A message from... Elaine Bleazard, Santander
My first experience of Hannahs was almost a year ago when I was lucky enough to spend some time with the children and young adults who attend Hannahs school in Ivybridge. Santander Foundation had recently awarded Hannahs a grant to be used towards developing their Sensory Room. My visit enabled me to get a really good idea of how the grant money was going to be used. On reflection, prior to my visit, my knowledge of Hannahs was limited. I had looked on Hannahs website and had read about their dedication to empowering, advocating and enriching the lives of children, young people and adults with a range of disabilities. During my visit I could see and feel all of these things and more…. My visit left me feeling inspired to support this wonderful charity. I am really fortunate that my role as Branch Director in Santander enables me to work with Plymouth’s local community, and whilst Santander Foundation had provided Hannahs with the grant, I just knew that the people who work in Santander would really love to get more involved. I was right!

Over the past year we have helped in several ways. We have been able to support with fundraising and are lucky that Santander will match the money that has been fundraised by its staff. I also took for granted how important time and manpower can be. Three of my team spent a day painting the school’s music room. We were even able to provide some of the paint! The team had a fabulous, fun day and felt such a sense of achievement. During 2015 my team have more events planned. We feel privileged that we are involved and can make a contribution to a charity that transforms lives. About Hannahs
Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, or Hannahs as we are known, is a pioneering charity that has worked with, and championed, disadvantaged and vulnerable children, young people and adults with a range of disabilities for more than 240 years. We were founded in 1767 through the generous legacy of Dame Hannah Rogers, the wife of a Plymouth MP who had a passion for working with children. Although our proud history has always been varied, the aim has been simple: to help enrich and empower the lives of children and adults in need. Since first opening in 1925 as the UK’s first orthopaedic hospital at Ivybridge, we opened the doors to support children with cerebral palsy and since then Hannahs at Ivybridge has gone from strength to strength. The site at Ivybridge is a Centre of Excellence and home to our School, Respite Centre, Community Hub, Children’s Home and Hannahwood – an innovative transition project for 19-25 year olds. Hannahs acquired Seale-Hayne and in May 2010 we opened our social enterprise to the public. The 92 acre site provides innovative and ground breaking facilities for people with disabilities once they reach adulthood. With an outdoor pursuits centre, recording studios, sensory music room, a farm, a gallery, a bistro, workshops, vocational

courses and learning placements, it is a place of true integration and imagination. We also have our ground-breaking clinical outreach service. We are now able to offer a range of accessible accommodation, providing desperately needed breaks for young people and their families in this beautiful site. We have a family apartment, en suite bedrooms and glamping lodges and visitors have access to all the facilities on site as well as support staff. None of this would have been possible without the continued help of our supporters and volunteers so thank you for all of your support!

Sound Harp Two young men from the WESC Foundation, the Specialist Centre for Visual Impairment in Exeter, made a wonderful sound harp out of steel with the help of resident blacksmith Rob Hills.
Lifestyles A group from Lifestyles, the South Hams based charity, successfully completed a six week bespoke course “Introduction to Crafts for Business� and were presented with certificates at a special ceremony.
Francis Maude MP Visit The Rt Hon Francis Maude MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, visited Seale-Hayne on his tour of the South West and really enjoyed meeting Hannahs guests and volunteers.
Any Questions BBC Radio 4 broadcast their iconic programme Any Questions? live from SealeHayne. Jonathan Dimbleby hosted a lively debate and was joined by MPs Diane Abbot, Simon Hughes, Dominic Grieve and Douglas Carswell.
Seale-Hayne Architect Visit Seale-Hayne architect Isobel Croydon visited recently with her two sons and grandson. She and her husband Tom were responsible for many of the architectural drawings for Seale-Hayne. She has donated her original drawings to Hannahs.

