Corinth man faces kidnapping charge BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

Corinth police say a woman was briefly kidnapped after confronting a man who stole something from her vehicle in a store parking lot. Joseph Doug Tapp, 32, of County Road 416, Corinth, was charged with kidnapping

and a misdemeanor charge of petty larceny. Bond was set at $10,000. Detective Capt. Ralph Dance said it happened on Saturday in the area of the Dollar Tree store at 2113 South Harper Road, where witnesses reported they had seen Tapp looking into the windows of vehicles in the

parking lot. The woman apparently confronted the man after he took some tools out of the back of her pickup. “He pushed her into his vehicle and got in and drove off with her,” said Dance. “He drove around to the back of the Walmart store. She was trying

to get out, and he pushed her out of the vehicle.” The driver also tossed the tools out of the vehicle and got out and unhooked a trailer from the rear, leaving it there. Officers Ben Moore and Tim Lancaster apprehended a suspect a short time later. The victim was not injured

and the stolen tools were returned. Dance said Tapp was out on bond for a prior felony charge of burglary of a vehicle. Although she was abducted for a only a short period of time, Dance said it is considered kidnapping because the woman was held against her will.

County supervisors are close to making a move to the old Alcorn County Jail. It appears renovations will be complete in time for the board to hold its first meeting in the building on March 18, with the moving process for furnishings and the financial staff beginning during the prior week, according to Supervisor Dal Nelms, who is overseeing the construction work. An open house for the facility will be scheduled. That means the board’s final meeting in the Alcorn Chancery Building will likely be this coming Monday. Supervisors have met upstairs in the Chancery Building since July 1990 following renovation of the former bank building. Exterior painting and finishing of the old jail on Fulton Drive is mostly complete. Landscaping is planned and the parking lot will be resealed. Floors have been stripped to the concrete, which is awaiting its finish. The floors will remain finished concrete so that cleanup will be easier if water ever enters the building during flooding. Classic ’72 musical comes to life BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

The Corinth High School production of “Grease” takes the stage on Thursday. A cast of 82 students will bring the classic 1972 musical to life beginning at 7 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium.

Directing such a large group of high school actors presents a range of special challenges, said theater instructor Kelly Treadway. “It takes a lot of planning and knowing the kids. You have to be able to know the kids and the craft. It takes a lot to keep their

interest in this Xbox age,” said Treadway. “I’ve been planning parts and organizing parts since November, and we’ve casted some people into roles they created for themselves.” “Grease” was the first production of CHS theater students at the new school 20 years ago.

Local Girl Scouts set up booths for cookie sales BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com

Local Girl Scouts cookie booth sales are off to a good start this year. “In Alcorn County it’s going really well this year,” said Membership Manager Rhonda Tennyson. Total sales for last year were 22,690 boxes. This year, with three weeks to go, 22,291 boxes have already been sold. Locally the most popular cookies are Samoas, Tennyson said. Nationally, cookie buyers prefer Thin Mints.

Booth sales began last weekend and will continue for three more weeks. Local Girl Scouts Cookie Booths are located at Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Gardner’s Supermarket, Roger’s Supermarket, Kroger, Raceway, The Slugburger Cafe and Belk. The Girls Scouts also offer the option of purchases going to the Troop to Troop program, in which cookies can be bought and sent to members of the armed forces serving overseas.
