DALLAS TRINITY FC: DALLAS GETS IT DONE

By: Ben Harbuck

Dallas Sports Commission • Dallas Sports Commission • Dallas Sport Like the river they were named after, Dallas Trinity FC (DTFC) has been charting their own path throughout the metroplex. As the city’s first professional women’s soccer team, DTFC’s debut season has already captured the hearts of local sports fans and laid a solid foundation for a bright future in the USL Super League. DTFC capped their fall schedule sitting second in the league table, an impressive start to an inaugural campaign that not only highlighted the challenges of entering a competitive league but also showcased the steady progress and resilience of a team finding its identity. Under the guidance of head coach Pauline MacDonald, the squad has found the balance between a sturdy defensive structure and an electrifying, forward-thinking attack.

pitch has been massive for the culture DTFC wants to instill while her skillset brings order and creativity to the midfield—balancing defense with the art of playmaking. During the open transfer window, GM Chris Petrucelli added to this dynamic mix, signing DFW native and USWNT prospect Lexi Missimo. Missimo has already sparked local pride and excitement around Dallas, in her professional debut, after scoring in the first 4 minutes, Lexi was asked about what it means to be playing at home:

Coach MacDonald’s methodical approach has turned DTFC into a well-balanced side, built on a philosophy that values both tactics and raw talent. “We want to bring the best of the American game, the physicality, the speed, the power, but we want to kind of mold that with a more European style in terms of trying to play through the lines.” she explains—a vision that clearly resonates throughout the club. At the heart of DTFC’s impressive start are veteran leaders whose performances earned them USL Super League Team of the Month honors in the fall. Star Forward Allie Thornton has emerged as a true gamechanger, consistently finding space and converting scoring chances. While team captain Amber Brooks plays a pivotal role; her leadership on and off the

Reflecting on the importance of increased visibility for women’s sports and the impact of having a professional team in her hometown, she added: “Oh, it’s very important. One thing I wish I had when I was younger was an opportunity to watch more women’s sports… it truly does develop you as a player.” As March ushers in the latter half of the season, the excitement around Dallas Trinity FC is building. With a 6-4-6 record, the team currently sits in 3rd place on the league table. Coach MacDonald and her staff are focused on improving their position to make a deep run in the USL playoffs. At the same time, the entire organization is committed to becoming an integral part of Dallas’ vibrant sports culture and ensuring the journey is as enjoyable for fans as it is for the team. With a mix of experienced veterans and promising young stars, Trinity FC is geared up to get it done and tackle a challenging spring schedule. Fans can look forward to marquee matchups and promotional nights on the calendar, including International Women’s Day Celebration (3/9), Pups at the Pitch (4/2), Celebrating Our Abilities Night (4/19), Boots’ Rodeo Night (4/26), and Fan Appreciation Night (5/31). At Cotton Bowl Stadium, the in-game atmosphere is crafted to pull fans closer to the action. DTFC offers family-friendly events, gift giveaways, interactive

fan zones, and opportunities for young athletes to connect with their favorite players—ensuring that each game is more than just a soccer match. The rise of Dallas Trinity FC marks a milestone for women’s sports and for the entire city. Establishing a professional women’s team on home soil represents progress, empowerment, and the fulfillment of a dream cherished by aspiring athletes. It’s a testament to the belief that local talent thrives when given the right platform, inspiring young players to chase their ambitions. As spring unfolds, DFW is invited to witness history in the making. IRA MOLAYO:

CHANGING THE GAME, ONE SWING AT A TIME By:

Ben Harbuck

Dallas Sports Commission • Dallas Sports Commission • Dallas Sports

Few people understand the power of sports to create change quite like Ira Molayo. A Dallas native, Molayo has dedicated his career to making golf more accessible, inclusive, and impactful. As the founder of the I AM a Golfer Foundation, General Manager and Director of Golf at Cedar Crest Golf Course, and the Vice President of the Northern Texas PGA Section (NTPGA), his influence extends well beyond the fairways. This month, we celebrate Molayo for his commitment to growing the game and using it to uplift his community. Molayo’s golf journey began at the very place he now oversees. Introduced to the sport by his mother, he spent much of his childhood exploring the course while she teed off with friends. That early exposure planted the seeds of a lifelong passion. After graduating from Carter High School in Dallas, Molayo stepped away from the game to pursue his education at Southern A&M

University in Baton Rouge. When he moved back to Dallas in 1999, he found himself missing the game. That’s when he reconnected with a childhood mentor, PGA Member Leonard Jones—a decision that would change his life’s trajectory. “I was waiting tables and bartending, and I asked if I could be a marshal or a starter at the golf course because I knew if I volunteered there, I could get free golf,” Molayo recalls. “Leonard offered me his assistant position. That’s when I saw a whole different side of golf—the business side.” Inspired by Jones, Molayo merged his love for golf with his growing interest in business. He earned his Class A PGA Membership in 2007, solidifying his place among golf’s elite professionals. Since 2008, Molayo’s company, IAMJ Enterprises, has managed Cedar Crest Golf

Course, a historic venue that hosted the 1927 PGA Championship. Under his leadership, Cedar Crest has transformed into more than just a golf course—it’s become a vibrant hub for mentorship, youth development, and economic opportunity in South Dallas. Molayo’s dedication to these causes has garnered widespread recognition over the years. His efforts in player development, education, and community service were celebrated in 2017 when he was inducted into the African American Golf Hall of Fame, a testament to his lasting impact on both the game and the industry. One of Molayo’s most significant contributions is the I AM a Golfer Foundation, which he launched in 2018 after Cedar Crest lost its First Tee Program. Rather than let financial barriers keep kids from experiencing the game, he stepped in to provide lessons, equipment, and opportunities to young players who otherwise wouldn’t have access. The foundation is built on three core pillars: • • •

I AM a Golfer – Providing junior golfers with coaching and playing opportunities. I AM an Intern – Offering paid internships in golf operations, marketing, and community development. I AM a Scholar – Awarding scholarships to support students pursuing higher education.

Since its inception, the foundation has supported over 1,000 juniors, provided 123 paid internships, and awarded $300,000 in scholarships. Additionally, more than $1 million has been reinvested into Cedar Crest Golf Course, ensuring its continued success for future generations.

Molayo’s influence extends beyond Cedar Crest. As the first Black PGA of America Golf Professional to serve as an officer for the NTPGA, he’s working to diversify the sport and create opportunities for underrepresented communities. His efforts continue to prove that golf is not just a game—it’s a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. A strong believer in positive affirmations, Molayo named his foundation “I AM a Golfer” to instill confidence in young players. “Everyone needs to understand that you can be whatever your mind’s eye sees you to be,” he says. “When I was growing up, I had to self-affirm and tell myself, ‘I am a golfer.’ I have to believe that I am what I see myself to be. That mantra has gotten me through life.” While Molayo has already achieved so much, his work is far from finished. As he prepares to take on the role of President of the NTPGA in 2026, his mission remains clear: grow the game, break down barriers, and ensure that golf is a sport for everyone. Through his leadership at Cedar Crest, his role in the NTPGA, and his ongoing work with the I AM a Golfer Foundation, he continues to demonstrate how passion and purpose can change lives. Dallas is fortunate to have a leader like Ira Molayo. His impact on the game—and on the lives of countless young people—will be felt for years to come.