Eclipse Disco Hannahs hosted the most unusual disco ever on the morning of the solar eclipse. When earth blocked out 94% of the sun, staff and visitors at Seale-Hayne boogied on down to eclipse-themed tunes provided by Access All Aerials.
Newsflash Ivybridge
Day at the Races Our Hannahwood young adults continue to get out and about and they recently went to Exeter Races. The weather was lovely and they even won some money on the horses! Pancake Day A strong team from Hannahs Ivybridge took part in the pancake races at Seale-Hayne on Shrove Tuesday. Alot of competitive fun was had by all! Pony Access Simon Mulholland from Pony Access brought his pony Obama to Hannahs Ivybridge recently following the success of the Hannahwood trips to the beach with them last summer. The iBex Saddlechariot enabled our young adults to go for rides around the field.

Living Eggs There was great excitement recently when Living Eggs arrived at school. And even more excitement when the eggs started to hatch and 9 fluffy chicks arrived! Living Eggs Ready Hatch is a two week comprehensive programme providing all you need for hatching chicks in schools. Sensory Christmas Market Staff and students at Hannahs Ivybridge chose a new way to celebrate Christmas with a wonderful Sensory Market. They had worked hard all term to create a range of festive crafts and edible treats which they sold to friends and family before singing carols round the tree. PAT Dog PAT Dog Harmony has been coming to Ivybridge for a year now and is proving very popular with the students who really benefit from spending time with her.
My Hannahs Dean Mottershead I have been working at Seale-Hayne for about three years both as a volunteer and member of staff. I get involved in many activities ranging from Friday Night Out and Access All Aerials to working in the Gallery or Souk. I just like being at Seale-Hayne as it’s hugely rewarding. I love that I can set my own goals then take great satisfaction in breaking through them. I love working at Hannahs and I hope to be at Seale-Hayne for many many more years. I love reading and writing and my dream is that one day my book will be on book shelves at Seale-Hayne! Dean interviewed volunteer Chris Newton I have been working at Seale-Hayne since November 2014. I am involved in several projects including volunteer recruitment, marketing and working with Hannahs Rangers, Moor Trees and Farm-able. Hannahs is a fantastic place to volunteer! The work we all do here is genuinely confidence building which makes me and many others feel good about ourselves. At the end of the day you know you have made a real difference. I love helping others and of course meeting new people is always fun as well as learning ‘from and with them’. I have a form of ABI and learning disability. Hannahs really supports people like me with a lifelong disability offering gainful employment, a purposeful existence and ultimately respect for the individual as a person and not a label. The staff and guests at Hannahs are really inspirational people. If I had to use a single word to describe the Hannahs experience it would be… REWARDING!

Dan Hoare Hannahs at Seale-Hayne has been a lifeline for me. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and my life was turned upside down. I was actively seeking somewhere to go to socialise and gain support when someone recommended Hannahs at Seale-Hayne. I cant believe how lucky I am to have found such a wonderful place. I now access the services at Seale-Hayne every week and am able to take part in a range of activities. At Seale-Hayne I have found friendship, safety and the chance to do things. I get to socialise, do hydrotherapy and archery and I love it. I regularly go to Friday Night Out where I can socialise and enjoy music. I also access the respite accommodation at Seale-Hayne in order to give my carer Tony time off. I have gained lifelong friends and a huge support network at Seale-Hayne. I feel that I have become an integral part of the Hannahs Team and I feel extremely valued.

Antiques Valuation Evening Our supremely dedicated group of fundraising volunteers organised a fantastic Antiques Valuation Evening at Hannahs at Ivybridge, in March 2015. The ladies put on a superb evening, with drinks and canapés, and the exciting Chair Quiz. They’d like to say a huge thank you to Charles Lanning and Laura Smith of Bonhams, for giving up their time to come and value everyone’s antiques, and to Richard Hosking for doing a wonderful job as presenter! The evening raised a wonderful £711.50. Keep an eye out for posters in your local area, and on our website and social media pages for future events.
A Huge Thank You to our Friends at Santander, Plymouth! Staff at Santander, Plymouth have been busy fundraising to help fund a new sensory room in Hannahwood, Hannahs young adult provision in Ivybridge. The team organised and ran a Christmas stall and sold prize draw tickets in aid of Hannahs which raised over £1500. Thank you from us all at Hannahs!

