Five things Dana Point should know this week County Says Committed to Harbor Revitalization Lease Agreement by June 26 Meeting THE LATEST: During the Dana Point Harbor Advisory Board (DPHAB) meeting on May 29, County of Orange Chief Real Estate Officer Scott Mayer said that the county and the private development partner, Dana Point Harbor Partners (DPHP), are both committed to reaching a lease agreement concerning the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization in time to present to the County Board of Supervisors for their Tuesday, June 26 meeting.

Mayer has spent the last six months negotiating with DPHP. He described the negotiations as “complex,” and said they were going as well as could be expected with a project of this scale.

James Lenthall, chairman of the DPHAB and president of the Dana Point Boaters Association, told Mayer that Harbor shareholders were concerned that with the county’s history of tough negotiation, the burden of revenue and investment recovery for DPHP, a private developer partner, would fall onto the Harbor’s users in the form of things such as significant boat slip rate increases.

Mayer said that he could not discuss specifics, but assured Lenthall and the DPHAB that both the county and DPHP have prioritized maintaining the Harbor’s presence as a public amenity.

WHAT’S NEXT: A master lease could be discussed by the Orange County Board of Supervisors during their upcoming June 26 meeting. Post Office Changes Access Due to Break-Ins THE LATEST: Due to a series of P.O. box break-ins, the United States Postal Service (USPS) office on Del Prado Avenue has recently had to lock their outer doors after business hours. Previously, the outer doors allowed customers to access their P.O. boxes, shipping materials as well as Dana Point Times June 1-7, 2018

The USPS office in Capistrano Beach began similar procedures earlier this year.

City of Dana Point Unrolls Placespeak Survey Program THE LATEST: The city is working with a community engagement company, Placespeak, to incorporate a new community engagement tool to obtain public input on key issues associated with the city. This new tool includes an online survey that will give residents an opportunity to weigh in on issues that impact the community to help improve Dana Point. Surveys are designed to be brief and should only take a few minutes to complete.

Coastal Kitchen, BevMo, Others Honored at State of the City Luncheon THE LATEST: The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce held its annual State of the City luncheon at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa on May 30.

Master of ceremonies Duane Cave of San Diego Gas & Electric presented four local businesses with Beautification Awards. South Cove, BevMo, Coastal Kitchen and Harpoon Henry’s were honored for their efforts to improve and promote future positive growth in Dana Point in the past year.

Jay Styles, chairman of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, then took the mic, informing the crowd that the new Dana Point Chamber of Commerce is concentrating on being more proactive and less reactive in current issues surrounding business in Dana Point.

Mayor Richard Viczorek followed, presenting a video made by Chamber of Commerce members, which reiterated his message of Dana Point being a great place to invest with abundant natural resources, future growth potential and cultural identity.

THE LATEST: Ecologists from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), Center for Environmental Biology and San Diego State University have tested the resilience of native plant communities when faced with wildfire, drought and invasion by non-native species, according to a press release from UCI. The research comes after a rip-roaring year of wildfires around Orange County, including in San Clemente where one 750-plusacre fire came close to homes and the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter in July.

The research of species in fire zones, published in Ecosphere, determined whether Orange County plant communities recovered following the 2007 Santiago wildfire and the 2011-2015 California drought.

According to the release, researchers used data from areas of long-term vegetation to compare changes in native and non-native plant cover in burned and unburned areas as well as responses to drought in regions with different native shrub densities.

“They found that coastal sage scrub, the dominant native plant community in Southern California, was generally resilient to wildfire, reaching pre-burn cover within four years,” the release stated. “However, invasive non-native grasses increased in abundance in burned areas, suggesting long-term impacts of fire on native plants.”

The study found that native plants were overall resilient to drought, but areas with dense shrubs were more affected, which suggests drought conditions could have a negative impact. They also found that native wildflowers had the highest diversity in wet years that were preceded by dry years, suggesting they face less competition from invasive non-native grasses, which are also abundant in wet years.

“Our results demonstrated the resilience of native shrub cover to fires along with the susceptibility of dense native shrubs and native grasses to drought and increases in non-native species,” said Dr. Sarah Kimball, first author and researcher at the Center for Environmental Biology at UCI. “The data suggest that it may be helpful to remove non-native species during fire recover,” the release stated. “The data also shows that grasslands in Orange County are heavily invaded by non-native species, indicating that restoration of those areas should be a priority. As a follow-up to the study, experimental plots have now been set up to test whether removal of non-natives during the first few post-fire years will lead to lower non-native cover in burned areas.”

