Class of 2025

Dana Hills High School Class of 2025

The students of Dana Hills High School’s Class of 2025 bid farewell to the place they’ve called home for the past four years on Thursday, June 5. These individuals, who are among the last to embark on their high school journey amidst the challenging COVID-19 pandemic, walked across the stage with a sense of accomplishment, knowing they had triumphed as new graduates.

As they walked out onto the football field to the music of the Dana Hills Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by teacher James Caestecker, the students were surrounded by friends, family, and school staff who had cheered them on for the past four years.

Once all students were seated, Principal Brittany Casey welcomed the 433 graduating students and everyone in the stands.

“To the Dana Hills High School Class of 2025 – what a ride it’s been. This year, you’ve shown us what resilience, unity, and heart really look like. Who could forget that wild Homecoming halftime show? When the set broke mid-performance, students and staff literally ran onto the field to hold it up – together,” Casey said in her introductory remarks.

“That moment said everything about who we are: we show up, we step in, we hold each other up when it matters, and we keep going. When faced with challenges, you keep going ... and you excel.”

Associated Student Union President Sophie Davis then led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence in memory of Weston Fundner, a classmate who had passed away.

The singing of the National Anthem was followed by the South Orange County School of the Arts Jazz Choir, conducted by Ray Medina, and then a rendition of the song “In My Life” by The Beatles.

As the welcoming speeches concluded, the dignitaries rose to present the diplomas. Dignitaries and honorees presenting included Capistrano Unified School District Trustee Jennifer Adnams, Trustee Dr. Gary Prichard, Associate Superintendent of Education and Support Services Dr. Greg Merwin, Chief Technology Officer Stephanie Avera, Assistant Superintendent, Secondary Curriculum Meg Ervais, Niguel Hills Middle School Principal Jeff Jones, Laguna Niguel Mayor Pro Tem Foster “Gene” Johns, and Laguna Niguel Councilmember Stephanie Oddo.

With 433 diplomas handed out, it was time for the three student speakers to address their class. Student Marlena “Mars” O’Kane was the first to speak, followed by Scholar of Scholars Leah Gosney, and, finally, by the crowd favorite, student Sophia Sutherland, who was cheered off the stage with “MVP.” All three touched on the impact of the past four years and how much all the students have been able to grow into themselves.

As the ceremony drew to a close, it was time for the seniors to participate in the tradition of turning their tassels, led by Senior Class President Lolani Mae Bellon, to mark the end of the commemoration of their hard work. With that, graduation came to a close, friends embraced each other, and families rushed onto the field to congratulate their seniors.

Principal Brittany Casey’s Speech

To the Dana Hills High School Class of 2025 – what a ride it’s been.

This year, you’ve shown us what resilience, unity, and heart really look like. Who could forget that wild Homecoming halftime show? When the set broke mid-performance, students and staff literally ran onto the field to hold it up – together. That moment said everything about who we are: we show up, we step in, we hold each other up when it matters, and we keep going. When faced with challenges, you keep going … and you excel.

As athletes, you competed with fire and grit. You didn’t just chase wins – you created history, with every bus ride, every overtime, and every comeback.

As artists, you created stories and unforgettable moments that did and will continue to shape the world.

As scholars, you exceeded expectations, crushing AP tests, and as a class, raising state scores with a historic growth. And in between these highlights, you did face challenges, loss, and the kind of uncertainty that tests character. But, through it all, you chose to continue … to push through, and, above all, showed heart, and stuck it out – and you did it together. In a world that will often try to divide you, choose connection and to be kind. Acknowledge the humanity in everyone you meet, because you never know the weight someone else is carrying with them at that moment. Be there for one another, not just in the big moments, but in the quiet, in-between ones that really count.

And, finally, continue to lead with love and practice acceptance – acceptance of others and acceptance of yourself. Class of 2025, you’ve shown us what it means to lead with empathy and courage. You’ve inspired your school, your community, and your principal. And I have no doubt you’re going to go out into the world and continue to inspire. Congratulations, Dolphins. We are proud of you. We believe in you. Now go show the world what Dana Hills is made of. Thank you.

DANA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

Tartans Forever!

Dana Hills High School Commencement Speaker: Marlena “Mars” O’Kane

Greetings, faculty, family, esteemed guests, and Class of 2025!

For most of us, today is the most eventful day of our lives so far, the monumental turning point. But right now, I want you to imagine it’s an even bigger deal; it’s not just graduation – it’s New Years Eve.

We’re nearing midnight, 11:59, just a few moments before the new year begins. Shoulder to shoulder, dressed to impress, and of course the Times Square crystal ball suspended in the air. The past 4 years have been our 365 days (really 720 if you’re counting): filled with highs, lows, all-nighters cramming, 7 a.m. Celsius, and maybe one too many fights over cafeteria bagels. So we start to reminisce and count down.

10 – Remember freshman year? Still wearing masks, trudging out to Africa for history, freaking out too much over sports tryouts and auditions, and acting like the Sodastream was a saint; we were young, making mistakes, learning.

9

– Sophomore year – we locked in. Putting freshman drama aside, we became close with our permanent friends. We struggled through making our four-year plans, and we found out what classes to take, and which to be wary of.

8

– Then came junior year; to no surprise, the Oxford word of the year was “brain rot,” and it sure felt like it. Future plans, AP Tests, CASP tests, SAT and ACT tests, and of course … more tests. But still, we never backed down and never gave up.