Skydive for Free and Raise Money for Hannahs! Tick something off your ‘bucket-list’, and do something amazing for Hannahs, by taking part in our August skydive! Our March skydive was a huge success, and now we’re looking for our next team of daredevils. All we ask is that you raise a minimum of £395 in sponsorship money. This means that you jump for free, and in turn we’ll receive an average donation of £195. Every extra pound that you raise over that £395 minimum comes straight to Hannahs. Our next tandem jump will be on Saturday 8 August 2015, with two timeslots: 10am or 2pm. It will be held at Dunkeswell Airfield, near Honiton – the only place in the UK where you can skydive from 15,000ft! 10 | Hannah Time

Charity Shops Volunteers Brian Hurt Brian has been our volunteer manager of the Hannahs shop in Estover for 10 years. He first joined the volunteer fundraising team in April 2004 and soon took on the responsibility for the shop which opened in February 2005. In total he has 24 parttime volunteers helping him including five members of his original team.

JUNK: Rubbish to Gold Hannahs has teamed up with a project called JUNK: Rubbish to Gold. We are collecting broken and unsellable jewellery for the Birmingham School of Jewellery to turn into new objects. These pieces will be sold with a proportion of the funds returned to the Trust. Ivybridge Adult Care Hannahs Adult Care services have seen demand continue to grow apace. Hannahwood Mews is the newest development and registration has just been confirmed for 12 adults with half the building being made residential and the other half respite.
New Education Model of Assessment The young people who attend the school at Hannahs at Ivybridge have very complex needs which are met with holistic and integrated support from a large multi disciplinary team. This includes teachers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, nurses, education and care support staff as well as other professionals who also contribute. As part of Hannahs commitment to looking at innovative ways of working we have developed a new way of assessing the progress of our young people. With the introduction of a new “Progress Passport” we now record all progress made throughout all aspects of everyday life such as using a switch to make a choice. Ofsted (October2014) commented positively on the model and stated that “small gains in pupils’ learning are captured and their achievements valued”. The use of this model of learning means that it is unique to each young person and most importantly learning is fun as the various displays around the school show! 12 | Hannah Time
Hannahwood Transitions consists of five bungalows with 23 adults living in them. In this area they are being prepared for a more independent life. Recently CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspected Hannahwood Transitions and gave every aspect a rating of Good. This covered a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led service. Arthur, Hannahs house in Park Street, Ivybridge has proved a great success. Six adults have been living there for 18 months and have been able to enjoy a more independent life within the community. Tutors from City College Plymouth continue to run the three year Independent Living Skills course in Hannahwood which many young adults have already completed. New Sensory Room Staff in Hannahwood have worked really hard over the last two years to fundraise for a much needed new sensory room. With the help of local businesses such as Santander in Plymouth the room is now complete. Everything in the room can be controlled through switches, iPad and a magic dice!
Seale-Hayne courses, construction of shelters, hedge laying, land clearance and building raised beds. They also work on external projects for English Heritage, the National Trust and local councils.
Estate Management The 92 acre site at Seale-Hayne has 65 acres of farmland and plenty of potential and exciting plans for the estate are well under way. Hannahs has recognised the need for an accessible trail on Howton Down hill, the area above the main buildings, so that people with disabilities will be able to access and appreciate the stunning views, woodland walks, wildflower meadows, sculpture trail, performance space and leisure. Volunteers have been working with Moor Trees and planting Devon Oak Woodland species on 32 acres of Howton Down and this will be completed in the winter of 2015/16. The Quarry and Quarry Field will be an area of sensitive development, to maintain its natural character, for bushcrafts, camping and outdoor pursuits. Other plans include a natural amphitheatre for performance or music festivals, a fruit orchard and gardens and a community hub for Hannahs Farm and Horticulture. Hannahs Rangers Hannahs Rangers is a newly formed group of people who are responsible for conservation and estate management at Seale-Hayne. They work with Hannahs guests and volunteers on projects such as deer fencing, building outdoor pursuits

