Missing feline Girl’s dream comes true returns to owner BY BRANT SAPPINGTON

The happiest place on earth was enough to leave 10-yearold Grace Holder searching for words. “She was absolutely speechless,” recalled Andrette Holder of her daughter’s reaction to arriving at Disney World for a dream vacation. The trip, provided by the Sunshine Foundation, was the first real family vacation Grace and her twin sister Georgia had experienced due to the demands of Grace’s illness. Diagnosed at 9 months old with cerebral palsy, the family has spent most of their vacation time in hospitals as Grace underwent tests and treatments.

It was the purrfect ending to a tale that came within a whisker of costing Simba the cat more than one of his nine lives. Jeff Stark was recently reunited with Simba 10 months after the furry wanderer disappeared from Stark’s home near Farmington. “I was very surprised,” said Stark. Simba’s adventure began shortly after Stark moved into a new home. Normally an indoor cat, they decided to let him out to play one afternoon. It would be the last time they

Public can comment on broadband service BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com
The public can comment on broadband Internet service in an upcoming community forum. Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley will meet with the public at the Alcorn County Courthouse on Thursday, Aug. 29, beginning at 6 p.m. to hear from ratepayers. The forum follows the similar “Zap the Gap” initiative that focused on cellular phone service. “I want to give people across my district the opportunity to share their concerns with me personally about the lack of broadband access in their area and how that affects their lives
and businesses,” Presley said. “I am committed to using every power granted to the commission to ensure greater access to this vital service.” Information from the broadband forums are compiled and reported to the Federal Communications Commission consistent with the framework created by Congress. The Mississippi Public Service Commission designates companies as eligible telecommunications carriers for participation in the FCC’s Universal Service Fund and is tasked with ensuring that ETCs use USF support consistent with federal statutes and the FCC’s implementing regulations. 4-H Day: ‘Learn by doing’ BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Youngsters got a chance to see what 4-H is all about on Saturday. Using the approach of “learn by doing,” children
took part in such club activities as shooting a pellet gun to planting a flower at the Alcorn County Extension Service. “We did something different this year,” said 4-H agent Tammy Parker. “Each club had some sort
of activity to help kids see what goes on in that particular club.” One of the popular events was the 4-H Shooting Sports station. “All of the kids wanted to Please see LEARN | 12A

IUKA — The 151st Battle of Iuka anniversary brings a chance to meet the generals and presidents who shaped the times. Two events will feature portrayals of prominent figures from the war, giving the public a chance to learn more about them while supporting the Old Tishomingo County Courthouse Museum. It is part of a Labor Day weekend that will be filled with reenactment and Heritage Festival events. On Saturday, Aug. 31, breakfast with Presidents Lincoln and Davis, Generals Grant and
Little, and Colonel John M. Stone will take place at Iuka United Methodist Church from 7 to 8:30 a.m. On the same day, Presidents Lincoln and Davis will conduct an educational seminar on the Battle of Iuka in the courtroom of the old courthouse from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. The talk will cover issues that affected Iuka during the war and will include an opportunity for people to ask questions. Both events have a limited number of tickets available for sale in support of the museum and can be purchased at the
museum or Tishomingo County Tourism Office. Museum Director Cindy Nelson encourages the public to spend some time at the museum during the busy weekend. The museum is extending its hours for that weekend to 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Heritage Festival kicks off the weekend with the annual community church service on Friday evening. General Henry Little (Fielding Tyler), Colonel John M. Stone (Phil Bozeman) and General U.S. Grant (E.C. Fields Jr.) appeared at last year’s 150th Battle of Iuka anniversary re-enactment. Presidents and generals will again be portrayed this year.
On this day in history 150 years ago Gunmaker Christopher Spencer and President Lincoln hold target practice near the Washington Monument with Spencer’s Repeating Rifle. Lincoln is duly impressed with the weapon that can fire seven rounds in 30 seconds, more than three times faster than the standard muzzle loader.
