ome A warm welc e to Hannah Tim Welcome to our special “Thank You” edition of Hannah Time full of amazing and inspirational stories from the crazy, wonderful world of Hannahs, what a year it has been! Challenging the status quo and proving the impossible is possible is something we have been doing at Hannahs for nearly 250 years. Whether it is helping a child to walk for the first time, giving them a voice through the use of communication aids or organising a Norweigan cruise to fulfil a young person’s dream our aim is to ensure that every child and young person we support is able to live life to the full - no barriers allowed! Our staff team is incredibly committed to this vision and work over and above to make this happen and we are lucky to have them. If you have a disability and are vulnerable there is often a mountain to climb; usually every single day of your life. However, I have learnt that the single biggest issue that can make all of this much worse and put people at risk is loneliness. It is heart wrenching that the basic desire of having somewhere to live, something to do and someone to love is so much harder yet would make so much difference. A sense of belonging, fun and laughter, a listening ear, friends, respect and understanding; it’s not much to ask is it?

This edition is our way of us all saying thank you to you, our friends, and showing you how your contribution, whether it is time or money, has changed the lives of so many. We have set up small businesses, taken young people on trips of a lifetime, attended festivals, walked on fire (yes me too!), gone sailing, scaled dizzy heights when abseiling, given the local girls football team a run for their money, enjoyed a girls shopping trip to London and set up and run a radio station to name just a few. I hope you enjoy this edition and thank you again from the bottom of my heart for your continued support. We still have so many ideas and dreams to fulfil but we need those funds so if you are able to support our Winter Appeal you can find more information on page 22.

Thank you from everyone here at Hannahs...together we can change the world!

Bronwen Hewitt, CEO

Experiences Thanks to our generous supporters, Hannahs guests from SealeHayne and the young people from Ivybridge are able to go out and enjoy the same experiences as other people of their age. You are helping us to make the impossible possible...

Sailing

Thanks to Horizons Sailing Charity our young adults from Hannahwood went on regular sailing trips around Plymouth Sound on a specially adapted boat. They were even able to try their hands at steering, chatted to members of the RNLI lifeboat and watched the Navy practise their helicopter landing - they even took a dog on board! They were also lucky enough to go out on the boat to watch the National Firework Championships from the water. 4

Burrator adventures

There have been several visits to Burrator on Dartmoor where the South West Lakes staff have been incredibly helpful and taken the young adults off on adventures along the old railway track.

Football fans

Sarah and Hannah from Hannahwood went along to Torquay Academy to join the Torquay United Ladies Team in training. The girls were given a signed shirt and have been invited back for more training and to watch matches.

Sports

Many of the students and young adults from Hannahs Ivybridge have been on trips to the Life Centre in Plymouth for a range of sports activities. They loved getting out of their wheelchairs to go abseiling.

Seaside trips

Trips with Pony Access have always been very popular with our young people at Hannahs Ivybridge. Simon and his pony Obama have taken several of them for a paddle in the sea at Exmouth using their saddle chariot. Pony Access makes any terrain accessible to wheelchairs.

Beavers

Hannahs student Jemima goes to Beavers every week and really thrives doing a range of activities with other children her age. The Beavers are the youngest members of the Scouting family. 5

Experiences

Exploring Exmoor

A group went on holiday to Calvert Trust Exmoor which enables people with physical, learning, behavioural and sensory disabilities to experience exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activities. They tried out all the activities including abseiling, boating and archery. 6

Holidays

Hannahwood young adults have been able to go on some wonderful trips and stay in fully accessible places including a cruise ship in Norway. Meanwhile our guests from SealeHayne have been enjoying trips closer to home at Center Parcs in Longleat.

Santa Fun Run

Race for Life

Every year a group from Hannahs Ivybridge takes part in the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK.

For the last few years Saltram Rotary, who organise the Santa Fun Run each Christmas, have chosen Hannahs as one of the beneficiary charities. A group from Hannahs Ivybridge have taken part and thoroughly enjoyed being part of the local Santa community! 7

Enterprises at Hannahs Ruairi Corr’s angels Ruairi Corr must be our busiest guest at Seale-Hayne. Ruairi is visually impaired and started coming to Seale-Hayne while he attended the WESC Foundation in Exeter. Last summer he left WESC and started at Seale-Hayne full-time. His five days a week are packed with a huge range of activities. He takes part in horticulture, land skills, carpentry, bushcraft, outdoor activities as well as helping out on the Access All Aerials radio station. When he first started coming to Seale-Hayne from WESC it was purely to work with resident blacksmith Rob Hills on metalwork projects. Over the last few years he has made a giant robot, giant wind chime and sound harp. More recently he has made a broomstick featured in the Harry Potter exhibition and a hydrophone - a water based musical instrument and a money box. However, the most popular project he has completed is his angel. No sooner had he made one than friends and family were commissioning him to make more and he has now completed 15 angels altogether.

