New book tells key Civil War battle story BY BOBBY J. SMITH bjsmith@dailycorinthian.com
A new book in a series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War tells the story of the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads. Author Stewart L. Bennett’s “The Battle of Brice’s Crossroads” details the tale of the battle fought just west of Baldwyn on June 10, 1864. “Using a wealth of firstperson soldier accounts, Dr. Bennett’s account of Brice’s Crossroads is highly engaging and readable,” said Katie Parry, publicist for the History Press. “The book is part of the History Press Civil War Sesquicentennial Series which offers thoroughly researched, accessible accounts of the war rarely covered outside the academic realm.” The new book tells the story of the battle at an insignificant crossroads in northeast Mississippi that became the setting for one of the most spectacular Confederate victories in the western theater of the Civil War. It is the story of two generals — the North’s Samuel D. Strurgis and the South’s Nathan Bedford Forrest — and how their decisions determined the destinies of their men. “The Battle of Brice’s Crossroads is a story of courage,” wrote Stewart. “It is a story about winning against long odds, a story of the stinging torment of defeat and about

For a brighter and cleaner future, the students of today must understand waste issues and how waste can be managed. Garbage will always be a part of life, so it’s crucial to know how to deal with it. That is the premise of Waste in Place, a new educational resource from Keep America Beautiful that is designed to help teachers and their students develop a balanced perspective of waste and the options for its management. “We are very excited to get this completely new material out into our teachers’ hands and have this training so close
to our community,” said Andrea Rose, community development director for the Alliance. Waste in Place is a newly redesigned resource and activity guide for educators from preK to 6th grade. Designed to be fun and interactive, the workshop will be held Thursday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northeast at Corinth WIN Job Center. During the workshop, the state director for Keep America Beautiful will be on hand to train area educators to use the new activities and resources.
