FASHION DESIGN

Head of department: Ilan Beja

Shenkar's Fashion Design Department is highly respected internationally, ranked sixth-best in the world by the Business of Fashion in 2017. Our graduates work with leading designers, establish their own companies, exhibit at prestigious events, and win numerous awards.

The department's curriculum encourages personal, original, and creative expression in all fashion fields. While remaining contemporary, students acquire a sensitivity to shifting trends and a familiarity with the local and international cultural heritage. Fashion design classes begin in the first year, with an initial introduction to the language of fashion. In the second, third, and fourth years, students are free to choose specialized classes: children's clothing, lingerie, swimwear, men's clothing, leisurewear, knitwear, jeans, bags, bridal apparel, shoes, eveningwear, and bespoke tailoring.

In addition to fashion design courses and theoretical and professional fashion studies, the department offers a variety of electives in art, embroidery, knitting, surface treatment, visual communication for fashion designers, journalism, creative writing, trade, portfolio preparation, and more.

The annual Shenkar Graduate Fashion Show is the highlight of our summer calendar, revealing spectacular garment designs and showcasing the wild creativity of young designers. Shenkar is the only fashion school in Israel invited to present a specially-curated runway show at the Tel Aviv Fashion Week, and the department uses this opportunity to drive social change. The 2019 show supported the LGBTQ community and advocated for greater awareness

FASHION DESIGN

Led by an academic team from Shenkar's Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Visual Communication departments, the interdisciplinary course "Good Intentions" was created with a single mission in mind: to explore inclusive design through meaningful collaborations focused on critical design thinking and impact. In cooperation with the Paralympics Committee, 24 fashion and textile students partnered to create customized garments with a user-specific outlook, catering to each of twelve athletes' particular conditions. Most of them will represent Israel in the 2021 Paralympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan

Based on casual wear syllabus by Orit Freilich, the course "Re-Starting Fashion" was born in 2014, when it became clear that fashion education had to confront the harsh realities of the fashion industry while maintaining its strong ties to it. These interactions reshape the critical impact fast fashion imposes on the planet by exploring intelligent solutions to the problem: upcycling, deconstructed designs, slow fashion, zero-waste, circularity, and more. The 2019 collaboration with multi-brand retailer Factory 54 and Dizengoff Mall in Tel Aviv (both of which house many fastfashion brands) culminated in a collection of repurposed designs. Some 100 unsold or damaged designer pieces by Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, and other brands were blended with textile waste and reshaped into new items

In the fourth year, students submit their theoretical work and final projects. The department utilizes its international connections by inviting guest lecturers to host artisan classes, offering internships at overseas companies, and inviting distinguished guests to the final project presentations and fashion show.

Moreover, each year the department participates in international competitions for young designers and collaborates with leading brands in Israel and abroad, helping students gain global exposure.

The Made to Last collection by graduate Natalie Tzur (2020) highlights the original menswear designs that became the signature of Shenkar's fashion design department. Seeking to improve the design process and move towards sustainable fashion, the collection presents a smart and long-lasting wardrobe. The collection's functionality derives from research of the shape, layout, and usability of packaging.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

The department’s dedicated team of practicing id_office@shenkar.ac.il professionals fosters an authentic approach to the field by teaching students to design original, quality products with significant added value that meets the diverse needs of the user, manufacturer, and market. By encouraging students to think broader, the faculty instill in them the need to design towards a more accessible, multifaceted world. The department’s projects confront a range of crucial design agendas such as inclusive, environmental, and speculative design. They range across many industries, including robotics, automotive, medical, wearables and recreation, to name but a few.

Founded in 2000, after the merger between Shenkar and Vital (an acclaimed design school in South Tel Aviv), this department inherited the proud legacy of Vital's industrial design department, run by Yaki Molcho and David Grossman since 1987. It has since celebrated over 25 years of outstanding instruction, and continues to thrive and gain international recognition. In 2018, Shenkar’s Industrial Design Department was ranked #9 in Europe and the Americas

by Red Dot Awards, and has won numerous accolades for exemplary student projects.

Graduate of 2019 Yaara Nusboim focuses on emotional design with her series of therapeutic wooden toys that allow children to cope with troubling experiences. Research done in collaboration with child psychologists allowed Yaara to correlate emotion with materiality. Each of six Alma dolls is linked to a different feeling: fear, pain, emptiness, love, anger, and safety. This way, the child can project their mental and emotional state through non-verbal, abstract play. The project was awarded first place for the Kids Design Award at the global exhibition Kind and Jugend in Cologne, Germany (2019), and won the Design that Educates Award (2020) in the product design category

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Ron Ferencz won first prize at the Red Dot Awards for his Vitreous Robot: a medical robot capable of remotely performing retinal surgery, allowing patients to receive treatment by the best practitioners regardless of their location

A particular strength of the department is its encouragement of the students’ personal and professional development, aimed to boost graduates towards a successful career in Israel and internationally.

Graduates go on to become designers at highly acclaimed companies, like Nendo, Dyson, and Marcel Wanders. This is achieved through internship programs, portfolio preparation, guest lectures, and workshop collaborations with the industry, including Hape, Adidas, and Volvo, among many. The department has also hosted a number of international design symposiums, beginning with the toy design conference “From Rags to Apps” now held three times since 2011. The department has since expanded to other fields by hosting “The Drive to Design” car conference of 2016, and the “MED Design” medical conference of 2019.

The Social Gas Mask, designed by graduate of 2014 Zlil Lazarovich, aims to combat the psychological struggles associated with emergency situations. With a large eye-window and an anthropomorphic design, the mask creates a more positive visual outcome, facilitating better communication with loved ones during critical scenarios

2017 Shenkar graduate Oren Geva won the Asia Design Prize in 2018 with her design, “2C3D”. This unique, inclusively-designed camera displays a tactile image for blind and visually impaired users, through realtime filming. Inspired by Pin Art toy, the camera screen has numerous 3D pixels that shift to form the image. When the user likes what they feel, they can click and save the 3D image to access it again later

Quite fittingly, the Department of Interior, Building and Environment Design is the only resident in the structure it occupies. The department utilizes this creative freedom to teach students how to unravel the potential in each and every space we inhabit. Renovation proposals are underway for the department building, envisioned by the students and tackling the important challenges of increasing space and capacity, providing shade and improving the cooling, maintaining harmony with nature, and moving towards a greener campus.

The curriculum of this forward-thinking department is shaped around designing spaces of the future by challenging the present, exploring the past, and speculating about what is to come. Aware of the added value that design can bring to technology, spaces of the future will incorporate layers of digitization; and the people knowing how to build what they plan will become increasingly significant in contributing to the spheres of Ikea and Alibaba. This is why, contrary to projections, there is a growing demand for interior designers with the digital and technical knowledge of constructing spaces, both physical and virtual.

Informed by the emergence of the experience economy, One Minute Architecture is a studio course for designing and creating shortterm immersive experiences. The students collaborate in groups to create a series of such experiences at 1:1 scale, from initial concepts to design development and installation

Studio 8 was founded by the student Keren Velvart at a time when physical space was embedded into virtual space, and human presence was reduced to 2D representations on screens. During this period, the ability to meet, create, and present together was suspended as humanity looked for a suitable replacement. The beating heart of the studio is a virtual gallery renewed every 24 hours based on collaborative exhibits. The web platform allows members to collaboratively arrange semi-virtual hybrid exhibits for the gallery’s next exhibition opening

INTERIOR, BUILDING & ENVIRONMENT DESIGN The department offers practical and theoretical programs that enable students to find their individual voices as designers. This includes art classes like painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and origami; Toolbox courses for boosting CAD skills; series of academic courses to expand the students’ cultural, theoretical, and methodological knowledge; creative writing classes; interdisciplinary courses; and much more. All of this in underpinned by live projects in collaboration with the industry. The students work on display spaces and stores, education facilities, leisure areas, work and residential spaces. They develop new materials, experiences, and ecological environments, in search of the next big thing that might just change the world.