7

– Senior year, the final chapter: one part college application stress, one part senioritis. I know most of us feel like we already dropped the ball, or at least started our countdowns the

moment second semester began, but through all those Thursday academic warning emails, we made it.

6, 5, 4 – We’ve counted down together through demanding deadlines, daily discussions, and daring dreams.

3… 2… 1 – Happy Graduation!

Just like New Year’s Eve, graduation is the end of one year, and the beginning of something new. This little poof of confetti might not be as grand as that in Times Square, but our futures are glimmering as if it were all around us. Some of us will be headed to college, others into the workforce, the military, gap years — or new paths waiting to be created.

But no matter where we go, we carry this past “year” – our high school experience – with us. We carry the friendships, the lessons, the awkward moments, and the growth. Every night I’ve spent in the Porthole far too late, every day I’ve spent surviving off lukewarm Red Bulls, I discovered my values, my identity, my passion, and I know each and every one of us have had similar discoveries. And those discoveries, that experience, we use to make our New Year’s resolutions, those brilliant, high-up goals we dream of achieving, and we make them come true.

So, let’s raise a toast. Not just to our futures, but to every moment that shaped them. Every failure that taught us, every teacher who believed in us, every conversation that reminded us we are not alone. Here’s a toast to ourselves, to our New Year. (Cheers!)

Dana Hills High School Commencement Speaker: Leah Gosney

Good afternoon. Before I begin, I’d like to express my gratitude towards my parents, especially my mom, because I wouldn’t be standing here today without their support.

Though I don’t necessarily know all of you, and many of you may not know me, hi, I’m Leah, and we went to high school together. We all walked through those doors 1,388 days ago and walked past one another in the halls every day. We each have different lives, diverse backgrounds, identities, passions, and distinctively unique futures, but despite all of these differences, our lives have all crossed paths here, at Dana Hills High School, and we are gathered here today to celebrate our accomplishments.

Standing here, I represent the tremendous growth that has occurred in each and every one of us over the last four years. We’ve grown academically, from freshman year biology and algebra to college level coursework, and we’ve gained the skills necessary to succeed in further education. But we’ve also grown socially and emotionally. Personally, I’ve gone from finding the courage to raise my hand and speak in class to being able to stand up and speak here in front of you all. We’ve matured from restless freshmen and blossomed into strong, smart, and capable young adults.

Today does not represent an ending, but rather the beginning of a bright future. We are merely opening and stepping through the door between youth and adulthood, and although the uncertainty of the future can make us afraid, there is much to be excited about. Think

about all of the years we have left to live and all of the experiences we have yet to know. Up until now, our lives have been fairly predictable. After one test comes another and after one grade level comes the next. But now, we get to live our lives with more discretion, with endless potential and the freedom to direct our futures. We get to use all of the lessons that we learned and the skills that we’ve acquired in the last four years to follow our passions.

I know that I’m not the smartest or wisest person here, but one thing that I do know is that everyone graduating today has the potential to achieve their dreams and to be exceptional. But it’s easier said than done. The real challenge lies in recognizing this and living our lives every day with success in mind. Achieving success looks different for everyone here, but it involves perseverance, dedication, and discipline even in the face of failure and discouragement. It involves pressing onward and pushing ourselves no matter what life throws at us and no matter what mistakes we make. Mistakes aren’t indicative of failure; they only become dangerous when they turn into regrets that distract us from our dreams.

One of my favorite song lyrics from singer/songwriter Lorde is “Everybody wants the best for you, but you gotta want it for yourself.” Everyone here today – parents, siblings, teachers, and classmates – have supported us and helped us make it to this moment right here. So let’s make them, along with our future selves, proud by achieving our own personal best.

Congratulations to the Dana Hills High School Class of 2025!

Dana Hills High School Commencement Speaker: Sophia Sutherland

Hello, Class of 2025 and honored guests. We did it!

Since we were freshmen at Dana Hills High School, I think we have learned a lot. Well, most of us have. The rest of you might truly be a little sus! We will always remember the day our homecoming set broke on this field and the way everyone came together to fix it. So amazing! We were the last class required to wear masks at Dana thanks to COVID, and I certainly don’t miss them, because the only way I know people are around me is if they talk to me because I’m blind, and those masks did not make it easy to communicate. It certainly forced me to find my voice and make it loud, so I didn’t get lost in the shuffle.

I was the first student in a wheelchair to perform on the Porthole stage. I’m sorry if I ran over anyone’s feet these last four years, but they’ll never pin the fire alarms on me, though, cause I legitimately couldn’t see what I was grabbing. Just kidding!

You know, it’s been a struggle at times to get up the ramps in my wheelchair, and I’m certain all of you have had your own unique struggles during these past four years, but if I can do it, then I know you can, too! So, find your voice and honor it as you helped me to find mine.

I will treasure the many fun moments at Dana Hills High School thanks to my friends, support staff, as well as the teachers and admin who have supported me through all of it and made it fun. Just know that because I knew you, I have been changed for good. If you don’t know where that quote is from, in six more months you will, and if you still don’t, then you

need more theatre in your life. Let’s conquer the world, Class of 2025! And for one last time, hey, Dana, how do you feel?

For over 50 years, Capistrano Valley Christian Schools has been dedicated to providing educational excellence in a Christ-centered environment. We equip students with credentialed teachers and championship level coaches who genuinely care, ensuring they are fully prepared for life and leadership.
