FEMA awards city grant for drainage BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded a $931,000 grant to Corinth for work on a major drainage pipe in the South Corinth area. Beginning near Ross Street, the arch pipe extends along a couple of blocks of Crater Street and then along the side of the J.B. Combs Apartments,

ending at Cass Street. It is an older structure that was severely damaged in the May 2010 flooding disaster. “I think it will be a great relief on the stress of potential flooding in our area,” said Alderman J.C. Hill, whose ward the pipe traverses. “It’s the project that we’ve been waiting on.” He recalled seeing sandbags in the driveway of one of the

residences affected by flooding at White and Crater Streets. The total project cost is $1.034 million. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency may contribute 5 percent, leaving the city with a match of 5 or 10 percent. The city has been concerned about deterioration of the pipe for some time and unsuccessfully sought Community Devel-

opment Block Grants for it in the past. The pipe is the main drainage structure for Town Creek, said Dave Huwe, director of community development and planning. Rather than a complete pipe replacement, failing areas will be fixed. “We will have a pipe that is some old and some new but all functional,” said Huwe.

72 scene of 3 wrecks within minutes BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Two Corinth residents were hospitalized Monday as a result of two of three separate traffic accidents that occurred within minutes of each other. The call for the first accident came in at 11:51 a.m. about a two vehicle collision at the intersection of South Parkway and Droke Road, said Corinth Police Chief David Lancaster. No one was injured. At 11:58 a.m. Corinth Police received the call about a one car crash on U.S. 72 near the Salem Road intersection. Rebecca Fooshee, 26, of County Road 400, Corinth, was the driver of a white 2000 Honda Accord that was traveling eastbound on Highway 72, crossed over into the westbound lane, left the road, glanced off a utility pole and smacked into an earthen embankment. Fooshee stated she was in pain and was transported to Magnolia Regional Health Center via ambulance. She was wearing her seatbelt. Officer James Butler headed the investigation on the second accident. The third accident call was

The pipe crosses streets such as Allen, Meigg, Scott, White and Mitchell. “Where it ends, it will be picked up with that runoff between McDonald’s and Belk’s and take it on into Elam Creek,” said Mayor Tommy Irwin. “This is a very good project for a lot of people.” With the grant in hand, the city can now move toward the bid process.

The Easom Outreach Foundation is seeking donations to help it rekindle a community around the dinner table. The Easom Community Center is now in the fourth week of its new Kitchen Connection hot meals program at the former South Corinth campus cafeteria. It’s off to a good start but could use some financial support from the community, said Sam Crayton, Easom Outreach board president. “At the rate we are going right now, we can’t continue this just through the donations in the treasury,” he said. “We can run it probably another six to eight months.” Easom is targeting senior citizens with the program, which Please see MEALS | 3

The Alcorn County Health Department is ready to put its needles to work.