Vehicles are already able to drive without human intervention (the autonomous vehicle), communicate with other vehicles (the linked vehicle), utilize electric energy (the electric vehicle), and serve to encourage and expand a culture of shared journeys. The Autonomous City studio explores new possibilities for designing the built and open space in the midst of a transportation revolution. In collaboration with Tel Hashomer Hospital, students find ways to utilize new technologies to address challenges and opportunities on the hospital campus

The Future Landscapes in Crisis studio examines the relationships between technology, production, ideology, society, and individuals.

Students are invited to critique existing manifestos and formulate new ones. Their task is to come up with ideas for reshaping the social order, addressing ecological and social crises, and re-examining human-nature spatial relations. Once the manifestos are complete, the students set out to design a futuristic space, implementing the ideas pertinent to their proposed society

JEWELRY DESIGN

The department's forward-looking vision is to bridge the gap between art, design, and industry. Design is a language that students must master, from basic structures to refined conceptual expressions, but learning it is no longer enough. The department also feels obligated to provide students with a firm understanding of the industry's operation, mass-production techniques, marketing methods, traditional metalwork skills, and advanced technologies.

The department believes that the dichotomy of "art" and "industry" is a forced one. Strategies of mass production and replication play a significant role in art, and the line between commercial and fine art is blurry at best. By using computer-aided technology in their work, jewelry design students have demonstrated that individuality can manifest in unexpected pieces. The most creative ideas often stem from exploring the aspects of manufacturing.

Eyewear is an important specialization and one of the department's strengths.

JEWELRY DESIGN

Nevertheless, there are techniques in goldsmithing—some dating back thousands of years—that have no replacement. A computer and a 3D printer are no substitute for a goldsmith's table. Therefore, the department makes sure to teach students the core principles of manual and traditional metalwork. The curriculum flows between individual and collaborative projects with industry-specific partners and more experimental workshops led by visual artists.

The department's student body is diverse, and inclusivity is a top priority.

Students are encouraged to express their individuality and explore their rich culture and heritage, and the department refrains from dictating a style or design agenda. The goal is to entice the students to explore the worlds of culture and design, providing them with the tools they need to ask questions and come to their own conclusions.

The popular Window Display Design course taught in the fourth year was formulated around the historical department store practice of creating a spectacle as a means of attracting shoppers. The displays, designed and produced in full scale by the students, change every few weeks and have become a unique feature of Shenkar lobbies. Israel's jewelry craftsmanship is greatly influenced by the rich Judaica tradition. While this knowledge is present in the department, it is addressed and challenged through materiality and contemporary jewelry concepts. For instance, Almog Tichnio's project, "Confluence" plays with modular design and unconventional materials (such as a combination of polymer and metal) to reveal or conceal ritualistic meaning. The collection of candlesticks and menorahs shifts between ceremonial and decorative depending on placement of the pieces

With a vast library of Swarovski crystals at their disposal, the department's students learn the art of blending precious and functional materials in a dedicated course. This experience informs student freedom in developing unusual yet glamorous combinations, as demonstrated in Nahum Matat's graduate collection "Rhythm Jewelry."

TEXTILE DESIGN

On a mission to revive the local textile industry, the Textile Design Department is redefining the territory by expanding activities to new fields. The department encourages students to learn by observing the professional world that lies outside academic walls, connecting with current affairs, gaining an awareness of trends and contemporary cultural discourse, and incorporating the historical context into their worldview. The program is supported by a diverse set of traditional and innovative workshops that regularly upgrade their equipment and technologies to support the evolving curriculum. This includes flatbed and seamless industrial knitting, nonwovens, weaving, silkscreen printing, 3D printing, and CAD resources that facilitate the development of advanced and novel materials.

Given recent technological advancements and the dramatic shift towards remote working, the department recognizes that digital literacy is of paramount importance. The curriculum caters to this, teaching skills in line with Industry 4.0 and focusing on production and marketing processes, optimization, consumption values, and the precise characterization of textiles. Students learn a breadth of digital processes in programming, sampling and imaging files for knitting and weaving software; applications for smart textiles and electronic textile systems; and integrations of 3D printing and laser cutting technologies.

In addition to traditional fashion and lifestyle industries, this caters to the production of technical textiles for defense industries, active-wear, extreme clothing, and sportswear—all currently in demand in the Israeli market.

As the only program of its kind in Israel, Shenkar's Textile Design department is a real gem and a key participant in the annual graduation exhibition. In her 2017 graduation project "Museum of Empirical Values" (in the photo), Adva Kremer ironically employed her excellent textile software skills to reflect—in jacquard—on the value of art in the age of digital reproduction. The student picked the world's most famous artworks featured on Google Trends and, after manipulating them to emphasize the pixel grid, weaved them in the form of tapestries

TEXTILE DESIGN

Influenced by the traditional weaving crafts of the Bauhaus movement, Lee Kidron's woven fabrics (2019) were designed to outline the home space in a composition of line and color, responding to the forecasted SS19 color palette.

The project questions the place of textiles in everyday life, considering the encounter between people and domestic textile objects: wallpaper, curtains, carpets, and tablecloths

Textile designers are claiming the field of soft goods thanks to their technical abilities in designing an end product. This spans a range of objects, from toys and wellbeing products to fashion accessories: hats, bags, masks, shoes, and more. Graduate of 2017 Noga Sapir combined her enthusiasm for neuroscience with her love for textile design in her project "Reflect "—a therapeutic aid offering biofeedback through a soft, multisensory stimulant

The department has its sights set on the future; it is molding the next generation of textile designers into critical, environmentally conscious individuals who think about their impact on the planet.

Students are applying their in-depth knowledge of textiles mindfully.

When developing new materials, they consider factors like ecological impact and circular economy. Recent projects have seen students explore bio textiles, textile waste management, and the recycling of composite materials for soft architecture, soft structures, and acoustic cladding

A graduate from the class of 2020, Neta Getta built a series of experimental fabrics that connected the worlds of architecture and textiles through construction and weaving. "About Grid" focuses on geometric structures that embody an idea, plan, and action. The mix of concrete and textiles borrows shapes from the language of architecture, considering material properties: hardness and softness, movement and stasis, flexibility, geometry, and spatial location

VISUAL COMMUNICATION Head of department: Asaf Hanuka

Visual communication is omnipresent. It fills both public and private spheres, into which the designer contributes visual codes and conventions.

The core of this activity is shaping our visual environment: products, books, catalogs, street signs, TV screens, cell phones, computer screens, and more.

Departments and facilities

While visual communication's domain used to be limited to two dimensions, it has now spread into the third and fourth. Areas of study in visual communication have expanded to include graphic design, typography, lettering and font design, branding and advertising studies, illustration, animation and film, motion design for screens and for the web, video game design, packaging design, physical and digital products, 3D design for physical and virtual spaces, and more. All of these disciplines are represented at the Visual Communication Department, the largest academic program at the Design Faculty.

