Corinth School District enrollment rises JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The new school year brought a continued increase in enrollment for the Corinth School District. A week into the new year, district-wide enrollment stands at 2,630, up from 2,490 at the end of the first month in the last school year, an increase of 5.6

percent. The trend in recent years has been rising enrollment, particularly in lower grades. “It’s pretty much distributed over all three schools, which is what we expected to begin to see as these classes that have been in the elementary school begin to move up through the grades,” said Superintendent

school, then over that two- to three-week period, an additional 57,” said Childress. The district now employs nine kindergarten teachers and is watching the numbers to see if a 10th will be needed as some continue to enroll after the school year has begun. In other news from the district, the board of trustees met

Lee Childress. Corinth Elementary School is at 1,238; Corinth Middle School, 785; and Corinth High School, 607. Kindergarten had a late surge of enrollment, prompting the district to order more classroom materials. “We only had 180 registered up until about two weeks before

Tishomingo officials are lauding the expansion of a pair of major metal fabrication operations located near Yellow Creek Port. G & G Steel has announced a $5 million expansion expected to create 25 to 35 new jobs at its facility. Contract Fabricators Inc. (CFI) has announced a $3 million expansion of its waterfront facility in Iuka. G&G Steel’s project will double the size of its building at the site to allow it to manufacture some of the largest components used within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inland waterway system. The first project will include large tainter gates that will be shipped by water to a lock on the Ohio River. The expansion at G&G Steel is being funded in part through a Mississippi Development Authority grant of $277,500 awarded to Tishomingo County for modifications to the existing building. “G&G Steel is a stable employer and builds some of the largest steel components outside of a shipyard. We are proud to have G&G Steel in Tishomingo County,” said Tishomingo County Board of Supervisors

BY STEVE BEAVERS Charlie Daniels is making his first trip to the Crossroads Arena one to remember. The country music icon and the Arena will honor all military veterans and those actively serving with a free ticket to the concert on Aug. 24. “Charlie has entertained our military troops numerous times, both overseas and right here at home,” said Arena General Manager Tammy Genovese. “The tickets are just a small token of the appreciation for all they do.” Military personnel must show military identification or an equivalent proof of service to receive a ticket. All military tickets must be picked up in advance at the Arena Box Office. Country music artist and songwriter David Lee Murphy and Corinth’s own Maty Noyes will be opening for Daniels.

Aggies hosting showing of “Gridiron Gold” BY STEVE BEAVERS KOSSUTH — The Kossuth Aggies are taking a break from blocking and tackling to take in a movie. Kossuth, which opens the season Aug. 23 versus Corinth, is showing the film “Mississippi Gridiron Gold” at the team’s practice field tonight around 8 p.m. KHS Head Coach Brian Kelly viewed the documentary at a coaching clinic in the summer. Schools have been allowed to show the movie prior to it premiering at theaters later this year. “It’s a good movie about the history of high school football in the state,” said Kelly. “Other schools are showing the film throughout the state and we are encouraging people to bring

their lawn chairs and blankets, and come on out.” Kossuth plans to introduce members of the team along with cheerleaders, dancers and band members with a pep rally starting at 7 p.m. Papa Johns will be selling pizza with part of the proceeds going to the football team. The pizza place will also be providing the outdoor screen, projector, and speakers for the movie. Football parents will also have a concession stand with drinks, snacks, and popcorn available. “This will be a good way to kickoff the season,” added Kelly. Kossuth will entertain New Albany in jamboree action Friday night at 7 p.m. prior to officially getting the season under way next Friday night.

Cost to view the 80-minute documentary is $8 with $4 going to the Mississippi High Please see GRIDIRON | 2

“We want to invite all of our military to join us for the show,” said Genovese. “It is a privilege to be able to offer something special to the men and women of the military, and having Charlie Daniels want to do this easily shows how much he respects those people who serve,” added Lee Jones with co-promoter Mind Roxx Entertainment. During his 50-plus years in the music industry, Daniels has been widely known for his country and southern rock contributions. He is best known for the number one country hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” about the devil’s attempt to steal a young man’s soul through a fiddling contest that the devil ultimately loses. The song, featured in the 1980 movie “Urban Cowboy,” was the band’s biggest hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2008, the 76-year-old was honored as a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

President Nicky McRae. “We expect great things from G&G Steel and we are excited about the company’s latest contract to build the largest lock and dam components ever built anywhere in the world,” said State Representative Lester “Bubba” Carpenter. CFI’s new expanded building will feature an eave height of 100 feet and contain two specially designed 120-ton bridge cranes with 85 feet of clearance. The company manufactures pressure vessels, columns, cyclones, heat exchangers, evaporators, storage tanks, high pressure piping, refractory linings, separators, gasifiers, mega pumps, risers, towers and other fabrications for the petroleum refining, cement, chemical and other industries. CFI is one of the few companies in the world specializing in large and complex special alloy vessels. “We are delighted to have CFI in our community and we welcome this latest expansion,” said McRae. “We are fortunate to have such a fine company in Mississippi. CFI is one of the few companies in the world with the expertise to build specialty pressure vessels and other large components for heavy industry,” said Carpenter.

Another trip is set. All that is needed volunteers to help raise the money. A meeting to discuss plans to send special needs children in the area to Disney World is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Corinth Sportsplex. In 2012, over 60 combined special needs children, parents and volunteers made the trek to Orlando, Fla. “We have a new crop of kids this time,” said organizer Havis Hurley. “I look forward to seeing their smiling faces when they have that magical experience.” According to Hurley, who serves as a special needs bus driver in the city, organizers need a strong start on the fundraising end for the trip planned in late May. “We need a pretty good one to get off to a good start,” he said. Organizers were able to raise around $54,000 for the last trip. “Last year, we raised enough so each kid had $300 to spend when they got there,” said Hurley. Hurley would like to have two fundraisers per month along with three to four car washes. “It’s important to have people at the meeting so we can get everyone’s input on fundraising,” said the organizer. Donations from numerous individuals and businesses helped organizers reach the goal early last time.
