Dressed in maroon and white, the young members of Kossuth High School’s state championship baseball team gave hundreds of busy shoppers some holiday cheer on Saturday. Members of the team could be seen ringing the Salvation Army golden bell and wishing folks a Merry Christmas outside Wal-Mart’s front entrance in Corinth. The 21-member team took turns in 30-minute shifts,
while Coach Trave Hopkins watched from the sidelines. “We do a lot of baseball and working out, but this gives us a chance to get out in the community and raise money for something other than baseball,” said Hopkins. “We want to help the community that helps us. We wouldn’t be able to do a lot of things we do if it wasn’t for the support we get from the community.” Hopkins said he helped start the tradition one year ago.
“This is our second year doing this the Saturday before Christmas,” he said. “I hope to be able to keep doing it with the team every year.” The second consecutive Class 3A State Baseball Champions understand the importance of helping the community. “It makes us feel better about ourselves -- we’re doing something that will help a lot of people in the community,” said

Fallen soldiers were honored Saturday at the Corinth National Cemetery. American Legion Post 6 paid tribute to veterans who have lost their lives with the annual Wreaths Across America project. “Every year I am more in awe at the heartfelt response,” said American Legion Ladies Auxiliary President and Wreath Coordinator Carlean Parker. “There is no measure of anything which can be done to compensate the debt owed to our soldiers.” The ceremony to lay wreaths included the Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of American Legion and Legion Riders. “We had a good turnout with 367 wreaths placed,” said Park-
er. “We were blessed with good weather and eager people to help.” The wreaths were a traditional live green with a red bow. Cost was $15 per wreath with each sponsorship tax deductible. “Saturday was an opportunity to place a small token of thanks on the grave of a soldier,” said Parker. “By placing a wreath you are not just buying one, you are showing respect and honor, and most of all showing we will never forget the sacrifices made by the person lying in the grave.” Parker is asking individuals to pray for veterans and their families during the holidays. “Remember those families who will have empty chairs Please see WREATHS | 2