A new tradition at the department, the annual public exhibition moves to a different venue in the city each year. The participating students gain exposure and experience taking part in a live exhibition outside of Shenkar. The 2019 edition "Design Sins" questioned the morality of good design by reflecting on frowned-upon themes—elitism, escapism, populism, and provocation. The exhibition concept was developed over a semester-long course and involved an imaginary protagonist, a fictional curator figure through whom the students critiqued their own works

Many of the department's final projects demonstrate an awareness of three-dimensionality and mixed media as tools for communication. Graduate of 2019 Mika Aharoni embraces this in her project "A Friend In Need Is a Friend Indeed." She explains: "in the present age, a person's need for closeness and empathy is growing, but one's ability to produce such moments is impaired." The project presents a series of objects placed in an urban space, seeking to provide a solution to these needs. In practice, the result is an ironic, puzzling experience of absence. Aharoni uses exaggeration to show that modern culture offers Band-Aid solutions to many human problems

VISUAL COMMUNICATION

The work of Liad Shadmi is a classic visual communication design outcome and a beautifully executed end product.

Inspired by the local cityscape, he created the book "Store Closing, Everything Must Go" (2019), an atlas of vernacular design found in Israeli store signage. The extensive visual research of more than 2000 signs from businesses large and small, documented in 14 different cities throughout the country, maps the trends and patterns of the Israeli visual aesthetic manifested in different socio-economic clusters and local demographics

The first two years of study are devoted to the fundamentals and first steps in design processes, and the last two years are dedicated to specializations. Illustration and Animation students start their specializations earlier, in their second year, to master advanced drawing and visual storytelling skills.

The new Digital Product Design track, launched in 2019, requires students to start developing a unique professional outlook from the very beginning. Digital product design deals with user experience and user interface design (UX/UI) and requires a holistic view of digital media. Students gain skills in characterization, coding, interaction design, graphic design and technology, in line with the high-tech industry's current practices—from websites, applications, digital products, and smart objects (IoT), to the next big start-up.

The illustration program at Shenkar was founded in 2000 by internationally acclaimed illustrator, novelist, and graphic artist Yirmi Pinkus, who has since shaped around him a treasured faculty of Israeli Illustrators, including Asaf Hanuka, Batia Kolton, and Itzik Rennert. Since 2011, the program has been led by illustrator and animator Itamar Daube. Along with other faculty members, Daube regularly contributes to newspapers in Israel and abroad, providing an ironic perspective on the latest social and political affairs. MASTER’S DEGREE IN DESIGN

The M.Des. degree track is a post-professional graduate program for students with an undergraduate degree in design, engineering, and adjacent disciplines. Design is a crucial strategic tool in the 21st century, fostering innovation and change on all levels of society. This means that not only must design practitioners be well-versed in the design methodologies, they must also understand the business reality, new technologies such as artificial intelligence, in-depth research tools, the ethical implications of their work, and the impact of design practice on society and the environment. The twoyear program offers an advanced design education that supports both practice and theory, deepening the students' understanding of the uses and misuses of design.

Graduate of 2019, Nimrod Jack Eliezer presented his final project PU022 in the State of Extremes Exhibition at Design Museum Holon (December 2019 - May 2020). In response to the increasing numbers of school shootings in the US that reinforce a toxic teen culture of gun ownership, Eliezer designed a prototype pistol targeted towards the youth, with safety features including fingerprint activation, laser sight, video function and a parental lock. This speculative project can be viewed as a critique of the social order from which it arises, highlighting the lax attitude of the design world, which often ignores the potential harm of such products

In this three-part design investigation, Ofer Asaf (graduate of 2020) raises a series of questions concerning the relationship between humans and non-human agencies, examining the thresholds between man, technology and the plant kingdom. Sensitively dealing with concepts of aesthetics, communication and history, these 'three etudes' invite viewers to embark upon a joint cognitive process—with the trees, rather than about them

Each studio course is built around a central theme that students respond to. The evolving syllabi deal with a wide range of topical challenges, from today's pressing issues to daring speculative scenarios: alternative energy sources, accelerated urbanization, nutrition forecasts, substitute protein sources, trends in education, and more.

The elective courses allow students to join existing projects or initiate projects of their own across research centers at Shenkar and affiliated global programs, such as Sugar, in various fields, including innovation in textiles, environmental thinking, interaction design, and the development of future learning environments. In these courses, the students tackle practical challenges and acquire experience working with organizations and companies. The framework includes practical studio courses, theoretical lessons in design research, workshops, and classes on design management and entrepreneurship.

Within the M.Des. program, graduates from engineering and other non-design disciplines are provided with dedicated design classes under a unique track. This track is intended to equip non-designers with an understanding of design methodologies, practice and theory before joining the general program class, to be able to co-create interdisciplinary projects and share a common understanding of challenges facing multidisciplinary teams. Through this process, individual students and project teams, guided by the faculty, learn how to develop coping strategies.

MASTER’S DEGREE IN DIGITAL GAME DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

Digital games are changing the way we interact with the world and experience stories, opening up rapidly-developing industry with a huge market. The field became a driving force for the development of new tools in digital media, and is a trend-setter in contemporary digital and technological cultures. Going beyond the entertainment industry with the concept of “purposeful gaming�, it has even invigorated the sphere of education with games now serving as a tool for engagement and learning.

What started out as an external course at Shenkar has now evolved into an academic M.Des. program - the first of its kind in Israel to be approved by the Council for Higher Education. The curriculum was built with the understanding that the diverse environment of digital games requires a common language for interdisciplinary research and work in collaborative teams, along with sufficient training in currently available programming technologies. The gaming lab is situated in the recently renovated Kadar center and boasts a contemporary computer suite kitted out with top of the line software and technology.

The course also facilitates unique collaborations with MIT, Massachusetts, and the gaming industry, enabling students to explore the breadth of gaming possibilities worldwide.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ART SCHOOLÂ

As visuals occupy an ever-more-central place in our lives and reality becomes more and more multicultural and conflicted, the status of art as a first-rate tool for self-expression, construction of collective identities, and social criticism is intensifying. To train artists to deal with the complex challenges of contemporary culture, the school offers a diversified and integrative learning environment that expresses all the areas of knowledge and creativity relevant to today's artist - from manual studio work to the digital world and theoretical studies. The school provides its students with a broad spectrum of expression and thinking patterns while encouraging the mapping of memories and experiences. The goal is to help students develop personal perspectives and express them in a host of mediums: painting, sculpture, photography, video, drawing, print, and more.

The heart of the learning experience at the school is the multidisciplinary seminar, a group forum where students are encouraged to engage in critical and theoretical discussions, effectively becoming a learning community. During the seminar, students engage in problem-solving and implement their knowledge in diverse fields. The seminar discussions revolve around an annually changing thematic axis and focus on a range of issues—both local and global, both historical and contemporary.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ART SCHOOL

The BrainArt exhibition at Tel Aviv University was the culmination of a semester-long collaborative workshop between students of the Multidisciplinary Art School and Sagol School of Neuroscience. The shared experience dealt with the similarities and differences between the two worlds, with the scientists exploring sculpting, drawing, and other creative mediums in the school’s workshops while the artists spent time in the labs and delved into themes of memory, learning, emotions, brain structure, and the perception of beauty

Since the establishment of the school in 2008, many of its graduate exhibitions have received praise from professional media and individuals alike. Hosted in the gloriously historic space of the Elite Building, the exhibition draws many visitors each year, with some traveling great distances to see the diverse projects. Graduates swiftly integrate into the art field in Israel and around the world, presenting impressive solo and group projects.

