‫زاویه ی ظلی‬ “The Angle of Darkness”

a scene by Daniel Reza Sabzghabaei + Mina Salehpour

(2020)

N: i close my eyes i open my mouth i remember: They gave us dolls - puppets without faces Dolls without eyes, dolls without mouths D: It's forbidden for us to paint faces only God can do that only He paints faces he Paints all faces He... N: And we? We Looked at the dolls without a face And we? We Did not find any names for them. So we did not find any names for them. Because we did not recognize them. We did not recognize ourselves in them so they were puppets and they had to stay dolls. Dolls without faces. D: It's forbidden for us to paint faces only God can do that only He paints faces he Paint all faces He... N: And we? We Looked at The faceless and did not recognize us in them. So they became meaningless. Their meaning, lost. And we, our reflection. Because we are not allowed to paint our faces. To show our faces. To have faces… D+N: Our names only placeholders. Labels on boxes of the faceless. Chosen randomly. From a series of meaningless names.

The Angle of Darkness by Mina Salehpour and Daniel Reza Sabzghabaei [after a story by an anonymous Persian woman]

Dolls without faces. People without names. Lost – their meaning. Lost – their being. Lost – their faces. Loosing themselves. ALL DOLLS: It's forbidden for us to paint faces only God can do that only He paints faces he Paint all faces He... N: She paints faces. [Narrator breaks free of masks and removes masks and coverings from wind players and dolls. She then

‫آزادی‬

paints across their faces. A word in Farsi which is special as all of the letters do not connect, they stand apart freely: this word is pronounced “Ā-zā-dī” and is the word for “freedom” in English.] [The five form the word freedom, separate but together as one entity, each with their own identity.] [The five drift back into the narrator’s consciousness as the memory fades]