Reach The Reach service offers a comprehensive service of assessment, intervention, consultancy, advice and support for individuals with neuro- disabilities and their families. In the last year this has particularly focussed on children with neuro-developmental difficulties who are suffering with emotional and behavioural problems which are disrupting their home and school life. We have been able to offer support to a number of families by identifying the underlying difficulty (e.g. autism) and helping support the parents to communicate with the schools and local authorities to enable them to access funding and increase support for their child. In addition we have attended a number of conferences where Dr James Tonks (Head of Reach) has spoken about our research. Simon Curtis (Occupational Therapist) has begun to offer sensory assessments and interventions for individuals with sensory processing difficulties. Marie-Claire Reville is pioneering Lego Therapy for individuals with social communication difficulties and we are also introducing CogMed working memory training.
Arts RECENT EXHIBITIONS PROJECT LYDOS BP Portrait Award Winner and Robert Lenkiewicz’s pupil, Louise Courtnell, held an exhibition entitled Project Lydos, a series of 50 oil paintings of two generations of local people from the twin fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, all born between 1910 and 1944. She also gave two excellent portrait demonstrations at Seale-Hayne. FANTASY PHOTOGRAPHY Local photographic artist Vicki Boulter brought her unique work to Hannahs at Seale-Hayne. Her exhibition of Avant Garde work comprised a series of powerful images created through a mixed medium of photography and digital art. Her work ranges from digital artistry to kids fantasy portraiture to beauty.
MAKING MONDAYS Making Mondays is a series of courses for people of all abilities being held in the Art Room and Experience Warehouse. Weaving and Willow work are the first two creative activities being offered.

COURSES AND SESSIONS Resident and local artists and craftspeople have been running some excellent courses and weekly sessions and more are planned throughout the year. The courses have included weaving with Noni Mackenzie, papier mache with Philippa Newport and mixed clay ceramic pieces for a pop-up touring exhibition ’30 Million Years in the Making’ with Mandy Briscoe and Johanna Korndorfer.

Hannahs has two brand new performing arts activities beginning soon. HANNAHS THEATRE COMPANY This is aimed at developing a wide range of original and fully integrated drama work. We will be using movement and voice work, music and storytelling skills to create everything from solo pieces and small ensemble productions to street theatre and large theatrical performances. People will have the chance to collaborate with other theatre companies, artists, writers and musicians to produce innovative, and challenging drama. HANNAHS PRODUCTION COMPANY People will be able to take part in making props, designing sets and costumes, sound and lighting, creating special effects, event organisation, front of house and backstage management. This is a great opportunity to find out how the magic on stage really happens.
EDEN PROJECT ARTIST Textile artist Rebecca Harris spent a day at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne working on a life size human figure textile wall-hanging for the Eden Project’s latest exhibition ‘Invisible Me: The Human Microbiome’. www.discoverhannahs.org
DANCE SESSIONS Hannahs already has a successful regular dance session where people are learning performing and improvisation skills as well as building confidence and fitness. The group works with professional choreographers to produce original dance sequences and movement work. Camp Mawazo
Camp Mawazo hosts a variety of fun, exciting and awesome outdoor activities! We can provide action-packed, adrenaline fuelled sessions or alternatively we also offer more relaxed and sedate activity sessions. No matter what adventure you are looking for, Camp Mawazo will be the experience the whole group talks about all year! We utilise the whole of the beautiful 92 acre site here at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne which allows all our groups to get the real outdoor experience in a safe and controlled environment. We have adaptive equipment available allowing all abilities to take part in
the activity together at the same time. Our specialist knowledge and experience allows us to provide exciting, fun, safe and amazing activity sessions! Activities include laser combat, cycling, tricycling, archery, scooters, bushcraft, air pistol, air rifle and many more!
Health & Wellbeing Hannahs Health & Wellbeing Centre is home to one of the region’s only fully accessible hydrotherapy pools open to members of the public. The heated pool is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, allowing everyone to enjoy the benefits of exercise in warm water. It is safe for non-swimmers and a great way to relieve pain, improve mobility or just relax. The facility is open every day from 9am7pm (9am-5pm Sunday) with a range of classes and sessions to suit everyone. Open Sessions (lifeguard) £10, Ten Swim Card £90, Group Sessions (exclusive use) £75, Booked Sessions for individuals and carers £10 Classes and Sessions Eau-Chi is one of a range of classes and sessions taking place regularly in the Hydrotherapy Pool as well as Water Babies, Little Fishes, Ladies Only and individual sessions. Eau-Chi is a gentle relaxation, breathing and movement class pioneered at Hannahs Seale-Hayne. It is based on Tai16 | Hannah Time