As part of a challenging cross-cultural exchange with the French school ENSAPC (2018), students reflected on the idea of the “Pilgrim-Flaneur”, the theme confronting the social and political realities facing artists today. While the city of Paris contributed to the theory and practice of modern urbanity, the city of Jerusalem has become a place of pilgrimage for many cultures and religions - a status influenced and constructed by the people as well as the state.

These tensions of movement, from secular-individualist to sanctified, collective and structured, forced students to find personal paths through all of these complexities. For the resulting collective exhibition, students had to tackle questions pertinent to the postmodern world and formulate a relevant artistic position in a chosen medium

THE UNIT FOR HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

As the central driver for theoretical studies at Shenkar, the Unit for History and Philosophy of Art, Design and Technology provides the contextual foundations and conceptual rigor for advancing studio practice and research.

The unit delivers a rich and tailored curriculum to the Faculty of Design and the School of Multidisciplinary Art, and offers select programs at the Faculty of Engineering. Its modular courses offer a broad view of history and address social, commercial and cultural aspects. Subjects covered in the curriculum include the history and theory of Israeli art, design, and architecture; aesthetics; critical theory; film studies; software and game studies; media philosophy; the history and philosophy of technology; ecophilosophy, and more. The aim is to equip students with the knowledge and tools needed to critically evaluate relevant theories or ideas pertaining to their practice.

Alongside this, the unit conducts events to engage with students and the wider academic audience, locally and internationally. Through academic conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, publications, and lecture series the unit keeps the discourse active. The most recent project underway is a 1300-paged book series, collated in five themed anthologies: Victorian, European & Persian design; Architecture & Urban Planning; Typography & Graphic Design; Industrial Design; and a monograph dedicated to the Jewish design philosopher Vilem Flusser.

Focus of the 2015 conference organized by the unit, visual hybrids are images consisting of two or more parts belonging to different categories. These hybrids are difficult to perceive, catalog, and conceptualize, but they have accompanied human visual culture from ancient times to the present day, and represent a canonical phenomenon in art, society, religions, and languages

Chemical Engineering is the study of transforming raw materials into useful products, processes, and services. During their time at Shenkar, students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge during design and laboratory practice, developing concepts and prototypes in a semi-industrial facility while keeping in mind mass-production and marketing.

In order to achieve this, the multidisciplinary curriculum equips students with the fundamental concepts of general science (chemistry and physics), material science, computer science, mathematics, and engineering, along with an introduction to technical skills and applications. The courses cover industry-pertinent research areas, including transport phenomena of momentum, heat and mass, nanomaterials, separation processes, biotechnology, materials for the construction industry, clean energy, environmental aspects, pharma, cosmetics and much more.

This is mutually beneficial in establishing connections with partners who provide students with invaluable applied knowledge and hands-on experience. Our affiliations facilitate factory visits, collaborations, scholarships, support for final projects, and potential employment opportunities. Current affiliates include: Israel Chemicals, Mekorot (the Israeli Water Company), Carmel Olefins, the Israeli Oil Refineries, Haifa Chemicals, Intercosma, AHAVA (Dead Sea Minerals) and more. At the end of studies, the curriculum has prepared students towards a career in a wide range of industries. These include: classic chemical, petrochemical, fertilizer and pest control; food industry; polymers and plastics production; aviation; defense; hitech; energy recourses; pharmaceutics; cosmetics; medicine; textiles manufacturing; bio-technology; government offices, and so on. Faculty member Moshe Favelukis specializes in the study of transport phenomena (fluid mechanics, heat transfer and mass transfer) with bubbles, drops and particles. In the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries, compound drops are used to protect and maintain important substances within the inner drop, which can then be released in a controlled form into the external fluid. The work addresses the importance of the nonlinear intensity of the flow in the deformation, breakup, and mass transfer of compound drops

The biennial Solar Decathlon Competition of 2013 (an initiative of the US Department of Energy) gave students a chance to participate in the design and construction of a solar-powered, prefabricated home to be displayed in China. The project team, led by architects Dr. Joseph Cory and Chen Shalita, enabled a collaboration with participants from three other Israeli institutions. Shenkar representatives Shir Nozik and Alon Shaul produced a study entitled “Integrated Heat Storage with Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for Green Building Applications�, and the final design received high scores, reaching second place in the architecture competition, and fourth place overall

With electronics so deeply ingrained into our culture, qualified electronic engineers with flexible interdisciplinary skills are in high demand. The department aims to provide students with the necessary blend of core disciplinary EE knowledge and skills, complemented by interdisciplinary elements important in contemporary engineering.

The curriculum has four objectives: providing the students with a deep and thorough understanding of basic sciences (mathematics, physics, and computers), developing their engineering and management skills; familiarizing them with cutting-edge technological advancements and communication devices, nurturing their creative abilities, and encouraging business-oriented and entrepreneurial thinking. In order to accommodate this, each student is provided with a computerized workstation and granted access to well-equipped laboratories, complete with a sophisticated light studio.

Created in collaboration with Motorola, the LGRS (Lip Gesture Recognition System) was designed for reading lips using image-processing and computer vision. The system is wearable and portable, providing a solution for soldiers in the field

ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

As students progress through the courses, the third year of study opens up four majors:

VLSI, chip design, and microelectronics - a specialization in components integrated into every electronic system, be they communication devices, screens, home appliances, or autonomous vehicles;

Lighting engineering - functional and efficient lighting design for indoor and outdoor sites;

IOT systems - courses on data communication networks, sensors and actuators, IOT networks, RF engineering, and big data processing;

Robotic systems - including communication, control, image- processing, machine learning, sensing, and actuation.

Holistically, the curriculum enriches students with broad knowledge applicable to many industrial sectors, making them invaluable in hi-tech or any organization that relies on technology. The students can explore topics such as satellites, cellular and computer communication, sophisticated weapons systems, vehicle control systems, sound and imaging systems, the internet of things (IoT), small chips, smart homes, smart cities, and more.

Electrical engineering student Meital Dahan collaborated with fashion design student Ori Schreiber on this interdisciplinary project. The students created special costumes that track the movement of dancers, using smart textiles with integrated motion sensors. The data generated by the movement was then processed into a soundtrack, to which the dancers performed

The department was established in 1995 by the Plastics and Rubber Manufacturers Society as a national center for education and training for the polymers and plastics industry. As such, it has strong ties with the polymers and plastics companies, as well as all the relevant industries and entities linked with polymer materials technology in Israel today, who support students during their studies and employs them after they graduate. At present, it is the only department in Israel qualifying polymer materials engineers for B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in research, making it an essential asset to the country.

Industries which are based on polymers and plastics technologies, have been the foundation for advanced commercial enterprises that are constantly developing and innovating. In Israel, the plastics industry exports directly more than 4.5 billion dollars of products in addition to supplying the local market with a further 2 billion dollars of goods. Alongside this, the prolific high-tech industries integrate polymer materials, plastic components and systems into their products, which further contributes billions to the economy.

POLYMER MATERIALS ENGINEERING

With this in mind, the department strives to pass on the required knowledge and skillset to bring up highly adept graduates, equipped to enter into a multi-disciplinary profession and carry out advanced research and development in the relevant industries. Offering two major clusters in Advanced Polymer Material Science and Advanced Technologies in Polymer Engineering, graduates can expect to find themselves entering design and management positions in aviation, microelectronics, medicine, defense, nanotechnology, agriculture, lacquers and adhesives, DIY products, packaging, building, automotive, medical, consumer products and hi-tech industries.

