Alcorn Co. Relay for Life event raises almost $54,000 BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian. com

Organizers of the 2012 Relay for Life of Alcorn County say the program was a great success in raising awareness and funds to help fight the war against cancer. The final tally is not yet complete, but the 2012 Relay has to date raised almost $54,000 of its $59,000 goal. Organizers hope to reach the goal by the deadline of August 31, said Kristin Chittom, community representative of the American Cancer Society’s Mid-South Division. The main, all-night event for Relay for Life was held Friday at Crossroads Regional Park. “The weather was cold and kind of hurt us, but we had a great turnout and lots of support from our teams, and we appreciate them so much,” said Chittom. “Corinth did a great job of raising money, really outstanding.”

Twelve nuisance properties came before the Board of Aldermen for action on Tuesday. Public hearings occurred on three and the board scheduled hearings for another nine properties. Aldermen gave a continuance to June 19 for 2201 Proper St., where some cleanup has been completed. At 1103 Tate St.,

the board gave a continuance to July 3. A fallen tree has been removed, and the owner of the unoccupied house has a plan to bring the property up to code, said Code Enforcement Officer Kim Ratliff. The candidate qualifying period ended on Monday for the five county election commissioner positions. According to records filed with the chancery clerk’s office, which handles qualifying documents for election commissioner, all of the incumbents are seeking reelection, and all will

have opponents on the ballot. The candidates are: ■ 1st district — Tim Chapman (D) and incumbent Bobby McDaniel (R) ■ 2nd district — Ray Nash (D) and incumbent John Peebles (D) ■ 3rd district — Incumbent Billy Bearden (D), Everett Lee Davis (D) and Jimmy Harwood (R)

■ 4th district — Jim Blalock (R) and incumbent Keith Settlemires (D) ■ 5th district — Incumbent Wendell Dixon (D) and Joe Vann (R) There is no party primary election for the election commissioner posts, but their party affiliation is indicated on the ballot. Election commissioner is one

Rockabilly Highway Revival celebrates fourth year BY JEFF YORK For the Daily Corinthian

SELMER, Tenn. — The 4th annual Rockabilly Highway Revival will attract many people to Selmer on Saturday to celebrate rockabilly music, the grand opening of a visitor’s center and the dedication of a downtown wall mural. The day will close with the viewing of the classic movie “American Graffiti” in the McNairy County Visitor’s and Cultural Center. A dedication of the Rockabilly Highway Mural II will be at 9 a.m. at the Rockabilly Park at the Farmers Market. Brian Tull painted this mural as he did the first one in 2009. Officials from the McNairy Regional Alliance and Arts in McNairy will cut the ribbon at 9 a.m. for the county’s new visitor and cultural center. The visitors and downtown merchants will open to the public at 9:30 a.m. “The Rockabilly Revival is really good for our town,” said Selmer Mayor David Robinson. “This is good for our merchants because it brings in new customers. This is a great experience and positive thing for Selmer.” There will be hundreds of antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles in Selmer for

This 1941 Ford, owned by Etta Kennedy and the late Bob Kennedy and restored by David and Kirby Kennedy, will be one of the many cars on display at the 4th Annual Rockabilly Antique Car Show on Saturday in downtown Selmer. The car is parked in front of the new Rockabilly Mural that is being completed just in time for this weekend’s festival. The Antique Car Show has brought over 120 classic and hot rod vehicles to Selmer the past three years. The cut-off for entries is 1987. Anything that can qualify for an antique license plate is welcome to attend. There will be a $20 entry fee and all participants will receive a plaque with a picture of their vehicle in front of the new Rockabilly Mural. There will also be over 20 Gas Pump Trophies that will be presented to entries that are chosen by the sponsors of the trophies. Everyone is invited to come out and see the antique cars, tractor show, motorcycle show, visit the vendor booths and hear the great Rockabilly bands performing. a car show and motorcycle ride.
