course which provides persons without military rank with a basic military training.

Administration of international operations The administrative group undertakes casework and administrative tasks for small teams and individuals sent on international service under the direct responsibility of an operational authority. This includes amongst other duties the completion of personnel information forms for reserve personnel posted to international duty.