All of this is ensured by quality teaching, with faculty members stemming from scientific backgrounds in the polymers field, trained at leading research facilities and having gained significant experience in the industry. Most of faculty are consultants for advanced projects in Israel and abroad, and continue to contribute to many significant projects whilst teaching. They also bring with them important connections that enable the department to engage with universities in the USA, offering PhD programs and faculty exchange programs, including The University of Massachusetts at Lowell, the Polymers Department at the Akron University and the Materials Department at Penn State University.

The M.Sc. research of Almog Uziel (2020) investigates a new method of administering whole extracts derived from the cannabis plant, using technology for printing of microspheres from a polymer melt. This approach provides controlled and long-term release of the active components of the plant, remaining in the blood for a prolonged period of time and inducing a therapeutic effect. The project was advised by Dr. Dan Levitus, who is researching the effect of cannabis-based drugs for the treatment of pediatric epilepsy

Yoav Dan’s M.Sc. research project (2020) developed an innovative method of transforming cellulose from a substance that absorbs fluids, to one that enables selective separation between water and oil. This new technology makes it possible to convert cotton textiles, made of cellulose, into surfaces that can assist in the selective absorption of oil spills at sea to prevent an ecological catastrophe. The project was supported by Dr. Elizabeth Amir, whose extensive research into water-oil separation spans many diverse, practical applications

The School offers a nationally-leading curriculum on the operation of complex systems, service organizations, and industrial plants.

Its programs cover the human resources, equipment, data, and materials needed to manufacture a quality product or service. While the undergraduate curriculum tackles the managerial, economic, and strategic aspects of local and international companies, the graduate program offers an in-depth understanding of digital, organizational, and enterprise innovation management.

Students are provided with the up-to-date practical tools and equipment currently used in companies. The computer labs facilitate Big Data research for implementing digital transformations in the spirit of Industry 4.0. The laboratories are equipped with Arena simulation software, Advanced ERP operations management systems, and CRM software for customer relationship management. Further to this, the computer-integrated manufacturing laboratory (CIM) enables the study of digital production means such as robotics, CNC machines, automatic conveyance and storage systems, computer vision systems, and more.

SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING & MANAGEMENT

The school regularly hosts diverse events, in which students gain hands-on experience and collaborate not only with companies, but with individuals and communities. The school is an academic partner of Young Entrepreneurs Israel, an association that enables students to mentor and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs as part of their academic studies. The one-year course initiates the formation of a minicooperative, with our students teaching their mentees what it takes to design and manufacture a unique product or service.

The biggest academic unit at Shenkar, the school has over 1000 students in its undergraduate program, and is rapidly developing since the commencement of the graduate program in 2015

The National Hackathon is a collaboration between students and industry officials from all over the country, with particular encouragement for female student involvement.

It gives students the opportunity to confront burning issues in the field and apply their engineering, business, and design thinking in real time during a 36-hour ‘sprint’.

The school has already hosted 3 successful hackathons with participants from Ebay, Intel, Clalit Health Services, Ira Foundation, Mekorot, Optimove, M51, and others

Every successful hi-tech company has a sophisticated and complex software system at its core. The software engineering department at Shenkar aims to educate and train the future generation of leading developers and entrepreneurs to support such industries. In line with this concept, the department offers thorough and in-depth studies in the areas of computer science and software engineering, alongside professional practice and hands-on experience in innovation, management, and product design.

By the end of their studies, students gain a comprehensive understanding of a software system’s lifespan. They are able to consider the initial design parameters, proceed to implementation and testing, and maintain or modify to increase longevity. This is ensured through the department’s extensive curriculum, which covers the basics of computing, software engineering, systems analysis, application design, web applications, multimedia, computer-embedded system design, computer system management, smart systems, security (cyber), cloud computing, machine learning, and much more.

We live in a reality rife with military conflicts, and countries are constantly enriching their combat tools and cyber capabilities to demonstrate strength. This makes the warfare more difficult to manage and control, and any minor scenario can quickly escalate to a national disaster that risks human lives.

Project ARMS by the department graduates comes to address chaos and loss through an innovative system for managing forces in the field and providing communication capabilities under uncommon extreme conditions. The project engineers Ben Reich, Dor Malka, Tal Chausho Gur-Arie, and Igal Tsesis have served in IDF combat units, and were able to identify the needs of a military combat unit and provide a focused, high-quality solution

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING The department aims to support students in their personal and professional development by exposing them to the global high-tech industry and advanced media.

This is achieved through lectures by notable guests from the industry and collaborative projects with leading companies including Wix, Red-Id, and Partner Communications Company.

The software department is the only engineering department to participate in Shenkar’s annual graduate exhibition. Displaying many exceptional interdisciplinary projects in app design and prototyping, the students tackle real-life problems and meet consumer needs. In the graduate exhibition of 2019, students presented MatayZe - digital assistant based on Amazon’s Alexa, able to answer the user’s questions and provide specific information using speech-recognition and text-to-speech technology. In this case, MatayZe enabled visitors to navigate the exhibit at the Software Engineering Department, answering in which room and on which floor a particular project was presented, where a tour was taking place or where the information and registration stands were.

Graduation project Open Car Recognition Snapshot (OCRS): Research Detection Changes in Pictures by Asaf Louk, Gal Argov Sofer, Ran Shushan. The system automatically detects of changes in the outer casing of a vehicle when it is returned at the end of the rental period, compared to its condition when delivered to the customer. The system core is based on a variety of image processing techniques. System benefits include reliable identification of changes, manpower savings, an accurate record of rental history, and more

In collaboration with Partner Communications Company, students Mahmud Mahamid, Balia Yassin, and Ziad Hirallah developed an interactive TV platform that allows content providers to manage live TV events, enhancing the customer’s overall experience. This TV/mobile system enables the customer to order pizza through interactive advertisements, vote for contestants on Big Brother, or start a chat with another user all from the comfort of their living room

Shenkar strongly believes in values of interdisciplinary education: project-based learning, a multitude of approaches, collaborative spirit and social engagement.

Recent efforts sought to boost synergy between the diverse fields of expertise that shape the Faculty of Design and the Faculty of Engineering.

The elements of interdisciplinary education are integrated at various stages throughout the whole curriculum. In the first year of training, future engineers are offered a general design course, in order to incorporate design considerations early on in their professional careers. In the following year, Shenkar students of all specializations get the opportunity to meet and work together on real-life solutions during the JamWeek marathon. In the third year of studies, a more in-depth interdisciplinary learning experience is provided through semester-long courses focusing on contemporary research concepts and paradigms. This openended, experimental learning results in highly original, cross-departmental, collaborative projects, some of which then mature into final projects. In addition, Shenkar is part of several academic networks, including Design Factory and Sugar, that encourage innovative and interdisciplinary learning across the globe.

DESIGN FACTORY In 2019, Shenkar has joined the Design Factory Network, a partnership of innovation hubs in universities and research organizations, dedicated to enabling experimental design process. The idea originated during a faculty visit to the Design Factory’s Bootcamp at the Aalto University, and only 6 months later, following a thorough application process, Shenkar has launched Design Factory #28 at the very heart of its campus.

Our hub has a few impressive heavy-weights at its disposal: the Keter Plastics Digital Prototyping Center, the Israel Plastic & Rubber Center, the Kadar Center for Design & Technology and the Kadar Game Design & Development Lab. Together, these entities aim to advance digital and technological education by fostering a collaborative culture of making - a culture where design meets engineering.

