LABOR FORCE
As of 2008, approximately 33,000. About half of the population is located in the south-central portion of the county around Madison Heights near the City of Lynchburg. The other half lives in and around the Town of Amherst, the county seat, in the northern side of the county.
About 15,866 in 2007. The unemployment rate as of February 2008 was 3.8%.

LOCAL TAXES Real Estate - .52 cents per $100 assessed value. Personal Property - $3.25 per $100 of assessed value. Machinery & Tools - $2.00 per $100 assessed value. Merchants Capital - $3.95 per $100 assessed value. Meals Tax - 4%.
The top employers include Centra’s Fairmont Crossing, Greif Brothers Inc., Glad Manufacturing, Lynchburg PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLLMENT Steel and Specialty Co, Buffalo Air Handling, Sweet Approximately 4600 for 2009-’10 school year. COST OF LIVING Living costs in the region are approximately 8% below the national average and are among the lowest in Virginia. As of 2007, median family income was $54,200.

spectacular rolling countryside. Water is abundant from the James River and many streams originate from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Most of the northwestern part of the County is part of the George Washington National Forest. The climate is mild with an average annual temperature of 56 degrees.
The two closest hospitals to Amherst County are in Lynchburg, both south and adjacent to the county. Other hospitals serving the region are in Bedford about halfway between Lynchburg and Roanoke, and Charlottesville to the north, where the University of Virginia Medical NEARBY COLLEGES & School and Hospital is located. A Big Deal For Amherst County…Madison Heights to Host 2011 Dixie Youth World Series August 2011 by Dan Curran
W
Adams, the president of the Madison Heights Youth Baseball Association (MHYBA), is hosting the 3rd World Series tournament since he became MHYBA president in 1990. “This is a big deal,” he says. Indeed, I couldn’t agree more. Sixteen teams of 11-12 yr. olds from 11 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia), along with families, friends, and fans from Virginia and the ten visiting states will converge at the W. Glenn Ricketts Youth Sports Complex in Madison Heights and the surrounding areas beginning August 5th, 2011. MHYBA bid for the right to host this prestigious tournament against Auburn Alabama. Winning this bid and being able to bring another National tournament back to Amherst County is a big accomplishment. No other locality has ever hosted three Dixie Youth World Series. This tournament is projected to bring around $5 million in tourist dollars to this area.

hile interviewing Ronnie Adams at his ballpark office one rainy day last August, it was hard to believe how busy it would be the next summer (2011) at this beautiful five diamond baseball facility, behind Monelison Middle School.
About eighteen committees and approximately 100 local volunteers are needed to successfully manage the tournament, ranging from host families, gate workers, hospitality, souvenir sales, grounds crews and concession stand workers just to name a few. A large percentage of the volunteers have been involved in both previous World Series so Adams seems to think everything will go smoothly. Meetings for committees and volunteers have already started. Each of the 16 teams can bring between 50-100 fans, including friends, relatives, coaches and, of course, the best 11-12 yr. old players from their state. Adams says, this is an expensive tournament to host because you must house and feed all the visiting teams as well as the National Officials who will attend. Local businesses will play a large part in the success of this event. MHYBA volunteers will be visiting businesses to sell advertisement and solicit donations to make sure our guest are well taken care of. Adams knows the economy is in bad shape right now and that most businesses are facing tough times. Maybe they will not be able to do what they did in the past two tournaments but he knows they will do what they can. The local businesses in Amherst County and the surrounding areas believe in supporting the youth of our localities and 2011 will not be any different. Two teams from Virginia will compete in the tournament: the Virginia State Champion All-Star team, and the local AllStars from Madison Heights will compete as the host team. Opening Ceremonies and a team welcome dinner will be held on Friday, August 5th and competition will begin on Saturday, Aug 6th. The Championship Game will be held Thursday August 11th. This will be an exciting time for Amherst County. Tourist from all over the southeast will enjoy the southern hospitality that only a small town in Virginia can provide. Get on board. Help support this wonderful event and plan to come out to the ball park and see some exciting baseball. The MHYBA organization and its dedicated volunteers will make Amherst County proud to say they are the host of the 2011 Dixie Youth World Series.

Amherst County Celebrating 250th in 2011 In 1761 (250 years ago), Amherst County was formed from the southern half of Albemarle County. The original county seat had been in Cabelsville, now Colleen, in what would later become Nelson County. The county was named for Sir Jeffrey Amherst who commanded the British forces that successfully secured Canada from the French. In 1807 the Amherst County assumed its present proportions when Nelson County was formed from its northern half. At that point, the county seat was moved to the village of Five Oaks, later renamed Amherst. The present county courthouse was built in 1870 and has served the county ever since. In the early days, the major crop raised in Amherst County was tobacco. Apple orchards were part of mixed farming that replaced tobacco, especially in the late 19th century. Timber, mining and milling were also important industries. The introduction of the railroad in the late 19th century greatly influenced the county's growth. Amherst county contains many good examples of 18th, 19th and early 20th century rural and small town architecture. The downtown area of Amherst is a classic example of early 20th century commercial architecture.

