Changes Come To FDL Fair In 2018

—It’s Not Summer Without It

The 167th Fond du Lac County Fair will see some changes when it comes to town July 18-22.

A new event to the fair that will be fun for the entire family will be Bingo.

Daily bingo games will be played in the Expo Center. On July 18, 19, 20 and 21, you will be able to play from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

Also on Saturday, July 21, games will be played from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. On Sunday, July 22, you can play from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.

Family Bingo is being sponsored by Seneca Foods. The Brothertown Indian Tribe will be at the fair daily running Bingo in the Expo Center.

It is free to play. Winners of each game will receive a small prize. Bring your family and join the fun!

The Expo Center will be the hub of some exciting activity this year. More vendors have already signed up to be in the building during the fair.

New food vendors will be in and around the Expo Center.

Also in the Expo Center, the Fair will be offering music on the stage.

This will be easy listening music in the air conditioned building. Bands and times will be determined, so check the schedule at the building.

Princess My Party will be in the Expo Center three days during the fair for all youngsters to enjoy. On Thursday, July 19, Snow White, Belle, Elsa and Anna will be in the building from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. On Friday, July 20, stop by to meet Tinker Bell, Batman and Batgirl from 10-4 p.m.

On Saturday, July 21, meet Ariel, Cinderella, Black Widow and Spiderman from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Another new feature for event-goers will be the Sea Lion Splash Show.

The only traveling, selfcontained Sea Lion show.

Audiences can view these wonderful creatures during fair hours and can

watch presentations at various times throughout the day. Come see what sea lions do in their own habitat as well as on command.

The Sea Lion Splash Show is sponsored by Grande Cheese Company. Shows will be held daily at 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. This will be a lot of fun for the whole family.

A slight change is being made to the tractor and truck pulls. This year, these events will be combined in the grandstand on Wednesday night, July 18. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and is sponsored by the Service Motor Company. Enjoy the great action from both of these events on the same night.

Many people are remembering how much fun they had at the Fond du Lac Fair when they were younger. The organizers of the fair are hoping some of these new activities will encourage everyone to bring their families back to the fair for some great fun. It is a great way to continue some family traditions at the fair and start new ones.

Of course, there will always be those favorite activities waiting for you again this year.

The Agromatic Holstein Futurity will be held in the Cow Palace on Friday, July 20, at 6:45 p.m. Area runners and walkers can participate again in the Fondy Fair 5K Run/Walk and Kid’s Fun Run on Saturday, July 21, at 8 a.m.

Local talent will take the Expo Center Floorquest Family Stage as part of the popular Re/Max Heritage Fond’s Got Talent competition on Saturday, July 21, at 1 p.m. On the Leinie Lodge stage at 1 p.m. that same day will be more local talent in the Paul Levandowski Memorial Battle of the Bands competition.

will be the return of the popular area band the Back Home Boys. The group broke up more than a year ago, but they love the fair so much that they have agreed to get back together for this annual show as long as they can.

They will take the Leinie Lodge stage on Saturday, July 21, from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. and again at 10 p.m. until the fair closes.

On Sunday, July 22, many popular events will be returning to the Fair.

First will be the annual Little Britches Animal Show in the Cow Palace at 10 a.m. Area youngsters will get their first chance to show an animal.

Then, the Fair will host the popular Fire Department Water Fights, sponsored by Goebel Roofing and Siding, at 1 p.m., north of the carnival.

One of the biggest events of the week is always the annual Demotion Derby at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the grandstand.

Throughout the week, you will also still find some of your favorite activities like the Ag Birthing Center, Nick’s Kids Show and the BMX Bike Show.

Of course, local 4-H and FFA youth will be exhibiting their animals and projects all week longs.

Flag Raising Ceremony Starts Fair

A flag raising ceremony will officially open the 167th Fond du Lac County Fair. It will be held at 10:15 a.m., on Wednesday, July 18, in front of the Fair Office, located in the Recreation Building on the

fairgrounds.

Members of the American Legion Trier-Puddy Post 75 will raise the flag. The National Anthem will be sung after the flag is raised.

The flagpoles were donated in 2002 to the

Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11.

The fairgrounds are located at the corner of Martin Avenue and Fond du Lac Avenue in Fond du Lac.

The Fond du Lac County Fair will celebrate its 167th fair in 2018.

The first county fair, held in Rosendale, began with an address at half past one on the first day, September 29, 1852. The event was held for two days.

Dairy cattle, fine wool, tools and manufactured items were exhibited at the first fair. Household arts and garden vegetables were on display to be judged.

The best stallion received a $4 premium.

