Lomira NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION Lomira Area Students Learn About The Newspaper

by Breonna Bleuel

Approximately 100 students in the Lomira, Theresa, and Brownsville area had the opportunity to learn more about what goes into a newspaper. As part of Newspapers Education, Dodge in County Pionier's Heather Kopsi, sales manager, and I visited five classrooms, mostly fifth grades, at the schools of Lomira Elementary, Theresa Learning Community, St. Paul's Lutheran School in Brownsville, and St. John's Lutheran School in Lomira. Over the course of a few weeks in February we met with students, to learn about how we put the newspaper together on a weekly basis and the importance of having newspapers available to inform the public. The students were excited to learn about the newspaper and asked many questions. On this page and the next two pages, you will see the product of the students' work during the time spent in the classroom during the month of February. Some students looked through the newspaper at different articles and photos and drew cartoons to whichever articles or photos drew their attention. Other students chose to write letters to the editor on topics of their choice.

Each student was given a copy of the most recent Dodge County Pionier to take home and every teacher was given access to the Dodge County Pionier online and in print until

May so that the newspaper can be incorporated into a classroom activity. The eedition of the newspaper is available to the public as well, at the same cost as the hard copy of the news-

paper. It was a privilege to visit the classrooms with the students and teach them the importance of newspapers.
