Miami

NIGHTS The Daily, Alan Faena, and Philippe Hoerle-Guggenheim hosted a dinner at the Faena Hotel to celebrate “Act 1,” the third edition of The Daily’s collaboration with Sebastian Faena. PHOTOGRAPHY BY daniel zuliani The limited-edition “Act 1” issue starring Stella Maxwell and Jordan Barrett was released in conjunction with Art Basel Miami. The evening kicked off with poolside cocktails before a family-style dinner featuring heavenly Argentinian cuisine. Guests such as Paris Hilton, Devon Windsor, Barbara Sturm, Valentina Ferrer, Caroline Daur, Pietro Boselli, Jason Morgan, Giampaolo Sgura, Miguel Arnau, Shaun Ross, Federico Pignatelli, Susan Shin, Courtney Daniels, Frederico Azevedo, Alex Cohen, and The Daily’s Brandusa Niro were on hand to toast The Daily’s and Faena’s latest project. Before dinner, we caught up with recently engaged Devon Windsor, who was in town checking out a few events and spending time with her fiancé, Johnny Dex, who lives in Miami. “It’s crazy how many fashion events are here now,” Windsor said. “It’s almost like Fashion Week!” Where does her interest in art fall? “I like art! But I need to expand my art collection. It’s pretty weak. I love to paint, but not because I’m really good at it. I do it for fun. I love paint bars where you have wine and you paint.” Windsor also paid homage to her friends, “Act 1” models Stella Maxwell and Jordan Barrett. “I just did the Victoria’s Secret show with Stella,” she said. “I love Stella and Jordan. They’re the epitome of cool, badass people!” One of the highlights of the evening was the sculptures brought in just for the event by Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli, presented by HG Contemporary Gallery. “Tsereteli’s large-scale sculptures are well known and have become monumental in cities around the world,” said Philippe Hoerle-Guggenheim. “He is also president of the Russian Academy of Arts. We are going to show his sculptures smaller in size but just as impressive around the theme of Garden of Eden animals.” A few pieces from artist Louis Carreon’s Ballerina series were also on display. “The Ballerina collection was inspired by growing up in Los Angeles,” Carreon explained. “The ballerinas represent thespians, actors, poets, models, dancers—whoever moves to California, to Hollywood, stimulated to come and be a celebrity by reaching their goals. The ballerina represents them and the lust and addiction that beats them up along the way. If you notice, my ballerinas look strong at first, but if you look closely their dresses are moved and tattered. They’re in weird positions that aren’t really formal when it comes to that type of dance. They have bottles of booze on the floor, snakes next to them.” After dinner, the fun carried on with a poolside dance party, which saw the likes of Chloë Sevigny, Timo Weiland, Isaac Likes, Jenny Albright, Stephanie “Chefanie” Nass, Andrew Warren, Sarah Shatz, the Kaplan twins, we could go on and on…quelle soirée!

What Is your background?

Shaun Ross

Pietro Boselli and Jason Morgan

I was born in France and raised in Germany. I grew up traveling to many parts of the world, mostly because my parents and family were spread out. My mother was with the embassy of Senegal for many years, and my father did landscape architecture all over southern Europe. I grew up in Bonn, which was the German capital, and I had great exposure to culture and diversity. Later, I went to a business college in Cambridge and then moved to New York about 15 years ago. You have a background in finance. How did it prepare you for the art world?

I did financial controlling as a senior analyst for about 30 hotels at Hyatt, and it was a good experience that helped me understand numbers and the importance of synergies—synergies among various people, roles, and departments. I believe synergies are relevant in the art world as well. The actual art work is a beautiful story that reflects the artist’s input on his or her upbringing, the cultural environment, and the collector that experiences it. Running a gallery requires a financial understanding that helps create a platform where artists can blossom. Are you related to Solomon Guggenheim?

Distantly. The Guggenheim family is originally Swiss, and in the mid-1800s, they immigrated to America and France. I’m from the French side, whereas Solomon made a significant name for himself and his family in America many years ago. What’s unique about your gallery?

Kyla Shay, Louis Carreon, Philippe Hoerle-Guggenheim, Andrea Catsimatidis, and Betsy Jones

We have done shows other galleries may have not taken on, as they may have been perceived as not commercially viable enough. However, we are in it for the long term. We strive to create advantageous positions for artists, patrons, and collectors alike. Creating value is always our goal. What’s on your agenda for 2019?

