Office fields calls about latest scam BY JEBB JOHNSTON jjohnston@dailycorinthian.com

A new phone and texting scam reported locally preys on the fear of being arrested. Circuit Clerk Joe Caldwell said his office is getting calls about the scam in which the

person receives a text message or phone call stating that a warrant has been issued for the person’s arrest. “It’s nothing but a scam,” said Caldwell. Deputy Clerk Crystal Starling said the office has had at least

15 phone calls in the last 10 days from people who have received the text message or phone call. “Most of them are wanting to know what the warrant is for,” she said. Some of the messages indicate the warrant is for “failure

to appear,” and some indicate that it is for failure to report for jury duty. Caldwell said it is an attempt to scare people into giving out personal information. A number of circuit clerks’ offices across the state have re-

ported the scam. It is one of a number of cons that officials have been tracking in recent weeks. Officials continue to receive reports of phishing calls targeting bank Please see SCAMS | 2A
