Key intersection gets upgrade Major improvements are coming to a key intersection on U.S. Highway 72. The Corinth Board of Aldermen recently approved the purchase of a final piece of property near the intersection of South Parkway and Highway 72, paving the way for the city to soon begin seeking bids on the $325,000 upgrade project. Aldermen purchased the land along South Parkway beside the former Golden Rule restaurant for approximately

$43,000. The land is needed to accommodate widening of the South Parkway. The project will include milling and resurfacing a portion of the intersection, new mast arm poles and signals and the addition of a protected left turn for southbound traffic on South Parkway to turn east onto Highway 72. Matthew Estes with Cook Coggin Engineers said the paperwork on the project will now be finalized and the bid process can begin once the

Mississippi Department of Transportation gives final approval. The project is mostly funded by federal dollars awarded through the Mississippi Department of Transportation with the city contributing a match. The project was originally conceived with the removal of Liddon Lake Road from the intersection, but that part of the project was scrapped after residents of the road objected.

Person of the Week

John Anderson New Alcorn Central Elementary School principal John Anderson is the Crossroads Weekly Person of the Week. A lifelong Golden Bear, the 1995 Alcorn Central graduate has served as assistant principal at the school since January 2013 and is looking forward to the start of his new challenge. “I’m looking forward to working with all the wonderful teachers here and seeing these kids grow and learn,” he said. “It’s a tremendous amount of responsibility, but I have the peace of knowing I have a great staff here. They go above and beyond in everything they do.” Anderson, who received his masters in educational leadership in 2008 from the University of North Alabama, has spent more than 13 years at Alcorn Central Middle School where he’s served as a science and social studies teacher and a junior high basketball coach. He takes the reins at the elementary school from former principal Tammy Johnson who has moved to the district office as elementary curriculum/testing coordinator where she will oversee testing for students in the district. “I had the privilege of working with Mrs. Johnson for more than a year and I thought she would stay a few more years, until she

was offered the job at the district office,” Anderson said. “She let me work side-by-side with her and I learned quite a bit. Since working with the staff at ACES, I had hoped that one day I would be able to lead this school.” Anderson said family is important to both him and his students and parental involvement is key to student success. He has two children with his wife, Ashley, who is a sixth grade teacher at ACMS. Their son, Aidan is 7 and will be entering the second grade at ACES this year. Their newest bouncing baby girl, Avery Ward, is 23 months old. “Parents being involved is essential at Alcorn Central Elementary,” said the proud father. “We hosted a parents appreciation night event last year and it was a success. It provided the teachers and administrators a chance to say thanks to the parents.” Anderson got his interest in education from his grandfather, the late James D. Anderson, who was a teacher at Alcorn Career Technical Center for many years. “My grandfather was one of my greatest influences,” said the new principal. “He truly valued education and loved helping others.” “I hope I can continue to instill the same values in everything I do,” he said.
