Liquor vote petition tops 2,000 names BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Supporters of a liquor vote in Corinth are getting close to the target number of signatures. In the past week, the number of signatures gathered has risen to 2,100. The required number — 20 percent of city voters — is around 2,395. “We are steadily working at

it,” said supporter John Orman. “Basically we are encouraging people that have gotten petitions signed to turn them in at the drop off locations or mail them to us. We need to get a firm count.” They plan to submit the petitions to the city once the number reaches 2,400. Orman said supporters are

pleased with the results of the first five weeks of the effort. “We knew the first 1,500 would go quick,” he said. “We’re at the point now where they are coming a little slower.” Businesses where the petition can be signed or turned in include Pizza Grocery, Nickels Signs and Graphics, Lucy’s on Cruise, JT’s Falafel & Kababs,

Mi Toro, Lil Chicago, Cafe Mike’s, Dixie Coins, Southern Carports and R&T’s Corner Tobacco & Beverage. The website is corinthforavote.com. Under the new state law, the petition seeks a Corinth-only vote, excluding county voters. With the change in state law, citizens in cities of at least 5,000 population or in county

seats located in counties that have voted dry in the past may seek an election. In Iuka, resident Charles Aldridge has begun a petition for a city vote and has a little more than 200 signatures thus far. He said he needs 519 but has been told that number may decrease due to some cleaning up of the poll books.

Corinth School District trustees receently voted to revamped the Hall of Fame selection process in an effort to give students a more equal chance at the senior honor. Superintendent Lee Childress said the policy revision reflects input received during the last several years. The process recognizes academic achievement, extracurricular activities and school and community service while moving to a scoring rather than a ranking system. Also, eligible candidates for the eight Hall of Fame slots will complete an application detailing their activities. “In the past, there has just been a ranking of the students that are eligible in terms of GPA or the ACT requirements, and then that committee considers it at that point,” said Childress. It was possible that some committee members would not be familiar with the activities of all of the candidates. “As a result of that, what we want to make sure that we do is we want to give students an opportunity where they can then fill out a form in which they can outline this information, and it really will give everybody, in my opinion, a fairer shake,” the superintendent said. “If you know one kid and don’t know the other child, it’s really not a level playing field.” A minimum GPA of 3.0 and ACT score of 18 are required. In other recent business: ■ The board accepted a supplemental Physical Education Program Grant of $15,000 which will go toward establishing a vegetable garden at Corinth Elementary School. Vegetables grown in the garden will be used in the school cafeteria. Childress said the district will have a farmer’s market during the extended year summer camp activities in which people can make a donation or make purchases with the funds going to sustain the garden. ■ New district finance director Please see TRUSTEES | 2A

On this day in history 150 years ago Gen. Pemberton relieves Van Dorn as the commander of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The order to assume command came before the disastrous Battle of Corinth and is not a reaction to the recent defeat. Van Dorn maintains control of the army in Holly Springs.
