FFA Socials

National FFA Week February 22-29 2019 National FFA Convention In October, Horicon FFA Members traveled to Indianapolis to attend the 92th National FFA Convention. Each year, Horicon FFA teams up with other FFA chapters from around the state to share a coach bus for the trip. Along the way, the group made stops for agricultural-related tours. Some of the stops included Fair Oaks Farms, Universal Technical Institute, Indianapolis Zoo, Indy 500, Jelly Belly, the Milwaukee Brewers Miller Park Turf Management facilities, Honey Bee Farms and more. Horicon FFA members meet other members from across the country and learn about agricultural programs. The convention features keynote speaker sessions, a national career fair and other sessions that encourage members to try new things and step out of their comfort zones.

The FFA Officer Team comes up with social events each year. Some of the events are service socials and some are member fun socials. In December, members made cookies and cards for Marvin’s Manor for the holidays. Horicon FFA members made over 300 cookies. Some cookies were bagged up and given to Horicon Junior/Senior High School staff as well. There was also an ugly sweater contest, which Maddie Kellogg won.

FFA In The Spring And Summer The annual FFA Greenhouse opens each year on the first Saturday in May and stays open through the last Saturday in May. Students reap the benefits of hands on learning projects through planting, transplanting and more. As part of a community project, plants grown in the greenhouse are planted in the City of Horicon street planters. Many Horicon FFA members start their FFA supervised agricultural experience (SAE) projects through participation in the greenhouse. Plants that are not sold during the open times are donated next door to the Marvin’s Manor garden beds.

What is left from that is either sold at the Horicon Farm Market or planted in the school garden. FFA members help maintain the garden throughout the summer. When produce is ready to harvest it is also either sold in the Horicon Farm Market and/or put in the school lunch when school resumes in September. FFA members who help maintain the garden during summer also take part in activities such as learning to pickle and freeze with Mrs. Alice Kern. These FFA members also enter produce at the Dodge County Fair. Horicon FFA member Autumn Linden won two blue ribbons in the foods preservation class at the fair last year with the dill pickles she made. Through sales, the FFA greenhouse and garden are sustainable and offer great opportunities teaching students life skills that prepare them for their future endeavors. The new officer team also plans the new school year of events during the summer. Alice Kern takes the officer team on a training trip where they learn leadership, communication, planning and their specific officer roles.

Halftime 2020 In January, Adriana Livieri and Faith Zickau attended the 2020 Halftime conference in Stevens Point, where they focused on the FFA Vision. They were able to gain leadership roles while learning about award opportunities as well as career and service projects.

Horicon National FFA Week February 22-29 Fundraising Horicon FFA’s three big fundraisers each year include the FFA greenhouse and farm market sales, the Horicon FFA Corn Boil and fruit and produce sales. Members dedicate themselves during these times to make sure the products are the best they can be. All of these activities are member operated. Horicon FFA supervisor Alice Kern helps set up and guide members, but they put in the hard work marketing, selling, sorting and preparing our products. These fundraisers assist in offering opportunities through FFA in premier leadership, personal growth and career success.

Midwest Horse Fair One of the FFA career development events is the Midwest Horse Fair. Horicon FFA had two judging teams attend, and the seventh grade team placed third overall. Members learn by either studying on their own or attending team practices at Majestic Winds Stables with Shelly Laing. Laing has been a great influence on many of the young members. Once the contest is over, students are encouraged to watch some of the horse shows and talk to various vendors.

Each year Horicon middle and high school FFA members attend the Wisconsin State FFA Convention in June. In 2019, Maggie Condon and Carter Lentz of Horicon FFA sang in the State FFA Choir. Casey Wald played in the State FFA Band. Faith Zickau was the Horicon FFA delegate and participated in the vote of the current Section 10 State Vice President. Brianna Raatz, Chance Tuttle, Lily Newman, Cameran Makowski and Casey Wald also earned their State FFA degree. The State FFA Convention is a great way to see all of the different options FFA offers for premier leadership, personal growth and career success.

Casey Wald, Aalyea Seifert-Doll and Faith Zickau were invited to Higher Grounds Coffee in Beaver Dam for the Farm Market/Agriculture night to promote the Horicon FFA program. Wald brought her show rabbits and supplies and Aalyea Seifert-Doll brought her chickens. There were other agriculture vendors and exhibits in addition to a brat fry served by Beaver Dam FFA. Adults and children had the opportunity to learn about our local agriculture.

World Dairy Expo Each year at the expo, Horicon FFA members participate in forages judging, dairy products evaluation, dairy cattle evaluation and dairy cattle showmanship. After the competitions, members are encouraged to walk through and observe all of the different vendors relating to the dairy industry. Members also watch some of the cattle shows.
