DanielAllenCohen,aMiami-basedartist renowned for his multidisciplinary approach, transforms popular culture into conceptual art. His creations are nuanced reflections of societal values, desires, necessities, and vices, which often find themselvesintricatelyinterwoven.
Cohen, a self-taught artist, started his journey exploring various media forms, including photography and graphic design. By 2015, he embarked on the innovative series, 'This Is Addictive,' cleverly casting society's addictive behaviors in the light of periodic elements, each accompanied by a humorously insightful 'drug label' Active Ingredients,SideEffects, andWarnings.
Exhibitions and art fairs across the globe have spotlighted Cohen's work, gaining him recognition and inclusion in numerous brand collaborations and esteemed private collections. For Cohen, life revolves around the pursuit of balance, moderation, and authenticity amidstourconsumer-drivensociety.
His curiosity lies in the human race's enthrallingdancewithneedsanddesires, and howcleverlyourcultureblurstheselines.

DRUGS PERIODIC TABLE
PPublished in 1869 as an amalgam of several scientists’ career-defining research, the Periodic Table of Elements is today all but forgotten. Perhaps still utilized in middle school science class as an exercise in rote memorization, the table’s function as an integral tool in understanding the chemical elements that sustain life has become outdated. In his 2017 series, Periodic Table of Drugs, Cohen addresses this shift and reconstructs the paradigm of elements he sees as possessing value in today’s society: drugs. Usingthesamegridformatoftheoriginaltable,Cohenparodies the display of elements such as lithium, carbon and magnesium by replacing them with various recreational drugs like LSD, cocaine and marijuana. With each drug comes a description of corresponding “non-factual” facts—for instance, in cocaine, readersaretoldsideeffectsinclude:inflatedego, expertisewith razorblades, rockstarmentalityandextremeparanoia.
Also included in each drug’s display is a three dimensional, to-scale example of the corresponding substance, begging the question of whether the specimen is authentic or artificial. Compelling as individual displays of drugsinisolationbutalsoasacomplete series of twenty five altogether, Cohen’s project encourages viewers to question the (mis)allocation of value in contemporary culture; however, with irony and genuine curiosity rather than throughamoralizinglens.

HOFMANN UNIVERSITY
An ImmersiveArt Exhibit at CONTEXTArt Fair Miami (2019)
HHofmann University is Cohen’s most ambitious project in 2019, Cohen created an immersive art installation that apes the aesthetic of a college chemistry classroom. The setting is his invented Hofmann University, named after eponymous Swiss scientist Albert Hofmann who discovered and first ingested LSD in the mid-twentieth century. Hofmann wrote extensively on the drug, calling it “sacred” and convinced it unlocked a deeper, more mystical reality for its users. Cohen’s University classroom is the inventiveexhibitionspace,moreappropriatelysite-specificthan any white-walled gallery could be, to debut the new format of his Periodic Table of Drugs.
Apart from its identity as an exhibition space, theclassroomitselfisanintegralaspectofthe viewingexperience:theroomisbedeckedwith science equipment and school accoutrements like backpacks, notepads, student essays and exams. The textbooks are all related to narcotics and the edifying posters on the wall are parodies of typical science posters, illustratingthemesrelatedtodrugs, ratherthan physics or traditional chemistry. This installation not only provides an environment to view Cohen’s series with some intellectual splatter but also explores the distinctions between art and life, and the power given to educational spaces by our unquestioning faith inthem.

FEENY’S PHOTO
IIn 2019, Cohen was inspired by his grandparents’ cherished business, decided to resurrect Feeny’s Photo. Withadeep-seateddesiretohonorhis family’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of photography, Cohen transformed the concept into something entirely revolutionary. He breathed new life into the photo lab, infusing it with hisinnovativevisionandcontemporaryarttechniques. Cohen’s reimagined Feeny’s Photo made its grand debut at the prestigious LA Art Show, immediately capturingtheattentionoftheartworld.Thecollection featured oversized acrylic film strips, meticulously hand-sculpted to add depth and dimension, and hyper-realisticoversizedPolaroids
that challenged the conventional flatness of photographs. Love letters adorned with vintage, artistically aged envelopes and photos wrapped in oversized plastic tape further demonstrated Cohen’s commitment to blending nostalgia with modernity.
Thiscollectionwasmorethanjustatribute;itwas a bold statement that redefined the art of photography. Each piece in Feeny’s Photo showcased Cohen’s versatility as an artist and his ability to transform traditional photography into immersive three-dimensional sculptures. The innovative presentation breathed new life into the art form, making it tactile and engaging in a way thatdigitalimagescouldneverachieve.

PRECIOUS BARS
The trope is that children crave chocolate while adults crave money and power.
“Carats”AnodizedAluminum, Cubic Zirconia Diamonds. Edition of 3 (2019)
IIn his series, Precious Bars, Cohen hybridizes these cross-generational desiresandpresentsover-sizedobjects ofnostalgia, lustandyearning.
To do this, he parodies packaging of iconic chocolate bars that promise sugary treats, slightly altering their text to seduce with promise of wealth instead—Mr. Goodbar becomes Mr. Goldbar, KitKat turns into GoldRushandHeathchangestoWealth.Eachpackage istornpartiallyopen, revealingnotthechocolateofthe original but the power signifier of the pastiche: stacks ofmoneyorbarsofgold.
By appropriating such known identity systems and altering their meaning just enough without losing anchor to the original, Cohen creates a complicated series that simultaneously entices and entraps.Initially, thesesculpturesdrawin viewers with their sleek fabrication and evocation of childhood luxuries; however, upon deeper examination they pivot to lustful desires of maturation. Whether Cohen is critical of this redirection is unclear. Although he may conceal his own opinion regarding the spiritualefficacyofmoney, herevealsan evengreateropportunityforhisviewerto makethisdecisionforhimorherself.
