City set to redistricting ward lines BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

With an election coming up next year, Corinth officials are turning their attention to redistricting of ward boundaries. After delaying action a couple of times, the Board of Aldermen on Tuesday approved an agreement with the Northeast Mississippi Planning and Development District to redraw ward

lines based on Census 2010 results. City Clerk Vickie Roach said the process is expected to take 120 days, which should allow completion prior to the start of qualifying for the city’s quadrennial election. The board had two proposals on the table to complete the work, and aldermen had also raised the possibility of com-

pleting the work internally. NMPDD is currently working on redistricting for the Alcorn County supervisor districts. In other news from Tuesday’s meeting: ■ Roof repairs may come much sooner than originally anticipated for the ailing Verandah-Curlee House. Although it had been planned as a later phase of work after

the current improvements to the foundation and porch, it appears enough money will be in hand to proceed with roof repairs. The city has received clearance from the National Park Service to go ahead and re-roof the whole structure. Two options for the roof fix will be possible, both involving a PVC membrane. “We’ve got to get the roof

repaired before we do a lot of other things,” said Dave Huwe, director of community development and planning for the city. Bids may be presented to the Board of Aldermen later this month. Huwe notified the board of the clearance to proceed with the roof during Tuesday’s agenPlease see BOARD | 2A

When comes to looking for the right horse, a quartet of young ladies know what to do. The four have the state championship to back it up. Alcorn County 4-H members Sarah Mitchell, Marlee Turner, McKinley King and Alaynna Childers captured the Junior Horse Judging Team championship with a combined score of 771, besting nine other teams in the competition. “They all worked hard and were prepared,” said 4-H agent

Tammy Parker. Each of the four members finished among the top ten individual scorers. Mitchell was runner-up while Turner was fifth, King sixth and Childers ninth. “They were all within 12 points of one another,” added Parker. The team, which finished second to Lee County in the district competition, rode home with Alcorn County’s first crown in the event in close to 10 years. Four different classifications of horses were judged by the

nine junior teams in Jackson. Teams had to judge the animals on balance, muscle and structural correctness. “It was kind of like judging against yourself, because we couldn’t talk to one another and compare scores,” said Mitchell. “We had to be patient.” “My heart was pounding until I got through the first class,” added Childers. Their time in Jackson was all devoted to getting ready for the state event. Please see JUDGING | 3A

People being offered one sweet deal BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Alcorn County Extension Service has a honey of a deal for people interested in beekeeping. Mississippi State University Bee Specialist Jeff Harris will come to Corinth on Aug. 20 to conduct a beginning beekeeper workshop at the extension office behind Crossroads Arena. It is offered free of charge to in-

terested residents. “I’ve had a lot of folks call and ask about where to get bees and what to do to get started,” said County Director Patrick Poindexter. “I also get calls about bees that are swarming — what to do about it and who can catch them.” Interest is probably also being stimulated by the ongoing news in recent years of declines in bee populations.

“People have started realizing their importance,” said Poindexter. “It’s encouraging to know that people are taking an interest.” For the last two years, a Department of Agriculture program lured some into beekeeping by making funds available for people starting out with honeybees. It may be re-ap-

The 13th Annual Owen B. Whitehurst Memorial Tournament has changed names. It’s dedication to helping others remains the same. After 12 years of providing scholarships to Alcorn County high school graduates as the Owen B. Whitehurst Memorial Scholarship Tournament, the four-person golf scramble is changing things up this time around. “We are changing gears a little bit this year,” said tournament founder Mike Whitehurst. “Instead of awarding the proceeds for scholarships, contributions are going to an area charity we can alternate every year.” Whitehurst started the tournament to honor his father – Owen B. Whitehurst – with the first scrambles held at Hillandale Country Club before moving to Shiloh Ridge. The four-person scramble is open to everyone and is set for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Eighteen holes of golf,

with cart included, comes with a package of tourney comfort color T-shirt, tote bag, Subway lunch and awards ceremony. Deadline to enter is August 21 and cost is $60 per player. “We started the tournament with nothing and have been able to provide around 60 scholarships to high school seniors,” said the founder. “This year we thought we would branch out a little more and contribute to something that touches everyone.” Sponsorships are also available. Platinum sponsors are $500 and include a team entry into the tournament along with an advertising sign on a hole, name on the back of T-shirt and name on tote bag. Gold sponsors are $300 with sponsorship earning a team entry to the tourney and name on tote bag. Silver sponsors are $100 and include advertising on a hole. To enter or for more information about the memorial tournament contact Mike or Tracy Whitehurst 662-4155514, Winners Circle 662-2877678 or fax 662-287-7679.

Corinth Elks Lodge plans summer event for children BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth Elks Lodge has a treat for kids as the summer winds down. An array of games and fun awaits youngsters at the End of Summer Kids Day hosted by the lodge on Saturday. “We do something every year for kids and we thought we would make it better this year,” said house committee chairman of the lodge Rusty Stephenson. “I think we have something for everyone planned.” The event, set for noon to 4:30 p.m at the lodge on 1521 Robertson Drive, is open to both kids and special needs children. “All we require is that all children be accompanied by

an adult,” added Stephenson. Fun games such as an inflatable fun house, slides and basketball goal will be available along with face painting. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department will be on hand to share information about its DARE program. The Corinth Police Department is also scheduled to conduct free fingerprinting for children. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will also be available. “If we have a good turnout, we will look at continuing something like it again every year,” said Stephenson of the free event. The Elks Lodge plays host to a hoop shoot every year. The lodge also holds fundraisers for St. Jude and Le Bonheur.

On this day in history 150 years ago Brig. Gen. Stephen Dill Lee (no relation to Robert E. Lee) is formally exchanged and promoted to major general. He had been captured at Vicksburg and is now placed at the head of all the Confederate cavalry in Mississippi.