Working oxen and steers were awarded $3 for being the best in the class. The best sample of butter, not less than 50 pounds, was awarded

$5. The best sample of sugar, also not less than 50 pounds, was given a $4 premium.

Numerous activities are being planned for the 2018 Fond du Lac County Fair, being held July 18-22, at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds.

The theme for the fair “Education, Entertainment and Affordable Family Fun” is the creative genius of Mr. Williard Henken, who retired from the Fond du Lac County Agricultural Society in November 2001. His background as the first dean of the University of WisconsinFond du Lac and his love of the fair are certainly

reflected in not only the theme, but also in the many years of service he gave to the fair organization.

Sea Lion Splash Show New To FDL Fair

New to the Fond du Lac County Fair this year will be the Sea Lion Splash Show. There will be performance throughout the day during all five days of the fair. It will be located right outside the Recreation Building and Cow Palace.

Sea Lion Splash is a unique show that will have crowds cheering and laughing. The show is educational with a Splash!

The sea lions will amaze the crowd as they balance balls, shoot hoops, dance, perform handstands, and flash their pretty smiles. This is the only show in the U.S. to feature both Californian and South American sea lions.

The idea of the sea lion show originated when Squalus started taking in beached sea lions who were unable to be returned to the wild due to age or injuries and unable to provide food for themselves.

Squalus provides a permanent home for these sea lions for the rest of their lives.

This show is the only traveling sea lion show in the United States.

Squalus, Inc., ensures that the sea lions have more square footage of water per animal in the show than most sea lions have in the zoos.

The animals’ welfare and comfort is always placed first. Their transportation was designed specifically for the maximum comfort of the sea

lions.

Bingo At The Fond du Lac County Fair

New to the Fond du Lac County Fair this year is something that the entire family will enjoy — Bingo. Games will be held everyday of the fair in the Expo Center.

The Brothertown Indian Tribe will be running the Bingo games. It

is being sponsored by Seneca Foods.

It will be free to play Bingo. Winners for each game will receive a small prize.

Your chance to play will happen from 6 p.m.8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20, and

Saturday, July 21. On Saturday, there will also be games played from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Bingo will be played from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, the last day of the fair.

Bring your entire family and join the fun!

Warm up your ovens and get out your favorite recipe because the Baking Contest will return to the Fond du Lac County Fair in 2018!

This year’s contest will take place on Wednesday, July 18, at 3 p.m. in the Recreation Building.

Entries from both youth and adults will be

accepted and judged in separate divisions and sampling will take place after the event. Professional bakers are not allowed to participate.

The only requirements is that the food item must contain at least three dairy products and you must bring the recipe with you to the

competition. Presentation will be about 60 percent of the judging.

Entrants that day must sign in with JoAnn Hall the day of the event.

Fond du Lac County Fair To Feature Annual Ag Birthing Center

Visitors to the Fond du Lac County Fair will again have the chance to see their favorite farm animals at the fair’s Culver’s of FDL and Oshkosh Ag Birthing Center.

The Ag Birthing Center is celebrating its sixth year of being available to fair goers.

The Ag Birthing Center is a unique educational event at the Fond du Lac County Fair, as it showcases the birthing process for several farm animals. Several dairy cows are part of the exhibit and will give birth to their calves throughout the week of the fair for fair goers to watch and experience.

There will also be ducklings to see at the birthing center.

Visitors to the birthing center have the opportunity to ask questions about the birthing pro-

cess and to learn more about the care farmers provide to their animals.

“This event was started to share our farm story with our local communities,” says Katie Grinstead, part-owner of her family’s dairy farm Vir-Clar Farm, LLC, in Fond du Lac. “Seeing a cow give birth gives our visitors a first-hand look at the beauty of new life on the farm and how we care for our animals and raise them to be strong and healthy. What we as farmers experience every day might be a once-in-a-lifetime moment for some that get to see it for the first-time at the fair.”

The Ag Birthing Center is staffed with those who have experience working with animals and caring for them, ready to answer questions and keep the animals com-

fortable and safe during the fair week. An experienced herdperson and veterinarian are also on staff to assist in the calving process.

The Ag Birthing Center is a free exhibit for all fair goers of all ages, and gives them the opportunity to see the miracle of life unfold. The Ag Birthing Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. all days of the fair. Check out this exhibit and learn something new about Wisconsin Agriculture!

The annual Service Motor Company Tractor Pull at the Fond du Lac County Fair will have a change to it this year.

This year, the truck pull will be added to the event.

The Tractor and Truck Pull will take place on Wednesday, July 18, at 7 p.m.

The crowd favorite Service Motor Company Tractor Pull draws in approximately 175 tractors from all around east central Wisconsin. See antiques all the way up to the big turbo-powered tractors compete for cash prizes and brag-

ging rights.