We have plans to expand to another city—Los Angeles, here we come!—and show more amazing exhibitions that cement our position in the art world. The best is coming! Federico Pignatelli, Helena Gomes, Frederico Azevedo, and Alex Cohen FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

“Sam Edelman is one of my go-to brands for everything. From red carpet to street style, they have me covered,” Joseph Cassell told us about his relationship with the celebrity-favorite brand. “I like being able to incorporate brands with styles that are attainable.… I work with a lot of musicians, and I like giving something to the fan base that they feel they can be a part of. Their craftsmanship is spot-on. So good!” The Eveleigh’s enchanting garden patio overlooking the Hollywood Hills was the perfect environment to bring the collection to life. The night began with signature botanicalinspired cocktails and a preview of Sam Edelman’s S/S ’19 footwear, handbags, dresses, denim, and outerwear. Guests included Jessica Paster, Maeve Reilly, Monty Jackson, Jennifer Rade, Chris Horan, Sophie Lopez, Warren Alfie Baker, Dani Michelle, and Starworks’ Noelle Keshishian and Lisa Walker. When asked about some of his favorite styles from the new collection, Cassell highlighted the Elita woven bootie, the Dierdra slingback pump, and the Winona and Rowena Western boots. “Some brands do a cowboy boot that doesn’t feel right to me,” he said, “but having lived in Nashville for 25 years, I know when it’s real, and it’s real here. I can feel it.” Later in the evening, attendees gathered for an intimate dinner. Beautiful one-of-a-kind ceramic plates featuring Sam Edelman’s newly unveiled heritage logo and branded denim embroidered napkins paying homage to the brand’s recently launched denim collection set the table and the scene for a truly immersive brand experience. Venice-based fashionable florist Flowerboy Project filled the room with lush florals in rich jewel tones. Twinkling candlelight created a magical atmosphere. Guests departed with their own floral arrangements created at the bespoke bouquet bar.

Q&A With IVAN BART

What are you looking forward to this Fashion Week? Hands down, what I’m most looking forward to is our collaboration with Harlem’s Fashion Row to celebrate Ruth E. Carter’s legacy in film, as reimagined by the talented stylist Ibrahim Kamara. Ruth Carter is destined to win an Academy Award for her work on Black Panther, and we’re honored that she will include a stop at NYFW: The Shows on her way to Hollywood! I am also looking forward to seeing the future of American fashion— Brandon Maxwell, Christian Cowan, LaQuan Smith, Matthew Adams Dolan, Staud, Telfar, and many more—as well as the opportunity to see beautiful fashion in curve sizes with the debut of an 11 Honoré fashion show. What are the panels at NYFW: The Talks going to be on? We’re hosting a number of new Talks this season, with topics ranging from the rise of sustainable African luxury to misrepresentation in media, to diversity in campaign casting and more. We have amazing talents, like Abrima Erwiah and Rosario Dawson from Studio 189, journalist and activist Noor Tagouri, and our very own IMG models, Candice Huffine and Precious Lee, rounding out those of-the-moment conversations. Meanwhile, E!, TRESemmé, Visa, and REPREVE are presenting Talks and special events throughout the week focused on female entrepreneurship and disruption, overcoming adversity, and achieving sustainability in fashion.

