Corinth is the perfect place for a train collector to live. Just ask Don Essary. The U.S. Air Force veteran has been collecting model trains in the Crossroads area since 1972. “I used to collect all model trains, but I’ve recently settled on just cabooses,” said Essary as he looked over his vast collection of the rarely seen railcar used at the end of a freight train. “Cabooses don’t exist anymore. We never see one actually being used these days, so I like to collect them mostly because they are obsolete.” Essary’s collection includes more than 260 model cabooses – mostly 1:87:1 HO scale – displayed on the walls of a spare bedroom inside the West Corinth home he shares with his wife, Charlotte. Essary’s cabooses range from the familiar Santa Fe and

Bringing luck into 2017, American Legion Post 6 is starting the New Year off right by observing a time-honored custom. The post will serve a traditional southern “Hoppin’ John” luncheon from 11 a.m. until the food runs out on New Year’s Day. “We had a huge response last year,” said Post Commander Tommy Watson. “We had planned for about 50 people and sold out completely within an hour and a half.” The event was so popular that organizers have decided to do the meal again this year, but on a larger scale. “We are getting bigger pots and more stuff,” said Watson with a laugh. “One of our guys has also decided that he wants to set up and do some side items like turnip greens.” Consisting of fried hog jowl, black-eyed peas, boiled cabbage and cornbread, plates for the 2nd Annual New Year’s Day Luncheon will be available for
Having caught the acting bug at an early age, Corinth native Riley Floyd has been in theater for 95 percent of his life. The 19-year-old has performed both at Tishomingo County High School, where he graduated in 2016, and at the Crossroads Playhouse. Audiences will remember him from his most recent roles as Roger in “Grease,” an extra in “Footloose” and Sketch in “Hairspray.” “I thank God for everything He’s done for me,” said Floyd. “He has really blessed me this past year.” A freshman at Northeast Mississippi Community College, Riley is the son of Mike and Rhonda Floyd of Corinth and the brother of Bellah Rose, 8. He serves as the manager for the NEMCC Tigers basketball team and on the college’s TV crew, where he tries to broadcast each sport as much as possible.

A glass of tea is included in the price. Side items and desserts will be available for $1 each. The food will be prepared by Post and Auxiliary members like Bobby McDaniel and Carlean Parker. “I will probably be doing some of the preparing as well,” said Watson. “My wife will likely be making some dessert such as her famous banana pudding.” After having to turn people away last year, Watson hopes to Please see LEGION | 5