The truck pull will feature semis, two-wheel drive and an open stock division.

Registration and weigh-in will start two hours before the pull.

Tractor Tracks will officiate and run the event, which will feature antique, farm and special tractor classes, and semis, two-wheel drive and an open stock division for trucks with various prizes for winners.

Service Motor Company is the proud sponsor for the tractor pull competition.

The Division BMX Stunt Show sponsored

by Osborn and Son Trucking will again be performing at the Fond du Lac County Fair this year. This year they will hold shows everyday of the fair, with shows throughout the day.

The Division BMX Stunt Team is formed from an elite group of professional BMX riders who have come together to both promote the sport of BMX riding as well as show the world what life is truly about, riding with friends and channeling energy toward something positive.

With more than 15 years of BMX performances under their belts, the Division Stunt Team knows how to entertain and keep an audience on the edge of their seats.

Witnessing stunt riding on television is one thing, but to have it up close and personal is an experience that will leave spectators in amazement and wanting more. Watch in awe as riders perform tricks at heights reaching over 25 feet above the ground.

With high-flying, death-defying entertainment, the Division Stunt Team creates an energetic atmosphere every time they perform. A professional announcer will let you know about the stunts they are performing and will leave you with bellyaches from their non-stop antics.

The shows will last be-

tween 20-30 minutes, with an autograph session following each performance.

Professional Bull Riding & Barrel Racing Is Back

It was so popular last year, the Fond du Lac County Fair decided to bring back the Professional Bull Riding and Barrel Racing by Rice Bull Riding Company. It will start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 19.

Get ready for the heartpounding, bone-breaking action as professional bull riding and barrel racing comes to the area.

New this year is the addition of VIP seating for the bull riding and barrel racing competition. VIP tickets include general admission exclusive ring-side seating on the south end of the arena and a drink ticket for $20. Only a limited number of tickets will be sold.

The Fond du Lac County Fair will again not be charging a fee to enter the fairgrounds for the fair.

There will be a $5 charge per vehicle for parking.

You will need to pay to get into the Grandstand for the entertainment each night. The price for the grandstand will vary depending on the event.

Grandstand pricing will be as follows: Wednesday, July 18 — Service Motor Company Tractor/Truck Pull, $11, ages 12 and under are $5.

Thursday, July 19 — Professional Bull Riding and Barrel Racing, $13, ages 12 and under $5.

VIP tickets $20 and include general admission, exclusive ring-side seating on the south end of the arena and a drink ticket.

Friday, July 20 — Jon Pardi, $30 general admission, Elite VIP $100 (includes front row access, parking, two free drinks) VIP on the track $45.

Saturday, July 21 —

Alice In Dairyland To Attend Holstein Futurity

Kaitlyn Riley, Wisconsin’s 71st Alice in Dairyland will attend the Agromatic Holstein Futurity on Friday, July 20, at the 167th Fond du Lac County Fair.

Riley learned first-hand the passion and work ethic of Wisconsin farmers growing up on her family’s registered Jersey dairy farm. Wanting to share agriculture’s story, she studied strategic communications and broadcast journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

After several years in Wisconsin media, in 2017, she returned to the family farm to manage calf and heifer care. As Alice, Riley states, “I will give a positive voice to Wisconsin’s diverse agriculture industry. Through my travels, I will learn from the many faces of agriculture to better educate urban and rural audiences about the importance of Wisconsin food, fuel and fiber production in our daily lives.”

The Futurity is a unique cattle show of animals entered as calves, by their owners, and are shown for the first time as a twoyear-old.

Leinie Lodge Returns To The FDL County Fair If you’re looking for a great place to meet up with friends and neighbors at this year’s Fond du Lac County Fair, you will want to check out the Leinie Lodge. The Lodge will be located behind the grandstand near the concessions area.

It will feature many great entertainment acts throughout the Fair.

On Wednesday, July 18, start the day with local cover band Orange Afternoon from 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Then dance to popular local band Boogie and the Yo-Yoz from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Thursday, July 19, enjoy the music of Savanna Rose from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.-10:30 p.m.

On Friday, July 20, you will be treated to music all day. The Leftovers will start the day from 12 p.m.-4 p.m., and Ask Your Mother will play from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. and 10 p.m.-11:30 p.m.

Fond du Lac Fair Grandstand Musical Acts To Feature Christian Rock Band Skillet And Country Star Jon Pardi

This year’s Fond du Lac County Fair kicks off on Wednesday, July 18.

Check out this year’s Miller Lite Grandstand Stage music line-up, which features superstars John Pardi and Skillet.

