Saadi—Ghazal 417 “Without words of love for you” Without words of love for you coming to my tongue, The color of my face brings the news of my secret condition.

Sometimes I say to myself that I should moan from the turmoil of my state, But then I say to myself again, “It’s obvious; what needs is there for words?” No part of this world or the hereafter occupies the recesses of my mind; My occupation is seeing you, and I am beyond the two worlds. If it is such that my poor, miserly face Is seen at the door of another, then drive me away from your door. I mean to scatter my soul upon you; I do not mean to free myself from your tether.1 If you are the Shīrīn of this era, then likewise throw me a glance; For through the madness of my love for you, I am the Farhād of this era.2 I don’t have the endurance to be separated from you, nor do you have the memory of our nearness: I gave my heart to patience for I know no other remedy. On the same day I set off on the road to you, I said to myself: “I will not reach my Belovèd until I’ve reached the end of my days.” Pearls are dripping from my eyes at the memory of your garnet lips; Unfurl a glance to me that would make me drip pearls unceasing. I cut my words short because I looked and saw That my life is nearing its end, and I cannot deliver them further.3

1

I am ready to give myself to you entirely, to lay my soul at your feet; I am devoted to you completely, I revel in your binding.

I have more things to say, but I won't be able to finish, as I am approaching the end of my life.
