Description and suggestions of performance

A idéia principal da peça Bakatakabaka (para Trombone solo) é explorar o caráter polifônico do instrumento.

Porém, a polifonia aqui, não se refere ao conceito tradicional de “melodias simultâneas”, mas sim a uma polifonia de personagens. Dessa forma, a música se desenrola como uma peça de teatro em que o drama é criado pelas tensões, contrastes e relações entre personagens de diferentes humores.

O trombone deverá soar sempre “humano” e suas linhas melódicas devem se assemelhar a múltiplas inflexões da voz (sussurro, grito, fala, lamento, histeria, riso etc.) As indicações rítmicas e de tempo podem e devem ser executadas com flexibilidade. Da mesma forma, o uso de microtons, glissandos e notas extremas do instrumentos não necessitam uma perfeita intonação e devem salientar o caráter vocal das melodias. Todas essas características conferem à peça um caráter burlesco e uma verdadeira interpretação teatral do trombonista tornará o efeito dramático da peça ainda mais intenso.

Die wesentliche Idee des Stückes Bakatakabaka (für solo Posaune) ist, einen bestimmten polyphonen Aspekt des Instruments zu erkunden. Dennoch wird die Polyphonie nicht wie der traditionelle Begriff von „simultanen Melodien“ verwendet, sondern wie eine Polyphonie von ausgeprägten Charakteren. Deswegen entfaltet sich die Musik wie ein Theaterstück, dessen dramatischer Effekt aus Spannungen, Kontrasten und Beziehungen zwischen verschiedenen Charakterpersönlichkeiten entsteht.

Die Posaune soll immer „menschlich“ klingen und die melodischen Linien sollen stets den vielfältigen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten der Stimme ähneln (Geflüster, Schrei, Rede, Wehklage, Hysterie, Lachen usw.). Die notierten Rhythmen und Tempi können oft mit Flexibilität und Rubato gespielt werden. Die Mikrotöne, Glissandi und extrem hohe und tiefe Register benötigen keine präzise Intonation und sind nur wichtig, um die stimmliche Qualität der Melodien hervorzuheben. Alle oben erwähnten Eigenschaften gewähren der Musik eine burleske Charakteristik, und eine echte theatralische Ausführung des Posaunisten würde sicherlich den dramatischen Effekt der Musik bereichern.

The main idea of the piece Bakatakabaka (for solo trombone) is to explore a particular polyphonic characteristic of the Trombone. However, the polyphony is treated here not as the traditional concept of “simultaneous melodies”, but seen as an interplay of pronounced personages. Hence the music unfolds itself similarly to a theater piece, whereas its dramatic effects spring from tensions, contrasts and associations between characters of distinct humors.

The trombone must always sound “human” and its melodic lines should resemble the manifold inflections of the human voice (whisper, scream, speech, lament, hysteria, laugh etc.). All rhythmic and Tempo indications can and should be played as flexible as possible.

Likewise, the microtones, glissandi and extreme notes of the instrument do not need a perfect intonation and must only emphasize the vocal nature of the melodies. All the above-mentioned peculiarities confer to the piece a “burlesque” quality and a real theatrical interpretation is strongly advised to enrich its dramatic effect.

2) As indicações de surdina na partitura se referem à surdina PLUNGER. Uma surdina PIXIE deve ser sempre mantida no trombone durante a música.

2) All the mute indications refer to the PLUNGER mute.

A PIXIE mute should always be on the trombone during the piece.

Flechas ascendentes e descendentes nos acidentes indicam alterações microtonais nas notas.

Vorzeichen mit Pfeilen bezeichnen mikrotonal abweichende Noten.

Ascending and descending arrows at the accidentals indicate microtonal deviations on the notes.

Indicam respectivamente surdina em posição aberta e fechada. Uma linha após o símbolo indica a duração da surdina, assim como transição entre as posições.

Bezeichnen jeweils die offene und vollgedämpfte Position des Dämpfers. Eine Linie nach dem Symbol bezeichnet die Dauer des Dämpfers und ggf, graduellen Wechseln zwischen den Positionen.

Indicate respectively the “opened“ and “closed” positions of the mute. A line after the symbol indicates the duration of the mute, as well as the transition between the positions.

Indicam notas no registro mais grave possível.