Jon Pardi On Friday, July 20, at 8 p.m., it is time for some country music with TJon Pardi. He will take the stage at 8 p.m.

The snarl in his voice sets the tone for Jon Pardi’s California Sunrise. He’s a traditional country singer, bred in the West Coast honky tonks, and he won’t apologize for chasing the dream on his own terms.

It might be considered contemporary cool to inject country songs with programmed drums, rap phrasing and poppy melodies. But Pardi isn’t worried about what’s trendy. He’s more concerned with making country music that will last, and California Sunrise successfully hits that target. It’s stocked with classic Nashville melody, blue-collar lyrical themes and authentic country instrumentation — real drums, loud-and-proud fiddles and tangy steel guitar. The album’s 12 songs draw a direct link to such forbearers as Dwight Yoakam, George Strait and Marty Stuart, and it’s intentional.

“There’s a growing audience for throwback,” Pardi says. “People want to hear somebody who really enjoyed the ’90s country music era and brings that to today.”

Pardi established that lane with his 2014 debut, Write You a Song, a rough-androwdy project that made him familiar to the suddenly-hip country crowd,

thanks to his Top 10 party song “Up All Night.” The music oozed with youthful brashness and longneck longing, and Pardi drew a raucous following, increasingly selling out 1,000-2,000 ticket clubs, sometimes out-performing higher-profile country acts playing across town the same night.

In fact, as Pardi began adding material from the new album into the set, he was shocked at the passion with which the music was consumed.

As he played unreleased songs from California Sunrise, he discovered fans were already singing back the music verbatim — even the verses — having learned the songs from YouTube postings of earlier concerts. They’re ready for Jon Pardi, and he knows exactly what they need.

Military Day On Saturday, July 21

To honor those who are fighting for our freedom, the Fond du Lac County Fair is pleased to host Military Day on Saturday, July 21, courtesy of the Military Day sponsor, Mercury Marine. All active and retired military members and one guest will receive a $5 food voucher.

A program will also take place that day. It will feature a performance from the Fond du Lac

Senior Center Scamp Band from 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m. Then a community program including a representative of the Mercury Marine Military Veteran’s Network and the Fond du Lac County Fair Board will be held.

All this will happen on the air conditioned Expo Building Stage. Food vouchers can also be picked up at the stage area and are good from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Infants may be too young to run the Fondy Fair 5K Run/Walk, but anyone not yet walking will get a race of their own when the Fondy Fair Baby Crawling Contest kicks off right after the Kids’ Run portion of the Fondy Fair 5K Run/Walk.

The baby race is expected to begin around 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 21. Entry is free and more information can be found on the Fond du Lac County Fair website or the Fair Facebook page. Race day registration will be set up near the fair office on the Fond du Lac County

Fairgrounds between 7 a.m.-9 a.m. on race day.

The children will crawl to the finish line on a carpet. One adult is welcome to stand at the finish line and coax the child to the end with a favorite toy or stuffed animal. An adult must also be at the start line.

Entrants must not yet be capable of walking.

Any racer who stands during the event will be disqualified.

The “quickest crawler” will be awarded a prize.

If a lot of babies are registered, qualifying heats will be held with the winners of each heat participating in a final race.

Home Brew Competition Continues At The Fair

Wisconsin is known for its beer and the Fond du Lac area will be showcasing its beer in the third annual Home Beer contest at the Fond du Lac County Fair. It will take place on Saturday, July 21, at 1 p.m. in the Expo Building.

This competition will highlight local beer brewers.

You can enter your home brew. All you have to do is drop off your item at The Cellar Homebrew Store, 465 Washburn St. in Oshkosh by the close of business (6 p.m.) on Wednesday, July 18.

Arrangements may be made for pick up of group entries with competition organizer, Brian Dunn 920-410-8826.

The contest will be limited to 48 entries. It will cost $6 to enter your brew.

The Fondy Fair 5K Run/Walk and kids run is back for the eighth year.

This event will test your endurance running or bring you out for an early morning stroll. The 2018 Fondy Fair 5K Run/Walk will take place at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 21.

This family event will start and end on the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds. Runners and walkers of all skill levels are welcome to participate. The Fondy Fair 5K Run/Walk is also an opportunity to promote and educate event participants about the importance of agriculture in Fond du Lac County.

Runners and walkers in this race take off at 8 a.m. from the fairgrounds and will follow the 3.1 mile course that will eventually loop back to the fairgrounds. The quarter-mile and halfmile youth runs will start at 9:15 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow.