INTERDISCIPLINARITY

JAMWEEK JamWeek - is an annual event that brings together the diverse faculty and student communities of Shenkar in a week-long interdisciplinary session. About 700 students take part in 25-30 dedicated workshops, each led by design and engineering faculty working in tandem, as well as guest instructors and partner organizations. Jamweek runs for 4 days, by the end of which the mixed student teams arrive at the formulation of a tangible product or workable idea. What began as an experiment in 2012, over the past years has grown into the main interdisciplinary education event at Shenkar.

Each year Jamweek picks a general concept that informs the topic of every workshop in the spirit of positive social change. In 2019, Jamweek #8 has dealt with the subject of accessibility, inspired by the Access+Ability exhibition by Cara McCarthy at the Cooper Hewitt museum. The workshops encouraged creative responses to the issues of uneven access to resources and diverging human abilities in various contexts. The impact was such that the discussion acceded the Jamweek format and guided Shenkar development for the whole year, helping to put in place many support mechanisms - from accessible website to wheelchair lifts across campus.

TRANS COURSES Continuing the interdisciplinary axis is a set of semester-long courses as part of Shenkar's third year curriculum. These courses place a strong emphasis on exploration of specific concepts, prioritizing research and ideas over skill-based learning. In order to make it possible to engage students at advanced stages of their specializations, an entire day of the study week is dedicated to these in-depth, interdisciplinary, laboratory styles classes, allowing students the freedom to experiment and explore new territories. To keep up with the shifting global trends, the courses change every year, introducing new teachers and topics of relevance. This concerns a spectrum of themes from Artificial Intelligence and loneliness, to nature as culture and designing for children in the digital age.

The course "Visual Narratives of Nations" critically examined the gap between socio-cultural perceptions of countries by the outside observers and the fellowmen, using a research by Wharton on criteria for "Best Countries" global ranking. Among the expected and objective parameters of "wellness", the model argues that symbolic and visual branding of countries has a big impact. The students coming from various disciplines of Shenkar examined how multi-system, cross-platform design can be an important media tool and play a significant role in a country narrative, while placing themselves at a critical distance to conventional "sugar-coating" branding

The Department of External Studies and Continuing Education maintains the original ethos of Shenkar, founded as a vocational school, being a link between industry and academia. Today, when professional milieus are many, and there is more than one career in a person’s lifetime, the department tracks and examines changes in both industry and cultural discourse to develop new and up-to date content.

The department initiates and runs dozens of curricula and courses, ranging from short courses of several weeks to programs lasting several months. With a principle of life-long learning, these courses are designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of background, age, or academic achievements. As such, individuals are able to expand and develop their capabilities, entering professional fields and occupations that they had always dreamt about. Some of Shenkar’s most innovative academic programs have originated as short-term studies at this department.

ARTS IN THE COMMUNIT Y Opened in 2013, the Creative Entrepreneurship Incubator program was developed and directed by Adi Yekutieli, founder of the Association for Arts in the Community, Israel. In collaboration with the Rothschild Caesarea Foundation, the program trains social entrepreneurs - from a diverse spectrum of Israeli society - to use the language of visual and performing arts as tools to launch community projects involving thousands of people. One such project ‘Grandma Knits Me A Playground’, engaged with an increasingly vulnerable category - the elderly - for an inclusive activity adapted to suit diverse motor and cognitive capabilities. Residents of the Mishan Fichman (care home for the elderly) embraced communal knitting, towards the creation of a colorful, modular and interactive adventure playground for the visiting family and children.

To address the challenges of loneliness in the later years of life, program participants and graduates developed several groundbreaking models in the field of geriatrics

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND EXTERNAL STUDIES

A set of elementary metal connectors by Ani Dwilansky, turning any acidic vegetable into a DIY robot

CURATORIAL DESIGN STUDIES This international program is designed for the next generation of curators, researchers and producers, fostering cultural entrepreneurs in the field of design. Headed by renowned professional Galit Gaon, the track focusses on major global themes in museum work. Providing a theoretical background and practical tools, the program aims to integrate students into the cultural field and lead it.

The studies provide participants with expertise in instigating, developing and setting up exhibitions in temporary, virtual or real spaces, both private and public, in Israel or abroad, at Design Weeks, museums, galleries and trade fairs. This is enriched by regular workshops with international guest lecturers: Agnieszka Jacobson (School of Form, Warsaw), Daniel Charny (From Now On, London), Marcel Bencik (Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Bratislava) and Maria Cristina Didero (independent journalist).

TOY INVENTION In collaboration with one of the most influential toy company in the world, Spin Master, Shenkar offers an intensive oneyear long study track that immerses students into the market of gameplay and entertainment categories across a range of media, founded and led by Tal Schreiber. Facilitating this peculiar study field is a newly renovated workspace stocked with traditional and contemporary toys as well as prototyping equipment. Toy inventors demonstrating academic excellence and valid proposals have the option to continue to the Toy Incubator track, working with a development budget and professional guidance from Spin Master. Stemming from this success, similar programs have been opened at Ryerson University and OCAD (Canada).

Dean of Students is the unit responsible for the wellbeing of students over the course of their studies. It serves to assist and accommodate student needs, finding solutions for personal, financial and social issues, and acts as a bridge between the academy and the students.

The Dean handles diverse issues of day to day life with empathy and discretion, offering support during challenging personal issues, and acting as the ombudsman to those who feel that they have been discriminated against, treated unfairly, or had their rights violated by a member of Shenkar’s team.

Every year, students who show outstanding achievements in their studies, attain high grades and create exemplary projects are granted certificates of excellence and awards. As head of the Awards Committee, the Dean of Students determines who is eligible and under what criteria. Similarly chairing the Scholarship Committee, the unit implements the deanship's policy on Welfare and Financial Aid.

At Shenkar, students have their own agency, learning through activities that are meaningful and relevant to each individual, driven by their interests, and often selfinitiated with appropriate guidance from teachers. The Students as Partners (SaP) approach, thereby creates a voice for students to shape their own learning, and supporting this is the Student Union, who work in close dialogue with Shenkar's administration and are considered in every decision-making process.

The Shenkar Student Union is part of the National Student Union, a registered and independent non-profit organization, and the official body representing all the students of the college. The division aims to be an active resource: safeguarding student interests, while providing solutions in the areas of social welfare, social involvement and academic assistance. As such, students view them as the driving force that transforms the fabric of social, cultural and academic life at Shenkar.

HILA - STUDENT ADVANCEMENT CENTER

College years are one of the most significant turning points in the life of young adults, opening vast opportunities for growth, development, and self-fulfillment. For some however, this period also entails challenges and obstacles due to personal needs and life circumstances. HILA Center is devoted to providing equal opportunity and accessibility to students with learning disabilities and ADHD, physical, sensory and mental disabilities, as well as students with language and cultural barriers.

HILA Center and its staff of specialists, offer ongoing personal consultation and support, learning assistance and accommodations, peer tutoring, development and enrichment workshops for academic and life skills, as well as assistive technologies. The center mediates and advocates students' specific needs, while promoting an accessible and inclusive campus environment.

The event series “Senses: Hearing and Seeing and Everything in the Middle� (2016), opened up a window into the world of those with a visual or hearing impairment. HILA collaborated with the organization "Ofek Liyaldenu" for an immersive experience of daily activities without the sense of sight, addressing the use of compensatory senses such as touch or auditory translation of visual information

MA'AN - THE UNIT FOR STUDENTS FROM ARAB SOCIETY

Through the activities carried out by Ma’an, Shenkar is spearheading the vision of increasing the accessibility of higher education to the entire spectrum of Arab society.

