Exercise 01: Identitfying the Basics

Using InDesign, we were to create a 3.5” wide x 2.5” identity card. It needed to include: the course title, name, email adress and website, a short quote and the UNL “N” logo. Our identity cards were to be black and white only with no grayscale or halftones.The purpose of this exercise was to be introduced to Typography and inform the instructor on my current level of typographic skills, sensibilities and software skills.

Exercise 02: Type Hierarchy / Type as a Sign

In exercise 02, we were to create design iterations that reconstructed given texts and created a visual with the text. There were three steps within the exercise that each required three diferent compositions. Each step allowed us to explore different typefaces, variations, point sizes, colors, and axis’.


Step 1: In step 1, compositions could be formatted using the following options: • One Typeface • One Variation • One Point Size • One Color Each composition added another axis that needed to be utilized.

On the surface,at least, it would seem that designers were moving away from authorless, scientific texts – in which inviolable visual principles arrived at through extensive visual research were revealed – towards a position in which the designer could claim some level of ownership over the message (and this at a time when literary theory was moving away from that very position). But some of the institutional features of design practice are at odds with zealous attempts at self-expression.




Step 2: In step 2, compositions could be formatted using the following options: • One Typeface • Any Variation of Weight • One Point Size • Two Colors Each composition added another axis that needed to be utilized.




Step 3: In step 3, compositions could be formatted using the following options: • Two Typefaces • Any Variation of Weight • Any Point Sizes • Two Colors Each composition added another axis that needed to be utilized.




Exercise 03: Type as Shape

For this exercise we were to select 2 letters that we found interesting as a form. Using the most interesting parts of the letterform we were to create 3 new ligatures. The purpose of this exercise was to: learn basic anatomy of letterforms, reaserch type as a shape, explore different type families, to discover solutions which two characters are combined to form a new symbol or monogram and learn to use the pen tool to create vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator. We were to try not to draw or make recognizable shapes and to think about contrast and balance. When finished, we picked the new form we thought was most successful. Then, create 4 scaled versions of the graphic: 10%, 50%, 100%, and 150% of the original size.

Exercise 04: Expression with Type

Exercise 04 had two different parts. For part 1 we were to explore the expressive qualities of different type families. Using only type, we had to typeset a list of words to reflect their meaning. The words were: angry, technical, industrial, educational, fast, authority, classic, sorrow, playful, and elegant. In part 2, we were to typeset three quotes and properly highlight or call out the key message or messages. Using at least two different typefaces per quote, we were to show the expression and hierarchy within the quote. All while considering case, line breaks, leading, and contrast in scale, style and weight.

Project 01: Type as Identity

Project 01 was a culmination of exercises one through four. We were to create our own stationary including: logotype, business card, letterhead and envelope design. Learning outcomes of this project were: applying basic type principles, understanding positive and negitive space, balance and readibility of the logotype, ability to print, cut and document designs professionally, and mastery of basic design software skills.

Project 02: Type in History

For project 02, we worked in small groups. Each group was to research a period of time in typographic history and create a 24-32 page printed and digital booklet based on their research. The booklets highlighted significate parts within each groups time period. Learning outcomes of this project were: developing group dynamics/ leadership, becoming familiar with history of type, learn to position text within a grid system, designin a book that is attractive and easy to navigate while considering readability and legibility.

Project 03: Type as Language

Project 03 was to create 6, 24” x 36” or 11” 17”, movie posters. We were to used up to 3 typefaces per poster and designs were to be primarily typographic. The posters needed to include: movie title, promotional copy, release date, main cast, director and producer credits. Learning outcomes of this project were: combining form with message, establish basic type hierarchy, understanding the different between display and body fonts, ability to print and cut documents, and mastery of basic design software skills.

Project 04: Type as Hierachy / Visual Hierarchy in Type

Project 04 was to create a series of cereal box designs that use typography as a visual element. We were to make a grid based composition for each panel. The first composition was to use one typeface, one type family, with black text on a white background. Then the second composition could have any typeface for the cereal name, but still working with the type used in the first composition. We were allowed to include basic black shapes with black text with a white background or switched. The third composition was allowed to incorporate color.