Q&A With THE DAILY’s

MARK TEVIS

In addition to your role as a senior advisor to our CEO at The Daily, what’s keeping you busy these days? I’ve taken two lifelong passions of mine, real estate and tennis, and built a new career around them both. I really began to pay attention to architecture in my early twenties, when I was traveling internationally as a classical singer. Opera houses are usually pretty spectacular, and so were the homes where we were entertained. I kind of fell in love with it all. Luxury real estate has a similar appeal, so I decided to make it part of my everyday. And I was lucky enough to join one of the best teams in New York—the Noble Black Team at Douglas Elliman. I’m also an avid tennis player and lifelong fan of the game. That has lead me to work with the Women’s Tennis Association in a business development role, creating partnerships with fashion, luxury goods, and beauty brands. What do fashion and real estate have in common? Several things. On its face, luxury real estate in New York City, like fashion, is a sexy business—beautiful homes, interesting clients, incredibly fastpaced. What’s not to like about that? But more importantly, what drew me is the advisory role a good agent can play over a lifetime, particularly in a city like New York. The idea of a “forever” home sounds great on HGTV, but it’s not the reality for most New York clients. They may start with a primary home, followed by an investment property, then a second weekend home. So they regularly need someone competent and connected, and when it’s someone they’ve already worked with and trust, that’s the best situation. Getting invited into someone’s home is such an intimate invitation—a true window into their world. And both buyers and sellers need to disclose quite a bit about themselves when making a real estate deal. I love being in a business where I can develop long-term, meaningful relationships, even friendships, with clients. How can we contact you? Mark@dailyfrontrow.com and Mark.Tevis@elliman.com!

GOSSIP REPORT

We wouldn’t want you to grace the front row without being up to speed on the latest rumors. Who’s moving? Who’s shaking? Who’s shilling? Behold, the most intriguing topics…

HOW’S KARL FARING?

It was the absence heard round the world: 85-yearold Karl Lagerfeld sat out Chanel’s couture and menswear shows in January. According to Chanel, he was “tired,” while the Karl Lagerfeld brand described his ailment as a “bad cold.” But we haven’t heard an update about Lagerfeld since—except that he recently anointed Carine Roitfeld as an official collaborator at his eponymous brand. And the world is wondering, given that A) Lagerfeld is the most important designer of his time, and B) Chanel is a very big business. Sending the Kaiser our very best wishes for a speedy recovery!

“Thanks for your concern.”

Where in the world is Terry Richardson?

Short answer: Probably Woodstock, where his wife, Alexandra “Skinny” Bolotow, has opened an eco-friendly store that, according to its website, is “helping you to live a most sustainable life.” We haven’t heard from Terry since his last Insta post on May 13, 2018—a few months earlier, last January, The New York Post reported that the NYPD was investigating sexual-assault allegations against the photographer. Meanwhile, his longtime agency, Art Partner, doesn’t feature Richardson on the list of photographers it represents, although Art Partner Licensing is still hawking his previous work.

In brief: Condé Nast is still sans CEO, and the mag is still on the block with Greenhill & Co. handling the sales process. Rumors that editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi wanted to buy it are fizzling out. According to reports, W has operating budget, and all seems relatively stable—at least today. But in December, a slew of W editors—such as Sam Walker, Gabriella de Givenchy, and Sarah Leon—exited the title, and fashion director Rickie De Sole also added a head-of-fashion-partnerships title at Vogue to her responsibilities. How’s Mario Testino’s redemption tour Coming along?

WHO WILL REPLACE RAF? The chief creative officer gig at Calvin Klein has been empty since Raf Simons was fired in December ’18. Who will wear the crown next at the house of minimalism? A few ideas… Tom Ford Ford is certainly fluent in the kind of ’90s sex appeal that made Calvin Klein great, but he’s already busy enough growing his own namesake brand. Also, if he took on Calvin Klein, he’d never have time to direct another film, which would be a real tragedy.

Simon Spurr Although Spurr has never designed a women’s line, his menswear has always been impeccable and would probably look wonderfully sleek and sophisticated rendered in more feminine proportions. Spurr isn’t big on being told what to do, though, so working for such a big corporation would probably be tough for him.

pat r i c k m c m u l l a n . c o m ( 8 ) ; g e t t y i m a g e s ( 6 ) ; s h u t t e r s t o c k ( 5 ) ; f i r s t v i e w ( 3 ) ; a l l o t h e r s c o u r t e sy

Phoebe Philo Not gonna happen. Not in a million years. Why fire one high-brow European celebrity designer only to hire another? Also, Philo would never design a line for Macy’s and even if she did, let’s be honest, it would probably be a disaster. Middle America is just not her lewk. Besides, if Philo is going anywhere, it’s Chanel. If you think Karl Lagerfeld taking a few post-show bows with Virginie Viard means she’s next in line for the throne, you’re insane.

Jonathan Saunders The man is mad talented. That’s the truth. And he probably could have done something really cool with

DVF with a little more time and under different circumstances.