The unit operates under the Academic Secretariat and within the HILA Student Advancement Center. The objective of the unit is to raise awareness of the disciplines studied at Shenkar, lay the foundation for a smooth transition for new students, provide social and academic guidance, and create a shared space for dialogue and reciprocity. The unit has ties with organizations outside of Shenkar, such as Arab municipalities and nonprofits.

This includes the “Merhav Me'afsher” [Enabling Space] project and the Nitzanei Shenkar [Shenkar Buds] project with the Taybeh municipality; as well as an upcoming project with the municipalities of Arara and Nachaf.

In collaboration with HILA, the unit offers assistance throughout the students’ time at Shenkar, with tutoring, social mentorship, social activities, and emotional and mental support. To prepare students for professional life after graduation, Ma’an provides occupational guidance through the Career Center by offering training, fostering connections between graduates and third- and fourth-year students, as well as employment centers and the job market. The Preparatory Program for Art and Design prepares candidates interested in studying art and design, to meet the admission requirements of academic institutions. The program provides cultural content as well as practical skills and tools.

The first Arab evening event (2018), planned by the Arab students of the School of Multidisciplinary Art, provided an insight into this rich culture. The guests were welcomed with delicious traditional cuisine, folkdance, Islamic art, a stand-up comedy act, and the exhibited works of the art students

One Step Ahead of the Rest is a program for newly-accepted students about to begin their design, art, and engineering degrees at Shenkar. The program takes place in the summer before the start of the academic year and includes first year academic courses. The objective of the program is to boost the students’ confidence, provide them with academic skills, and reduce the expected load. Here at Shenkar, we believe that public spaces should promote equality and allow an open dialogue between all members of the college.

JEWELRY WORKSHOP

Situated at the heart of the department, the jewelry workshop is used by students and lecturers, allowing them to make the most of their time at Shenkar. The workshop is equipped with all the tools and materials required for gold and silversmithing, as well as a wax, brass, and silver casting room. The workshop staff provide services during the lessons themselves, as well as during the time set aside for student homework assignments. The special nature of the Department of Jewelry Design, which trains designer-makers, requires that the workshop be open and staffed all year long to provide academic, departmental, and technical support. Our dedicated and skilled staff ensure that the equipment and workspaces are routinely and carefully maintained in compliance with safety procedures.

KNITTING WORKSHOP

A resource for students and a hub for the textile industry, the Delta-Galil Dov Lautman Knitting Workshop at the Department of Textile Design is used for the production of machineknitted prototypes.

The workshop has four computerized Stoll flatbed knitting machines, alongside two circular machines: a ribbon machine, and a machine for producing seamless, form-fitting garments. Research in the field of composite materials and other areas of design is carried out in the workshop, which serves as a national center for knitting sample preparation.

NONWOVENS WORKSHOP

Workshop manager: Irit Badosa

In the nonwovens workshop, located in the Department of Textile Design, students can produce fabrics out of various fibers using the dry-laid method, without the wet felting process. In this manner, numerous other materials can be incorporated into the textile surface. The workshop is equipped with laboratory machines for arranging the fibers, piling them in layers and binding them with a needle board, or using fusible fibers to produce materials in a relatively short amount of time. Students using the workshop create colorful surfaces: sometimes using nothing but fibers and occasionally incorporating fabrics, threads, and other soft materials. These reinforce the surface and allow it to be used for a wide range of applications.

TEXTILES PRINTING WORKSHOP

The printing workshop at the Department of Textile Design offers students an introduction to traditional and contemporary flat screen printing techniques. All work processes employed in the workshop are manual and give students an understanding of the complex world of textile printing - both from the artistic aspect of printing one-of-a-kind items, and from the mass-production aspect of running fabric printing.

Work at the workshop begins with the development of a design concept, followed by the formation of an image or pattern, and the selection of hues. The design is then prepared for single or cyclic printing, manual, digital, or integrated color separation, and color mixing. Once the fabric is selected, printing tests are done and steps are followed to produce the finished product.

Working and studying at the workshop is part of the academic requirements for students in the Department of Textile Design.

If necessary, students receive support from the workshop staff for their final projects. In addition, the workshop offers students from other departments elective courses and assists students working towards Master's Degree in Design.

Aside from consulting and guiding students on matters relating to textile printing, the staff at the workshop provide guidance on digital printing solutions outside of college facilities.

There is also an option of printing on fabric with the assistance of a textile design student who has completed the printing course.

WEAVING WORKSHOPS

Departments and facilities

The workshops offer students, enrolled onto the weaving courses, access to a variety of looms used in different types of weaving techniques and processes.

Handlooms: the workshops are equipped by 8-heddle looms for learning the basics of weaving, as well as 16 and 24-heddle looms for complex weaving projects.

Computerized handlooms: powered by advanced technology, these looms receive and execute digital weaving plans. These machines are used for special projects and cutting-edge developments in weaving, modelling, and materials.

Industrial looms: intended for high-speed weaving of full width fabrics, these looms are designed for the fashion industry, interior design, and product manufacturing.

Pointcarre professional weaving software: used for designing fabrics produced using computer-controlled handlooms and industrial looms, and for designing Jacquard fabrics, this software allows one to explore and develop complex weave structures.

The Textile Design Department facilitates the construction of flat, 2D samples into 3D creations, running a handy workshop where students have full access to industrial sewing machines, overlock machines, and a steamer.

Similarly, the Fashion Design Department runs much larger scale sewing and pattern-cutting spaces, spread over the two floors of the department, with access to the same equipment, and much more.

PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP

Workshop manager: Elinor Sahm

Part of the Department of Multidisciplinary Art, the printmaking workshop is equipped for working in both traditional techniques, like etching and woodcutting, and modern ones, like screen printing.

The workshop occupies three different spaces on the ground floor of the department building. It includes instruction classrooms, an etching and relief area with three printing presses, an acid room, an aquatint box, and independent workstations, as well as a screen-printing area with equipment for preparing photographic and digital screens, printing stations, and drying racks for the prints.

Over the years, the department has made a conscious effort to ensure the workshop is more environmentally friendly by reducing the use of volatile and polluting substances switching to water-based materials. Students are encouraged to use the workshop after school hours for in-depth, independent work.Â

SCULPTURE WORKSHOP

Part of the Department of Multidisciplinary Art, the sculpture workshop offers a work environment with a wide range of materials and applications relevant to contemporary sculpture, including polystyrene, wood, iron, wax, concrete, plaster, and polymers - with designated work areas for each.

The workshop's ample space and quality equipment allow the students to experiment with large-scale complex work processes, and gain experience in building molds and casting in various types of silicone.

The workshop is staffed by professionals who advise students on the technical aspects of their work and ensure successful completion of the projects. The workshop's dedicated team works alongside the department faculty, who teach sculpture courses there.

CERAMICS WORKSHOP

Shira Barkani’s ceramics, developed at the workshop for her 2019 graduation project in Industrial Design

Shenkar's ceramics workshop allows students to work with silicate materials, including clay, plaster, and concrete. The workshop provides services to students from all departments and supports the interdisciplinary collaborations that take place at Shenkar.

Creative applications of ceramics lead to new and refreshing projects in textile design, fashion design, gold and silversmithing, and other disciplines taught at Shenkar. As part of their studies at the Department of Industrial Design, students learn about a variety of ceramic processes, such as mold-making, casting, and glazing.

The curriculum emphasizes plaster as part of the ceramic production process and promotes 3D printing methods for sculpting or building models. The workshop is equipped with a slab roller, an extruder, electric potter's wheels, and ceramic kilns that reach a temperature of 1,300 degrees Celsius and the 3D printing lab at Shenkar provides support for prototype creation.

