Amherst County At a Glance POPULATION As of 2015, Amherst County’s population was 32,353 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 1.44 percent. About half of the population is located in the south-central portion of the county around Madison Heights near the City of Lynchburg. The other half lives in and around the Town of Amherst, the county seat, in the northern side of the county.
HEALTH CARE
The two closest hospitals to Amherst County are in Lynchburg, both south and adjacent to the county. Other hospitals serving the region are in Bedford about halfway

Fairmont Crossing between Lynchburg and Roanoke, and Charlottesville to the north, where the University of Virginia Medical School and Hospital is located. About 270 physicians representing all major specialties practice in the area. Two nursing homes are located in the Town of Amherst, and several others are in Lynchburg. Local Roofing Company Changes Name Craftsman Roofing Inc. was founded February 1, 2016 when Mitch Reaves purchased the assets of W. A. Lynch Roofing of Lynchburg and formed the new company Craftsman Roofing Inc. A Beautiful Circa 1826 Amherst County Home
E
dloe Glades is an antebellum estate with boxwood gardens, broad lawns and a picturesque lake. It is a unique, secluded venue with multiple settings for rehearsal dinners, ceremonies, receptions, meetings and conferences. The Earley family has called Edloe Glades home since their grandparents, Harold and Lillian Earley, came east to visit their daughter, Virginia, at Sweet Briar College back in 1951. They fell in love with this area and spent most of the rest of their lives driving back and forth each year between the beef cattle farm here in Amherst and the cotton farm in Arizona. Since their passing, three other families, of two generations of the Earley clan, have lived at Edloe Glades. Now the owners are making the house available to other families who see it as a good place to begin their married lives. No venue in the area offers as many beautiful and unique settings for a ceremony, rehearsal dinner and/or reception. Overnight accommodations for up to 20 family members or guests are available.

Edloe Glades is first and foremost a 2,000 acre working farm. Horse paddocks adjoin on one side while beef cattle graze at the other. Unseen are the blocks of Loblolly Pine being grown for pulp and timber. Built in 1826 by John Camm, grandson of the last royal president of the College of William and Mary, Edloe Glades was originally about 1200 acres. The old Glade road, used by Thomas Jefferson to reach Poplar Forest from his Charlottesville home at Monticello, ran through the property. At the time of the War Between the States, Edloe Glades was owned by a Dr. Morriss, who was blind but still able to mix medications with the use of Braille. His name is scratched into the wavy old glass in the master bedroom window.The cottage in the front garden of the main house served as his office. His old horse took him on his rounds and returned him home. The Earleys extended the size of the farm to 10,000 acres before selling most of it in the ‘80s. 2,000 acres remain today. Also on the property are two other houses, one owned and lived in by grandson and managing partner Kerry D. Scott and his wife, the other enjoyed by all of the family.

NEWS & NOTES CENTRA AMHERST MEDICAL CENTER EVENTS
The new Centra Amherst Medical Center, located at 115 Ambriar Court (behind the Ambriar Plaza Shopping Ctr.), will open to patients on December 1, 2016. Construction for the facility is on track. The community is invited to an open house celebration on Wednesday, November 30, from 6 7:30 p.m. Parking will be available at the Ambriar Shopping Center with shuttle service to the site. The event will include comments from Centra and community leaders, entertainment, light refreshments and a tour of the new medical center. The event will be held rain or shine. Centra Amherst Medical Center will enhance access to medical care by offering primary care, imaging services and physical therapy in a state-of-the-art facility.
NEW FLORIST AT AMBRIAR PLAZA
Ellen Wailes had an idea in 2015 that she would open a new business. It has taken her to the shopping center her grand-father, Paul Wailes, had developed back in the 1970’s. Wailes Florist and Gifts was established in Nov. of 2015, and is a full-service FTD florist that is located in the same place where Claudia operated for many years. “We’re happy about how well we’ve been received in the community, and are looking forward to serving more folks, especially from Sweet Briar and the new Centra medical facility,” Ellen said. Amherst County resident Russel Johnson and his wife Nonnie were looking for a change of pace in their respective careers when Russel observed that there was a demand for a drive-up coffee shop in Madison Heights. So the Bean Barn was launched in March 2016. “We wanted to do something casual and more fun. Now I can work with my wife and some family members,” Russel says. His neices had already worked at another coffee shop (they are more prevalent in Lynchburg) and wanted to share their know-how. Besides flavorful coffee (they use locally popular Trager Brothers Coffee out of Nelson County) and specialty hot and cold drinks, The Bean Barn offers pastries, cakes, cookies and sandwiches, and is open seven days weekly. They are
located near the Town & Country Shopping Center (where Panda House restaurant is). They have made many new friends since opening the shop and are establishing a good customer base. “We aim to cater to our customers’ demands and tastes, so I ask them what they want and want to try,” said Nonnie The mochas and Chai tea are popular drinks, while their cheescakes (especially strawberry) are customer favorites. Some of their drinks coincide with their “barn” theme, including The Boon Docker, The Toasted Farmer, English Saddle and The Barn Burner. “We’re having fun and feel that we can be an important part of someone’s day,” says Russel. There are a variety of parks and trails within the county offering healthy “back-to-nature” experiences. The county maintains several parks in very attractive settings throughout the county. There are two on the historic James River and three are at the foot of the fabulous Blue Ridge Mountains. *County park hours are sunrise and one hour after sunset. [Please note that county code
stipulates that consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited on all county property.] COOLWELL PARK Located on Coolwell Road, south of the Town of Amherst, this recreational park has a picnic area with grills, a picnic shelter, a play area for children, restrooms, lighted all-purpose fields (soccer, football, and softball), outdoor basketball courts, a nature trail and an outdoor amphitheater. MONACAN PARK This park is located on the scenic and historic James River. The park offers a boat ramp and boat dock for access to the river, fishing benches, a covered picnic pavilion and picnic area, a play area for children and restroom facilities. It is located in the Elon area of the county. Directions: take Rt. 130 W. to Elon. Turn left on Monacan Park Rd. The park is located at the end of the Monacan Park Road. RIVEREDGE PARK An exciting development for the county has been the enhancement and expansion of Riveredge Park, on the Madison Heights side of the James