O círculo branco sobre a nota indica pouquíssima pressão de lábio (como se buscando uma nota inatingivelmente grave), resultando em uma vibração de ar sem altura discernível.O círculo escuro indica uma altura perceptível, porém ainda com muito ruído de ar.

bezeichnen Noten in tiefster Lage. Der weiße, durchgestrichene Kreis über der Note bezeichnet geringen Lippendruck, so dass nur ein Luftflattern ohne wahrnehmbare Tonhöhe entsteht (als ob eine unerreichbar tiefe Note gespielt werden müsste). Der dunkle Kreis bezeichnet einen Ton mit wahrnehmbarer Tonhöhe, aber noch mit viel Luftgeräusch.

Indicate notes in the lowest possible register. The white, dashed circle above the note indicates very little lip pressure, so that only an air vibration without perceptible pitch is created (as if trying to play an unattainably low note). The dark circle indicates a perceptible pitch, but still with much air noise.

Indica uma nota no registro mais agudo possível. A não necessita perfeita intonação e sua escolha fica a critério do interprete.

bezeichnet eine Note in höchster Lage. Die Note muss keine präzise Tonhöhe haben und ist vom Instrumentalisten auszuwählen.

Indica que a surdina deve alternar rapidamente entre “aberta” e “fechada” por toda a duração da nota, resultando em múltiplos wahwah-wahs. Efeito semelhante a uma “risada”.

bezeichnet die schnelle Abwechslung zwischen offener und vollgedämpfter Position des Dämpfers. Ein regelmäßiger wah-wah-wah… Effekt soll für die ganze Tondauer erzeugt werden. “Lachen” Effekt.

Indicates fast alternations between the “opened” and “closed” positions of the mute, resulting in multiple “wah-wah-wahs” for the whole duration of the note. “Laugh”effect.

Indica um único abrir da surdina simulando um efeito de “Wah”.

bezeichnet ein einziges Öffnen des Dämpfers, was einen einzelnen Wah Effekt ergibt.

Indicates a single opening of the mute resulting in a “Wah” effect.

Indica um glissando de harmônicos ascendente começando pela nota indicada. A nota mais aguda do glissando fica a critério do interprete.

bezeichnet ein schnelles, aufsteigendes Obertonglissando ab der geschriebenen Note.

Die höchste Note des Glissandos ist vom Instrumentalisten auszuwählen.

Indicates an ascending glissando from harmonics beginning at the indicated note. The highest note of the glissando is left to the performers choice.

Indicam um curto glissando ascendente e descendente respectivamente.

bezeichnet ein kurzes, aufsteigendes bzw. absteigendes Glissando.

Indicates a short ascending and descending glissando respectively

Indica um efeito de ruído sem altura definida. O ruído pode ser criado dificultando-se a passagem de ar no instrumento através da pressão excessiva dos lábios, como se buscando uma nota inatingivelmente aguda. Outros ruídos podem ser adicionados ad lib. pelo intérprete (frullato com os lábios, tocar inspirando etc.)

Ein mögliches Geräusch kann durch einen exzessiven Lippendruck erzeugt werden, als ob eine unerreichbar hohe Note gespielt werden müsste.

Andere Geräusche können vom Instrumentalisten zusätzlich gespielt werden (Lippenflattern, Einatmen usw.)

Indicates a noise effect without definite pitch. The effect can be created dificulting the airflow through excessive lip pressure, as if trying to play an unattainably high note. Other noise effects can be added ad. Lib from the instrumentalist (lip frullato, inspiration etc.)

Som de ar. Para tornar o efeito mais audível, é recomendável pronunciar um “sssss..” durante a emissão do ar.

Luftton. Um den Effekt hörbarer zu machen, kann ein „sssss..." beim Luftblasen ausgesprochen werden.

Air sound. To make the effect more audible, a “sssss...” can be pronounced during the air emission.

Efeito “elefante”. Indicam glissandos feitos alternando-se a pressão de embocadura e movendo o slide de forma rápida e aleatória. A linha indica a direção e duração aproximada dos glissandos.

bezeichnet Glissandi mit unterschiedlichem Lippendruck plus einer zufälligen, schnellen Bewegung des Zuges. Die Linie zeigt die Richtung und Dauer der Glissandi. „Trompetender Elefant“ Effekt.

Indicates glissandi created alternating the lip-pressure and moving the slide fast and randomly. The line indicates approximately the duration and direction of the Glissando.

“Screaming Elephant”effect.

Efeito de “tosse” ou “engasgo”. Indicam curtos golpes de ar/ruído mantendo-se pouca pressão de embocadura.

„Husten“/„Würgen“ Effekt. Bezeichnet kurzes, starkes Luftgeräusch mit mittlerem Lippendruck.

“Cough”/”Choking” effect. Indicate short and strong air blows/noise keeping soft lip pressure.

Indicate a note in the highest possible register. The note does not need a perfect intonation and its choice is left to the performer.
