As the Dallas Sports Commission (DSC) marks its 10th anniversary, the North Texas region takes a moment to reflect on a decade of transformation. Over the past ten years, the DSC has not only positioned Dallas as a premier destination for sports but has also fueled the region’s economy, tourism, and community development. From hosting major sporting events to launching initiatives that engage and uplift the local community, the
Commission’s impact has been felt far and wide. On Tuesday, November 12, the DSC commemorated this significant milestone with a vibrant reception at the Echo Lounge and Music Hall. The event, aptly named “A Decade Well Played,” brought together sports leaders, local officials, and partners to celebrate the Commission’s many achievements and look forward to even more exciting opportunities ahead.
“We’re known for our Friday Night Lights, but our passion for sports in Texas goes far beyond the gridiron,” said Monica Paul, Executive Director of the Dallas Sports Commission. “Whether it’s hosting the NCAA Women’s Final Four, welcoming the FIFA World Cup 26™, or drawing world-class athletes to events like the United Pickleball Championships, Dallas has proven itself as a hub for major sporting victories. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past decade, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
The evening was filled with energy and excitement, with interactive décor and special video messages from local media giants Ben Swanger, Bill Jones, Clayton Neville, Grant
Moise, Joe Trahan, Mike Doocy, and Newy Scruggs. The display also featured messages from DSC partners and clients, highlighting both the Commission’s past accomplishments and its vision for the future.
One of the evening’s most memorable moments came when Francisco de la Torre, representing the Mexican General Consulate, honored Monica Paul for her leadership and the DSC’s continued work in bringing events that benefit the Dallas community.
The event’s highlight was the premiere of the DSC’s documentary short, a powerful 10-minute film that reflects on the past, present, and future of the organization. The documentary, which took over a year and a half to produce, combines heartfelt interviews with b-roll footage, showcasing the collaborative spirit that drives the Dallas sports community.
“A Decade Well Played” was not only a celebration of past achievements but a glimpse into the promising future ahead for the Dallas Sports Commission and the North Texas region. With continued leadership, Dallas is poised to remain at the forefront of the global sports scene for many years to come.
The DSC’s contributions to the region’s economy are nothing short of extraordinary. Over the last decade, the Commission has generated a staggering $5.4 billion in economic impact for North Texas. This includes 614 events that attracted 9.5 million attendees. These events have supported local businesses, boosted tourism, and created thousands of jobs
across various sectors. But the DSC’s influence goes beyond economics. The organization is deeply committed to using sports as a force for good in the community. Through initiatives like the Mayor’s Youth Sports Ticket Program, which has provided over 16,000 free tickets to local youth, and literacy programs that have helped generate more than 14.7 million minutes of reading time, the DSC has harnessed the power of sports to make a positive social impact.
“Sports have the power to unite us and inspire meaningful change,” Monica Paul remarked. “We’re proud to contribute not just to the economy, but to the well-being of our community as well.”
Looking to the future, the DSC is poised to continue its remarkable trajectory. This past summer marked a milestone with the groundbreaking of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas, a state-of-the-art venue that will significantly enhance the region’s
ability to host major events. The new facility will serve as a key driver in attracting even more top-tier conventions and sports events to the area.
The excitement continues to build as Dallas prepares to host nine matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an event that will place the city on the global stage once again.
As the Dallas Sports Commission enters its next decade, the future of sports in North Texas has never looked brighter. Here’s to A Decade Well Played—and to the next ten!

In its debut season with 16 teams, the Big 12 Conference has blossomed with the shift in college football. The 2024 championship race has delivered everything fans could hope for: electrifying on-field drama, upsets, and a reimagined championship experience that’s setting a new standard for the sport. Heading into the final week, a four-way tie atop the standings has left fans in suspense, with no clear answers about which teams will ultimately make their way to Arlington. Amid this chaos, one thing is certain: the Big 12’s blend of star power, tradition, and innovation has elevated this year’s Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship to new heights.
The Big 12’s unpredictability continues to showcase what makes college football so special. The race for the conference championship could be decided by a labyrinth of tiebreaker scenarios. Nine teams still harbor hopes of securing a spot
in the title game, with over 250 possible outcomes, according to the Big 12 office. Currently, Arizona State, Iowa State, BYU, and Colorado sit atop the Big 12 standings and unless chaos unfolds, two of those teams are likely headed to Arlington. That being said, Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech, TCU, and West Virginia remain in the mix, holding slim, but not impossible chances of sneaking in.
The intricacies of the tiebreakers have only added to the drama. Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes find themselves in a precarious position. A loss to Kansas this past weekend means they no longer control their destiny. Common opponents weigh heavily in the tiebreaking process, creating scenarios where teams like Arizona State and Iowa State could win in Week 14 but still miss out on a championship berth.
Let’s break it down, if Colorado, Iowa State, and
Arizona State finish tied at 7-2 in Big 12 play, a Texas Tech victory over West Virginia could propel Colorado into the title game, where they’d face either Iowa State or Arizona State depending on common-opponent records. The stakes shift with every outcome:
• A Colorado loss likely results in Arizona State vs. Iowa State.
• An Arizona State loss sets up Iowa State vs. BYU.
• An Iowa State loss means Arizona State would face BYU.
BYU’s fate hangs on a delicate web of results. Wins by Baylor and Texas Tech could send Colorado to Arlington alongside Iowa State. Conversely, if West Virginia prevails over Texas Tech, Arizona State and Iowa State remain the most likely contenders.