According to a December report in South China Morning Post, Mario Testino and team have been reaching out to wealthy millennials in Asia, asking them if they’d be interested in a portrait session. (Does he do prints in wallet size?) The iconic photographer was famously ostracized after The New York Times reported accusations of sexual harassment from 13 male models. Daily sources whisper that Testino has been working on personal projects in his native Peru as well.

Kevin Carrigan As global creative director of ck Calvin Klein, Calvin Klein Jeans, and Calvin Klein, Carrigan was responsible for the divisions of the business that actually made money pre–Raf Simons. He decamped for Ralph Lauren shortly after Simons arrived at the company, but he resigned in early January. Make the call!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Can you imagine? They’ve certainly got the design chops and their obsession with silhouette and draping would serve the house codes well. They’ve even got experience building a fashion business around disparate brands and price points—from The Row to Elizabeth and James to Olsenboye. The question is, why would they want to? For the prestige of working for a heritage brand? Please! They’re billionaires calling their own shots and selling $40,000 handbags. They’re probably perfectly happy where they are.

Alexander Wang If you think about it, Wang is sort of the millennial Calvin Klein already: He came to prominence via the runway but made his real money selling T-shirts, and he has an almost religious devotion to a restrictive, black-forward color palette, no matter the season. Sure, his time at

Balenciaga was sort of a bust, but that could work to his advantage at a place like Calvin Klein, where Raf Simon’s Euro-centric POV proved so disastrous to sales.

Brandon Maxwell Of all the designers showing in New York right now, Maxwell might be PVH’s best bet to follow Simons and actually make a go of it. There is a sleek simplicity and ease to his clothes that would work well at Calvin Klein across their various price points. Also, the man knows how to do sexy, which is as important to Calvin Klein’s DNA as minimalism, and something that Simons seemed to completely overlook during his brief time at the brand.

Christopher Bailey What’s he up to these days? He could be cute.

LaQuan Smith Smith would be a wild card, but that’s not a bad thing. He brings the sex appeal, and celebs love him. His strength is occasion-wear, not daytime separates, but maybe he’s secretly dying to create 50 variations of the perfect camel coat and black pencil skirt for Calvin Klein’s department store collections. Probably not, but maybe!

A Random Studio Peon This is the cheapest option, especially if PVH does cut runway entirely. But who’s to say there isn’t a gem of a designer, à la Nicolas Ghesquière or Alessandro Michele, slaving away quietly at Clavin Klein right now, eager to take the reins. Just because Raf’s vision didn’t pan out doesn’t mean someone else, established or not, can’t make the house great, relevant, and thoroughly bankable once again.

Is Vogue seriously charging for runway coverage? For a mere $20K—and editor, i.e. Anna, approval— your McRandom jeans line can get top billing on Vogue Runway next to Gucci, Dior, and Chanel! Apparently, this “opportunity” has existed for a few seasons, but was recently unearthed by BoF. Hoping that $$$ buys you a review? Dommage. That fee only includes a slideshow. Welcome to NYFW! Any plans? I love going to shows where I can support my friends like [Carly] Cushnie. I always enjoy Jonathan Simkhai, too. It’s nice being able to see my friends and all their hard work really pay off. Your capsule collection with Express recently launched. How did that come about? I had worked with Express a few times before, and we had a really organic connection. I’ve always enjoyed creating things that empower the consumer. With Express, the price point is so accessible, and everything that I designed is basically a closet staple that can be worn a million different ways to a bunch of different types of occasions. I wanted something that would make people feel good—I came up with the “GRL PWR” logo that’s on a lot of the looks. I also have the phrase “Stronger than you think” on a T-shirt. How did it feel to see the final products? That’s always such a fun experience. I’ve done a few collaborations like this in the past. Seeing your vision come to life is such an interesting process. You have a lot of cool content on oliviaculpo.com. There’s definitely going to be things there that you won’t necessarily see on my Instagram. I also have a YouTube channel that shows a different side of me. I would say the website is more lifestyle-based, and the YouTube channel is more blog-style. When I was doing research on you, the No. 1 question about you on Google is…do you know what it is? I don’t! It’s “How does Olivia Culpo stay in shape?” Do you get sick of that question? Not at all, because I completely relate to the struggle. I think that everyone wants to find the perfect balance and figure out what works for them. I know that I’ve definitely gone through a process of finding what works for me. I really enjoy working out and exercising. It’s a way that I really unwind and destress. So I work out a lot. I really enjoy running. And I love food. I actually own a restaurant with my family in Rhode Island, and I’ve always been really interesting in cooking. It’s definitely a big part of my family because we’re all cooks. Enjoying a great meal brings people together. I also feel like with food, the more you put into it, the better it is…kind of like the more love you give to it, the better you can cook. I enjoy cooking, and I enjoy eating! I don’t deprive myself of anything, but I don’t overdo anything. I’m really good at [enjoying] things in moderation. What’s your specialty in the kitchen? Probably pizza, which is really easy, but you can make it a ton of different ways. I grew up making pizza all the time with my family. We understand that you and Dove Cameron were neighbors in L. A. What was it like working with her? It was so nice. I hung out with her a lot of times, so we’ve definitely spent time together in the past and she’s just a really sweet, humble, normal girl that I was so happy to work with. When I found out that we were shooting this together, I could not have thought of a better person to be shooting with. What’s next for you? Attending all the Fashion Weeks. I’m going to New York, Paris, and maybe Milan!

