saturday 9 NOVEMBERDOORS 2.30PM. STARTS AT 3PM. TICKETS: £4 VENUE: HMS CAROLINE

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped - and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people.

Showboat at the Hms Caroline Directed By: James Whale. 1936. Runtime: 110 minutes.

SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER. DOORS 6.30PM. STARTS AT 7PM. TICKETS £6/4 VENUE: HMS CAROLINE

This second film version of the Hammerstein musical is considered by many film buffs to be the best of the three. Irene Dunne, falls for riverboat gambler Gaylord Ravenal and, after a flirtation by duet, she takes the stage with him as her leading man, against the wishes of a mother who wants to keep her far away from the “wicked stage” of show business. Great moments such as Paul Robeson doing “Old Man River,’’ Morgan singing her unforgettable “Bill,’’. Originally an Edna Ferber novel; Hammerstein also wrote the screenplay. Thanks to Director James Whale, all these talented people move quite naturally within the story, and don’t give you the feeling that they are merely specialty performers waiting to jump into their acts. In Disney’s beguiling animated romp, rebellious 16-year-old mermaid Ariel is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter. This was the rebirth of Disney in the modern era and due to superb songs, enduring humour and a touching plot it remains an animation classic.

Directed By:Sam Wood. 1935. Runtime:92 minutes

The Marx Brothers run amuck on a boat and in the world of opera when Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) meets aspiring singer Ricardo, who is determined to win the love of fellow performer Rosa. Aided by Fiorello (Chico Marx) and Tomasso (Harpo Marx), Otis attempts to unite the young couple, but faces opposition from the preening star Lassparri, who also has his sights on Rosa. It is impossible to explain why that is so funny; their sheer irreverence, exuberance and verbal comic genius are marvelous. Peter Bradshaw. Lorelei Lee is a beautiful showgirl engaged to be married to the wealthy Gus Esmond, much to the disapproval of Gus’ rich father, Esmond Sr., who thinks that Lorelei is just after his money. When Lorelei goes on a cruise accompanied only by her best friend, Dorothy Shaw, Esmond Sr. hires Ernie Malone, a private detective, to follow her and report any questionable behavior that would disqualify her from the marriage.