WOOD AND METAL DESIGN WORKSHOP

The wood and metal design workshop allows students to learn how to produce prototypes/models of the objects that they design over the course of their studies. Working with many different materials is part of the learning process and helps the students to develop the type of awareness and thinking necessary to turn them into successful designers in the industry.

At the same time, this instills students with knowledge regarding the safe use of tools, as well as an understanding of various work-processes.

During the first semester of the first year, students from the design departments undergo induction training, at the end of which they are certified to operate the saws, lathes, milling machines and dozens of other unique tools. In addition to the professional machinery, the workshop offers a material library, which is expanded every year by the students as part of the learning and creative processes. The courses are taught by the workshop manager (a mechanical engineer by trade), along with a team of skilled staff.

PLASTICS WORKSHOP

Departments and facilities

The polymer materials and plastics workshop at Shenkar, is a hub of hands-on learning dedicated to the materials and processes used in the polymers and plastics industry, and entities related to polymer materials and technology. Founded in 1995, the workshop is kitted out with the most advanced industrial equipment in the field: from extrusion and co-extrusion machines, injection-molding machines, to blow-molding and vacuum-forming machinery. These cover all the common production methods and work processes pertaining to polymers and plastics.

The workshop serves students from the Department of Polymer Materials Engineering, as well as advanced students from the design departments. Alongside providing services to Shenkar students, the workshop offers training to industry professionals and organizations.

Zohar Rapoport, investigated the use of cellulosebased materials as potential natural fillers for reinforcement of polymer composites, as part of her B.Sc. final project. Experimenting in the workshop with the waste from production of different natural oils, she was able to create a greener material

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORIES

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers several advanced laboratory courses that allow students to conduct research in accordance with the curriculum:

In the General Chemistry Lab students learn basic laboratory work skills, the fundamentals of separating mixtures, finding empirical formulas, the cycle of chemical reactions, and more.

Departments and facilities

The Analytical Chemistry Lab is supplied with equipment for conducting quantitative analyses, used to teach students precise and correct methodology preparation of standard solutions, oxidation reduction titration, potentiometric titration and spectrophotometry.

The Physical Chemistry Lab introduces the students to concepts in the quantitative relationship between theoretical principles and rules, and laboratory measurements, such as physical properties of materials, thermochemistry and kinetics.

The Organic Chemistry Lab teaches students lab techniques (chromatography, crystallization, extraction and distillation) used for the synthesis and purification of pharmaceutical active agents such as AspirinÂŽ, AcamolÂŽ, anesthetic and antiseptic drugs.

The Water Lab allows students to conduct analyses practiced in environmental engineering, such as determining biochemical and chemical oxygen requirements (COD/ BOD), determining acid/alkaline ratios in water, determining degrees of alkalinity and acidity, colorimetry, and titration-based analyses. The lab is also equipped for water treatment processes, including softening and sterilization.

The Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Technologies Lab allows third-year students to learn methods of preparing semi-solid preparations, such as ointments, absorbent ointments, gels, emulsions, and suspensions used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

Students burn treatment preparations, emulsions for constipation, calamine suspensions for soothing the skin, diaper rash ointments, sunscreens, moisturizing creams, mascara and more.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY LEARNING CENTER Director: Liat Resnick

The center houses an ever-evolving collection of digital and printed resources assisting students, researchers and lecturers with their academic goals.

Spanning across numerous fields, the comprehensive collection features a variety of specialist resources: textbooks and reference books, periodicals, hardcopies, graphic albums, final projects and theses, and subscriptions to professional databases.

Departments and facilities

Occupying a full floor of the Mitchell Building, the flexible layout contains a central open space designed around collaborative study, with computers and scanners at public’s disposal. It then breaks into several enclosed zones for quiet study and reading. Unlike in conventional libraries, Shenkar’s collection is scattered throughout all of those spaces, making the access more natural and inviting. The dedicated team of staff are available to assist with navigation in the information world, offering online courses and one-to-one assistance. In addition, the center offers subscriptions for professionals, nurturing mutually beneficial relationships between academia and industry.

Knowing that students do not always have the funds to buy the costly technical equipment needed for their projects, both the Visual Communication Department and Multidisciplinary Art School provide rental facilities, that also function as a useful learning tool. Managed by knowledgeable technicians, the facilities stock professional film and photography equipment, such as DSLR cameras, lenses, tripods, lighting, reflectors, projectors, cables and more. The equipment is reserved for the students registered for relevant courses, but exceptions could be made for other students, based on the project's needs.

ADVANCED PRINTING FACILITIES

This printing facility caters to digital and analogue reproduction. Analogue printing is only offered to students from the Multidisciplinary Art School who have been inducted into the printing / developing process. Analogue printing is carried out independently by students and is free of cost.

The digital printing service is open to all Shenkar students, with priority for students of the School. The outcome is of fine art quality and is fairly priced for this standard of print. For all other basic printing, it is recommended students use the inhouse Mafil facilities or outsource their needs. The facility operates by email requests, whereby students send their photos and specifications to the technician who will print them. Each student has a personal account and is invoiced at the end of each semester.

MAFIL PRINTING FACILITIES

As well as the printing and scanning facilities at Shenkar, there are many off-site commercial printing companies around the city, all offering competitively priced services that meet the students’ academic needs, whether printing out a thesis, or a large-scale poster.

The in-house printing specialist - Mafil, provide professional digital printing services, accessible across the campuses. Supervised by the Student Union, Mafil was opened to ensure quality printing at fair prices for the benefit of the students. Prices range from 0.15 agorot - 2.50 NIS depending on the size and colour of the print.

There are 17 printers spread across the sites that facilitate independent printing, photocopying and scanning, and are compatible with a USB. Students can also print and scan from the many campus computers or use the Cloud Server from personal computers. The Printing House located on the second floor of the Mitchell Building, provides specialized services such as wide format printing, covers and more. Since 2001, Ventura - Shenkar’s beloved, on-campus art store has been providing quality materials and equipment in great supply at the students’ fingertips. The shop founder, Arnon Ventura, being once a design student himself, understood the struggle to source the essential materials - quickly and at an affordable price. After graduating, he established a successful chain of art supplies shops at the three leading design institutions in Israel.

The products stocked at the Shenkar store target student needs, offering the essentials according to each of the departments, from a wide selection of stationary, papers and drawing media, to fabrics and haberdashery, model making materials and so much more. The store is open 6 days a week with varying opening times and staffed by friendly, knowledgeable individuals, most of whom come from a design background. The staff can advise on all equipment needs, and even recommend where to go for items not stocked in the store.

CAFES AND REFRESHMENTS

At Shenkar, there is plenty of refreshment facilities available on campus, catering to the tastes of everyone. There are two cafeterias at the main campus, provided by Karnaf catering, located in the inner courtyards. Focussing on fresh products at reasonable prices, the cafes offer a salad bar, sandwiches, pastries, hot food options and side dishes, along with a respectable cup of coffee, hot drinks and snacks, keeping the students' energy levels up all day.

In addition to the permanent cafeterias, the Student Union regularly rotates pop-up, local cuisine stalls providing an insight into the flavors of Israel, including the popular ‘Druze’ stand of delicious homemade delights - flatbreads, fillings, warm dishes and sweet-treats.

Finally, scattered over all the building are vending machines, stocked with drinks and snacks. You are also welcome to warm your own food at the kitchen corners located at almost every department, or venture into the ‘Bursa’ (Diamond Exchange District) with its many public dining spaces just a few minutes’ walk from Shenkar.