Local Students Make Semi-Finals at LEGO League Global Innovation Award Competition A local youth robotics team was one of only 20 teams out of 32,000 entries selected to advance to the Eighth Annual FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award competition for their outstanding innovative solution that demonstrated originality while having the potential to add significant value to the world. The local homeschooled robotics team, Operation T.A.C. (Technology & Character), has invented the SeaSafe Water Analysis Kit to better protect swimmers from illnesses contracted while in contaminated water.

The team of six, ages 11 to 15, will travel to San Jose from June 19-21 to present their innovation to expert judges.

All semi-finalists will participate in a twoday, hands-on innovation event at San Jose State University Student Union, which culminates in the awarding of the top prize of $20,000 to continue work on their inventions; two runners-up will take home $5,000 each.

Dana Point Wounded Warrior to Compete in Department of Defense Games U.S. Navy Intelligence Specialist, Petty Officer 2nd Class Cassidy Busch, of Dana Point, who currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia, will join more than 250 seriously wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans at the 2018 Department of Defense (DOD) Warrior Games being held from June 1-9 at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Busch was selected for team Navy after the competitive Wounded Warrior Trials in February at Naval Station Mayport in Mayport, Florida. Team Navy includes service members and veterans with upper-body, lower-body, and spinal cord injuries; traumatic brain injuries; visual impairment; serious illnesses; and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Busch will be competing against athletes from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, Special Operations Command, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

During the nine days of competition, Busch will compete in field, cycling, swimming and wheelchair basketball.

Two Men Found Dead in Vehicle in San Juan Capistrano, Same Day Two men who were found dead in vehicles in San Juan Capistrano on Camino Las Ramblas and in the California Highway Patrol (CHP) parking lot on Camino Capistrano on Tuesday, May 29 are being investigated as unrelated suicides, according to authorities.

The first incident on May 29 was the death of a San Juan Capistrano male in his 40s who was found in a car on Camino Las Ramblas. The death is being investigated as a suicide, according to San Juan Capistrano Chief of Police Carl Bulanek.

Bulanek confirmed on Wednesday, May 30 that the incident appears to be a suicide and that the man was deceased upon arrival of Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) deputies at around 11:30 a.m. on May 29. Deputies responded to a call from a passerby and found the man dead inside the vehicle on Camino Las Ramblas, toward the northwest end of the road where there are not many residencies, Bulanek said.

“It’s an ongoing investigation but it doesn’t appear that there is anything suspicious at this point,” Bulanek said.

The second incident, a suspected suicide, was a 60-year-old Mission Viejo man found in a vehicle in the parking lot of the San Juan Capistrano CHP office at 32951 Camino Capistrano, according to a CHP press release. A CHP officer conducted a welfare check on the individual at approximately 1:30 p.m. and the officer found that the man was unresponsive, then was pronounced deceased by the Orange County Fire Authority.

‘Little Free Library’ Grand Opening Little Free Libraries are small, frontyard book exchanges that total more than 70,000 around the world in 80 countries from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan and SanClemente.

Local residents Mike and Sandy Woodward said they’ve seen them while traveling and wanted to build one for years.

“After seeing old wood in a neighbor’s trash, we recycled it and built this as an anniversary present to each other,” the couple said. “For the roof we used a recycled piece of Mike’s art using sheets of blue opal.”

The Woodward’s recently built Little Free Library joins thousands of locations that share books and promotes a community of readers.

“Our Little Free Library doesn’t just belong to us, it belongs to the whole city,” Mike and Sandy said in a press release.

“It’s our hope that this Little Free Library will bring a little more joy, a little more connection and a whole lot more books to our community.”

The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation and the American Library Association. Reader’s Digest named them one of the “50 Surprising Things We Love about America.”

Letters to the Editor RESPONSE TO "SQUIRRELS INFEST PALISADES" ANDREA FRIEDMAN, Dana Point

I am a resident of Dana Point and I understand the writer's complaint, but only to a degree. I also have friends that get irritated when fruit from their backyard fruit trees is eaten. The problem is that birds also eat the fruit, so should we just go kill all the wildlife in our backyards?

Killing is never the answer but actually causes the population to increase, endangers other animals and pollutes the environment.

The problem with poison, other than the fact it is inhumane and extremely cruel, is it almost always inadvertently kills other animals: neighbor's cats or dogs that eat the dead squirrel, hawks, and even endangered animals, such as the burrowing owl. Poisons work their way up the food chain, and can make their way into the environment. Poisoning squirrels causes those females that survive to then reproduce even more offspring, as a result of a decimation of their colony, per animal experts and biologists as learned by the city of Berkeley.