a moment with…

Dove Cameron You just came off an off-Broadway run as Cher in the Clueless musical. Tell us more! Cher is such a delightfully, deceptively complex character, and she’s such a beautiful soul. [Playing her] felt like taking history and bringing it back to life again. To be able to meddle in that world was really such a unique experience. We hear that Alicia Silverstone, who originated the role in the film, came to see the show. Were you aware that she was in the audience? Somebody told me, because they didn’t want me to leave the theater right after the show. I thought I was going to be chill, but then I saw her out in the audience. She didn’t look a day older than she was when she starred in the

film. She was smiling with her son and a friend, and I just lost it! I got super emotional, which surprised me. And then, you met her backstage… I was nervous. She was so kind—she loved the show, and she said she loved my performance. She also said she and her son have been fans of my Disney work, which was mind-numbing. How fashion-y are you? I would like to say I am very fashion-y! [Laughs] My parents were jewelry designers in India, so I grew up around showrooms and marble cutleries. I’ve always been interested in fashion, but I’m very simple. I wear minimal jeans with a white T-shirt. Any favorite designers? My all-time favorite is Valentino, because it’s so classic, romantic, and girly. I shop a lot at Politix in Los Angeles—I love really strange, unique pieces. You have 23 million followers on Instagram! I feel so genuinely detached from the whole [concept] of followers. I know that we’re all used to it at this point, but our society today is strange. It’s not necessarily bad

or good, but it’s strange to be one person with so many eyes [on you]. And some people have so many more than me! I don’t know why they follow me, but I love humans— that’s the whole reason I got into this. It’s wonderful to be exposed to and connected to so many humans. What’s the rest of your year like? My film Dumplin’ is out now on Netflix. It has such a great message. I’m headed straight to Los Angeles to work on my music, because I just signed with Sony. I’ve got my first four singles lined up, and now we have to do videos, create an album, and start promoting it, which is so much more work than I would’ve thought. I’m also going to London in the summer to do The Light in the Piazza in the West End with Renée Fleming. It will be my London theatrical debut. I’m playing Clara Johnson, who is like my ultimate ingenue—it’s my favorite role and my favorite show. And then I will be back to promote Descendants 3, the last of my Disney franchise, and we’re going to go on a world tour for that to Tokyo and India and all those places, which will take up a lot of time. It’s going to be a good year! FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M

spade

Creative director Nicola Glass is ushering in a new golden age at Kate Spade. On the eve of her second showing at NYFW, she discusses the brand’s beautiful evolution. BY ASHLEY BAKER

This week, you will show your second collection for Kate Spade at NYFW. How was your initial collection, which you revealed in September, received by buyers and consumers? What were some of your most popular styles? The response to my first collection has been very positive and encouraging. The public is truly embracing my vision for the brand! My first collection started hitting stores on January 28, and I’m thrilled with the response so far. One of the most popular handbag styles is the Nicola twistlock handbag, which is the first bag I designed for the brand. It comes with a distinctive enamel spade heart

twistlock hardware. We designed a range of iterations to appeal to a range of personal styles. The bubble dot high-neck dress has also been extremely popular. Both Priyanka Chopra and Olivia Wilde were seen wearing the dress during the Fall shows, and it turns out customers are loving it, too. How have you built upon that success in your Fall ’19 collection? We are focusing on the new house codes we introduced for Spring and Summer as we move into fall—always keeping the brand’s core DNA in mind, while staying true to our brand promise of optimistic femininity.

