Ordinances adopted for Forrest Hill Cemetery BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The city of Corinth has put new rules on the books for permits and practices at the cityowned Forrest Hill Cemetery. With plans to open a new section of the cemetery in the future, the city deemed it necessary to adopt an ordinance dealing with permits and other matters. It is also intended to address

a problem with payments not being made for some burial plots, according to Projects Coordinator Kim Ratliff, who has served as a liaison between the city and the cemetery’s advisory board. “We had to put some safeguards in place for the city, since the city is responsible for the cemetery, he said. “It is about the future of the cemetery, and if we are not collect-

ing fees, that is not aiding the future of the cemetery. The permit fee to open a grave at the cemetery off Bunch Street is increasing from $100 to $350. Ratliff said the price to purchase a plot is still low compared to that of other cemeteries, and cemetery income has not increased for a number of years. The ordinance allows a fine of up to $1,000 for each failure

of a funeral home to obtain a permit prior to opening a grave. Headstones are required, and a new dimension requirement is aimed primarily at the upcoming new section. Permits are issued at the city clerk’s office at City Hall. The cemetery is nearing capacity unless it expands. Some graves in the old portion possibly date to the time of the nearby contraband camp from

Rotary honors outstanding Corinth School District teachers BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Two Corinth teachers gained accolades Thursday for exceptional efforts in the classroom. Corinth Rotary honored Lee Ann Nuckolls as the elementary teacher of the year and Kelly Treadway as the secondary teacher of the year in the Corinth School District. Nuckolls is a second grade teacher whose time with the

district also includes prior work as an interventionist. She also spent a few years teaching firstgraders in Mansfield, Texas. “If you visit in Lee Ann’s classroom, you are going to see a teacher that is always full of energy, that is always engaging children in activities, and that is so important today for children to be engaged in these activities on a regular basis, said Superintendent Lee Childress.

Kelly Treadway, the district’s secondary school teacher of the year, joined the district in 1994 as a teacher assistant and soon became a special education teacher. “It takes a very special person to work with those students, and Kelly did an exceptional job, said Childress. In 2003, she went to Thrasher Attendance Center, teaching English I, II and IV simul-

taneously. Upon her return to Corinth schools, she became language arts teacher at Corinth Middle School, and then moved to Corinth High School as drama and speech teacher. “One of the responsibilities that goes with that position is producing a play and a musical each year, said childress. “A lot of time has to go into it beyond what takes place in the regular day.

She also assists with the Follies. The civic club gave each teacher a plaque and a monetary award. Rotary recognized Alcorn School District teachers in a prior meeting. The staffs of the schools choose one of their own to be honored each year. “We consider it an honor and also a mission to recognize students but also teachers, said Jason Marlar, club president.

Join Hands Day: Adults, youth plan community projects BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Members of the local Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial group bridged the generation gap on Join Hands Day. This year’s Join Hands Day was held on Saturday, May 4, and brought youths and adults together to plan and complete volunteer service projects in their communities. Here’s the concept: As different generations work side by side, they learn more about each other, sparking new levels of under-

standing and respect. Local Modern Woodmen members partnered with Keep Corinth Beautiful to put together birthday baskets for local ministries to distribute and cleaned up around the old West Corinth gym. Join Hands Day gave the Modern Woodmen a chance t work with other groups to improve the community, said project leader Jonathan Marsh. Please see HANDS | 2A
