A dormant Cruise Street building is set to get renovations for upstairs apartments and possibly ground-level retail space. The new owner of the property at 509 Cruise Street, Chris Tays, gained a certificate of appropriateness from the Corinth Historic Preservation Commission on Thursday for the proposed modifications to the building. It has been vacant for years, and much of the bottom portion is covered with boards. Tays said he definitely plans for the renovation to include two apartments upstairs. He is still considering plans for the downstairs space. The city is pleased to see someone invest in the property, which has developed some safety issues. In 2013, the commission had pursued demolition by neglect action against a former owner. Tays “is tearing down and replacing the existing deteriorated brick around the windows and redoing the brick trim around the windows,” said Building Inspector Greg Tyson. The storefront, with black

Basket Fund tops $11,000 The 21st Annual Corinth Rotary Club/Daily Corinthian Christmas Basket Fund has topped the $11,000 mark. A $23,000 fund raising goal was set so 1,000 food baskets could be given to local families on Saturday, Dec. 17. The baskets were given away on faith the goal will be reached. The newspaper has received $11,445 in donations so far. Donations include a $200 anonymous gift in memory of Ray Howard and Gerald Smith; $50 from Bill and Jeannie Wegmann in memory of Hortense and J.C. Swain, Ruby Wegmann Lancaster and Grady Wegman; $100 from Gunn Drug Company in memory of Pauline Meeks; $200 from Allan and Kathryn Lee in memory of Holly Lee and Beverly Hussey; $100 from Hansford and Lora Ann Huff in memory of Lanehart and Bea Huff and Jessie and Ruby Hopkins; $100 from Sara E. Conniff in memory of Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Conniff and Mr. and Mrs. James B. Harbert; $100 from Noel Gann in memory of Mary Gann and Johnny Gann. Christmas Basket Fund donations can be made “in honor of” or “in memory of” a special person or persons. The tribute will be published in the Daily Corinthian. A City of Corinth brush truck was involved in a twovehicle wreck that sent one person to the hospital. The wreck happened Thursday morning around
10:15 a.m. on Proper Street at the edge of the city limits. According to Corinth Police Capt. Landon Tucker, the brush truck was stopped on the side of the two-lane road near the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter.

Two years ago, 67-year-old Danny Boatman started a new career. The long time co-owner of The Phone Booth joined the team at Corinth’s newest financial institution, FMBank. “I got offered the job because I had a lot of contacts in the area through my business,” he said. “They wanted to try to build up the commercial loans ... it’s been pretty amazing here, learning a lot about a new industry has been fun.” Married to Jackie for 16 years, he has two grown children, Amy Davis and Cathleen Boatman. A member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Boatman loves to duck hunt. “Lack of rain has really hurt hunting locally,” he said. “I have been to Arkansas recently and had a lot of luck.”
