Courts hear guilty pleas cident that resulted in death. Robert Shane Parker entered the plea before Judge Thomas J. Gardner III during the November term of Alcorn County

Circuit Court, according to court records. His sentencing will occur at a later date. On the morning of April 7, 2011, Parker was driving a Jeep Cherokee on County Road 180 when the vehicle struck John D. Calvery, 85, who was near the roadside picking up trash. Calvery was pronounced dead a short time later. The Jeep overturned and

came to a rest in a field off the road. Parker was also originally indicted for culpable negligence manslaughter. The indictment noted prior convictions for burglary and larceny of a dwelling in 1997, uttering a forged prescription in 2005 and conspiracy to sell

vin S. Brown in the upcoming March-April term of Alcorn County Circuit Court on a charge of sexual battery. Brown’s first trial came to an end quickly on Nov. 5 as the result of statements made by the first state witness, who made

reference to a second victim in violation of the court’s prior ruling, according to the order declaring a mistrial. Brown was released on his present bond. In December 2010, a grand jury returned two separate

indictments against Brown for alleged sexual battery that occurred between 2001 and 2005. He is being tried on one of those indictments and has previously entered a plea of

Record number seek Toy Store assistance BY BRANT SAPPINGTON bsappington@dailycorinthian.com

A record need is going to require a record response from the community to make Christmas wishes come true from children in need in Alcorn County. More than 600 families have registered for assistance this year from the Lighthouse Foundation’s annual Toy Store Christmas toy drive. Foundation Executive Director Gary Caveness said that number represents more than 2,000 children who will receive Christmas gifts through the annual effort this year. The number is a significant jump from last year and a record for the annual program. Last year the program operated on a budget of around $100,000 and it will take even more this year to pay for the effort. Please see TOYS | 2A

KCB planting trees along Main Street BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful is focusing its efforts on downtown Corinth. The group’s board of directors is currently undertaking a beautification project that will add some life — in the form of trees — to Main Street. “The seven islands down Main Street used to be beautifully adorned with gorgeous trees that over the years died or were removed for various reasons. A few of the older trees still remain,” explained Andrea Rose, community development director for the Alliance. During the remainder of this year and throughout the next, Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful will work with a local landscaping company to bring the trees back to Main Street. Gerald Sellers and his crew at Archer Landscape are working to install the trees in two phases. They began planting the first of the trees this week and will finish in the spring.