The committee, formed by various community volunteers as well as the Recreation and Parks Dept, Amherst Public Library, Historical Museum, Department of Public Works and Tourism Dept, will be working on using festivals and community activities to celebrate the special milestone. A large community event scheduled for Saturday, April 30th, will commemorate the actual May 1st birthday. The committee will be seeking volunteers and sponsors to help with the preparation of events.

Notable Amherst Connections Thomas Jefferson Until five years before his death in 1826, Thomas Jefferson established and maintained extensive contacts with the Amherst County area. His activities were a profile of his own interests as lawyer, planter, inventor, traveler and warm friend to those he served. As a young man, he furnished legal assistance for several prominent county families, and, in one case, directed a slander suit for a client who may have received $6000 in damages. When the Revolutionary War spread to central and western Virginia during 1781, Jefferson briefly took refuge in the county after being driven from Monticello by a detachment of British soldiers intent upon his capture. Frank Padgett Frank Padgett was a slave and master batteau man along the James River in western Amherst County. On January 21, 1854, the area had experienced heavy rains and the river was high and fast moving. The tow line for the canal boat Clinton broke as the boat neared Balcony Falls. As the boat was being abandoned there arose a call for a rescue mission. Frank Padgett volunteered to help with a batteau and he was able to save many from the river. Although the waters swallowed him as he tried to save one of the last men, to this day he is still considered a hero who gave his own life for others.

Edgar Allan Poe Many are familiar with Poe’s association with the city of Richmond, but lesser known is that his foster father, John Allan, from whom he took the Allan name, had ties to Amherst County. Allan’s uncle, William Galt, owned Galt’s Mill on the James River; the mercantile firm of Allan and Ellis (of the Pedlar Mills Ellis family) dealt in tobacco. Poe’s associations with the Ellis boys would stand him in good stead when his works were published in the Southern Literary Messenger, edited by Thomas Harding Ellis. George Branham Originally from Glen Burnie, Maryland, was a Monacan who returned to Bear Mountain and brought much vitality back to the Monacan Nation in his work with the annual Pow Wows. Sarah Winston Syme Henry Known best for being mother to the famed patriot Patrick Henry, Sarah came to reside at Winton in Amherst County, to be with her daughter Jane Meredith, married to Col. Samuel Meredith. It was in Amherst County where she spent the last ten years of her life and it was here that she was buried. Her grave at Winton is one of the few surviving burial sites dating from the eighteenth century. Queena Stovall Queena Dillard grew up in Lynchburg and Campbell County, moving to Amherst County after she married Jonathan Breckinridge Stovall. It was in Amherst that she raised her family in the typical rural lifestyle that became so well known in her folk art. Her first notable piece, Hog Killing, was drawn from memories of rural life in central Virginia. Much of Amherst County’s rural life has been seen by many all over the world since it was first exhibited at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection in Williamsburg. Often called the "Grandma Moses of Virginia,", Stovall didn't begin painting until she was 62.

JAMES RIVER HERITAGE TRAIL
This blacktop hiking and biking trail is accessible from the Blackwater Creek Trail at Lynchburg’s riverfront. A trestle footbridge carries you to the one-mile stretch of trail running the length of Percival’s Island, and a second footbridge leads you across the James to Amherst for another 1.5-mile path.

Plans are underway to open the first Amherst County Visitor’s Center in a few years. It will be located just slightly east of the intersection of Rt.s 29 and 60, inside the refurbished Amherst Train Depot.
ATV TRAILS
Amherst County offers 25 miles of trails for All-Terrain-Vehicles just west of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Rt. 130. For more information, contact the Forest Service at (540) 291-2188
VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE RAILWAY TRAIL
This trail is open for two miles from Piney River in Nelson County to Roses Mill in Amherst County. The Piney River and adjacent farmland provide beautiful vistas for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Numerous birds and native plants abound.
FISHING
Amherst County abounds with prime fishing spots. Boat ramps and launches provide access to 50 miles of water along the James, Pedlar, and Piney rivers. Anglers can also try their luck at one of the several fishing lakes found in county parks.

8th Annual Business Appreciation Awards Dinner Held Last May 10, 2010 Held in the Florence Elston Inn at Sweet Briar College, the Amherst County Chamber of Commerce, along with Amherst County, honored 25 local businesses that were nominated for “Business of the Year” awards. Sweet Briar College’s President, Dr. Jo Ellen Parker, was the guest speaker and addressed “The Public Value of Private Higher Education.” ACCC Vice-President Ronnie Adams emceed the event and presented the awards.
