Corinth schools consider initiatives BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth School District is considering several initiatives to keep pace with a new law and changing times. In Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Lee Childress told the board of trustees of plans for a

district-wide literacy initiative and an early learning collaborative. He also wants the district to consider the possibility of putting technology devices in the hands of students for use in coursework. The board passed a motion for planning to continue on the

technology initiative. Childress wants to form advisory councils to help formulate how it will work. Technology will be advantageous over printed materials for the upcoming full implementation of common core standards, he believes, and all

common core testing will be online within a few years. “Everything is changing and it’s changing extremely fast,” said Childress. “What we are doing in schools you can argue is not the culture of the world today. If we went into the traditional high school classroom to-

day, they’re not much different than what we all experienced.” He said it would not be about simply giving each student a tablet or laptop computer but rather finding how the device can improve student achievePlease see INITIATIVES | 2A

GLEN — Heather Mayo will not be forgotten. Her former colleagues are seeing to that. The popular Alcorn Central Elementary School teacher, who lost her battle with melanoma cancer on December 17, 2011, is being remembered by ACES teachers with the forming of the team “Heather’s Heroes”

for the May 31 Relay for Life. “We would like to raise funds to support cancer research in hopes that no one else has to lose a loved one,” said principal Tammy Johnson. The school is selling T-shirts for $12 as part of its fundraising efforts. A Bear’s paw and Melanoma Awareness are printed on the front of the purple shirt. A crown with “Heather’s Heroes”

above is on the back. “Every size is available from children’s to XXXL,” said Johnson. Those wanting to purchase a shirt can do so by going by the school office. Deadline to order one is May 10. “All profit will go to Relay for Life,” added Johnson. Please see HEROES | 2A

Owners discuss business networking group BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

Business owners are ready to team up. Close to 10 local business owners took the first step in wanting to grow their business by attending an informative meeting with Business Network International (BNI) representative Jana Cardona Tuesday morning at The Alliance. BNI, the largest business networking organization in the world, offers members the opportunity to build its business through personal referrals. “The numbers are staggering on what they are doing,” said Modern Woodmen Financial representative Steven Eaton. “The group is about coming to together as business owners and referring one another.”

Eaton said a Corinth chapter of BNI is set to launch in a few weeks. Cardona, Executive Director of BNI MidSouth, went over what the company does to help business owners during the hour meeting. “My responsibility is to help business owners run their business,” said the executive director. “There are a lot of opportunities when you become a member of BNI.” Tupelo has a chapter of 40 businesses. “You have a golden opportunity here,” said Wayne Averett, a member of the Tupelo chapter. “Forming a chapter is a long process, but I think it will pay off.” BNI uses a structured and professional “word-of-mouth”

program to help individuals develop meaningful relationships with quality business professionals. The company allows only one person per professional classification or specialty to join the chapter. “We are a business team that is involved in 51 countries around the world,” Cardona told the group. “In BNI you are connected to each of those chapters.” Last year alone, BNI passed along 7.1 million referrals which generated $3.3 billion worth of business for its members. Members total 145,000 worldwide. “BNI provides those deeper relationships to build your business,” added Cardona.