We continue to elevate our assortment and evolve core concepts with new takes on sophisticated design techniques. How are you evolving the brand’s prints? I’m continuing to develop a unique print language. Print and color are the defining signatures of an amazing collection. When you walk into a store, you should be able to spot a brand from across the floor by its print and color sensibility. I’ve been focusing on graphic prints where there’s a sense of discovery—what you see from far away isn’t the same as when you’re up close. How are you using the iconic spade in accessories? One of the most important focus areas for me when I started was to establish iconic elements across categories that are consistent season to season, starting with the spade. So many brands look for a symbol to define themselves, and Kate Spade has one of the strongest. I explored all types of spade treatments—both overt and bold and subtle and hidden, integrating it into patterns as well as functional closures. I wanted to use our heritage as a distinct and recognizable part of our product design across categories, including handbags, ready-to-wear, footwear, jewelry, even home. The spade has endless possibilities. What kinds of color combinations are you gravitating toward? For the Spring collection, I’ve taken a more refined and eclectic approach to color, and combined them in unexpected ways, like lilac punctuated with chartreuse. I’ve also mixed high and low hues, like dark green and pale pink. What are your key silhouettes for the Spring collection? Overall, the collection is more modern and less retro. It has a youthful spirit and a ’40s-meets-’70s silhouette. There is a sense of polished ease. The pieces are fashionrelevant, and many of the ready-to-wear pieces can easily transition from day to night, depending on how you accessorize them. How do you expect these to transition into Fall? We continue to build on the fluid silhouettes and unique use of fabrics introduced in the Spring and Summer seasons, translating these elements for Fall. Ready-towear is evolving through the use of new textures, prints, colors, and elevated takes on embellishment. Easy, sensual details are polished and put together. What have been some of your favorite moments on the job so far? My favorite moment as a designer was my first fashion show back in September at the New York Public Library. I loved seeing how my vision came to life and translated across all our categories, from ready-to-wear and jewelry to handbags and footwear. Now that my collection is in stores, it’s exciting to see the response from customers. They’re really embracing my vision for the brand. What are some of the best compliments you’ve received about the new Kate Spade? A few of my favorite comments include a press headline from the day my first collection hit stores that read, “The New Kate Spade Collection Is Here, and It Might Be the Brand’s Best One Yet.” A customer on Instagram commented, “I was skeptical, not wanting to accept change, however, I can say I stayed tuned and waited patiently and objectively and I’m obsessed. #truetokatespade #spadesfordays.” It’s been a rewarding experience!

Have you been on any inspiring trips lately that could potentially influence an upcoming collection? If so, please share! You’ll have to wait and see! I love to travel with my husband and my son. We like to visit exotic destinations where we can not only experience the culture, but also do some of our favorite activities, like surfing. Which Kate Spade bag are you carrying these days, and what is inside it? I actually carry two! I strongly believe in the idea of “two bags, one look,” which is how we styled the collection for our Spring and Fall shows. It feels very real to us because it’s how most women carry their bags, and provides an additional opportunity to style the new pieces in a personal way. I carry the Nicola bag and the Dorie together. The Nicola bag is the first handbag I designed

for the brand. It’s a softly structured shoulder bag with rounded corners, and its soft feminine details balance the strong, graphic silhouette. In my Nicola, I carry my essentials: my cell phone, wallet, Chanel Stylo Yeux waterproof eyeliner, and a picture of my son, Flynn. Dorie is a larger bag that features a traditional interlocking leather technique, reimagined as interlocking spades. In my Dorie, I often carry paperwork that I need to review, dark chocolate with sea salt for when I need something sweet, and snacks and small toys for my son. How do you plan to show the Fall collection? We’ll be continuing with the runway show format, and this season will be showing at Cipriani on Broadway. It was really important to me to do a show to properly reflect the shift to a modern silhouette. With a runway show, you infuse movement into the experience, which