8

“I love coming to SealeHayne because I get to do so many activities and I have made quite a few friends. Being here every day means that I am always busy”. When he is not at Seale-Hayne Ruairi, who lives in Exmouth, still keeps busy as he loves to go metal detecting on the beach and he has now been going to Exmouth Archery for 10 years. The one moment of his week when he relaxes is when he goes to yoga. Ruairi is not only a busy man but also a good businessman!

Access All Aerials

Hannahwood Radio

Access All Aerials, Hannahs own community radio station, is run by a group of people with a wide range of disabilities. Broadcast from SealeHayne via the internet the station has gone from strength to strength since its launch 5 years ago.

Hannahwood Radio was launched in June 2015 and the show has already had over 5,600 listeners and has proved hugely popular.

The idea behind the station was to create accessible, friendly and no-fuss radio for people with and without disabilities all around the world. Nearly 50 presenters share 30 different shows throughout the week and they have now achieved over 175,000 show listens. They have nearly 1500 followers with a facebook group of over 250 members and a twitter following of over 600. The AAA studio is a no pressure environment where everyone gets involved as much or as little as they want to and it provides opportunities in broadcasting and DJing regardless of ability and experience. ALL are welcome to come and create their own radio show. Hear our shows and find out more at our website: www.accessallaerials.com

Run by Hannahwood young adults, 11 presenters take it in turns to go to the Access All Aerials studio at SealeHayne every Thursday to present their shows. As well as sharing their latest news, the show empowers the young people to choose their own themes, music and topics. The themes so far have included Sensational Soundtracks, Food Anthems, Bondathon, Radio 1 Big Weekend, Country Ho’down, Boyband Whoppers, 80s Wonders, Australian Bangers, Disney Love, Hello Songs and Naughty 00s. Hannahwood Radio was set up with the idea that the young adults of Hannahwood would be able to share their news with their listeners, mainly family members. The show has really helped the young people to become more confident in using their voices and to improve their skills on their communication aids. 9

Enterprises at Hannahs Chuckleberry Jam Hannahs guests and the horticulture team at Seale-Hayne launched their own chuckleberry jam business in 2015 which proved a huge success. The guests were involved in each stage of the process. They grew the chuckleberries in the potager garden, picked them, made the jam, put it into jars and labelled them. Last year they sold 356 jars with the sales totalling £1,200. Over 20 guests were involved in the project from start to finish. This summer the enterprise has continued and the latest batch of jam is now on sale.

Hannahwood Sweets and Treats The Hannahwood young adults recently launched their own Sweets and Treats coffee shop at Hannahs Ivybridge. Every Wednesday morning and afternoon the young adults take it in turns to serve the customers. They sell hot drinks and home-made cakes and made nearly £100 in the first two weeks. They have a ‘Barista of the Month’ scheme that will give an extra special treat to someone who has worked particularly hard in their session and received good feedback from the customers. At the end of each quarter the team will decide whether they will spend the profit on purchasing some equipment or treating themselves to a nice meal out. 10

Volunteer Awards

We all know that the wonderful volunteers at Hannahs have an enormous impact on what we are able to achieve and the range of services and support we are able to provide for people with disabilities. They give their time and energy without question or wanting anything in return, so we were delighted to have an opportunity to thank them and show our appreciation at our annual Volunteer Awards evening. The award winners were voted for by the general public, staff, fellow volunteers and corporate supporters – congratulations to all the winners and thank you again to our wonderful volunteers.

Interested in volunteering? Contact Simon Raphael to arrange an informal appointment at simon.raphael@discoverhannahs.org or telephone 01626 325 850. We’d love to have you as part of the team!

Volunteering Our wonderful volunteers have an enormous impact on what we are able to achieve and the range of services and support we are able to provide to those who need it. We are always looking for new volunteers and have lots of fun, worthwhile and involving roles and opportunities. Charity Shops

There are eight Hannahs charity shops in Plymouth, Ivybridge, Saltash and Newton Abbot and we would not be able to run them without the help of our teams of dedicated volunteers.

Events

Some volunteers work at events manning the Hannahs stand and acting as ambassadors for Hannahs while others choose to help out at the annual Hannahs Christmas Fayre. 12

Seale-Hayne

There are so many opportunities to volunteer at Seale-Hayne. One of the busiest areas is the gallery. This summer the volunteers had their work cut out as we welcomed 15,000 visitors to the Harry Potter exhibition. There were several events around the exhibition at which volunteers were also needed.

Festivals

Guests from Hannahs at Seale-Hayne volunteer every summer at the Exeter Respect Festival, which is the city’s annual celebration of diversity, where they use the performing and creative arts to engage the wider community in saying no to racism and all forms of prejudice.