The dizzying complexity of this year’s championship race underscores the Big 12’s reputation for parody. With so much on the line, the conference has delivered a season for the ages. And when December 7 arrives, two star-studded teams will step onto the field at AT&T Stadium to battle for the title of Big 12 Champions and a potential spot in the College Football Playoff.
Yet the game itself is only part of the story, the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship isn’t just about crowning a champion—it’s a celebration of everything that makes college football unforgettable. Think early morning tailgates, passionate fanbases, fight song chants, and school traditions. The event embodies the heart and soul of the sport and this year, the conference is adding even more excitement with A-list entertainment.
Three-time Grammy Award-winning artist
NE-YO will headline the championship halftime show, performing alongside the marching bands of both participating schools. The Big 12 is once again blending tradition with innovation, creating a halftime spectacle that honors the conference’s history while embracing its future.
“We are thrilled to welcome NE-YO as the 2024 Football Championship halftime performer,” said Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. “The Big 12 continues to infuse culture and entertainment into our league’s biggest moments, balancing it with the traditions that make college athletics so special. With both school bands joining the performance, the annual halftime show will continue to blend the old with the new.”
NE-YO shared his enthusiasm as well: “I’m honored to be named the halftime performer for this year’s Big 12 Football Championship. The atmosphere is going to be electric, and I can’t wait for everyone to watch how we integrate the marching bands into the performance for an unforgettable show.”
As the final week of the regular season unfolds, the Big 12’s championship race remains wide open. AT&T Stadium awaits, ready to host the culmination of one of college football’s most unpredictable seasons. Secure your spot now and watch the Hollywood script’s conclusion at the 2024 Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship. Tickets are available at www.seatgeek.com.

enduring collaboration reflects the marathon’s commitment to serving the community and Scottish Rite’s dedication to providing exceptional care for children.
“We are incredibly proud to be a part of Scottish Rite, and they equally cherish their involvement with the BMW Dallas Marathon. It’s a truly symbiotic relationship, and to us, it represents the perfect partnership.” said Dr.Logan Sherman, Chairman of the Dallas Marathon. This long standing relationship has now generated over 5 million dollars for the world class institution highlighting the importance of safe and accessible sports for children.
commemorate these historic occasions than by participating in the marathon—now a cherished tradition for both, and this year, it’s setting new records. “We are certainly growing and growing faster than anticipated, last year we sold out of all of our events but that sell out happened between thanksgiving and right before the races but this year, back in October we sold out of most of our marathon events and that speaks volumes.” said Dr.Logan. This partnership is highly beneficial to all, as proceeds from the marathon—through registration fees and sponsorships—directly support Scottish Rite’s initiatives and mission. The BMW Marathon has become more than a race, becoming a Dallas community celebration
that underscores the impact of the partnership with Scottish Rite. It has evolved into a special event for Scottish Rite patients, who transition from receiving treatment to proudly cheering on participants. There have been many successful stories filled with gratitude from patients that express the commitment from the hospital reflecting a symbol of resilience that have transformed their own challenges into moments of inspiration. “We want to help spread the message of Scottish Rite, show people their story to let them see at firsthand the incredible work they do and the warm, welcoming environment they provide—showing that they are farfrom what you traditionally think of as a hospital” said Dr.Sherman.
As the marathon approaches, the excitement continues to build not just for runners but also for patients and staff at Scottish Rite. This event reminds everyone involved that life challenges much like marathons are best tackled, with strength, support and determination. Many patients love to show their appreciation to the BMW Dallas Marathon by participating in smaller marathon events or events by going out there and cheering for the runners as it is a celebration on and off the course. “They love coming out here, we once had one of the kids from Scottish Rite come and sing the national anthem, they also love to help holding the tape for the marathon champions to cross the line.We bring them up on stage to introduce themselves, and it’s a truly special moment to introduce them to the crowd”,said Dr. Sherman. Since 2007, there has also been a patient championship program that enlists Scottish Rite patients to help encourage and cheer runners in the marathon, highlighting the wonderful kids the marathon generously supports each year. The BMW Dallas Marathon plays a huge role not only in raising funds to support the hospitals mission, but it also creates a platform for patients,
families and staff to feel part of something greater and this year it is also including its donors “This year, one of our board members proposed the idea of creating a ‘Legacy Runner’ program to honor those who contribute financially to Scottish Rite. These generous donors will have the opportunity to attend the check presentation, which will take place on Friday before the marathon at Scottish Rite. Their support plays a vital role in making this event and partnership possible” said Dr. Logan.
The impact of the marathon extends beyond the race day itself. Families, volunteers and Scottish Rite carry the energy and inspiration from the event into their daily lives. For patients, seeing thousands of runners push their limits serves as a reminder of their own strengths and perseverance.
The goals and growth do not stop as “the sky’s the limit. We want the community to learn more about Scottish Rite and the incredible impact they have. We also want to share the commitment of promoting health and wellness through this partnership and continue to inspire the community. With the event returning to TV, more people will see just how unique and welcoming it is, and how families feel confident bringing their children there for any type of care.” said Dr. Logan.
The BMW Dallas Marathon and Scottish Rite for Children share a bond that transcends more than sponsorship, its a partnership rooted in resilience, hope, and the determination to overcome challenges. If you’re interested in making a difference and want to donate, visit www.dallasmarathon.com
