DORON LANGBERG ARTIST STATEMENT My work is about closeness — closeness to the surface of my paintings, to my subjects, and to the viewer. I paint my lovers, my friends, and the spaces and objects that surround me. In my process, I search for affinities between experiences that I’ve had and textures, marks, or color relationships. The various ways I touch the surface of the painting articulate my relationship to the image and shape its emotional narrative. I see my paintings as a conduit between the viewer and myself, through which my experiences become theirs. I focus on love and desire in my work because they are both fundamental human experiences, but also what mark me as different. The sense that the social structure I live in was never intended to include my form of sexuality compels me to communicate my experiences in a way that others could empathize with. By foregrounding color, gesture, and the tactility of paint, I try to create a connection with a viewer that speaks to the shared sensations of the bodies we inhabit rather than the social categories that constrict us. Seen as a whole, my practice engages different aspects of my life, ranging from the deeply personal to the everyday, creating textured emotional worlds that encompass a variety of experiences. Coming from a distinctively queer perspective, I want my work to speak of things we all share, such as friendship, intimacy, and pleasure.

GABY COLLINS-FERNANDEZ ARTIST STATEMENT My paintings are representative of an interest in the intersection of material and image. One reason I’ve been working with crushed velvet is that it is very optical -- it creates a field which at once refers to the use of the fabric in the world (and with crushed velvet, that goes often to garments, curtains, costumes) and also creates an optically charged surface which functions as a contrast to the gestural, textural, and textual space of the painted elements of the work. The other fabrics I use also tend toward a painterly, optical space through transparency and patterning. This is similar to how I choose the text for the work, as everyday words or phrases that feel spoken rather than written. Often the words are found in my day to day interactions with others, overheard within the urban clutter and movement of New York, and they seek to introduce a colloquial gesture in the paintings that point to both subject matter and the trace of a speaker. My experience with visual and emotional structure in life is that of overlay, of interfering structures of content, as in watching the variedly casual and intimate experiences of strangers in the city, or understanding from the visual cues of demeanor and appearance the huge differences of intention, desires, lifestyle, and opinion of a row of people sitting together on the subway. These fragments point to the systems they describe, but taken together one atop the other, they produce a density of emotion and meaning which I am interested in reproducing in the paintings.