Working with guests

Volunteer Martin Costin (right) recently heard that Hannahs guest Jamie Farr (left) really wanted to go and help out at the South Devon Railway but that there was no one available to take him. Martin now gives up his Fridays to take Jamie who absolutely loves the experience. 13

Hannah Lavell

Hannah Lavell is 25 years old and for the last six years she has been living in a nursing home. In February 2016 her life was transformed when she moved into a bungalow of young adults at Hannahs Ivybridge where she now lives 52 weeks a year. It is only by chance that she learnt about Hannahs when her mother spotted a Hannahs minibus while out shopping and decided to follow it up. She has made so many new friends at Hannahs and she loves taking part in as many activities as possible at both Ivybridge and Seale-Hayne.

14

is the only sport that allows electric wheelchairs. Hannah has many strings to her bow as she is a qualified teaching assistant which she hopes to dip into again at some stage and she also studied art at college.

Hannah is a regular presenter on Hannahwood Radio and she has been on some brilliant outings over the summer including trips to Burrator Reservoir and Torquay United and sailing round Plymouth Harbour.

This summer Hannah was asked to join the steering group for the Funky Llama Festival, a totally inclusive festival held in Plymouth every summer. She has now been elected official Funky Llama volunteer for 2017 which is a great honour.

Hannah is very keen on all sports particularly football. She joined the Ocean City Powerchair Football Club three years ago and plays regularly in matches as well as training at least twice a month. Powerchair Football

Hannah is a great ambassador for Hannahs as being given these opportunities means she is not only able to represent her peers from Hannahwood but also her community and beyond.

Harry Crome

Harry Crome works as a bistro assistant at Hannahs at SealeHayne. Harry is 19 years old and has Asperger’s syndrome. In February this year he was starting to think about what he wanted to do once he finished college in the summer and was really pleased to be offered a part-time job in Hannahs Bistro. Harry, who lives in Broadclyst near Exeter, started working in the Bistro while he was still at Exeter College studying Skills for Living. When he left college in June he changed his work schedule from two long days to three short days a week which suits him better. He then recently joined the Inspired Art group at Seale-Hayne on Mondays. He has always been good with numbers and dates and is now enjoying being creative by painting pictures.

Before joining Hannahs Harry gained valuable work experience in other cafes and particularly enjoyed helping with the trolley service in college going round the building selling to students and staff. “I used to hate meeting new people but since joining Hannahs I have become much better at it and enjoy it. I have made some friends and feel confident doing my job”.

Andrew and Dan Bradbury I’m Andrew and my youngest brother Dan, who was 24 in June, has attended Hannahs in one way or another since he was 8 years old. Alongside my brothers, Jonnie and Cal, I ran the Birmingham Half Marathon in October 2014, raising money for the Dame Hannah Rogers Charity and in March 2016 I decided that I needed another challenge and set my sights on the Ride24 Newcastle to London event (Newcastle to London by bike in under 24 hours!). Leaving London on the train at 7am on an August Saturday morning, I set off from Newcastle at midday on my bike with the destination of London (again), 510km away! Following 22 hours and 15 minutes of rain, hail, darkness, 20+mph headwinds and eating as much as I could, I eventually arrived at Spitalfields Market, London, on Sunday morning. Through the generosity of friends, colleagues, family and my employer I raised an incredible £2,790 for the Dame Hannah Rogers Charity. Dan has a severe form of cerebral palsy and cannot walk, talk or feed himself but his mental faculties remain intact. He follows conversations, has a wicked and defined sense of humour and his smile is enough to light up any dark day - but he relies on the skilled and selfless care of others to allow him 18

to engage with the world around him in a way that is meaningful, enjoyable and real. Dan has always had a proactive, supportive and loving family, with our mantra being to treat him as much as possible as we would if he were fully able-bodied. He is the butt of jokes, a source of humour as well as comfort - a fully participating member of the family. Whilst we have confidence, as a family, that we bring stability, love and support to Dan’s life, we also recognise that without the unparalleled help of the Dame Hannah Rogers Charity there is no way that we could possibly offer Dan the standard of life and level of happiness that he has had and continues to have. For this reason, whenever any of us are raising money, the Dame Hannah Rogers Charity is always at the front of our thoughts.”

Joe and Joseph Barnes

Joe Barnes is the father of Joseph, a student at Hannahs school in Ivybridge. Joe has decided that he would like to support Hannahs by doing some fundraising for new equipment for the school. A new plasma screen TV is very much needed for the students’ learning and development. Joe has lots of ideas and plans to raise the money and has got off to an incredible start, raising £220 in the first three days since setting up his Just Giving page and is now up to £990. A new plasma screen costs £3,000 so he still has a bit of a way to go but he is doing an incredible job of raising money. “If it was not for Hannahs I haven’t got any idea how we would have coped as a family. The support and help we get is out of this world. The staff help Joseph and have brought him on so much. We never expected Joseph to be able to do what he can.” To support Joe’s fundraising team, you can visit his Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Joe-Barnes5 . Joe will be organising lots of fundraising events and challenges in the next few months so keep looking at his page to find out more. 19