Poisoning is not the “answer: we need to live in peace with wildlife. ” In 2014 when I lived near Berkeley, I read about the city’s concern over potential pollution into the Bay from perceived squirrel overpopulation at its large, 1,000-acre Cesar Chavez Park (a former landfill) located next to the Bay. To prevent possible pollution, the city announced a proposal to poison the entire squirrel population in the park. Upon hearing this news, I met with other concerned citizens, groups, as well as the chief biologist for the Northern California Regional Park system, and other wildlife experts.

What we learned from these experts was surprising and led the city of Berkeley to stop the proposed killing and enact an ordinance prohibiting feeding wildlife at the park, and educating the public. Why? The experts explained that when squirrels have their population reduced, they have an innate response to increase the number

of babies born in litters, actually resulting in a tremendous increase in population.

Thus, killing increases the population as well as endangers other animals and the environment. The consensus/solution was to post “do not feed wildlife” signs at the park and to educate the public.

I strongly suggest that Ms. Beauchamp contact the parks department for Pines Park and the city, and suggest posting “do not feed the wildlife” signs, the solution that worked for Berkeley. Also, she can discourage squirrels from coming to her yard by removing bird feeders and water.

Poisoning is not the answer: we need to live in peace with wildlife.

COUNCIL GETS ITS WAY BUT MANY QUESTIONS REMAIN CAROL KELLY, Dana Point

Dana Point sped through the districting process in record time, but many questions remain: Why Dana Point? Why did La Jolla lawyer, Russell D. Myrick, new to the California Voting Rights Act districting scam, choose Dana Point as his first and only target?

Are we racially polarized? After some pressure, the city did a racial polarization study.

Why the rush? Why did the city pass a resolution stating it would move to districts within 19 days instead of the allowed 45 days, thereby making it virtually certain from the outset that we would be districting in 2018?

Why wasn’t there more outreach? Why wasn’t districting on the city website for several weeks? Why did the city need to be coerced into holding workshops? Why no survey? Why no letters to constituents? We receive notices by mail when there is road work on our streets. Why no mailed notices when our voting rights were at risk?

How did Council make its decision?

There were at least 12 maps. None were discussed except Tan VII and Tan VI. No reasons were given for those choices and no explanation of criteria or rationale. No reason was given for ignoring the large number of citizens who had advocated for four districts to keep their communities intact. No mention was made of an online survey nor the many preferences expressed by voters. The same happened with the choice of districts. Once two incumbent districts were chosen, there was no explanation for why that logic didn’t apply to the third one, Capo Beach.

It’s sad that after this frantic rush to districting, two incumbents will happily run in small districts, but 34,000 Dana Point voters lost four out of five of their votes.

Some may not realize this until they go to the polls. When will Council answer these questions?

PLASTIC IS ALMOST THE ROOT OF ALL EVILS KERRY SINK, San Clemente

Since the advent of plastics manufacturing sometime in the 1950s, we can say this business has exploded exponentially.

The bright side is that so many jobs have been created and science and engineering have expanded beyond expectations. The downside today is that plastic is almost the root of all evils.

Oil consumption has been largely blamed on transportation. But the plastic industry is never held accountable because it has become a necessity. As a fisherman, I would never get mad at my Plano Tackle box from Plano, Texas.

I was at a fast-food restaurant the other day and they offered me many side dishes in these plastic cups with plastic lids.

The younger generation doesn’t even know the difference because it is so commonplace; people don’t realize that some plastic is just being dumped into the ocean a hundred miles off shore. Here in San Clemente, people still throw trash out of their cars, cigarette butts all over the place and just ignorant things like that.

I get into small arguments with my wife about sorting the trash. She will put a plastic Oxy-Clean container in the normal garbage. I called CR&R and they said they do sort the trash, but it comes at an extra expense to the company. That means our trash bill keeps going up, for one.

And another is that the people who dig recyclables out of our bins are taking away from the trash company getting a little bit of revenue back.

Maybe I am the garbage cop at my house, but I see it everywhere and if a few of us make a difference, we might make a difference.

I am willing to pay for my paper to-go boxes at 30 cents per meal or whatever.

That’s why local restaurants can’t do it for free and opt for Styrofoam. With high rent and everything, they have no choice if they want to stay in business.