A registration fee is required to participate on the day of the race. The registration fee covers parking fee for the fair

on Saturday, July 21, a race t-shirt (only guaranteed to those registered

by July 15, 2018) and post-race refreshments.

The kids quarter- and half-mile runs are free but advance registration is requested to guarantee a race shirt. The baby crawling contest wraps up the running events after the kids run.

The crawling contest is also free.

Race check-in and late registration will be set up near the fair office on the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds between 7 a.m.-7:45 a.m. on race day. Please enter the fairgrounds on foot through the 17th Street gate. Advanced registration is strongly recommended.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each age category.

There will be a special division for 4-H and FFA members.

Hard working, dedicated, and enthusiastic project members will be placing their rabbits, chickens, turkeys, ducks, guinea pigs, and more up for

sale at this year’s auction.

Anyone wanting to bid at the auction can view the animals before the auction starting at 3 p.m. in the cow palace. You will need to register between 3 p.m.-4 p.m. if you would like to bid on an animal.

You do not have to be a bidder to attend the auction. Come and enjoy the fun.

Marchant Schmidt Again Hosting Food Drive On Sunday

Marchant Schmidt, LLC., is again sponsoring a food drive at the Fond du Lac County Fair this year. It will take place on Sunday, July 22.

The first 500 vehicles that arrive at the fair grounds with two non-perishable food items to donate will receive free parking for the day. Parking is $5 per vehicle every day at the fair with

free admission to the fairgrounds.

All food items collected will be donated to the Fondy Food Pantry.

This is the second year that Marchant Schmidt is sponsoring this program. Last year, they offered free parking to the first 100 cars and decided to increase that number this year.

Fire Department Water Fights Back By Popular Demand

For the fourth year, the Fond du Lac County Fair will be hosting a Firefighter Water Fight competition. This event will take place on Sunday, July 22, at 1 p.m.

The water fights are being sponsored by Goebel Roofing & Siding. It will be held on the

north end of the fairgrounds, just past the carnival rides.

Local fire departments will host teams to battle it out to be the champions. The winner will be able to take home bragging rights.

Each department will be allowed up to three

two-man teams to compete in the event. Most water fights allow fiveman teams, so this will be a twist to the usual competition you would see.

The Little Britches show competition will feature young kids pairing with older exhibitors to show animals in the show-ring during the Fond du Lac County Fair. It will give these young kids a chance to get a taste for the competition of the show and hopefully encourage them to participate with their own animals when they get older.

The Little Britches competitions will be held on Sunday, July 22, at 10 a.m. Sign-up is that same day from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Cow Palace. The judges for

the show will be the winners of the showmanship classes 7-8, 9-10, 11-13 for the respected species being shown.

To show in this competition, you must be a child who is five years of age by July 18, 2018 (the first day of the fair).

Little Britches will show an animal on site or bring an animal in that morning. If the animal is brought Sunday morning, the animal must be checked in with the superintendent. There will be no housing provided for these animals. The animal is to be born no earlier than March 1st.

Little Beefers will show a beef or dairy beef that will be brought in on Sunday morning.

Little Squealers will show a swine on site.

Little Lamb Chops will show a lamb on site.

The Fond du Lac County Fair will again feature the highly-popular Demolition Derby on Sunday, July 22. The show will begin at 2 p.m., with the gates opening at 12:30 p.m.

This year’s show will be run by International Demolition Derby. Rules and information for any-

one interested in participating can be found on the Fair’s website, www.fonddulaccountyfair.com.

For those who just like watching the action, there will be plenty of it throughout the afternoon. It is sure to be a “smashing” time.

This year, there is no

admission to get into the Fond du Lac County Fair but there will be a parking fee and a fee for grandstand events. If you are planning to attend the demolition derby, the cost for the event is $11 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under to get into the grandstand.

A wristband special will be going on for rides. The carnival rides open at 11 a.m. From noon-5 p.m. you can purchase a wrist band for $20 and ride unlim-

ited during that time frame.

The day will begin with the Family Day Horse Show in the horse arena at 9 a.m. The Little Britches Show will be held at 10 a.m. in the Cow Palace. The Kiddie Tractor Pull will immediately follow the Little Britches Show.

The Grandstand will feature the highly-popular demolition derby, which will start at 2 p.m.

An event that has gained a lot of popularity is the fire department water fights. They will be held on the north end of the grounds, just past

the midway, at 1 p.m.

Fairgoers will also be treated to entertainment on the Leinie Lodge stage, Family Stage, Ag Birthing Center, Division BMX Stunt Show, Sea Lion Splash Show, and Nick’s Kids Show.

Check out the achievements of area 4H members in their fashion revue at 1 p.m. and 4-H graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. in the expo building.
