Household Hazardous Waste Day set BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

It’s time to rid closets and drawers of old cleaners, electronics and other potentially hazardous items for proper disposal next Saturday. Corinth and Alcorn County will have a Household Hazardous Waste Day for the first time in nine years on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 8 a.m. until noon at the Alcorn County Transfer Station located off of South Harper across from Physician’s Urgent Care. People will be able to drive through the site and have items unloaded from their

vehicles for recycling or proper disposal. “We know it’s a big weekend, and we hope people will load up their trunks and head through while they are out,” said Andrea Rose, Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful coordinator. “We don’t normally have access to all of these recycling options because we are a rural community. These are things that we don’t want ending up in our regular garbage because they are not healthy for the land and our people.” The site will be set up with convenience in mind.

“People don’t even have to get out of their cars,” said Rose. Paint is normally the item collected in largest quantity at such events. In addition to items such as household cleaners, old appliances, gasoline and motor oil, an electronics recycler will be on hand to accept old desktop computers and laptops, computer accessories, printers, monitors, telephones, cell phones, fax machines, scanners and video game consoles. Televisions, however, will not be accepted. Complete destruc-

Most will be chowing down on some pig during the 22nd Annual Hog Wild BBQ Festival. Some will even be coloring a couple of hogs. The Hog Wild Coloring Contest — presented by Main Street Corinth and Happee Days Carnival -- is giving children through age 12 a chance to win some prizes and have their work displayed throughout the festival. The annual festival in downtown Corinth begins Thursday and runs through Saturday. “Mia (Nickels) did a great job of putting this together,” said Susan Joiner with Main Street Corinth. Children will be coloring the 2012 event logo designed by Katie Briggs. The design pits a pair of swines in Civil War uniforms and utensils in hand ready to duel with the Historic Depot in the background. Over 800 festival T-shirts have the logo on the front and will be available at Hog Wild. The age divisions are bro-

It’s time to speak up and end the silence. Rita Millsaps is doing all she can to stress that to victims of domestic violence. The mother knows all too well the pain associated with the crime. Her daughter, Amanda Millsaps, was murdered by her estranged husband in January of 2010. “There are no words to describe when you lose a child,” said Rita Millsaps. Since the loss of her daughter, Millsaps has been on a campaign to bring more awareness to domestic violence. On Wednesday morning, she and Deborah Yates, Executive Director of S.A.F.E., Inc., were on hand as Corinth Mayor Tommy Irwin signed a proclamation declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Corinth. “We think this only happens in other places, but Rita tragically lost her daughter here,” said the mayor. “People who are Please see AWARE | 2

As Corinth’s municipal court clerk since 1980, Dianne Johnson has seen the court grow from a part-time operation in a small office of the police department. Coworkers and friends gathered Friday to wish her well as she retires from the job. “I’m seeing third generations come through court, so I guess it’s time to Staff photo by Jebb Johnston Among those congratulating Dianne Johnson at a reception on Friday were, (from left) go home,” said Johnson. “It has been Fred Johnson, her husband; Mayor Tommy Irwin; Municipal Judge John Ross; and City Prosecutor Tom Sweat.