This all starts with parents. Use wax paper and reduce the snack baggies. Wash your kids’ backpacks and teach them to do it too.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

At the Movies: ‘First Reformed’ Wants the Last Word on Current Issues

aul Schrader is a filmmaker who has really made his mark on cinema as someone who knows how to get into the psyche of men who are mentally unstable.

Whether it be his 1976 screenplays for Taxi Driver and Obsession, or four years later with American Gigolo and Raging Bull, even B-movie schlock like his remake of Cat People (1982) or The Canyons (2013) have his trademarks. Now, Schrader’s back with one of his best films on his resume, First Reformed.

Reverend Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a chaplain at the oldest church in the state of New York, and he is still struggling with PTSD from his son’s sudden death and divorce from his wife. Mary (Amanda Seyfried) asks for Toller’s help when her troubled husband wants her to get an abortion

so to not bring a child into an “evil world” that has climate change and greedy corporations. Throughout the film, Toller journals his contemplations of whether he can physically make a difference in the name of God, or just let everything happen around him as “God’s plan.”

First Reformed has quite a lot of political commentary on climate change, abortion, greed, Christianity and public relations. Schrader, who started his career writing scripts for legends like Martin Scorsese and Brian De Palma, has grown organically into his own filming technique and it shows in the best way with Reformed. Hawke and Seyfried are big names, but not big enough to be a distraction from the themes the story is having us question. If you want to challenge your morals, this is worth a catch. DP

n May 28, hundreds gathered atop the oceanside cliffs of Pines Park for the City of Dana Point and Veterans of Foreign Wars Dana Point Post 9934 ceremony in honor of Memorial Day. The service included memorials to members of the U.S. military who were killed in action during the last year.

The Dana Point VFW post gave special recognition to veterans of U.S. military services that served in Operation Desert

Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan and the global war on terrorism.

The program featured a special guest speaker, Deputy Secretary Mathew L. Dana of the California Department of Veterans Affairs, who presented the Memorial Day proclamation issued by California Gov. Jerry Brown. Dana is a descendant of the family of Richard Henry Dana, the author whose name was given to the area that later became the city of Dana Point. DP

Road to Clovis Dana Hills’ girls 4x400meter relay team, thrower Max McKhann qualify for State

he CIF track and field postseason is a gauntlet.

One false move in a five-week stretch can end a season’s worth of work.

From league finals to CIF-SS preliminaries to CIF-SS finals to Masters, only two Dana Hills entries have survived and earned the honor of advancing to the CIF State Championships.

The Dolphins’ girls 4x400-meter relay team of juniors Hailey Ray and Ximena Bustos and sophomores Anisa Rind and Mia Lawrence along with senior thrower Max McKhann will compete in the 100th edition of the meet this weekend at Buchanan High School in Clovis. Preliminaries are on Friday, June 1 with the finals on Saturday, June 2.

Both qualified with strong performances at the CIF-SS Masters meet on Saturday, May 26 at El Camino College in Torrance.

The girls 4x400 team finished sixth with a time of 3:50.25 to advance to state for the second consecutive season. Bustos, Ray and Rind were all on last year’s 4x400 team that finished second at the state finals.

s weather conditions remain unchanged, it’s the surface bass fishing that has stood out at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said that the half-day trips have been fishing the kelp lines and getting decent surface action before the winds would show up. However, a string of good conditions and water temperatures made for healthy hauls of calico bass over the course of the week.

The three-quarter day trips have seen similar bass conditions and split time with

For McKhann, advancing to the state meet is the cap on a career-best season and the culmination of the senior’s high school career.

McKhann has posted seven wins in the discus this season, including a personal record of 179 feet, nine inches to take the Orange County Championships title on April 14 and the South Coast League title at 167 feet, eight inches on May 4. He has thrown over 170 feet twice, first at county championships and again at the CIF-SS Division 1 preliminaries with a throw of 170 feet even.

In the postseason, McKhann has won

league, finished second at CIF-SS Division 1 preliminaries, took sixth at CIF-SS Division 1 finals and qualified in ninth at Masters.

McKhann is seeded 13th at State with Masters champion Clifford McMullen of Hart High School taking the top seed at 184 feet, six inches. Christian Lavalle of Mission Viejo is seeded second at 180 feet, nine inches. Lavalle was second to McKhann at the South Coast League finals.

The girls 4x400 team has been the Dolphins’ most consistent unit of the season.