Music The rehearsal rooms up at Big Red are busier than ever with rooms fully booked most evenings and gradually getting busier throughout the daytime. Our accessible friendly rehearsal rooms are the perfect way for anyone and everyone to come and enjoy making as much noise as possible without the neighbours complaining! We have full backline available for hire including drum kits, guitar amps, bass amps and microphones. We have just had a new recording studio added to Big Red which is a massive step forward for us. The studio comprises a large versatile Live room, vocal booth and isolated drum room as well as a full professional spec control room. We continue to offer both creative and
professional opportunities to people with disabilities of all kinds. We are dedicated to breaking down and rebuilding common perceptions regarding what disabled people can and cant do in a real music industry environment. Every week we have several groups and individuals coming to music sessions in Big Red and the Yellow Rooms at Seale-Hayne and the benefits and rewards are wonderful to see.
Horticulture Over the winter horticulture sessions were in full swing and we welcomed new guests. Activities included Christmas garden-related craft and the production of nesting boxes, bug boxes and bird feeders which have brought more wildlife into the garden. Sowing of seed for 2015 began in January and is now in full swing with new shoots emerging in the polytunnel every morning. The spring bulbs planted by the team over the last couple of years are peeking out bringing the first touches of spring colour. Spring is a fabulous time in the garden as it transforms every day. The brick-housed spring which will be the source of most of our water this year is well on in the process of renovation. of new vegetable beds have been dug and vegetables and flower seedlings are on sale direct from the polytunnel. The team of volunteers in horticulture has expanded and it is thanks to them that the pond is beautifully clear and full of frogspawn, newts and water beetles.

Access All Aerials
Dean Mottershead is a regular contributor to Hannahs radio station Access All Aerials. He talks to us about his experience: “I am sitting in the Access All Aerials studio waiting for the Record button to be pressed before we go live. Brandon is making a joke with Oli and Rowan is laughing. It occurs to me what an amazing unique project we are working on. Which other studio works in such an organic and natural way? Which other station can friends of the hosts turn up with an idea for a show and within a few minutes find themselves in front of a computer speaking to the world? The other day I invited a guest into the studio to make a show. At first he struggled to express to me the songs he wanted to hear but then as he heard the songs going out he gained so much more confidence. Watching his face light up as Michael Jackson sang Billy Jean was amazing as he relaxed and enjoyed the experience. For me that is exactly what Access All Aerials is about! It’s only when you look back on events like these that you realise what we have achieved. I would like to highlight some of these amazing achievements: Over 700 shows averaging about 1-2 hours each; over 62,000 listeners; 163 followers (spreaker); 187 facebook members; more than 30 DJ’s and co-hosts; two 24 hour marathons raising nearly £1000; regular listeners from all around the world.
Friday Night Out Now in its third year, Friday Night Out is one of Seale-Hayne’s longest running social events. Host Dean Mottershead reflects: “It’s amazing that FNO has been going three years. It’s been a roller coaster with its ups and downs but we have stuck at it and pulled through. I hope that we will be still going in another 3 years or even another 30! The initial concept of FNO was to