allows the guests to see the change in silhouette—to see the fluidity in the ready-to-wear. We’ve seen a lot of Kate Spade on the red carpet. Tell us about some of the women wearing Kate Spade for these events, and why they are gravitating toward the brand. Any favorite looks would be great, too! The celebrity response has been really exciting and new for me. There is an ease to the product that women love. I love seeing how they style the pieces in their own way. I love how Priyanka Chopra styled the bubble dot highneck dress at our show last September. It looked easy and effortless, but chic. Angela Sarafyan looked gorgeous in the lilac satin midi dress and matching Rochelle boots at a dinner we hosted with InStyle in Los Angeles. These boots have been extremely popular this season! THREE’S COMPANY Fashion Hong Kong is returning to NYFW with a show at Industria on Friday, February 8. This year, the group is showing the work of three designers—Mountain Yam of 112 mountainyam, Yi Chan and Larry Cheung of Heaven Please+, and Annette Chan of Anveglosa. The Daily caught up with the talented group to chat about all things fashion. BY Aria Darcella

Mountain Yam

What first drew you to fashion? When I was in high school, I liked to draw clothes and make over authors’ photos in Chinese language books. I didn’t know my purpose or intention, but I enjoyed it. When I grew up, I learned that my uncle was a tailor and found cutting and sewing two-dimensional cloth into three-dimensional clothes was interesting work. Now, I love that my designs are not only transforming someone’s appearance and style, but also embracing their characters with confidence. Tell us a little more about your career. I have a master’s degree in fashion design from Institute of Textiles & Clothing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. I started my own company, MY Fashion International Limited, in 2015. Now I have two labels, a couture made-to-order line, MYam Atelier, and a ready-towear line, 112 mountainyam. What’s the concept behind your ready-to-wear brand? 112 mountainyam appreciates hardworking urban women and aims to create self-confidence for independent women with a stylish fashion collection. The brand uses Pantone color 112 to express a pursuit of vitality and the freedom and courage to explore the attitude of life. What advice would you give to fashion students about getting into the industry? Fashion is not just about being pretty; it is a business. Be prepared to work hard in this industry and stay creative! Are you on social media? Yes! Follow me on Instagram at @112mountainyam.

Yi Chan and Larry Cheung, Heaven Please+ Why did you decide to get into design? We started our own label because we couldn’t find any designs that felt unique to us. Also, we wanted to share our beliefs and stories through our collection to connect people with the same vision. What are your goals as designers? We are devoted to applying our experiences outside the fashion industry—including art, music, and literature—into our design concepts and sketches; attempting to empower fashion with insightful and perceptual values. By applying different design variations, cuttings, and the craftsmanship on each of our pieces, we bring individuality to simple clothing. What were you inspired by this season? The Armada Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, and the 1998 Air album Moon Safari. The collection blends the Golden Age and the Space Age, exploring timelessness and eternity. What are some tips for staying fresh in this industry? It is necessary to absorb new ideas for creation, whether from music, film, architecture, art…from any field possible. Most importantly, be modest and stay humble. The fashion industry is a dazzling world full of uncertainties. Opportunity could knock on your door at any time. But no matter how good you think you are, there is always someone out there who is better. You need a grateful heart to go further. What’s your Insta handle? @heavenplease.

Annette Chan

You’ve been working in fashion for 30 years—how did you start your career? I first started doing private labels. Then, a lot of people liked my designs, and I started thinking about developing my own brand instead of helping other brands to design. I wanted to have a wider audience. Working for other brands often limited my design ideas, so by having my own, I can design pieces that I enjoy. What does good style mean to you? I don’t think that there is a common definition of good or bad style. Style is just a reflection of your fashion attitude, experience, personality, and taste. As long as you can showcase these elements through your appearance, you create a good personal style. What are you presenting for Fall 2019? The collection is called “Salute to Fashion.” It is inspired by the “good old days” of fashion design, and is also a symbol of our respect toward the tradition and heritage of the fashion industry. It features three main colors: black and white, to represent nostalgic black and white photos, and a green shade that invigorates the collection. The aesthetic and silhouettes nod to the essence of fashion, from the 1920s through the present day. Where can we follow you? @anveglosai on Instagram. FA S H I O N W E E K D A I LY. C O M