River directly across from Downtown Lynchburg. The newest addtion to the park is the “BLUESTONE OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATER” located along the Riveredge Park Trail. The boat ramp at this park is used each year to launch the batteaux for the annual James River Batteau Festival. This park offers fishing access, along with comfort stations, picnic tables and a community center. This park is accessible by taking the first two lefthand turns at the bottom of the hill of Rt. 163 (old Rt. 29 bus., now called Old Town Connector) just before the bridge crossing into Downtown Lynchburg.

MILL CREEK LAKE PARK Located in the Temperance area of the county, this park is considered by many residents to be the most scenic with a clear view of Mt. Pleasant and is part of the Sleeping Giant Loop on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail [www.dgif.virginia.gov ] Furthermore, this park is extremely popular with the fishermen! Hiking Trails RIVEREDGE TRAIL This newest addition to the county trail system is a blacktop hiking/ biking trail that extends .4 miles along the James River from Riveredge Park. The county is planning to continue the extension of this trail as property and funds become available. JAMES RIVER HERITAGE TRAIL This blacktop hiking/biking trail is part of the Peaks of Otter Loop on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail [www.dgif.virginia. gov ] and has two access points. One is from Percival Island Natural Area. The trail extends from Lynchburg’s Blackwater Creek Trail, crossing the railroad trestle onto Percival Isle from Lynchburg. It traverses the island for about one mile along an old railroad bed. The trail continues across the James River on another trestle, and continues along the James River in Amherst County for another 1 ½ miles. This is a beautiful scenic walk or bike ride through an historical area. The trail is also accessible in Amherst County at the end of Fertilizer Road [enter via the Central Virginia Training School]. Be sure to explore the exhibit, VIRGINIA ROCKS, at the JRHT trailhead at the base of Fertilizer Road. VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE RAILWAY TRAIL This trail is idyllically located in the rolling Virginia countryside and follows the banks of the Piney and Tye Rivers along the path of the longest

This trail extends 7 miles for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders and provides a perfect opportunity to relive the historically significant events that developed and changed Amherst and Nelson Counties.. The two access points are located at Piney River and Roses Mill. BROTHER BASIL NATURE TRAIL Located at Coolwell Park, this ¼ mile trail is located behind the outdoor amphitheater. APPALACHIAN TRAIL Approximately 25 miles of this trail passes through Amherst County from the Nelson County line to the James River, crossing over the James River Foot Bridge into Bedford County. There are many beautiful and scenic trails that run through the mountains of the county. Enjoy the sights from Mt. Pleasant, Cole Mountain, Tar Jacket, and Rocky Row Run, just to name a few. HENRY LANUM MEMORIAL TRAIL Located in the Mount Pleasant National Scenic Area, this 4.8 mile loop leads to the 4,071 foot summit of Mount Pleasant with panoramic

OLD HOTEL TRAIL A 5-mile loop, when combined with the Appalachian Trail, across the meadows on the summit of Cole Mountain with fantastic views of the Amherst foothills and the western valley. VIRGINIA BIRDING & WILDLIFE TRAIL From the Atlantic Ocean of Virginia’s eastern border, to the towering Mt. Rogers at its southwest corner, the Commonwealth includes every bird and animal habitat that occurs naturally between Maine and Florida. Virginia also offers a long history, rich culture, and tradition of warm hospitality to welcome visitors. Within Virginia’s 43,000 square miles of diverse natural habitat, you can find some 400 species of birds, 250 species of fish, 150 species of terrestrial and marine animals, 150 species of amphibians and reptiles, and a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. The Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail celebrates this diversity. In fact, it is the first statewide program of its kind in the United States. All three phases of the trail link wildlife viewing sites throughout the state have been completed: The Coastal, Piedmont, and Mountain Phases. Amherst County has several trail loops listed inthe Mountain Phase trail system. The Peaks of Otter Loop includes the James River Heritage Trail along the southern border of the county. The Sleeping Giant Loop, includes Mt. Pleasant Scenic Area, Mill Creek Lake, Stonehouse Lake, Thrashers Lake, as well as the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail. There are two senior center sites in Amherst County. The schedule of activities at each of the sites

The ACCC maintains a fully-stocked brochure area for travelers and tourists. Social Media - With hundreds of followers on Facebook and Twitter, you can utilize the Chamber to promote your events, programs, and seminars. Member e-Blasts - Over 300 people receive our e-blasts. Highlights new members, events in the county, Chamber events, and important state/legislative information that matters to your business, every month. Send us your newsworthy events and we will get the word out. Customer Referrals- Customer-to and business-to-business referrals. Information Requests- professional packets sent out upon request with relocation information, etc. Membership Decal - Every member receives an ACCC decal for display, informing customers of your active support of local businesses, economic development, tourism, and fair business practices. Amherst County Guidebook - This annual magazine is distributed throughout the Amherst County area and is published in conjunction with ACCC as a vehicle to promote Amherst County.