The returning members of Ray, Bustos and Rind have run the relay together in every event this season, and Lawrence has run in the last six. The team also hasn’t had too much variance in their times with five of their eight times at 3:50 and a sea-

Seniors on San Clemente High School’s national title-winning surf team set sail for broader horizons

t’s another gray morning at T-Street, but the water’s glassy and a few pick-and-choose corners are popping up on the inside. Eighty-pound kids are whipping tight arcs and launching air reverses into the flats. Watching from the bluff, the seniors on San Clemente High School’s (SCHS) national-title-winning surf team are mulling around, checking the surf and trying to downplay the anxiety of their impending finals this week and graduation next week.

“In my time on the surf team, I think the most important thing I’ve learned is balance,” Erika Hunting said.

She’s not talking about the kind of balance required to perform on a surfboard. Hunting will be attending Stanford University this fall and studying bio engineering (and “maybe a little computer science).” She was named the 2018 Triton of the Year, and as coach John Dowell has pointed out, she’s a big reason solar power will soon be incorporated into all of the high schools throughout the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD). In her time at SCHS, Hunting founded the Blue Oceans Club to initiate beach cleanups and the Think Like a Mountain coalition to lead the interscholastic charge for CUSD Solar.

“It’s easy to get stressed out with everything at school, and it’s important to take school seriously, but it’s also important to relax with your friends and have fun,” Hunting said. “With the surf team, it’s definitely been great for me all four years to have that and have a place I knew I could come and just be myself.”

After winning back-to-back national titles the last couple of years, this is a graduating class that’s larger, more accomplished and more driven than most.

Talking to them at T-Street, all of them noted that they’re bound for higher education. Some will attend community colleges until they find their groove, others are bound for four-year universities.

Surfing’s still a large part of who they are and what they do, but some of the wisdom that coach Dowell has imparted on them over the course of the last four

years is that there’s also life outside of the water and that time in the classroom can occasionally supersede time in the tube.

“He taught us the importance of being a well-rounded person, not just a surfer,” said Bryce Crane, who has plans to work as a lifeguard through the summer, then attend Pepperdine University in the fall. He’s planning on studying business administration and hopes to become a member of the surf team. He was also the homecoming king this year.

What’s so impressive is that it’s not like these young adults couldn’t have gone and chased the pro surfing dream.

They’re all remarkably talented. Coming from one of the premier hotbeds of surf talent in the country, some have enjoyed the support of sponsors throughout their tenure as Tritons. For example, Noah Hohenester has ridden for surfwear brand RVCA since he was 9 years old. Next fall, he will attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and study construction management. He’s also hoping to join the surf team there.

Davi Toledo is another example. His brother, Filipe, is currently in the hunt for his first WSL World Title and is coming off of a massive contest win at the Oi Rio Pro last month. Davi rips in his own right, but he’s heading to Saddleback College to study business.

“Being down here, surfing with everyone, especially on contest days, it’s been really special,” Davi said. “Good food,

good times, winning everything, that feels good. Now I’ll head to Saddleback and see what happens from there.”

The success stories go on and on. Another local standout, David Economos, will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara in the fall while also committing to the WSL’s North American qualifying series. He plans to study communications, “because it seems like a good way to get a job.”

Zoe Tothier will be attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and studying graphic design. Elijah Fox is pursuing a meteorology certificate, then hopes to get a degree in meteorology and eventually become a surf forecaster—like his old man, who has forecasted for the Navy.

“I think it would be cool to be a forecaster for Surfline,” Fox said.

A few months back, I was interviewing Andrew Stark, who was the president of Surfing Australia at the time.

A massive organization that governs all things surfing down under, Stark explained, “We’re not just trying to produce good surfers, but also good people.”

The same could easily be said for coach Dowell’s program at SCHS. A dominant competitive force on the high school surf scene, as is so evident by his graduating class this year, the program is not just producing champion waveriders, it’s producing champion humans.

ong, sandy, salty days at the beach without a care in the world. Trophies and surf-star heroes. It’s a grom’s life, and 8-year-old Tanner Sandvig can’t get enough.

“I like to watch professional surfers ride crazy barrels and complete big airs,” said Tanner, who holds guys like Kelly Slater and John John Florence in the highest esteem because “they ride in barrels that look like closeouts, but sometimes they do the impossible and come out.”

A second-grader at Palisades Elementary School, “I was 4 years old when I really started to pick up surfing,” he said.

Competing in his first Western Surfing Association season this year (he finished second), he also has plans to compete in the Waterman Tour in Tahiti, which is an endurance race that features stand-up paddling, prone paddling and swimming. It’s as much physical as it is mental.