provide a social event on site for people beyond the normal 9-5 and I am very proud and protective of this project. My dream was to make it an event that is moulded by those who attend it. I am always open to ideas. People have asked if we can extend to other nights and if the demand is there the short answer is YES!
Accessible Accommodation Hannahs has recently introduced a range of accessible accommodation at Seale-Hayne, including: Accessible glamping units (sleep 6) Two wonderful luxury, fully wheelchair accessible safari tents. Short break accessible family apartment (sleeps 5) Located in a wonderfully quiet and beautiful area of the site. Respite accommodation Short break accommodation with 6 respite beds, 4 rooms for carers / family members and a social lounge and kitchen area. Guests at Seale-Hayne are welcome to take full advantage of all the facilities on site. All income generated goes back into the Trust.
Clare’s House Clare’s House was owned by Clare Milne, the granddaughter of AA Milne, and is now managed by the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, made possible thanks to the generosity of the Clare Milne Trust. Clare’s House is a fully accessible 4 bedroom home just a few minutes from the sea at Ladram Bay, Devon. Surrounded by over an acre of land, it has an undercover, heated hydrotherapy pool for the private use of guests. We want to embrace all of this energy, interest and momentum to create a community of people (Generation h) who can see the person and not the disability, something that people can sign up to, engage with, and feel a part of something very special! Generation h includes all our visitors, staff, supporter groups, ambassadors, parents, students and guests who access services with Hannahs as well as our valued volunteers.

Marcia Wolstencroft (Vice Chair) A retired Head Teacher, Marcia has over 40 years experience in the education sector, which has included working in an advisory capacity to Devon County Council as well as spending time as an Ofsted Inspector.
Judith Waterfield (Vice Chair) Judith is Head of Disability ASSIST Services at the University of Plymouth, leading a large team providing support to students with physical and learning difficulties. Maureen Grimley Maureen has worked predominantly in the social work field and has considerable and extensive experience in child protection and safeguarding.
Ginnie Hale Ginnie worked as a Speech and Language Therapist for 35 years, and was Head of Department firstly at Guy’s Hospital in London and then at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
5 years on... Hannahs is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the opening of Seale-Hayne as a ground breaking centre which offers people of all abilities the opportunity to train, learn, have fun and fulfil their true potential without judgment or limit. Over 800 people with disabilities and their families are supported at Seale-Hayne each year. Every week 162 guests access 305 sessions including art, music, outdoor pursuits and horticulture. Over 100,000 people from both the local community and further afield use the facilities such as arts, live music, recording studio, outdoor pursuits, health and wellbeing centre, shops, bistro, farm, artists’ studios, concerts, conferences and weddings. Banksy and Matisse have featured in art exhibitions, famous musicians such as Ben Howard and These Reigning Days have used the recording studios and the Military Wives have performed in concerts. From the official opening by HRH The Princess Royal to the Olympic Torch ceremony some memorable events have taken place at Seale-Hayne alongside great achievements. The site was awarded the Social Enterprise Mark which recognises our commitment to disability employment and provision of integrated services. SealeHayne also won the Herald Express Business Excellence Award for Social Enterprise and Community Impact and was runner up in the Business Growth category. Summer of Art – Urban Takeover was shortlisted for the Herald Express Tourism Event of the Year Award. 2012 saw the launch of Access All Aerials, Hannahs very own radio station, which is run by people with a range of disabilities. The following year Hannahs launched a new service called REACH which is the only service of its kind offering a comprehensive

service of assessment, diagnosis and support for individuals with a range of neurodisabilities and support needs including Autism, acquired brain injury, mental health and cerebral palsy. Hannahs now offers an extensive range of accessible accommodation including the stunning glamping units. This enables young people and their families to take desperately needed breaks. Hannahs is lucky to have major corporate supporters including Midas, Bond Dickinson, First Great Western, PriceWaterHouse Coopers, Santander Plymouth, Chris Kallis Solicitors, Tone Leisure, Lacey, Hickie & Caley, Mount Kelly College, SW Law, Devon and Cornwall Business Council, Mole Valley Farmers, South West Water, Lloyds Bank, EE, Met Office, Wrigley’s and Nationwide Building amongst others. Hannahs has also teamed up with Duchy College to provide students with learning disabilities a qualification in “horticulture, greenwood and enterprise” and they have been busy making beautiful greenwood products that are then sold in our shops. Other regular courses and sessions for people with a range of disabilities take place every week. Five years on and Hannahs is proud to say that Seale-Hayne is well established as a place of true integration and imagination where disability is incidental.