“We are going on our first real surf trip to Tahiti in a couple of weeks,” Sandvig reveled. “In the next 10 years, I want to do surf trips around the world with my family and compete in competitions.” DP

Prioritizing Style Cosmic Creek ‘Retro Shred Revival’ celebrates 20-year anniversary at Salt Creek on June 2 and 3

pon inspection, the word “style” is not explicitly used anywhere on the World Surf League’s (WSL) website in reference to surfing judging criteria.

“Judges analyze the following elements when scoring waves: commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive maneuvers, combination of major maneuvers, variety of maneuvers and speed, power and flow,” the WSL website states.

Sure, it’s possible that “speed, power and flow,” could be interpreted as “style,” but that wasn’t enough for Dana Point Surf Club President Eric Diamond, who believed contemporary surfing had abandoned it’s prioritization of style, and 20 years ago, created what would become Dana Point Times June 1-7, 2018

an internationally celebrated event, the Cosmic Creek “Retro Shred Festival” at Salt Creek Beach Park.

Diamond explained that the idea for Cosmic Creek was born in the mid-1990s when Diamond noticed a lot of average surfers were being negatively impacted by the dramatically thin surfboards with a lot of rocker, surfboards ideal for perfect waves and world class surfers (i.e. not most Southern Californian’s surf experience). Walking through Flippy Hoffman’s warehouse one day, admiring the surf icon’s collection, Diamond said he had an epiphany.

“Wouldn’t it be cool to pay homage to all those shapers? To give people an opportunity to try all these wonderful designs that had basically been forgotten? Wouldn’t it be fun if you could pick, or be challenged by the luck of the draw, and surf those boards in a heat?” Diamond remembered.

The first event was held in 1997.

Now, 20 years later, more than 300 slots to compete in were filled in less than 24 hours.

Diamond affectionately calls the first day of the event, this year on Saturday, June 2, “local’s day.” Surfers will compete on boards selected from a pool of hundreds of past-era boards. The boards, selected at random, are compiled from Diamond’s personal collection, Vissla founder Paul Naude’s collection, other collectors and through boards brought by

competing surfers.

“When (Paul) came down and saw what we were doing, he started and has never stopped backing me,” Diamond said.

He noted Killer Dana Surf Shop as another sponsor since the origin of the event.

On Sunday, what Diamond referred to as “creators” heats will take to the water.

In these heats, more than a dozen shapers will take to the water on surfcrafts they shaped with their own hands in honor of the Steve Lis twin-fin fish, or Ben Aipa’s stinger surfboard design.

Diamond said the judges will be judging on a mixed criteria of progressive maneuvers as well as style true to the board’s form.

“Since this event is all about the 1970s and 1980s-era surfcraft, the standard contest judging criteria does not apply. The only standard is to the biggest wave, closest to the curl at the fastest speed with a refreshing emphasis on style,” a statement from last year’s Cosmic Creek’s judging criteria reads.

“We mix it up, we want some judges from the original era, and some guys from the new-school era with a fresh perspective,” Diamond said, explaining how the judges were selected.

As anyone who has attended a Cosmic Creek event before would know, the spirit of surfing and the surfboard craftsmanship extends from surf to the sand.

For instance, world-renowned artist and

filmmaker Thomas Campbell, a Dana Hills High School graduate, will be creating all the artwork for the event and site. More local artists will be onsite, including performances by bands TOPS, Night Beats, Seacliff, The Alive and Hypnosis.

Also a first this year, Diamond was excited to announce that a converted trailer will be onsite where local shapers such as Timmy Patterson, Tyler Warren, Donald Brink and Gary Larson will be shaping live for Cosmic Creek fans to enjoy.

On Saturday, there will also be a Bodysurfing Expression Session sponsored by DaFin with legendary Pipeline lifeguard and bodysurfer Mark Cunningham.

“When was the last time you saw the water cleared for four guys, all bodysurfing at Creek,” Diamond laughed, explaining that local lifeguards will be honored.

Cosmic Creek events have sprouted all over the world since the original’s inception—including Brazil, Spain and Australia—and Diamond said he can see Cosmic Creek events evolving to be full surfing festivals.

He believes remaining close to the core values is essential though.

“These events are about celebrating the surfboard and education. It’s getting a kid on a board older than he is, it’s telling him the story of how it was made, where it came from and who made it. It’s surfing, its surfboards, its music, its art,” Diamond said. DP www.danapointtimes.com
